Int’l Muralist KOBRA paints 18-story David Bowie in JC Art Transforms Cast Iron Lofts Hi-Rise into Urban Landmark

ou can see it from Rt. 139 feeding into the Holland Tunnel or catch it from downtown Jersey City as you head into Hoboken. David Bowie’s image 18-stories high on the side of the Cast Iron Lofts in Jersey City, painted by international muralist Eduardo Kobra. Bowie passedaway January 10th of this year, but his music and artistry live on throughout the world; and Kobra’s mural is now part of the Jersey City landscape, an urban landmark and the latest addition to the Jersey City Mural Arts Program.

On Fri, Nov. 4, Mayor Steven M. Fulop, members of the City Council, local real estate developers, and local artists welcomed Kobra to Jersey City and thanked him for painting the dazzling, eye-catching image of David Bowie.

Mayor Fulop held the press conference on the building’s 5th floor deck where visitors could get an upclose look at the mural, and meet and take pictures with Kobra who spent the past few weeks painting from a scaffold hanging 180-feet off the side of the Cast Iron Lofts hi-rise on Jersey Avenue.

Jersey City, turning Jersey City into a public art gallery. According to Mayor Fulop, public art is a shared experience.

“I’m a believer in public art,” Mayor Fulop told the crowd. “If you look at every period of time, public art is a reflection of what’s happening during that time.

It’s symbolic of the times we live in. I’m proud of what we’re doing. Jersey City is a thriving art community, and a welcoming community.”

Real estate developer Paul Silverman of SILVERMAN Properties in Jersey City, attended the event.

Silverman, who owns several properties in Jersey City, said having artists paint murals on buildings enhances the aesthetics of A Full Service Bo Jersey City’s architecture Compa and brightensPiano up the vibes in the neighborhood.

“I think it’s awesome,” local muralist 4Sakn of Jersey City said. “The scale and the colors. The geometric shapes mixed with realism.”

4Sakn sees the mural of David Bowie as a tribute to Bowie’s influence on the music industry. He said, “It’s a memorial to Bowie and all the music he created.”

Kobra’s fame as a mural artist is as international as his mural projects. He just earned entry into the

cities throughout the world including London, Athens, Lyon, Los Angeles and New York.

Kobra, who is Brazilian and spoke through an interpreter, was asked why he chose an image of David Bowie to paint on the Cast Iron Lofts.

an icon and I wanted to represent his life to all of his fans,” Kobra told the assembled guests. He mentioned how thrilled he was to be in Jersey City and how an early visit to New York City when he was a boy helped shape his love of art.

“When I was 12, I was inspired by New York artists,” Kobra said. “That’s what made me who I am today. I have enjoyed working on this project. It’s been a privilege and honor to be here.”

Artists John Ruddy and John Falcon are the curators of the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour’s gallery on the first floor of the Cast Iron Lofts building. Ruddy said Kobra’s mural of David Bowie stretches the limits of identity and

creativity.

“An icon like David Bowie is a local hero in the spiritual sense,” Ruddy said.

“It’s timely,” Falcon said, “and to have someone on the level of Kobra is great.

He’s painted one of the biggest murals in the world.”

Falcon said the Murals Project has established Jersey City as an art city.

Anne Novado, who is soon opening the Novado Gallery on Morgan Street in Jersey City, compared the mural to one of the ancient wonders of the world.

“Its great energy,” Novado said. “It’s a wonderful interpretation of David Bowie. By the scale of the piece, I would compare it to the Pyramids of Egypt.”

By Sally Deering In the wake of the recent presidential election, the local art scene seems to be taking a political stance, especially at ShuaSpace art gallery in Jersey City, which will be hosting an art auction to raise money for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU. The money raised will be designated for cases the ACLU takes on based on discrimination.

BAYONNE ANNOUNCES COMBAT WOUNDED VETERAN PARKING INITIATIVE Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis today announced the City of Bayonne’s “Combat Wounded Veteran Parking Initiative.” This initiative is being implemented in coordination with the Wounded Warrior’s Family Support’s sign distribution program (Wounded Warrior Family Support is NOT affiliated with the Wounded Warrior Project).

“We’ve been in contact with Wounded Warriors Family Support over the past several weeks and look forward to the implementation of the program in key

public areas throughout the City. This is just a small way of giving back to those who have already given all of us so much,” said Mayor Davis.

Earlier this week the City of Bayonne received ten (10) signs which designate parking spaces for United States combat wounded veterans. Mayor Davis and city officials will now consult with local veterans groups on the placement of the signs.

