Artist Kayt Hester creates Masking Tape Art at L.I.T.M. Two-Person Show with C. P. Harrik features Solo and Collaborative Works that Pop

Some of us use mask-

ing tape to fix a leaky hose; hang pics on the fridge, label the kids’ underwear for summer cap. There are a million uses for the sticky stuff and artist Kayt Hester of Jersey City chooses to shape the rolls of plastic into beautiful and intriguing art.

L.I.T.M. on Newark Avenue in Jersey City has welcomed back Hester for her 6th annual August show. This year, Hester invited artist C. P. Harrik

to join her on the gallery/ restaurant’s walls.

For this show, Hester created eight solo works; as did Harrik, and the two collaborated on eight works that meld Hester’s black tape images with Harrik’s

explosions of color, giving viewers a visual experience that’s light and fanciful with a somewhat darker undertone. An interesting and beautiful collaboration

of styles and mediums – the show runs through Aug. 31.

“We barely knew each other,” Hester says, sitting at L.I.T.M. sipping a green libation in a martini glass.

Last year, Hester and Harrik collaborated with artist Thomas John Carlson for the “Numbers Game” exhibition at 313 Gallery in Jersey City.

“After that, Kayt invited

me to join her show in August,” Harrik says. “It was an awesome opportunity.”

Harrik exhibits annually at the Jersey City Artists’ Studio Tour, and his ongoing show at Dame’s Coffee on Jersey Ave is always changing, he says. He’s shown at Merseles Studios, which is part of the Jersey City Theater Center, and he just had a show at Sage in Brooklyn.

“It’s been my most active year,” Harrik says.

commissioned Hester to do a fourth piece for their company’s New York headquarters “They had me do a piece on the first-ever Swiss Army knife,” Hester says.

“They needed it in three weeks. It broke me. I had my hands in buckets of ice, but I’m grateful for the work and they are great people, so I would put my

hands in buckets of ice for them any day.’

Hester hails from Jersey City’s Heights section where she lived until she was 4 and her family moved to Flemington, New Jersey. Her father was a newspaper reporter for New Jersey Home News and the Newark Star-Ledger, earning a Pulitzer for a breaking news story he did

on former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey. Kayt Hester attended Jersey City State College and in 1992, transferred to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and subsequently landed a job photographing clothes for the J. Crew catalogue.

Feeling unfulfilled taking pictures of socks and shoes, Hester left J. Crew and began creating pictures on canvas with masking tape left over from her film-developing days as a photographer. In 2005, Jelynne Morse, owner of L.I.T.M. saw Hester’s art and gave her a solo show.

“That show launched my career,” Hester says.

On the Opening Night of Hester and Harrik’s show at L I.T.M. all of their work sold except three pieces.

All About Downtown 2016, Jersey City’s Last Summer Fling 300 Vendors, Food Trucks & Bands to Rock Newark Ave

et out your flipflops and hottie shades.

Before summer ends, Jersey City promises one big block party guaranteed to blow your mind. It’s the ALL ABOUT DOWNTOWN festival that takes over Newark Avenue and transforms it into an openair market where the food is delish, the crafts artistic, and the live music makes passers-by want to dance in the streets.

All About Downtown 2016 happens Sat, Sept. 17 from 11 am to 6 pm and this year, the festival is expected to attract 30,000 people to Downtown Jersey City. So, yes, parking may be a challenge, but 300 vendors are participating along with lots of local bands, and so much more.

The kids will have their own entertainment, too, on Jersey Avenue where they can jump in a Bouncy House, get their faces painted like Spiderman, climb aboard a real JC fire truck, and barrel down a big plastic slide.

For the adults, there’s plenty of action, too, according to Rachel Sieg, Executive Director of the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District which facilitates the huge undertaking. The purpose of the All About Downtown festival, Sieg says, is to

promote Jersey City’s wealth of restaurants, shops, artisans, and bands.

“This is what we do,” Sieg says. “We try to bring as many people to Jersey City as possible, to shop.

Instead of going to New York, instead of going to Brooklyn, come to Jersey City.”

This year, there will be more than 10 foot trucks serving curbside goodies including Chopping Block/Jerk-n-Grind, Jimmy Dawn’s Food Truck, Milk Sugar and Love, ModcupCoffee Truck, Taco Truck, The Angry Crab, and Luigi’s Ice Cream.

Local bands will perform live on stages set up at the Grove PATH Plaza, Erie

Street and Coles Street. On Newark Ave, South House will set up a beer garden, and vendors will be selling artisanal foods, jewelry and T-shirts.

