Retired Commercial Artist Myles Collins exhibits Works at Bowers Gallery in JC

R

etired commercial artist Myles Collins worked in New York City’s advertising industry when billboards, store windows and neon signs were the Internet of the day. In the 1950s, he studied illustration and cartooning in Manhattan and worked for different stores like Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s, creating moving mechanical figures for window dressings and other forms of advertising. Myles, 88, has lived in Jersey City Heights since 1963,

Curators and owners Kristin J. DeAngelis and Matt Schmidt met Myles through his Jersey City Heights neighbor Kris Berry, who showed DeAngelis pictures of Myles’ paintings and sculptures. DeAngelis says she saw enough there for a show at the gallery she runs with her husband.

“I really felt like it was his story,” DeAngelis says.

“Kris showed me photographs of Myles’ sculptures and paintings; his work is so expansive. It’s a unique body of work – portraits, sculpture and abstracts. I

think it’s really unique.”

Myles will have about 20 works in the show including oil paintings and metal sculptures. His panting, Steadfast, is of a woman in a 50s-style blue dress

with a faraway gaze. Then there’s a woman dressed in a Roman-type of costume in a piece called Allure.

His metal sculptures include one that looks like the metal skeleton of a bull; and another that resembles a dandelion.

“I studied illustration and I switched to cartooning and one of the artists was doing Tarzan,” Myles says. “He would teach us his technique. He said you should be able to draw the body from any point, start at any part of the body and visualize. That’s how I learned oil painting.”

“When we first moved here, this area was known as the ‘birth canal’ of Jersey City, there were so many kids out on the street,” Myles laughs. “There were fights, you name it. Now, it’s much calmer.”

“There’s a tenant upstairs who is also a commercial artist.”

Myles says he’s looking forward to the 107 Bowers Gallery exhibit of his work. Although there are so many pieces, there might be a second show in Myles’ future. Maybe a show that features the children’s book he wrote and illustrated about a little girl Patty P. Nutt who gives peanuts to all the animals she meets.

Or the sculptures that look like they could be in a Tim Burton movie.

“I was influenced a lot

by Disney,” Myles says.

“Their movies came out when I was a kid.

Pinocchio had a deep effect on me. Parts like the underwater scenes and how they were able to make things a little distorted, that interested me. After I saw the movie, I’d make drawings of what I’d seen.

High on the cliff over-

looking Manhattan, the River View Arts District (RAD) has been zoned for studios and housing for artists who create in The Heights. Along with the designation, this artist enclave seems to be experiencing a growth spurt with new galleries, performance venues and community art projects making The Heights the new ‘go-to’ artscene in Jersey City.

In the Heights, 107 Bowers Gallery & ArtSpace recently opened its doors and has had several successful exhibitions featuring the work of local artists. In September 2016, artists in The Heights banded together to turn the Holland Tunnel Bridge in the RAD into an outdoor performance venue (see the video on Youtube.com).

And in December, the RAD along with New Jersey Community Capital recently received a Creative Placemaking grant from the Kresge Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

According to the Riverview Neighborhood Association, the RAD is one of nine community and municipal service organizations in the country selected for the Creative Placemaking Grant (along with New Jersey Community Capital), which will be used “to help RAD stakeholders and

NJCC fuse arts, culture and design with urban planning and community development activities to provide affordable housing and arts community centers and live-work artist spaces.”

“It’s a remarkable community of musicians, artists and creative folks who live and work here in the Heights,” Lee Levine, president of the River View Arts district says. “It’s a unique and special place.

If you want to know get a sense of that, go to a poetry night at Fox and Crow.

You’ll find a large selection of the arts community there, where you’ll see older artists and younger artists. This is a community that has very deep roots.”

THE BIRTH OF THE RAD The Heights’ Riverview Arts District (RAD) came about in 1984 when several Jersey City Councilmen including the late Tom Hart introduced a resolution to create an arts district and they mapped it, Levine says.

“A tremendous number of artists moved into the neighborhood starting around 1980,” Levine says.

“It was an arts district in name and map only.

About five years ago, they slightly altered the map, wrote rules and regulations to permit art studio spaces within the RAD. As part of that action to get some

Map of the RAD definition, we got planning staff to agree that Palisade Avenue should have restaurants and commercial spaces. Since that action, the arts community is thriving; we’ve had some movement with bars and restaurants opening on Palisades Avenue.

“The recent Kresge grant is a result of quite a few project partners who got together and formed a steering committee like the Riverview Neighborhood Association, and Live at the Lumberyard,” Levine says. “We are working with New Jersey Community Capital as a partner and we have some very concrete significant goals we are planning in the next couple of years.”

Regarding the Placemaking grant from the Kresge Foundation, Levine says the steering committee has identified a series of vacant properties in the RAD as possible live/work studios for artists.

Anthony Blunda’s silkscreen studio on Ferry Street & Sherman Avenue is called The Factory in honor of Andy Warhol. It is a 10,000 sq. foot space Blunda has reconstructed into an art exhibition/ performance space for NERIEDA’S ODYSSEYHEALING ARTS SHOW coming up on Sat Jan. 14.

“I have a really unique space in the Riverview Arts District,” Blunda says “I’m trying to find a niche to make it affordable for people to show work and perform. The art show is when I pull all the loose ends together and open the doors. I’m a drummer I envision having drumming circles for children and adults. When you get a bunch of little kids together and they make music and are allowed to go crazy...

You get one or two, it might change their lives, just being exposed to that kind of energy.”

by Nerissa Tutiven The show on Jan 14th at The Factory, NERIEDA’S ODDYSEY will be a series of nine paintings Nerissa Tutiven did over the past two years and “reactionary performances” by several local artists including jazz vocalist Ariel Guidry, songstress Carolyn Light,

and spoken word by Jersey City’s Poet Laureate Benedito Figueroa.

