You’ll also discover how local businesses are giving back and learn about a welcoming space designed to support neurodivergent children and their families. Food lovers can look forward to some great pizza offers, while our trusted local dentist helps keep smiles bright.
Of course, we’re also introducing you to our adorable feature pets!
As always, our goal is to connect neighbours, shine a light on the people and businesses that make New Westminster thrive, and celebrate the unique character of life in the Brewery District
Sincerely,
Creating and painting a mural in the Brewery District has been an honour. This vibrant and evolving neighbourhood is a truly unique space I thoroughly enjoyed spending time here - meeting and engaging with the community - while bringing Foreshore to life
What I love about the Brewery District in New Westminster is its vibrant mix of modern living and community charm. With local shops, cozy cafés, and health-focused amenities, it feels welcoming and convenient. The area is beautifully walkable, close to transit, and surrounded by history, making it the perfect blend of urban energy and neighbourhood warmth.
I love the Brewery District because it takes me right back to when I was a teenager, coming here with my mom to walk around and grab lunch. Those outings were our little tradition, and being here now, more than 20 years later, still gives me that same warm, familiar feeling. It’s nostalgic, but it’s also exciting to see how it’s grown into such a vibrant, welcoming place to be.
I love the Brewery District in Sapperton because it feels like its own little pocket of the city. It’s laid back, walkable, and full of character. I can grab a coffee, pop into a local shop, walk the dog, and meet friends for a pint, all within a few blocks. It’s the kind of neighbourhood that feels easy to love.
We love everything about Brewery District, especially BAK'D Cookies. We are addicted!
Brewery District Living magazine is doing wonderful work for the New Westminster community By highlighting handmade creations, supporting small businesses, and sharing valuable knowledge, they help local voices shine Their dedication to promoting community events and encouraging social engagement truly strengthens connections and creates a positive impact in our neighbourhood. We love being part of, and serving, this exciting and connected community!
As a small business owner, I love being part of such a supportive and encouraging community. The neighbourhood is a beautiful and evolving space, mixing New Westminster's iconic heritage vibe with modern architecture for growing families and businesses. It's a great place to live and work in.
KELLY CANNELL
Kelly Cannell is a celebrated Indigenous Coast Salish artist from the Musqueam Nation in Vancouver, B C , whose dynamic and thought-provoking works embody a deep connection to her culture and the natural environment Drawing from the rich traditions of the Coast Salish Musqueam community, her art combines intricate detail and vivid colour, while exploring innovative approaches to traditional themes.
Her passion for glass art has taken her to prominent institutions such as the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington and The Glass Furnace in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2019, she earned a contemporary art scholarship, granting her the opportunity to collaborate with master glassblowers at the Berengo Glass Studio in Murano, Italy. Kelly also refined her skills in silk screen printing and acrylic painting at Emily Carr University, blending traditional and modern techniques to create works that are both deeply rooted in her heritage and strikingly original
Kelly’s public art installations are featured across Greater Vancouver and beyond, reflecting her commitment to environmental themes, cultural preservation, and community engagement Her work raises awareness about the importance of stewardship while honouring Coast Salish traditions In 2024, she received the prestigious Polygon BC Achievement First Nations Art Award, further solidifying her influence in the Canadian art scene. With additional installations planned, her impact continues to grow. Through her artistry, she continues to preserve and evolve Coast Salish traditions, inspiring audiences while bridging the past with the future.
that reflects the community and history of New Westminster My inspiration came immediately from the connection to the Fraser River.
“The Fraser River has played a crucial role in the development and history of New Westminster. From the early days, when the Coast Salish peoples navigated its waters in canoes, to its evolution into a major shipping route, the river has been a lifeline for the community. Its importance extends beyond human activity, sustaining the balance of the entire ecosystem.