“Some of our favorite Jersey City vendors will be attending like Caviar Noir Jewelry, Lucky Honey Bee Candles, Republic of Pigtails, Moonchild jewelry, and Uh-oh Company,” Sieg says. “We are excited for some of our new in-districts businesses to join us for the first time this year like the Pet Shop JC on Newark Ave which serves a vegetarian menu and Van Hook Cheese, which will be opening its gourmet shop this month. Callahan’s Hot Dogs will also have a tent and so will Post Mates Delivery – a service that runs errands for you.”

The HDSID is a publicprivate partnership through which property owners and business owners have a direct impact on Historic

Downtown Jersey City neighborhoods and their development. HDSID liaisons with local businesses, property owners and neighborhood associations and the City of Jersey City to make Historic Downtown Jersey City a better place to live, work and visit.

“There are some great Jersey City businesses that have helped sponsor the fair like Storage Blue and Yu Fix It,” Sieg says.

“Without these types of businesses the fair would not be possible. So, come out to All About Downtown and support our local businesses. We’re really excited about this year’s festival, and we want everyone to enjoy the day and have fun.”

The Nerds to Perform in Summer Sounds Concert in Bayonne on August 24 Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne will present a Summer Sounds by the Bay concert featuring The Nerds on Wednesday, August 24, at 7:00 p.m., weather permitting. This musical event will be held at the amphitheater on the lower level of DiDomenico-16th Street Park, which is located between Avenue A and Newark Bay. It’s pure over-the-top entertainment when The Nerds come to Bayonne, bringing the sand and boardwalk atmosphere of the Jersey Shore to Newark Bay. Playing the hits of classic rock and roll, The Nerds deliver an exciting, edgy, and totally fun show. Break your glasses, fix them with a band aid, and come out to enjoy New Jersey’s zaniest bunch of cover rock stars – The Nerds!

“WEEGEE’S BOWERY looks back to the Bowery in the 1940s and ‘50s through a selection of images by Arthur Fellig, the legendary New York press photographer — better known as Weegee.

The 39 prints on view have been chosen by ICP Weegee specialist Christopher George from ICP’s holdings of more than 20,000 Weegee photographs. “Weegee’s photographs show the Bowery when it was still New York’s Skid Row. A gathering point for derelicts and down-and-out transients who huddled in the shadow of the Third Avenue

elevated railway, it was notorious for its fleabag hotels, flop houses that offered 25-cent-per-night beds, and crowded all-night missions that provided food and shelter to those who could afford neither. The exhibition includes a selection of Weegee’s photographs of a raucous nightclub and cabaret called Sammy’s on the Bowery, located at 267 Bowery. From its opening in 1934, until it closed its doors in 1970, Sammy’s provided a setting where adventurous uptown sophisticates could mingle with the bar’s flamboyant entertainers and harddrinking regulars.”

sst! I want to let you in on one of Bayonne’s best-kept secrets. Take Broadway all the way down until you reach 38th Street and then look on the Northeast corner. You’ll see what looks like a small bar with a sign above the door that reads El Aguila Dorada, which is Spanish for The Golden Eagle. Now, it may look like any neighborhood bar, but once inside the red-walled bistro, take a seat at one of the tables and order something from the menu. Here’s where you’ll be pleasantly surprised because El Aguila Dorado serves authentic Mexican fare that’s out-of-this-world delicious.

A family-owned business, El Aguila Dorada opened 10 years ago with Israel and Irma Romero cooking and running the corner eatery. Two years ago, they obtained a liquor license and added a bar with beer

garlic topped with Bacon Honey Glazed Calamari; Camarones Salteados en Salsa picante (spicy Buffalo Shrimp); Chorizo Espanol al Ajillo (Spanish sausage sautéed with garlic); and Chori-Queso (diced tomato, onions, jalapenos melted in Monterrey Jack cheese with a dash of tequila topped with fried chorizo. Painted a bright red, the restaurant’s walls are adorned with paintings of a Native American rescuing a fair princess; and a bald eagle. Both works are by Bayonne artist and muralist Nestor Uraga. Although the paintings are bold and beautiful, they don’t upstage the food.

The huge bowl of Seafood Soup came filled to the brim with scallops, crab, mussels, clams and fish in a light fish broth.

The Shrimp Quesadilla’s were light and fluffy and the Cheddar cheese didn’t overpower the shrimp. (By the way, the quesadilla was the size of a dinner plate with a shrimp in every bite.) One of the best dishes we had was the Honey Mustard Calamari, fried calamari (not breaded) cooked crunchy and delicious. The balsamic

vinaigrette sauce added just the right tang with a hint of cilantro to give it that authentic Mexican flavor.

This dish is a knock-out.
