Dear Neighbours

Welcome to the very first issue of Brewery District Living! We’re so excited to bring you this new bi-monthly print and digital community magazine, created to celebrate the people, places, and pets that make the Brewery District and surrounding areas of New Westminster feel like home.

There’s something really special about life herewhere heritage buildings and modern spaces come together, set against riverside views and the warmth of a close-knit, inclusive community Whether you’re browsing for handmade treasures at a market, grabbing a sweet treat from your favourite spot, or enjoying public art on your walk, there’s always something to see and do!

In this issue, we’re shining a light on some of the local businesses we love - eateries, studios, and makers that bring such unique diversity to our neighbourhood. You’ll also find special offers, ideas for staying active and connected, plus a feature pet that is sure to brighten your day!

Our hope is that Brewery District Living brings neighbours a little closer, shines a light on our local gems, and celebrates all the things that make this community so special.

Sincerely,

Love for Brewery District

When I was painting the ‘Love Love’ mural (both times), everyone was so friendly and encouraging I could tell the residents had a lot of heart, and they really cared about where they lived Everyone I interacted with at the nearby shops were also so nice. Steve’s Poké even offered me free Poke one day while I was painting because they were grateful for the art being put in their area. It was really sweet!

& Multi-disciplinary Visual Artist

I love the creative and friendly energy of Brewery District The area is full of artists, makers, and supportive locals who value handmade work. Whether it’s walking by inspiring murals, chatting with small business owners, or joining community events, there’s always something beautiful and uplifting happening here. It truly feels like home.

Emma , Emma Handmade Jewelry

What we love most about Wesgroup’s Brewery District is the friendly, tight-knit community. The neighbours here are incredibly warm - always stopping by for a chat, sharing kind words, or supporting local. It feels like everyone’s cheering each other on, which makes running a small business here feel extra special (and a whole lot more fun!)

Jessica & Andy , BAK'D

We love the walkability of the Brewery district and the great green spaces nearby Sapperton Park is the pawfect summer spot for a picnic, and the Brunette-Fraser River Greenway is a quiet spot for walkies along the river. Plus, Yum Donuts and BAK'D are dangerously close treat spots, and while Trevor can't partake, his humans definitely do!

- Erin , Proud Pawrent of Trevor

The Brewery District is a wonderful community with a wide range of small businesses, dining and community resources. Plus the surrounding neighbourhood is safe, filled with parks and lots to do. We have loved living and raising our family in the Brewery District

- Jess & Clete , Motion & Music

Performing Arts Academy

What I like most about the Brewery District community is the unique blend of history and modern vibrancy. It's a neighbourhood with deep roots, often known for its historic buildings and ties to local brewing history, but it's also evolved into a lively, welcoming area with a strong sense of local pride. The community feels close-knit, with a great mix of small businesses, walkable streets, local events, and people who genuinely care about the neighbourhood’s future. There's a real balance of culture, creativity, and connection that makes it stand out

Mural Artist Spotlight: Ciele Beau

My name is Ciele Beau, and I am a multi-disciplinary visual artist, based out of Vancouver, Canada (the unceded lands of the Squamish, Musqeum, and TsleilWaututh First Nations). I graduated with a BFA, Major in Visual Arts, from the University of Victoria, and received my 2D Design Certificate from Emily Carr University of Art and Design

My practice includes painting, illustration, murals and design I use bright bold hues and playful imagery as part of my visual language Some pillars of my work include community, the human experience, and sometimes a cheeky social commentary (where appropriate) Community engagement, and a focus on the impact that artwork has on the communities it’s installed in or showcased to is very important to my practice and my approach to public works, and client projects.

I am a full-time freelance creative, and have worked with companies such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Warner Brothers (CW’s Riverdale), Simons, Slack, Adobe, Topo Chico Hard Seltzer, City of Vancouver, City of Richmond, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Mural Festival, Public Disco, Vancouver Pride, Georgia Straight, Sarah McLachlan School of Music, Park Production House, Wesgroup Properties, PCI Developments, various BIA's and more h h i hi h i l i l

MURAL STATEMENT

In 2021 I was approached by Wesgroup Properties to design and paint a ground mural in the Brewery District, for the central plaza off Nelson Court They wanted it to be painted for Pride month in June, with the intention of it staying up all summer The goal was to add colour to the space, and a message or design that made the environment feel welcoming to everyone in the neighbourhood but especially celebratory for the LGBTQ2A+ members of the community.