In this artwork, I sought to capture the essence of the Fraser River’s foreshores, including the adjacent Brunette River. These waterways have long been vital to the Coast Salish peoples, providing an abundance of food such as salmon, which hold profound cultural significance
The design highlights the rich ecosystem of these waters and shores Young salmon swim through the tidal grasses, while a frog emerges from the foliage Beneath the surface, partially concealed by the grasses, the head of a great blue heron appears as it hunts - this majestic predator thrives in the same environment.
This artwork honours the river’s historical significance to New Westminster and its essential role in supporting the diverse life forms that depend on it.”

From the heart of a cozy home in New Westminster BC, Artsy Candle Co. was born - crafted with love, memory, and the unmistakable warmth of the Filipino spirit. Founders Ramon and Verna, both proudly Filipino, grew up surrounded by the lush scents of tropical flowers, the rich aroma of freshly brewed Kapeng Barako, and the comforting smell of Pandesal wafting from a morning kitchen.
When they moved to Canada, they found themselves longing for those scents - the kind that instantly brings you home, no matter how far you’ve gone So they began creating candles that didn’t just smell good - they told stories
Hand-poured with purpose, Artsy Candle Co candles are made from 100% natural soy wax and inspired by the beloved places, flavours, and folklore of the Philippines. From the sunny zest of Kalamansi, the sweetness of Halo-Halo, to the floral beauty of Sampaguita, each scent rekindles a memory - of childhood summers, fiestas, cozy mornings, and heartfelt family moments.
“Each Artsy Candle is more than fragrance - it’s a bridge to your roots, a whisper of home, and a celebration of Filipino identity
Whether you’re far from the islands or just want to share the richness of the culture with others, these candles are a way to carry a piece of the Philippines wherever you go ”
A tribute to the famous national flower of the Philippines! The Sampaguita flower is often described as sweet, fragrant, and jasmine-like It has a pleasant and delicate floral aroma, and it is widely recognized for its aromatic qualities, making it a popular choice for leis and garlands in many Southeast Asian countries
A fresh and uplifting fragrance with a combination of floral and citrus scents It features the sweet aroma of Calamansi blossoms, the zing of lime peel, and the subtle hint of lemon flower buds.
Reminiscent of the popular island destination, Boracay is an explosion of tropical fruits and rum, beginning with juicy tangerine, orange peel, and lemon, followed by a splash of sweet pineapple and tropical coconut scents.
But their journey doesn’t stop at nostalgia - it also honors legend, love, and everyday magic. Introducing three captivating new scents that deepen the collection’s storytelling:
A romantic tribute to love in all its forms. With the deep floral notes of velvety red roses softened by creamy vanilla, Mahal Kita evokes handwritten letters, gentle embraces, and whispered “I love you’s” under the stars Light this candle and be reminded of love that feels like home
Inspired by the legendary guardian of Mount Makiling, this mystical blend captures the scent of an enchanted forest after rain Notes of ylang-ylang, moss, and earthy wood invite you into a world of nature, grace, and quiet strength - a tribute to feminine power, mystery, and protection
A breath of the countryside, Bahay Kubo captures the scent of a peaceful rural morning. Crisp bamboo mingles with hints of lemongrass and green herbs, transporting you to a nipa hut surrounded by rice fields and banana trees Simple, clean, and deeply grounding
Each Artsy Candle is more than fragrance - it’s a bridge to your roots, a whisper of home, and a celebration of Filipino identity Whether you’re far from the islands or just want to share the richness of the culture with others, these candles are a way to carry a piece of the Philippines wherever you go.
Light a memory. Share a story. Welcome home - with Artsy Candle Co.

