Love for River District

What I love most about River District is its calm energy by the river, a space that inspires peace and creativity. I enjoy walking along its trails, embracing nature, the view of the water, and the vibrant community around it. It’s a place that invites me to dream and create.

- Marian , visual Artist & Interior Designer

What I love most about living in the River District is the beautiful scenery - the nearby river, lush greenery, and walkable neighbourhoods It’s a family-friendly, welcoming community with kind neighbours and everything you need close by, from restaurants and grocery stores to banks and dental clinics. It truly feels like a perfect place to call home.

- Huong , Meloocrochet

Walks through River District are never just walksthey’re social gatherings Olivia lives for those encounters, rolling onto her back with excitement whenever she sees a familiar pup or a friendly neighbour ready to give her a belly rub

Of course, life in River District also means great food and dog-friendly patios Olivia is a regular at Bufala, Lucky Taco, and Local Public Eatery, where she soaks up the attention almost as much as the sunshine. And when someone says the magic word - “Bosley’s” - watch out. Olivia puts her full 18 pounds of determination into leading the way, eager to greet the welcoming staff and stock up on her favourite treats.

- Leann & Jeff , Proud Parents of Olivia

I love River District because it keeps getting better every year. It’s where I shop for my home and pets, see my dentist and physio, and get my sweat on at Orangetheory four days a week Most of all, River District is about the people - my OTF River District fam and the warm, welcoming community

- Leeann , Town Hall Brands

One of the most appealing aspects of the River District is its vibrant and welcoming dog-friendly community. Residents often form close bonds with each other through their shared love for their furry companions, to the extent that they may be more familiar with the dogs' names than their owners' This unique and heartwarming connection adds a special charm to the neighbourhood, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among its residents

- Arnie & Nancy , Dog Parents to Gus

I moved to the area in 1991 and never left There was so much to keep me here The area is centrally located in Metro Vancouver Then you add the nature that surrounds us, the walking paths, the working river, the bird life, lots of opportunities to connect with other residents in the community when going for a walk. The natural spaces go a long way to fostering community and connecting people in this beautiful part of the City.

- Barbara , Tugboat Landing Artisan Market

I’m a dog photographer, and this year my team and I had a blast taking portraits at Day of the Dog in the River District. I was so excited to see how many dog lovers live in the neighbourhood! I’m biased, but I think dog people are awesome, so I can’t wait to spend more time getting to know the community!

Mural Artist Spotlight: Marian González

WORDS & ARTWORK BY

ARTIST BIO

Marian González, known as Art. Marian G, is a visual artist and interior designer from Guadalajara, Mexico, currently based in Vancouver, Canada. Her work stands out for merging art with healing, creating pieces that radiate harmony, colour, and purpose.

From an early age, Marian discovered in painting a language to express what words could not A graduate in Interior Design and Environment, she has cultivated a solid artistic foundation enriched by techniques such as oil, acrylic, watercolour, and muralism Throughout her career, she has created works on canvas, customised pieces, and murals in public spaces and restaurants in Vancouver, including “Wise Old Man and Agaves” and “Mexican Vegetation”, where she captures the richness of her cultural heritage

Beyond technique, her art is born from a deep commitment to emotional transformation. Marian believes that every brushstroke is an opportunity to heal, to reconnect with one’s essence, and to bring life back both to people and to spaces. Her style is inspired by memory, spirituality, and the vibrant energy of Mexico, woven into a contemporary language that resonates with new audiences.

Today, Marian positions herself as an emerging artist seeking to share her vision in galleries, communities, and cultural projects in Vancouver, always carrying a message: art is medicine for the soul and a bridge of connection with life

ARTWORK DESCRIPTION

“Lele” is a piece that pays tribute to the traditional Otomí doll, recognised as a Cultural Heritage of Querétaro and celebrated as a symbol of Mexican identity. In this painting, Marian G reinterprets Lele through an intimate and festive lens, placing her in a Christmas setting illuminated by colourful lights that evoke unity, hope, and the warmth of home.

The doll, painted with vibrant tones in her attire, represents far more than a handcrafted toy: she is a guardian of memory, Indigenous heritage, and the connection to childhood. Each brushstroke conveys tenderness and familiarity, reminding us of the importance of embracing our roots and honouring the traditions that shape us.

The doll, painted with vibrant tones in her attire, represents far more than a handcrafted toy: she is a guardian of memory, Indigenous heritage, and the connection to childhood.