As a queer artist myself, I was very excited to create this piece, and decided on incorporating the wellknown phrase Love is Love into the mural. In the end I chose to just put ‘Love Love’ instead - a gentle call in. Love all love. All love is love. Simply, love love.

While it was originally meant to be a temporary mural, to my surprise, I was asked to come back two years later in 2023 to refresh and repaint it!

I had a lot of fun creating this mural, and I’m grateful to have been able to contribute something to this beautiful neighbourhood!

“Armed with no experience and a big dream, the sibling duo began baking 5 oz ooey gooey cookies with bold flavours that challenged the typical chocolate chip.”

BAK'D began in the heart of the pandemic, when a 22year-old marketing grad (Jess!) and her 17-year-old brother (Andy!) decided to turn their kitchen into a cookie lab. What started as a fun side project to showcase Andy’s baking skills and Jess’s love for branding quickly transformed into something much more - a full-blown cookie movement rooted in family, flavour, and fun.

Armed with no experience and a big dream, the sibling duo began baking 5 oz ooey gooey cookies with bold flavours that challenged the typical chocolate chip Think Matcha Latte, Gimme S’mores, and Dubai Pistachio Chocolate - all using premium ingredients, unique combinations, and no shortcuts, ever

But BAK'D is more than cookies It’s a community It’s cheeky, warm, and unapologetically playful Whether we’re dancing behind the counter, hosting collabs with other local brands, or popping up at a farmers’ market near you - we’re all about creating connection through sweetness.

Our brand values are baked into everything we do. We're all about quality (no cutting corners), equity (no cookie-cutter solutions), and relationship building (we remember your fave flavour). As a family-run biz, we believe in showing up with heart, celebrating the imperfectly perfect, and making every touchpoint feel like you're chatting with a friend.

We’ve been lucky to work with incredible partners like the Vancouver Food Bank, BC Cancer Foundation, and Dankmart, and we're just getting started With plans to expand across Vancouver and beyond, our goal is simple: spread joy, one cookie at a time

So, whether you're a first-time taster or a loyal BAK’D bestie, thank you for being part of our sweet little revolution. Come by the shop, say hi, and don’t be surprised if you leave with a smile (and a cookie in each hand).

PHOTOS CREDITED TO MOTION & MUSIC PERFORMING ARTS

For over 15 years, this well-loved New West performing arts studio has shared its joy for dance, musical theatre, music and yoga with residents of New West and the Metro Vancouver region For the Brewery District, it's another charming Women-owned business that adds vibrancy and a safe, inclusive space to the community.

Motion & Music's mission is to provide student-centric arts programs that enrich their students' lives and spark their creativity through the performing arts. With a personalized approach, balanced scheduling, and a wide range of classes with ample opportunities, they believe everyone can learn to dance, play and perform. The range of activities was on full display this last year with over eight community performances at local theatres, ending with a full-scale musical theatre production of the beloved classic The Wizard of Oz.

"Helping you or your child discover the joy of the performing arts is our main goal," says Jessica Hanson, the academy's owner and director "Our fantastic team of teachers help drive this joy by designing classes that are not only fun but challenge students to be more technical artists. They do a great job of getting to know our students and families and become familiar with their educational needs and goals."

While Motion & Music is best known for its awardwinning youth programs, it also offers a diverse range of adult programs. Nearly every weekday evening, you can find recreational adult dance classes in styles ranging from hip-hop and jazz to ballet and contemporary. They also offer a beginner adult choir and private music lessons at their downtown studio. For those looking for more fitness-based programs, Motion & Music also offers Dance Fit, an energetic, uplifting workout class, and is introducing yoga back to the Sapperton neighbourhood this Fall

Yoga sessions and Dance Fit will be offered in the morning for those early risers, who like to get moving before the work day starts Make sure to take advantage of their promotional yoga classes offered at an introductory discount this September "We're excited to be expanding our adult program It's been wonderful seeing adults having fun in these classes and I love that we can provide opportunities for all ages to still perform at great venues like the Massey and Anvil Theatres," said Jessica.