PRESENTED BY THE COVE INDOOR PLAY CENTRE
PHOTOS BY MONIZA PERIM, POC PHOTOS
In the heart of New Westminster, behind the glass doors of The Cove Indoor Play Centre, a quiet revolution is taking place. It doesn’t shout or demand attention - it hums with laughter, soft voices, and the steady heartbeat of a woman determined to change the way the world sees children with autism, ADHD, and developmental differences
That woman is Trisha Ocampo
Her story isn’t one you can separate from her work. Trisha grew up with an autistic brother. She remembers the stares in grocery stores, the whispered judgments, the way her mother’s face would tighten when an outing had to be cut short because the world simply wasn’t built with their needs in mind. Those memories didn’t harden her - they lit a fire in her
When she opened The Cove, it wasn’t just to run a business It was to build the place her own family once needed but couldn’t find - a place where sensory needs are respected, where children can play without fear of being “too much” or “not enough,” and where parents can breathe without apology.
Parents feel that difference the moment they step inside. As Sara Alhowar shared, “The space at The Cove Indoor Play is so beautiful and peaceful, and the staff are so welcoming and warm It’s truly inclusive and welcoming for kids of all backgrounds Trisha is extremely passionate and dedicated to support moms in finding an inclusive and safe space for their neurodivergent kids ”
Every inch of The Cove is designed with intention. The sensory room offers a haven for little ones who need a moment of calm. Lighting is gentle, textures are inviting, and sound levels are balanced. There is no “one size fits all” here - only the understanding that every child’s way of engaging with the world is valid.
For Lesley Santillan, who celebrated her daughter’s fifth birthday at The Cove, that care made all the difference “Some indoor play places can be loud and overwhelming for parents and kids However, Trish has created a beautiful peaceful place where kids can play and adults can relax I loved how we had a private room in the back of the play area with a window It is a beautiful space I would highly recommend The Cove for any child’s birthday party or even just a cozy place to hang out on a rainy day ”
At The Cove, families find more than just play - they find community, support, and hope. We’ve added services like speech therapy, behavioural consulting, inclusive day camps, and even Saturday massages in partnership with WCCMT (West Coast College of Massage Therapy).
Some call it community work Trisha calls it God’s work She believes her purpose is to serve, to love without conditions, and to create a ripple effect that changes not just how children experience the world but how the world experiences them.
One child at a time. One conversation at a time. The Cove is showing that with the right support, every child can thrive. And in doing so, it’s changing not just minds but hearts.
Help Save The Cove! This space has been a lifeline for so many neurodiverse children and their families, but we are at risk of losing it. Please consider donating to The Cove’s GoFundMe campaign to help keep this special and much needed place in New Westminster.

FRESHSLICE PIZZA
Since opening our doors in 2009, Freshslice Pizza at 417 E Columbia Street has been more than just a place to grab a delicious slice - we’ve been a part of the New Westminster community for nearly 16 years From day one, our mission has been simple: to serve fresh, flavourful, and healthy pizza made with love, using our signature multigrain dough and purely Canadian ingredients
Over the years, we’ve grown, learned, and perfected our craft Today, our customers enjoy even more variety, better taste, and faster service than ever before. Whether it’s a quick lunch, a family dinner, or a large group catering order, our friendly team is always ready with a warm smile and a hot pizza straight from the oven.
But Freshslice is more than great pizza - it’s about giving back. In 2018, our parent company, Freshslice Holdings Ltd., founded Freshslice Cares (FSC), an independent, not-for-profit organization with a heartfelt mission: helping kids in need enjoy the joy of sports. We know that many families, for various reasons, can’t afford the costs of sports registration, uniforms, or equipment. That’s where FSC steps in - partnering with local sports associations to identify children who need a helping hand and contributing financially so they can play, grow, and thrive
The impact has been inspiring. In 2023 alone, thanks to the generosity of our guests and sponsors, we raised over $400,000 to help kids across Canada get the gear and opportunities they deserve. At Freshslice, we believe every child should have the chance to just be a kid - and play.
