SABOTAGE ON THE JC WATERFRONT Apple Tree House Lecture Series presents Ron Semple, Nov. 8 Author Discusses History of Black Tom Explosion of 1916

erman Agents, sabotage and skullduggery are key elements in the historic Black Tom Explosion of 1916, an event that took 50 lives, wounded 21 others, and paved the way for America’s entry into World War I. As part of Jersey City’s Apple Tree House lecture series, the Office of Cultural Affairs and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities welcomes guest speaker Ron Semple, author of Black Tom: Terror on the Hudson.

On Thurs, Nov. 8, from 7-9 pm, Semple will discuss the events leading up to the Black Tom explosion; how the event triggered America’s entry into World War I, and the incident’s affect on Jersey City and the U.S. The lecture is free and open to the public, although pre-registration is required.

Many Hudson residents may not be familiar with the history of the Black Tom Explosion that took place in 1916 on Black Tom Island located on Jersey City’s waterfront.

The lecture begins promptly at 7, and light refreshments will be served.

Semple’s book chronicles how German agents destroyed the munitions depot on Black Tom Island that supplied America’s allies in World War I. Semple will discuss the many events of the the Black Tom Explosion, those that led up to the attack, and its aftermath.

This free lecture will be held at the historic Apple Tree House and early registration due to limited seating and capacity is necessary.

Caridad Kennedy’s New Show of Paintings at Majestic Condominiums, JC Opening Reception Wed, Nov. 7, 6-8 pm; Show Runs through Feb. 17, 2018 SILVERMAN and the Majestic Theatre Condominium Association presents The Unleashing of Nature Remembered Works on Paper and Canvas, paintings by Caridad Kennedy.

The show opens at the Majestic Condominiums on Wed, Nov. 7, from 6-8 pm, and runs through Feb. 17, 2019. Kristin J. DeAngelis curates.

The Unleashing of Nature Remembered is a collection of works that Kennedy completed over the past several years. She describes the paintings as abstract landscapes - imaginative places where her environment becomes a metaphor for sentiment and experience. In referencing the natural world in her imaginary landscapes, Kennedy considers the “interplay with the psyche in an effort to reflect humanity”.

In 2011, after painting exclusively on canvas, wood and linen, Kennedy began

Kennedy is Cuban American and a Hudson County native currently living and working in New Jersey. During her Fine Arts studies at Rutgers, Kennedy studied the Modern Masters’ works. No Peeking Theatre’s WE HAVE STANDARDS by Allie Kroeper, debuts Nov 8-18 Theater Company Blindfolds Audience; Focuses on Other Senses

heater artist Amanda Levie believes audiences should see theater on an evenplaying field. So, several years ago, Levie founded the No Peeking Theatre company in Jersey City, where audiences “watch” the show wearing blindfolds.

“They experience the play through taste, sound, touch and smell,” Levie says.

No Peeking’s latest venture into theater for the blindfolded debuts Thurs, Nov. 8, with the absurdist comedy, We Have Standards by Allie Kroeper, to be performed at the Kennedy Dancers studios on Beacon Street in the Jersey City Heights.

The show runs through Sun, Nov. 18, and tickets are $20 online; $25 at the door.

Levie, the company’s Artistic Director describes We Have Standards as an absurd satirical comedy. Allie Kroeper’s play tells the story of a woman who introduces her fiance to her parents, but there’s one caveat: her parents don’t like the name Steve, and the woman’s fiance’s name is Steve.

The cast features Liliane Wolf, Bryan Murray, Dale Davidson, and Myles Wright.

“Allie does an amazing job at not only

No Peeking Theatre began in 2014 after a two-year development at Art House Productions in Jersey City. Since No Peeking’s debut, the company has performed at several venues; Kennedy Dancers’ studio will house the company’s 9th production.

Since the audience will be blindfolded, they will experience the show in a more sensory and visceral way by using their other senses, Levie says.

This immersive show will have two touch exhibits and a Q & A after some shows.

“No Peeking came from an idea I developed at Kean University,” Levie says.

“I wanted to create a form of theater that was accessible to everyone.

If you are disabled, have low-vision or are blind, the way you experience theater is not like everybody else. Theater is not the same for someone who cannot see. Take away one of the senses, and we are experiencing theater evenly.”

Experiencing theater wearing a blindfold can be somewhat disorienting, but that’s okay.

“That’s totally fine,” Levie says. “The audience is safe. They’re not going to be assaulted.

This is supposed to be a disorienting experience, but you’re not the only person blindfolded. It’s the entire room.”

Because No Peeking Theatre incorporates a “soundscape” and a “smellscape” some audience members may not like certain sounds or smells during the course of the play. Generally, though, people are immersed in the story, Levie says.

Another highlight of No Peeking Theatre is that

casting is based more on skills than looks, which gives the director leeway casting the show.

“This created a lot of opportunities,” Levie says. “For instance, casting people based on their acting abilities and their skill-set is more important than whether they look the part.”

PUBLIC DARKROOM OBSCURA DARKROOM TO OPEN IN NEWARK River View Staff Writer A public darkroom, Obscura Darkroom, will open in Newark, NJ in January 2019. Located in the University Heights neighborhood, Obscura will provide open darkroom hours, memberships for unlimited facilities usage, and classes for both adults and teens. In addition to being a darkroom, Obscura will also offer a photographic arts gallery to showcase work by facility and community members.

A resident of Union, NJ, the owner Jen Zehner has been involved in film photography since 1989.

In August 2018, she left her 18 year career with IKEA to pursue her lifelong dream of bringing photography to the public.

“Accessibility is key.”

Zehner says. “There are no other public darkrooms in New Jersey, so Obscura will be a valuable addition to the New Jersey arts community.” She continues, “I wanted to open in a community which is being revitalized, and which is accessible public transportation.

opportunities to reach out to younger people with interest in analog photography. Zehner explains, “I feel it’s imperative to connect with younger people, to expose them to photography. It provides another avenue for them to visually communicate their unique point of view, while ensuring that the medium stays sustainable and alive in the future.” Classes for home schoolers and youth groups are of particular interest for Zehner, who states “Kids are always amazed by the magic of photography. It’s so easy to get started, there just needs to be a location in which to actually process and print their work. Obscura will be that place!”

Starting up a darkroom can be an expensive endeavor, says Zehner.