Tutiven grew up in The Heights and remembers how it was before the artist community began to bloom.

“I remember going to my grandma’s house and just feeling an overall dark and dismal sense,” Tutiven says, “and then I would say around 2009, when I got out of college, I saw things just blooming, little things.

It was like color was starting to come to the Heights and it was okay to be happy again. From my experience, it all started to change with the Distillery in the Heights. Then (artist) Santiago Cohen moved in; he’s on New York Avenue. With performance, it started with downtown and the Jersey City Slam. They started to meet a lot at PNJ on New York Avenue and that created spoken word. Art House Productions started the Open Mic Night. Then the Bowers Gallery opened.

There’s more of a presence of arts in the Heights and an artist fellowship that’s growing. The artists are becoming more aware of each other in the Heights.”

“I bought my apartment in 2005 and I just saw that there was so much potential in this area. You want to be in a neighborhood where you can walk around and see your neighborhood developing, whether it be a new restaurant or a new bar/café where people can hang out. I believe JC Fridays helped shape things. You’ll see events posted on Facebook. Flyers put up on telephone poles and Modcup (coffee shop) which is an awesome little spot to see what’s going on in the neighborhood. The park across Modcup where you have things going on, and the Farmer’s Market on Sundays, and the Lumberyard has musical events.

It’s taken a while, but I feel it’s really happening.”

Sculptor, painter and draftsman Steve Singer moved to The Heights in 2012 where his metal sculptures adorn his backyard and he paints watercolor street-scenes of The

Heights, Journal Square – you name it.

“The Heights has become more and more an arts enclave,” Singer says.

“There’s an art supply store that recently opened, Kristin opened her gallery on Bowers; there seems to be more solid definite long-term stuff rising out of the ashes. I think exciting things are going on here.”

There are so many incredibly talented artists and musicians now living and working in the neighborhood. It’s an exciting time to be living in the Heights.”

In the summer of 1914, nationalist fervor drove European nations into war. Although the United States did not enter the Great War until the spring of 1917, the conflict that would later be known as World War I had an enormous impact on Hoboken, a small city with large immigrant communities and a busy port.

As early as July 1916, the war intruded on Hudson County with the explosion of a munitions depot on Black Tom Island, just off the coast of Jersey City. The explosion shattered glass for miles around, yet the incident was initially downplayed, to avoid ramping up public support for America’s entry into World War I. Learn more about the “war to

lice Troietto and Mattias Gustafsson are familiar faces to the Downtown Jersey City crowd; their Madame Claude Café on 4th & Brunswick brought French cuisine to the urban dwellers who wanted something more than the usual neighborhood fare. Madame Claude Café has since closed its doors and reopened a bigger and better version of herself just down the street from her old digs.

Meet the new Madame Claude Bis just a few steps off Newark Avenue and down a small stairway where a red curtain beckons hungry city dwellers.

Madame Claude Bis’s basement bistro casts low lighting and warm wooden tables and chairs that create a warm and friendly atmosphere. Where Madame Claude’s Café seated 32, the Bis (named for how Paris streets are numbered

and not “bistro”) seats 80.

The Bis also has a wine list and cocktails, unlike the Café’s BYOB policy. And on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7:30 pm, Gustafsson transforms from restaurateur to balladeer when he and his band, Manouche Bag take to the stage to play gypsy jazz a la legendary Jhengo Reinhardt. The songs are in French and Gustafsson writes most of the band’s repertoire.

Gustafsson and Troietto, who designed the interior, want Madame Claude’s diners to feel comfortable and relaxed, the same feeling diners get in a neighborhood bistro in Paris, Gustafsson says, where the food comes from regional farms. “The restaurants in Paris; nothing comes from Paris.”

Madame Claude’s menu, designed by Gustafsson and Troietto is meant to give diners a taste of the French regions, like Duck Confit from the Southwest of France; Bouillabaisse that hails from the Southeast, a Pork Chop dish inherent of Normandy; “Everything is regional,”

From Plats Principaux, there are La Steak Frites (Hanger steak with pepper, shallot or Roquefort sauce); Filet de Saumo au Basilic (sautéed salmon filet served with a basil sauce and vegetables Julienne). ($23$24)

Gustafsson says. “A typical French bistro will take from different regions.”

sampling from the salad menu includes La Salade de Lentilles aux Pignons (lentil salad with apples and roasted pine nuts); La Salade d’Endives aux Betteraves (endive salad with beets and goat cheese or blue cheese). ($9-$11)

The Assiettes feature Le Plateau de Fromage (assortment of cheese with apple and grapes); Les Escargots (snails with garlic, butter and parsley sauce); and Brandade Pannee (Cod Fish Cake served with a Chipotle Sauce. $9-$12) Les Galettes (crepes) include La Vegetarienne (ratatouille and goat cheese) La Sud Ouest (smoked duck breast, apple and caramelized onions); and La Cochonaille (garlic sausage, Swiss cheese with a fried egg on top. “My wife and I designed the menu,” Gustafsson says. “We know what we like, and we can find all the ingredients we need right here. We do specials like Coq au Vin (chicken in red wine), Pot au Feu (beef with veggies) and Cassoulet (casserole). Maybe some of the ingredients aren’t exactly as we would have them in France, but they’re doable. The system of distribution in the TriState area is great.”

The restaurant is lowkey and relaxed; and so are the owners. Gustafsson doesn’t seem flustered at all, juggling a restaurant and performing as a singer/ songwriter and musician.

He actually seems like he’s having a ball.