Here in New Westminster, we’re also showing our gratitude to the everyday heroes who keep our city running Our Community Heroes Discount gives 20% off every order to hospital staff, police, fire & rescue crews, construction workers, Amazon staff & drivers, and courier drivers - because real heroes deserve a real reward
Need catering for your workplace, event, or gathering? We’ve got you covered! Our special delivery options ensure your order arrives hot, fresh, and right on timewhether you’re feeding a small team or a large crowd Place your order in advance, and we’ll handle the rest with speed and care.

WORDS BY NADINE JOPSON

Heartberry Soda, launched just last summer, is a vibrant craft soda company that is making a significant impact in the beverage industry. Owned and operated by Nadine Jopson, a fearless Indigenous entrepreneur from the Cree First Nation, Heartberry Soda is a celebration of tradition, innovation, and ancestral knowledge
The company's name is inspired by the Indigenous term for strawberry, "heart-berry," which has long been honoured in Indigenous cultures This name reflects not only the fruit's shape but also symbolizes love, connection, and community This aligns perfectly with Heartberry Soda's mission to foster a community deeply connected to the land and dedicated to honouring tradition.
Heartberry Soda's labels thoughtfully showcase Nadine's culture, featuring both syllabic and Romanisation translations of the Cree language for each flavour. Along with a ribbon design along the top pays homage to ribbon skirts, symbolizing healing, resilience, and identity.
Currently, Heartberry Soda offers four unique flavours: Raspberry Fireweed, Lemon Birch Bark, Strawberry Rhubarb, and Ginger Rosehip. Each flavour incorporates indigenous plant medicines, highlighting the company's commitment to its values Heartberry Soda is dedicated to working with Indigenous people who ethically and respectfully harvest these plant medicines
“The company's name is inspired by the Indigenous term for strawberry, "heartberry," which has long been honoured in Indigenous cultures. This name reflects not only the fruit's shape but also symbolizes love, connection, and community”
Another key aspect of Heartberry Soda is its low sugar content Nadine prioritized creating drinks that are not full of sugar, especially given that many in the Indigenous population struggle with diabetes. Heartberry Soda aims to provide a delicious option that everyone can enjoy without exacerbating health issues or concerns associated with high-sugar, high-calorie beverages.
Its first year in production has been incredibly successful, with tremendous support from all over North America. With a bright future ahead, plans include increasing production with its own facility and focusing on larger distribution.
RHUB A R B
ALLISON CANVIN
When I first moved out on my own, my biggest concern wasn’t the rent, or the loneliness, or whether I could keep a houseplant alive (I’ve actually got a small jungle going). It was my dog, Sandy. Sandy is a 6-year-old Southeast Asian village dog I adopted in Thailand. She’s fiercely independent (think… lone wolf energy) but also incredibly sensitive. She’s not a Velcro dog. She doesn’t want to follow you around or stare into your soul. But if the vibe is off? Her stomach will let everyone know. Loudly. And usually on the rug.
She’s never been great with people or other dogs. She prefers a quiet life, free of loud noises, clingy humans, or any creature that dares to have a social battery. Except cats Sandy loves cats Like, weirdly adores them
So, in a moment of well-intentioned chaos, I got her one
Enter: Newt Or, as he’s known in this house, Rootin’ Tootin’ Newton A 1-year-old tuxedo cat with medium hair and maximum attitude Newt is everything Sandy isn’t - needy, nosy, and constantly performing stunts that defy both gravity and logic He acts more like a dog than she does He’ll follow you around yelling like you’re late for an appointment you didn’t know you had. He loves attention, has zero sense of personal space, and his favourite hobby is knocking things off shelves while making direct eye contact.
The first week I brought him home, I expected a slow, tense adjustment. But Sandy, true to form, took one look at him and said, “Finally. Someone normal.”
Now, six months in, they’re fully bonded. They chase each other around the house, steal each other’s beds, and somehow manage to make a two-pet home feel like a sitcom with a live studio audience I didn’t know I needed this little duo, but turns out, all it took was a chaotic cat to bring out the best in my introverted dog (with the added bonus of fewer digestive meltdowns)
