Artist Diane Carbone to Exhibit Flower Paintings at Majestic Condos Opening Reception Fri, Mar. 1, 6-to-8 pm

By Sally Deering Flowers are a celebration of spring, beauty, and rebirth, but artist Diane Carbone of Jersey City thinks flowers are overlooked in today’s culture, so she decided to celebrate nature’s fragrant and beautiful treasures by painting them.

On Friday, March 1, from 6-8 pm, Carbone will have an Opening Reception for her new show, BLOOM: Images of Spring in the Majestic Condominium’s lobby in Downtown Jersey City. Her show will feature 21 oil-andwatercolor paintings that are close-up images of Lilies, Anemones, Tulips and other floral delights.

“I wanted to blow them up so that they go from the ordinary to the extraordinary,” Carbone says of the flower paintings she created. “I’m a big fan of Georgia O’Keeffe.

She’s an inspiration for the depiction of the flowers; my focus was on the form and color of the image.”

Although snow is still in the local weather forecast, Carbone says she hopes people will warm up to her flower paintings. Her show will make life a little sunnier for Hudson residents as they deal with the cold temperatures, she says.

“You need a little bit of that positive energy that flowers seem to give you,” Carbone says. “I hope they get the warm feelings of the celebration of spring, of the beauty of the flowers, and get immersed in the colors of the work.”

At Art House Production’s theater space, the company will present The Passion Project/ BrandoCapote a new mainstage production by creators Reid and Sara Farrington. Using one performer and multiple projections, The Passion Project is a 30-minute “vibration” between performance, film, and installation. That piece is followed by BrandoCapote based on Truman Capote’s 1957 profile of actor Marlon Brando.

New JCTC Series Explores Privilege in Today’s Culture Visual Arts, Play Readings, Spoken Word and Dance; Shows Begin Mar 1

Privilege and its

effect on today’s culture is at the heart of the new series at Jersey City Theater Center that will feature an art exhibition, play readings, Spoken Word and dance performances. The show is part of JCTCs mission to take on cultural issues that affect the Hudson community, and explore those issues through art and community interaction.

PRIVILEGE opens Fri, Mar. 1, with an art show and artist talk at JCTC’s Merseles Studios on Newark Ave in Downtown Jersey City.

“JCTCs series are about asking questions of ourselves and society through art and there is probably no theme more pertinent to today than privilege,” Olga Levina, Artistic Director of JCTC says. “By exploring what privilege means, we are looking at all sides of the question of privilege.

The artists are not only holding up a mirror to society, but they are encouraging viewers to question their own privilege.”

Lucy Rovetto, Visual Arts Coordinator for JCTC and curator of Privilege assembled the exhibition which features a multi-faceted assortment of artwork and ideas by artists who are both established in Jersey City and new to the local art scene.
