MAN OF STEEL & BRUSHES JC Artist Steve Singer to exhibit at JCTC’s BORDERLESS Art Show A View of the Artist who Creates Watercolors and Sculptures around & about Hudson

S

teve Singer’s watercolor paintings are soft impressions of Jersey City’s architecture and streets, like watery snapshots of urban landscapes and passing moments.

Singer’s work will be part of the new show BORDERLESS, a month-long series of art, plays and dance that address the effects of Globalization, presented by Jersey City Theater Center and Gallery. BORDERLESS opens Fri, Feb 3, from 6-10, with an evening of performances along with the gallery exhibition curated by Lucy Rovetto.

by Steve Singer As a painter, Singer sets up his easel and paints in neighborhoods throughout Jersey City He’s painted the tearing down of St. Joseph’s School of the Blind near Journal Square; a yellow house with a telephone pole sprouting wires on Tuers Street; and, a Cherry Blossom tree blooming on an urban street in The Heights. His painting “Late Bloomers” depicts what seems to be a homeless man catching some shuteye on a bench framed by Van Vorst Park foliage.

by Steve Singer “I had to work quick,” Singer says. “I did about 15 minutes, then the man woke up and looked at me.

He came over to my painting, made some sounds and walked off. You don’t necessarily get a long time to do the figure when you’re out there. You only get an Page 2-February 1-February 15, 2017 River View Observer

hour to an hour-and-15 minutes of light; then it changes. I go straight in with the brush; the sketch becomes the painting.”

If you walk along downtown Jersey City, you might encounter one of Singer’s metal sculptures.

His piece, “Longshoreman” stands at 2nd & Hudson Street in Jersey City -- an image of metal and curves like a 1950s robot. It has humor and poignancy, especially since back in the 1950s and decades before that, the downtown waterfront was where longshoremen worked the piers.

“Metal sculpture was the heart of my career from the 1970s to about 2001; the fall of the Towers (World

These days, Singer works mostly in watercolors, and this will be the first time he will be exhibiting at JCTC’s art gallery. His work “Late Bloomers” fits the BORDERLESS theme, he says, because in this age of technology, a lot of people are left behind.

“Globalization has been really great for the kids who have technical abilities,” Singer says, “but there are a lot of species of human. People who are privileged enough to afford technology have an edge over those who don’t. A lot of people are being left behind in several ways. The

homeless person is an extreme version of when you let yourself fall behind, and there are so many homeless people. It’s been a topic for me since the late 80s.”

Singer’s watercolors and metal sculptures seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum. He says his visual depth of field changed after undergoing an eye operation. Before, Singer had limited peripheral vision, which saw him looking at the world through a narrow slit. After the surgery, his world opened up, he says, and now he sees and experiences things he never did before.

It’s a completely new vision. I’ve had to create new art based on a new vision, a new way of seeing the world. It’s pretty daunting to have this vision open up.

JCTC presents GLOBALIZATION, Art/Theater/Dance Festival More than 30 artists present works on global topics Feb 3rd-Mar 25th

W

ith all the craziness going on in Washington these days, it feels like we are trapped inside an episode of “The Twilight Zone”. As life gets more and more ‘complicated’ one way to try to figure things out is through the arts.

The Jersey City Theater Center on Newark Ave seems to be one-step ahead with their new festival BORDERLESS, a series of art, theater and dance addressing global issues that opens Fri, Feb. 3 and runs through Sat, Mar.24.

Like its previous themedshows, JUSTICE, HAPPINESS, ORIGINS, IDENTITY and VANITY – JCTC’s BORDERLESS brings together visual and performing artists examining topics that are socially, culturally and morally relevant “Twenty five years ago we were tearing down walls, filling the people everywhere with hope,” JCTC Artistic Director Olga Levina says.

“What has happened in our world today is that so many virtual and real walls are being built to divide us.”

One Vision” by Ray Sanchez, on view at BORDERLESS BORDERLESS opens Fri, Feb. 3 with an art show featuring works by Luis Alves, Jerome China, Stuart BruceNoble, Paul Di Zefalo, Eileen Ferara, Dustin Grammanta, Jang Soon Im, Frank Ippolito,

Qori Moorehead, Hirah Park, Copie Rodriguez, Gregg Rosen, Rod Sanchez, Steve Singer, Nerissa Tutiven, Anthony Wills, Jr, and Muhammad Zaman. Curator Lucy Rovetto says the show has impact because artists are deeply affected by globalization issues.

“Many believe in an optimistic future with a continued breakdown of racial, political and sexual boundaries,” Rovetto says, “but walls seem to be coming down just as fast as they seem to be going up Artists realize that art must have no borders.”

On Thurs, Feb. 9, BORDERLESS’ series of plays begins with a staged reading of FOURTH PLANET by Dano Madden about the future of humanity and what scientific advancement and sacrifice looks like from a personal perspective.

ficking industry that exploits poor women and children in Mumbai. In 2016, HONOUR earned the Overall Excellence Award for Best Solo Show at the New York City Fringe Festival.

“It’s a completely fictional piece,” Mehta says. “I’m partnering with a non-profit that works with sex trafficking victims -- including children -- in the brothels.

The theme of JCTC’s festival is globalization. If we are talking about being a community world-wide we cannot overlook these marginalized people who have been shut out. It’s important to include them in the conversation. A lot of them want to be part of society.”

pacious for a neighborhood deli, Salumeria Ercolano (Deli) on West Side Ave in the Marion Section

of Jersey City is a great place for authentic Italian cuisine on the go. You’re also welcome to dine–in; the deli seats about 70 and offers a relaxed, casual atmosphere to enjoy some very tasty Italian sandwiches and main dishes. The deli’s warm and friendly vibe comes from owners Nat and Nancy Rescigno who turned an old coat factory into a deli & eatery people where people can relax with a good meal.

“We get a big lunch crowd,” Nat says. “City workers, police, firemen, business people in the area.”

“We also have summer seating outside,” Nancy adds.

Along with a great sandwich menu, Salumeria Ercolano offers hearty main dishes sure to satisfy those who love real Italian food.

Non-Italian dishes are also popular, Chef Matteo says, like BBQ Pork Ribs and a Pulled Pork Sandwich with Apple Cider Slaw.

The deli is a popular neighborhood go-to place and Nat & Nancy have gotten to know their customers on a first-name basis.

“I’ve been in this neighborhood almost 20 years,” Nat says “When you’re here that long, you get to know everybody and they know you.”

Nat and Nancy like to think of their staff and their customers as family, Nancy says.

“That’s very important,” Nat says “We want our place to be where people can come, sit and eat for a reasonable price.”
