By Sally Deering Professor Hugo Bastida, Curator of NJCUs 2019 MFA students new exhibition COSTALITY at Cast Iron Lofts in Jersey City, titled the show in reference to the costs artists have to pay in order to realize their artistic dreams.

COSTALITY opens Sat, Mar. 9 and runs through Sun, Mar. 24, with an Opening Reception on Mar. 9 from 4-6 pm.

COSTALITY highlights the talents of MFA students Asem Ahmed, Michael Barreto, Rita Jimenez, Rachel Kehoe, Laura Klinck, Kirk Maynard, Dawn Post, Alejandro Rubin, Andy Pecoraro, and Maria Tapia. The artists will participate in two Artist Talks on Thurs, Mar. 21, from 5:30-7:30 pm; and Fri, Mar. 22, 2:30-4:30 pm.

Each artist creates in a different medium.

Michael Barreto deconstructs and reconstructs human communication through everyday materials like cardboard and the repetition of common statements.

Rita Jimenez transforms spaces through manipulation of light, video, and live projections to blur the boundary between what is real and what is perceived.

udson hotels like The Hyatt Jersey City near Exchange Place are likely more accustomed to wedding receptions and corporate galas than art fairs.

All that changes on the weekend of March 15, 16, & 17 when The Hyatt Jersey City’s 8th and 9th floors switch gears to house Art Fair 14C, an art happening to feature more than 50 galleries and exhibitors from around the world, and a Juried Show where 39 artists’ works will compete for awards.

Art Fair 14C gets its name from a tongue-incheek reference to that old “what exit?” joke about living in New Jersey. The 3-day exhibition is an initiative of the Jersey City Arts Council, a 501 © 3 nonprofit dedicated to support and advocate for the arts. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to Arts Council programs.

Billed as New Jersey’s only art fair created with the mission of strengthening the visual arts in New Jersey, Art Fair 14C will showcase the works of undiscovered artists and small-andmedium-sized art galleries. by Norman Kirby Kirby’s solo show will feature 15 pieces of his wire work, figurative sculptures that he framed in shadow boxes; and, eight colored-ink drawings.

“These are my pen-andink drawings,” Kirby says.

“They are different scenes – cafes, a bar. I use an archival ink on multi-media drawing paper.”

For In Like A Line, Kirby says he went to figure drawing sessions, and traced his drawings with wire. Kirby’s drawings also wind up on fences.

Jersey City residents might recognize Kirby’s “fence art” -- strips of material he weaves through fence slats to depict animals, objects, and sometimes, a clever scenario.