When asked what sets Motion and Music apart from other studios, Jessica said, "Motion and Music's focus is finding joy and community in the arts We do this while aiming to provide families with an honest arts experience, meaning open lines of communication with our staff and directors, transparent policies and pricing, and no hidden annual membership fees (e.g. registration fee, administration fee) or expensive yearend recital ticket fees."

Your Internet Should Feel Good - Ours Does!

Looking for fast, reliable service that feels a little more… human? Meet Novus - your local provider of high-speed internet, TV, and home phone services, all powered by our very own fibre optic network. No middlemen. No surprises. Just quality connections from a company putting people first.

You’ve probably heard it by now - Novus calls itself The Feel-Good Network But what does that really mean?

For starters, it means faster support, and a team genuinely understanding what matters to the people who live here We’re not a faceless giant with a call centre halfway across the country We’re your neighbours! Our staff live and work right here in the Lower Mainland That means when you reach out, you’re talking to someone who knows your area, your building, and maybe even your favourite coffee shop.

“Even beyond our blazing-fast speeds, there’s something different about Novus. Maybe it’s the friendly faces at local events, or the way we remember your name. Maybe it’s just that everything feels a bit more personal - because it is.”

And yes, we are proudly local Founded in Vancouver back in 1996, and we’ve stayed true to our BC roots ever since. That’s nearly 30 years of building reliable connections, showing up for our communities, and doing things the West Coast way. Today, Novus is in over 1,000 buildings across Metro Vancouver, and we’re still expanding. Unlike other providers, we don’t ride on anyone else’s infrastructure - we build our own fibre optic network from the ground up. That means faster speeds, more reliability, and better service.

That local love? It shows up in everything we do. From sponsoring community events like Riverside Street Vibe and the local farmers markets, to spotlighting BC creators and makers in our “12 Days of Giveaways” during the holiday season - our version of feel-good means showing up, giving back, and celebrating the people who make our neighbourhoods thrive

We love being part of the community Whether we’re sponsoring the Vancouver Sun Run, joining the fun at Canada Day celebrations, or dancing alongside you at a local festival - we’re not just writing the cheque, we’re there in the crowd Supporting local doesn’t stop at our business model - it’s baked into who we are

And our customers seriously feel the difference. Some have been with us for over 25 years and say our service has been flawless the whole way through. One even said they'd give us 10 stars if they could - how’s that for a feel-good moment? Another shared we’re the first internet provider they’ve ever left a positive review for. Whether it’s a technician who takes extra care during setup or a customer support team that’s helpful and human, we’re proud of the moments that leave people smiling.

Even beyond our blazing-fast speeds, there’s something different about Novus Maybe it’s the friendly faces at local events, or the way we remember your name Maybe it’s just that everything feels a bit more personal - because it is

And when you need some help? We’re on it Fast No long holds, no endless transfers, just real help from real people

So if you’re looking for internet that’s fast, friendly, and rooted right here in your community - make the switch to Novus.

It’s not just internet. It’s the feel-good network.

My name is Carmen and I am the owner here at Empanadagal, we make a variety of Guatemalan and Latin American dishes. Working in the food industry is really the only thing I could imagine myself doing and love that so many people have gotten to try our products and enjoyed them There's no better feeling than having someone compliment my cooking!

Ever since I was a little girl I was around food, in Guatemala food is a huge part of the culture and most holidays revolve around a special dish like sweet empanadas for Easter, fiambre for the day of the saints and tamales for Christmas Some of my fondest memories as a child were going to the market and getting to try all of the delicious dishes the vendors were selling. As I grew up, I developed my cooking skills and got into the world of catering and pastry baking working with a series of businesses throughout the city, my star cakes were the tres leches and torta chilena (google them if you're curious) they're delicious!

