By Sally Deering Artist Lucy Malolepszy pretty much knows Jersey City from her years growing up in The Heights. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in Design, Boston, Malolepszy came back to Jersey City where she paints Jersey City’s neighborhoods in the American-realism style of her favorite painter Edward Hopper.

Fifteen Malolepszy paintings are now on view in her debut solo show Hidden in Plain Sight at Galleria Hudson on Newark Ave. in downtown Jersey City. The show opened Fri, Mar. 2, and runs through Fri, May 11, with a closing reception at the gallery from 6-9 pm. Hidden in Plain Sight is curated

by Gallerie Hudson’s Henry Greenfield, a former Middle School classmate of Malolepszy.

Since the show opened at Gallerie Hudson, Malolepszy has sold four paintings and there’s interest in several others. Her paintings are beautiful renderings of city life, people sitting outside LITM restaurant; a couple at the Square 1 Eatery in Journal Square.

Malolepszy wasn’t sure what to expect when Greenfield offered her a solo show, she says.

“It’s really hard to make it as an artist when you’re working a 9-to-5,” Malolepszy says. “I was painting, painting, painting and nobody was seeing my work. I wasn’t a big advocate for myself.

I didn’t know how to market myself. When I reconnected with Henry it clicked.”

Malolepszy’s paintings are in the American Realism style with blocks of bright colors and images that are real but not with a lot of detail. Many of the

paintings convey a certain mood, an intimacy between the figures and the architecture, some of the figures are in silhouette. Working in Plein Air, Malolepszy works in real time, but that’s only part of her style.

“Not all my pieces are made in Plein Air,” Malolepszy says. “I rely on reference photos, too. I whip out my iPhone and get some really great images. It’s a mix of those and a mix of my sketches I do on the spot. For the LITM piece, it was a summer day. The sun was about to set and there was this warm lighting, golden tones on these red bricked buildings.

I gave myself a time limit. The more time you give yourself to paint, it could look overworked. I wanted to get people leaving the path train, eating outside. I wanted to capture the freshness.”

piece Untitled, which shows the outdoor café of LITM on Newark Ave in Jersey City and the contrasts of light and shadows are what make the piece really great, Greenfield says.

Greenfield reunited with Malolepszy during the 2017 Jersey City Studio tour when Gallerie Hudson was exhibiting the work of Ricardo Roig and Malolepszy stopped by to see the show.

“As soon as Lucy introduced herself, I recognized her immediately from Middle School,” Greenfield says. “We hadn’t seen each other since 8th grade graduation. Like me, Lucy grew up in the Heights, but we never saw each other after graduation.”

When they got reacquainted, Malolepszy mentioned to Greenfield that she was an artist, and when Greenfield looked at her paintings on her Instagram page, he was blown away, he

says.

“The first one I saw was ‘Square 1 Eatery’,” Greenfield says. “It was a really unique piece.

I just loved the silhouettes and the colors. She really impressed me.

You can see the talent and the skill. She has the local feel and understandably so, because she grew up in Jersey City and she knows Jersey City. She became familiar with the neighborhoods. Some of these places have a lot of history to them and its just an ode to the old buildings of Jersey City and the evolution of Jersey City.”