The Christmas environment is not incidental but rather a metaphor for cultural encounter: the ancestral spirituality of Mexico converses with the universal atmosphere of celebration and love that Christmas brings. Lele, hanging beneath green branches adorned with glowing lights, becomes a bridge between the ancient and the contemporary, the local and the global.

Through this painting, Marian reaffirms her artistic mission: to transform emotions into colour, to rescue symbols that tell stories, and to transmit, through tenderness and memory, a message of unity and healing.

“Lele” stands as a reminder that cultural identity can illuminate new paths and embrace the world with love.

Is visiting the Tugboat Landing Artisan Market part of your family’s annual holiday tradition? If not, you are missing out on what has become a must see for holiday shopping for residents along the Fraser River

Now in its 9 year, the idea for the market came about during a conversation on a dog walk by the river between two creative souls, Barbara Borchardt and Jill Bartlett. Learning of Jill’s strong artistic background and design background and extensive experience in web and graphic design, the plan started to form. I’ve spent more than two decades building a career in marketing and public relations, helping companies and individuals share their stories. My journey started when I went to school at 24 to study marketing A co-op placement at the BC Wine Institute led to a role with Christine Coletta, who was the executive director, where I learned the ropes of PR while taking night classes in media relations, event management, and design This is where Andrew von Rosen, thenboyfriend, now husband, did the design for our team from his design consultancy

We left the Wine Institute and then we managed campaigns for BC wineries like Sumac Ridge, JacksonTriggs, and Inniskillin, and was the publicist that launched See Ya Later Ranch, Nk’Mip Cellars, and Osoyoos Larose wineries in the early 2000s. It was an exciting time where I landed TV features, wrote speeches for CEOs, trained winemakers for media interviews, and earned my WSET Levels 1 and 2. After 10 years together Christine invited me and Julian Scholefield to join her as her business partners, and we formed Coletta and Associates.

Christine later went on to open Haywire winery, so we closed the agency, and since Andrew was already doing all of our graphic design, in 2013, Andrew and I launched Town Hall Brands from the basement of our southeast Vancouver home with a small team

We started off doing the PR and design for Christine’s winery and a few other BC wine clients, and as word spread, we outgrew the house and moved into our Mount Pleasant loft office, where we still are today We still live in the East Fraserlands and I work from home 2 days a week.

We’ve grown into a full-service agency with a wonderful team, offering branding, graphic design, social media, PR, influencer relations and events for clients. Working in wine is a specialization from my days with Coletta, but we work with many industries, including sports, agriculture, tourism food, and more. In 2022, we introduced a four-day workweek, and we’re proud to have been recognized for our workplace culture and are a living wage employer.

In 2025, I was humbled to be recognized as a Master Marketer by Wines of BC and named one of Wine Industry Advisor’s “Wine’s Most Inspiring People ” I see these recognitions not just as personal milestones, but as a celebration of our amazing team and of the wine industry I’m so proud to serve

When I am not working, I am spending time with my family and our senior dog, and I am an avid bird watcher. Living along the Fraser River allows me to see so many amazing birds!

TOWN HALL

We asked Leeann which wines she would recommend celebrating with this holiday season.

Here are some of her top picks:

With the holiday season upon us, there is no better excuse to gather and a thoughtfully chosen wine makes every moment more memorable.

For Christmas Eve dinner, reach for the Haywire Pinot Noir 2012, whose intense cherry aromas, spiced red berry flavours, and earthy underpinnings lend warmth and elegance to turkey, stuffing, and roasted vegetables.

On Christmas morning, make brunch sparkle with the Narrative XC Method Sparkling which is lively, fresh, creamy, and medium bodied, and perfect for mimosas.

For Boxing Day leftovers, settle in with the Monte Creek Living Land Chardonnay, whose plush, viscous texture and notes of pear, citrus, wet stone, and subtle caramel offer comfort without heaviness

When New Year’s Eve arrives, you can’t go wrong with the prestige and finesse of Bollinger Special Cuvée, the classic champagne to welcome midnight with style

For a light, bright pour on New Year’s Day lunch, the Blasted Church Pinot Gris brings refreshing acidity and zippy character to help you start the year fresh.

For host or guest gifting, the Okanagan Crush Pad fortified wine rounds things out beautifully with its concentrated sweetness and generosity.

All of these wines are available at Everything Wine in the River District, making it easy to stock up locally for every toast, course, and gesture of gratitude this season.

Meloocrochet

WORDS, IMAGES, & CRAFTS BY HUONG TRAN

I’m a small business owner and self-taught crochet artist with a love for handmade craftsmanship and vibrant design Meloocrochet was born from a simple moment of inspiration.