LA ISLA RESTAURANT UPTOWN Cuban Dishes, Hispanic Wines and Mouth-Watering Mojitos Open, Sexy Atmosphere with plenty of Cuban Hospitality

La Isla Restaurant on Washington Street up the block from City Hall has been a Hoboken staple, serving Cuban cuisine in a tiny space where you have to step outside to change your mind. Riding on the success of its downtown location, La Isla Uptown located on 12th Street and Maxwell Place takes Cuban cuisine to a whole new level in an atmosphere that’s open, aery and filled with Cuban hospitality.

At La Isla Uptown, its more of a fine-dining experience compared to the luncheonette feeling of La Isla downtown, says wine director and general manager Andres Montoya.

The uptown restaurant is huge and open with seating for one-hundred in the dining room, at the bar, and in the front of the restaurant that features a counter and stools for those who want to dine and dash. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls, marble floor tiles, and the ceiling fans in dark brown wood make a visitor feel as if they stepped inside a Havana bistro. Along with the beautiful décor, La Isla Uptown has a liquor license which means great wine, beer and Mojitos, Montoya says.

“We only carry Hispanic wines from Cuba, Spain, Chile, Uruguay,”

Montoya says, “and our most popular Mojito is our Pineapple-Habanera Pepper Mojito. Its got a kick to it.”

Montoya, who is a Level-4 Sommelier, says La Isla’s success has a lot to do with great service as well as great food.

“There’s a certain magical feel about delivering an exceptional dining experience,” Montoya says. “Seeing someone taste our food with a glass of wine and seeing that they like those flavors, is very important to us. We want to give our customers the romantic flavors of Cuba.”

La Isla Uptown’s menu features appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. Here’s a sampling: appetizers include Empanada de Pollo o Carne, pastry turnover filled with chicken or ground beef; Croqueta de Jamon, ground smoked ham and onion, breaded and fried; Ceviche de Camarones, fire-roasted tomato, citrus, cilantro, and

Buttermilk Pancakes; La Isla Huevos Rancheros, two poached eggs, spicy tomato sauce in a fried tortilla shell served over black beans with a side of rice; Churrasco a Caballo con Arroz y Frijoles Negros, grilled skirt steak topped with red onion served with fried eggs, rice and black beans; and El Balsero, two poached eggs over shredded flank steak, rice and black beans. ($8$15) La Isla Restaurant Uptown has been open a year now; and business is incredible, Montoya says.

The restaurant is open seven days a week with breakfast served every day except Monday. And on Sunday, brunch is served.

“At Happy Hour, you can have a Cuban Sandwich and a Mojito for less than $15,” Montoya says.

Chef Omar Giner And, of course, a restaurant is only as good as the food it serves and owner and Chef Omar Giner and his talent are the real reason for the restaurant’s success. Formerly a pastry chef, Chef Omar’s desserts are out of this world, like the Flan de Leche Tradicional, Cuban crème caramel; Tres Leches, vanilla sponge cake soaked in three milks and rum, topped with meringue; Arroz con Leche, rice pudding; Pionono, sponge cake filled with dulce de leche and chocolate glaze; Torta de Limon Frisado con Almivar de Cilantro, frozen key lime pie with cilantro/lime syrup and toasted almonds; Torta de Queso y Mango, coconut mango cheesecake with mango sauce; and Empanada Guayaba, guava and cream cheese turnover. ($5.50-$7) “Most of the recipes are Chef Omar’s family

recipes,” Montoya says.

“Mama’s recipes, old school, Cuban-style recipes. Chef Omar is as Cuban as it comes.”

Chef Omar’s culinary talents were challenged recently in an episode of Throwdown! with Bobby Flay, where Chef Flay challenged Chef Omar to a French toast cook-off.

Chef Omar won the challenge. Chef Omar was also featured on Diners, DriveIns and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri, where Chef Omar prepared Croqueta de Jamon, ground smoked ham and onion, breaded and fried.

Montoya says Chef Omar’s passion for cooking the dishes of his country are the true essence of La Isla’s cuisine.

“When you own a restaurant, you have to be passionate about food,” Montoya*Pork says. “It’s all about the Chops Bitsy experience you want (Potatoes, Onions, Sweetpeople or Hot Peppers) to feel.”

Donna Reed’s Daughter Will Host a Screening of “It’s A Wonderful Life” At Loew’s Jersey- As Part Of The Classic Holiday Show -- On Stage &Screen Back in the glory days of the Movie Palace, many of the big, downtown theatres presented Christmas pageants that combined a live stage show with a film.
