Gianluca Bianchino’s Mixed Media Works at NJCU Artist’s “Unchartered Spaces” On View at Visual Arts Gallery

By Sally Deering Umbrella frames, tripods, video projections and colored lights are all part of Gianluca Bianchino’s new solo show at New Jersey City University’s (NJCU) Visual Arts Gallery on Culver Avenue. Bianchino is an alumni of NJCU’S BFA program.

UNCHARTERED SPACES, which runs through Mar. 27, is an immersive exhibition of light and sculpture.

Bianchino invites visitors to interact with the works “to contemplate their positions in the universe as well as to explore traditional and new media processes employed in the art, such as, metal casting, laser cutting, optics, and hand-craftsmanship.”

“These installations are a result of my interest in space – in pictorial space and astronomy space,” Bianchino says, “There’s a dialogue there with a greater question. This is a combination of work I’ve been making in my studio the past two years, and two large-scale sitespecific installations that were conceived for the space.”

H

oboken playwright and Theatre Arts Professor Joseph Gallo knows first-hand the trials and tribulations of putting on plays. He does it as resident playwright for Hoboken’s Mile Square Theater, and as Theatre Arts Coordinator for Hudson County Community College’s (HCCC) Theatre Arts program, where Gallo teaches acting, playwriting and film courses to hundreds of students who have passed through its doors. Gallo has directed all the student productions in HCCCs academic classrooms -until now.

On Fri, Jan. 25, HCCC debuted its newest addition to the college: a beautiful and intimate, 40-seat ‘black box’ theater like those found Off Broadway and on other college campuses. The newlytransformed space, which used to be a classroom with Formica tables and white plastic chairs, now has 28 new theater lights, a raised ceiling with a grid for the lights, a state-of-theart lighting and sound booth that’s mobile, a prop closet, a tech closet, a film screen/ SMART Board, newlypainted black walls, black curtains and gray chairs that can seat 40 theater-goers at every performance.

“This theater takes the Theatre Arts Program and elevates it to another level,” Gallo says.

Hudson County Community College to Host Jersey City Writers’ Writing Bootcamp Free sessions will cover writing tips, publishing, fantasy, sci-fi, poetry, and more.

A Writing Bootcamp will be presented by Jersey City Writers and hosted by the Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Department of Cultural Affairs. Jersey City Writers in-residency presentations at HCCC will focus on both prose and poetry. Participants will have the opportunity to read their work at the HCCC Department of Cultural Affairs Rooftop Reading Series in April.