It all started during a casual visit to the New Westminster Quay shopping mall. I remember walking through the mall and spotting the most charming, colourful crochet piece that immediately caught my eye - a cat amigurumi! It was so beautifully made. Although I didn’t buy it, something about it sparked a curiosity in me I left the store that day inspired - not to own the piece, but to learn how to make something just like it with my own two hands

In November 2024, I picked up my first crochet hook and began teaching myself through online tutorials, and lots of trial and error. I dove headfirst into the world of yarn, stitches, and endless creativity. What began as a hobby quickly grew into a true passion - and eventually, a small business I’m incredibly proud of.

One of the best parts of this journey is seeing the joy on people’s faces when they receive something I’ve made. It reminds me why I startedand it fuels me to keep creating.

oocrochet, I create a wide range of t items - from playful keychains and pots to whimsical amigurumi and One of my specialties (and to make!) is crocheted floral ecially sunflowers and other flower ts or pots. They make perfect gifts even just a thoughtful treat for

at local craft markets and connect who are just as excited about am One of the best parts of this he joy on people’s faces when they I’ve made It reminds me why I me to keep creating

t around the corner, I also want to uge Christmas fanatic! I absolutely out the season - from the cozy atmosphere to the festive spirit - but what I adore most are the beautiful lights and the magic of freshly fallen snow. It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year, and I find so much inspiration in it for my seasonal pieces.

Whether you’re looking for a unique gift, a custom order, or simply want to support a handmade business, I’d love to work with you At Meloocrochet, every piece is made with care, creativity, and a whole lot of love

Thanks for stopping by and giving this a read!

Warmly, Huong

PHOTOS BY COLD NOSE STUDIO, TARA PRATT (DAY OF THE DOG BOOTH PHOTO)

Cold Nose Studio is all about capturing dogs just as they are - joyful, quirky, soulful, and unique Specializing in natural, personality-packed portraits, the studio showcases what makes every pup one-of-a-kind.

MeetJessieFraser,thehumanbehindthelens.Jessie, howdidthisallbegin?

My love for photography first sparked while I was pursuing a master’s degree in Archival Science, with a focus on photographs I was fascinated by the blend of technical skill and artistry - so I bought a camera My first model was my own dog, Loki, a charming but cranky curmudgeon, who patiently endured my experiments with new lights and lenses Inspiration struck, and soon I was inviting friends from the dog park to bring their pups in for portraits. And just like that, Cold Nose Studio was hatched.

Whydogs?

Dogs aren’t self-conscious Unlike us humans - who stress about our hair, our pose, or whether we look “camera-ready” - dogs simply are They show up authentically, unapologetically themselves Photographing them is pure joy, and honestly, I think they set the best example for us all

Ifthey’resocarefree,howdoyougetthemtofocus?

Some dogs nail it right away, locking eyes with the camera like pros. Others… not so much. That’s where the fun begins! I’ll ask owners to help position their pup and break out the treats while I squeak toys, or make ridiculous noises, until I get the perfect shot The chaos is half the charm, and it always leads to the best candid moments

Dogs aren’t self-conscious. They show up authentically, unapologetically themselves. Photographing them is pure joy, and honestly, I think they set the best example for us all.

DentalCare:TheQuietMakeoverThat TransformsYourPet’sHealth

Whydentaldaymattersmorethanyouthink

If your dog or cat has “doggy breath,” chews on one side, drools, or just isn’t herself, oral pain could be the reason. That’s why Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) should be part of your pet’s routine care.

A COHAT isn’t a quick brush; it’s a veterinarian-led reset of your pet’s mouth that treats disease you can’t see and restores everyday comfort. Pets hide dental pain well - COHAT brings relief, protects vital organs, and gives you back a happier companion. WhataCOHATincludes-beyondasimplecleaning

A proper COHAT is a step-by-step medical procedure. After a full exam, your pet is placed under carefully managed anesthesia so the team can clean above and below the gumline, chart every tooth, and take fullmouth dental radiographs to find hidden problems like fractures, resorptive lesions, and bone loss Diseased teeth are treated - sometimes extracted - and the remaining teeth are polished to slow plaque from returning The result is a healthier mouth, fresher breath, and a pet who can eat, play, and cuddle without pain