In 2004 things had changed for the worse in Guatemala. I decided to immigrate to Canada with my 3 sons because I wanted a better future for them. When I arrived in Canada, I was lucky to start working with other great businesses around the province to keep doing what I loved There were a lot of difficult times being a single mom of 3 in a new country, but we always found a way through them Then, in 2020, everything changed With the pandemic and all the uncertainty around the world, I had found myself in a tough spot with a lot of free time on my hands

With the help of family and friends I started sharing my food online and slowly but steadily started growing a group of empanada lovers that supported us, the orders kept growing week over week. With a lot of dedication and hard work, we moved to a small space in the corner of a shared kitchen and made it official! Since then, we have moved to a commercial kitchen in New West where we now prepare all our products for the farmers markets that we participate in throughout the lower mainland

We are hoping to expand to stores in the coming year so more people can try our delicious empanadas, tamales, pupusas and the variety of vegan and glutenfriendly products that we sell

Hope you can stop by one day soon to say hello at the market, just look for the Empanadagal banner!

“My goal was to combine the deep artistic inspiration from my hometown with the freedom and beauty I’ve found in Canada. My designs are a mix of cultural expression and modern creativity - a celebration of both my roots and my new home.”

Hi! My name is Elham, but I often go by Emma here in Canada. I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Isfahan, Iran - known as the cultural and artistic capital of the country. I moved to Canada three and a half years ago and completed my Master’s in Business here.

Art has always been a big part of my life. I grew up surrounded by music, painting, and creativity. Even as a teenager, I loved making jewelry by taking apart my own pieces and creating something new and unique. My friends and family would often ask me to design custom pieces for them, and that’s when I realized how much joy I found in creating This passion eventually led me to start my own small business as a second career

A year and a half ago, I officially launched Emma Handmade Jewelry here in Canada My goal was to combine the deep artistic inspiration from my hometown with the freedom and beauty I’ve found in Canada My designs are a mix of cultural expression and modern creativity - a celebration of both my roots and my new home.

Coming from Iran, I know how precious freedom is, especially for women. Art is my way of expressing

I use high-quality materials like Miyuki beads from Japan, and I design each piece with care and love I also offer custom designs based on my customers’ ideas I regularly take part in local artisan markets and festivals - I’m a proud member of New West Craft and often have a booth once or twice a month at River Market I've also participated in larger community events like Hyack Festival, Car Free Day, and Recovery Day.

People can order from me through Instagram or by emailing me directly, and of course, they’re always welcome to visit me in person at my local market booths in New Westminster. Everything I create is made with love, and each piece tells a little story.

Meet our Feature Pet

Meet Trevor the Mini Labradoodle, a cheerful, tail-wagging force of cuteness with the fluff of a teddy bear and the soul of Mr. Rogers.

Since moving to New Westminster in spring 2023 with his Pawrents, Trevor has come a beloved neighbourhood icon Known for his warm energy, fashionable flair and impaweccable vibes, Trev brings joy and his gentle charm to the sidewalk, elevator, and every spot we sniff along the way

Trev's day-to-day adventures are shared with his devoted copawrent and walking buddy Erin. Their story began when a Facebook post looking for a dog walker aligned perfectly with her recovery from surgery. What started out as a practical arrangement quickly blossomed into something profound: a daily rhythm of healing walks, spontaneous joy, cuddles, and a unique bond grounded in unconditional presence.

Trev is a gentle force of connection in his community, there is no rush in his stride, only the steady paws of a being that knows each moment, each sniff, and each encounter holds value Whether its a toddler in a stroller, a senior on their morning walk, a bus driver taking a break or a barista stepping outside for fresh air - Trevor greets and meets people (and dogs) at their energy level You get the feeling he knows who might need a little extra kindness in their day

Local New Westies may recognize Trevor as the "Pace Pup" at Steel & Oak's weekly Wednesday run club, where he cheers runners on with tail wags and post-run nose boops. Trev won 1st prize in last year's Bosley's Halloween Costume Contest, dressed as a bucket of KFC, a handmade costume that accentuated Trevor's fried-chicken-like curliness. This past February, Trevor and Erin handed out over 100 "Trevintines", which were unique Valentines that we delivered to local businesses and dog lovers around New West One standout design paid tribute to the iconic Tin Solider at the River Market, and features Trevor and the Tin Solider surrounded by Golden hearts, and the message, "Your Heart is made of Gold"

Trevor is a sweet reminder that healing, friendship and joy can start with a simple walk and a wag.