Safetyfirst:anesthesia,monitoring,andpaincontrol

Modern COHAT protocols prioritize safety and comfort. Expect pre-anesthetic checks, tailored drug choices, an IV catheter for support, and continuous monitoring of heart, breathing, temperature, and blood oxygen Local nerve blocks and multimodal pain relief keep pets comfortable, while warming support maintains body temperature This standard of care makes a thorough, painless cleaning - and accurate Xrays - possible

Howtoprepare(andwhattoexpect)

Before dental day, your team will guide you on fasting and medications On arrival, your pet gets a nose-to-tail check and pre-procedure review During the COHAT, you’ll receive updates if X-rays reveal issues, and you’ll go home with a clear summary of what was found and fixed Most pets are alert the same day, with simple home-care instructions for a smooth recovery

Aftercarethatkeepsthesparkle

COHAT is the reset; daily habits keep the gains Your plan may include tooth-brushing how-tos, dental diets or chews, antiseptic rinses, and a recheck schedule These steps slow plaque, extend the life of dental work, and space out future cleanings Recommendations are tailored to what your pet tolerates - because the best plan is the one you can do

We know cats! RAPS also owns and operates the RAPS Cat Sanctuary.

Whentoscheduleandhowoften

If your veterinarian has noted tartar, gingivitis, broken teeth, oral bleeding, or foul breath, it’s time. Many pets benefit from an annual COHAT; others - especially small-breed dogs and cats prone to dental disease - may need more frequent care Timing is individualized to your pet’s age, breed, and mouth

Asimplepromisewithbigimpact

COHAT turns “fine, I guess” into “playful, comfy, and cuddly again ” It prevents infections, makes meals enjoyable, and protects whole-body health - because a healthy mouth supports a healthy heart, kidneys, and more Ask your veterinarian about scheduling your pet’s COHAT and get ready to meet the happier version of your friend

SpecialOfferforRiverDistrictClients-50%Off dentalcleanings!

RAPS Animal Hospital is offering 50% off all dental cleanings and 25% off extractions for River District clients through November until December 31st, 2025. To receive this special, simply book an initial examination with us before scheduling your dental procedure. This limited-time discount makes it easier and more affordable to give your pet high-quality care.

Readytostart?

Book a dental exam to see if your pet is due for COHAT. You’ll leave with a clear plan, a cost estimate, and confidence that you’re doing one of the most impactful things for your pet’s lifelong wellbeing.

RAPS Animal Hospital is the River District’s community-owned, not-for-profit, full-service veterinary hospital, located just across the Knight Street Bridge in the Richmond Auto Mall, with plenty of free parking. We care for dogs, cats, and exotic pets - and we take the profit motive out of vet care. We also offer payment plans, because every pet deserves access to the care they need Your pet’s health is our only bottom line!

Meet our Feature Pet

WORDS & IMAGES BY LEANN & JEFF

Born in Northern BC on April 4, 2024, Olivia is a true Canadian girl at heart At just eight weeks old, she joined her forever family in Vancouver’s River District - and since that very first day, she’s been spreading love, joy, and tail wags to everyone she meets

Affectionate toward people, dogs, and every creature alike, Olivia embodies the best of her breed: gentle, social, and endlessly charming. Whether she’s snoozing in a sunny spot at home or off on an outdoor adventure, Olivia’s zest for life is contagious.

Olivia's adventurous side blossomed last year when she took her very first road trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon, where she became our little beach babe, surfer girl

Back home, one of her favourite Vancouver hangouts is Kitsilano Maritime Beach, where she happily races along the sand and makes fast friends with dogs of all sizes.

But nothing compares to her community right here in River District Each morning, Olivia begins her day with an important task: checking whether her best buddy Doug, a golden retriever, is out in his yard She trots over to his gate, hoping for a nose-to-nose boop before the day begins

Walks through River District are never just walks - they’re social gatherings. Olivia lives for those encounters, rolling onto her back with excitement whenever she sees a familiar pup or a friendly neighbour ready to give her a belly rub.

Of course, life in River District also means great food and dog-friendly patios Olivia is a regular at Bufala, Lucky Taco, and Local Public Eatery, where she soaks up the attention almost as much as the sunshine And when someone says the magic word - “Bosley’s” - watch out. Olivia puts her full 18 pounds of determination into leading the way, eager to greet the welcoming staff and stock up on her favourite treats.

With her sweet spirit, love for her community, and boundless energy for both adventure and snuggles, Olivia's days are filled with connection, play and joy - the perfect recipe for a happy River District pup Much like the glistening Fraser River that defines the neighbourhood, Olivia brings a sparkle to every moment
