LIVING IN EAST MEADOW 5 2022-2023 - www.liherald.com

The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. East Meadow, however, remains strong. It is a hamlet full of fighters. And as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and reenergized.Throughout the crisis, the East Meadow Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a hamlet that may have struggled at times, but one that also is winning.

Now that we have emerged from the pandemic with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal, we are ready to charge ahead with optimism and renewed vigor.

In this edition of our annual Living In East Meadow, we look at all that is wonderful about this lively village. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official publication.Wehope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the East Meadow Herald 52 weeks a year. Be well and be safe.

The past two years were tough for East Meadow, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did after Hurricane Sandy's wake in 2012. Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what East Meadow is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses marketing grants so that the merchants — the lifeblood of the community — could carry on.

We are in our 68th year, and we continue to grow. We work together to improve our whole community, located in the Meadow east of the Meadowbrook Parkway, consisting of the hamlets of East Meadow and Salisbury. We help develop and maintain relationships and act as a liaison between local businesses, various levels of government and neighboring chambers.

In short, the East Meadow Chamber strives to help businesses grow, and to create a business-friendly environment that ensures our community will be a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family, as many of our members do all of these.

The East Meadow Chamber puts up snowflakes during holiday time, and American Flags starting Memorial Day through Labor Day down East Meadow Avenue. Each year we also give out four scholarships to graduating seniors from East Meadow High School and W.T. Clarke, and have helped with football cards, and both the fall and spring sports brochures.

Courtesy East Meadow Chamber of Commerce

The East Meadow Chamber holds regular monthly meetings — primarily on the first Wednesday of the month — which allows our members great networking opportunities. We also host networking events, Shop Local programs, participate in an annual Memorial Day Parade, Trunk and Treat, and our East Meadow Pride Day.

Richie Krug Jr., president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, joins many of the organization's past presidents during a recent gathering.

Richie Krug Jr. President, East Meadow Chamber of Commerce

Dear East Meadow residents,TheEast Meadow Chamber of Commerce and all our members are proud to be part of this East Meadow guide and part of the community. The chamber is made up of more than 230 businesses, organizations and civic members that help, service and promote East Meadow.

LIVING IN EAST MEADOW 6 2022-2023 - www.liherald.com

The East Meadow Chamber , with the help of state and local officials, created the East Meadow Town Square at TOH Veterans Memorial Park, which has become a gathering place for residents to enjoy, as well as a venue for local events, such as our very own annual Easter Egg Hunt and Holiday Lighting Ceremony. This year we will be having our first Fall Festival Sept. 15 to Sept. 18 at Eisenhower Park.

Enclosed in this guide is a list of all members. They ask for your support. Our success allows us to give back to the community to sponsor Little Leagues and many other worthy organizations. If you would like more information, please call the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce office at (516) 794-3727, or visit us at EastMeadowChamber.com.

ver since Stew Leonard’s opened in East Meadow on Front Street in 2017, the popular market has demonstrated to the community its commitment to the neighborhood. From donating turkeys during Thanksgiving, to hosting food drives in its parking lot in partnership with PSEG Long Island, to helping out Todd Weinstein and the community during their many charitable efforts through the “Nice things that happen in East Meadow” Facebook page, Stew Leonard’s dedication is always at the“Stewforefront.Leonard’s is a great neighbor,” Weinstein said. “Any time our page has needed anything, they’ve always responded.” The grocery store has partnered with the group numerous times by donating free ice cream tokens for those who donate. It took it one step further this past year when Weinstein announced he was doing a canned food drive for his 50th birthday, and wanted to collect 1,972 cans of food in honor of the year he was born. When Stew Leonard Jr. — president of Stew Leonard’s — found out, he upped the donation: 50

In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is noon the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, and should be emailed to the editor at the address below, at right. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions.Wevalue your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. The Herald also offers tours of its Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. East Meadow's Melinda Geraghty, told the Herald last year bringing her children to the newly opened library was exciting. Before the 1886 Front St., location closed, she would bring her 5-year-old daughter Amelia there often. Her son Ryan — who was 2 when the library reopened — had never been there.

“All of the employees are so welcoming," Geraghty said. "They really missed the kids. My son squealed when he ran into the children’s area and the librarian said she was so thrilled to hear that sound again.”

“Founder’s Day has long been one of East Meadow’s favorite PTA events,” Veronica Nicastro, past PTA Council president, said. “It is always a joy to honor those individuals who go above and beyond for our community’s children. This year in particular it being the first Founder’s Day in a few years, it feels especially special I’m sure.”

The East Meadow Council of PTAs advocates for all children in the school district, carrying on the mantra of the national PTA of “every child, one voice.”

he goal of the parent teacher association is to enhance the relationship between families and the school community. And while it’s not easy to bring together nine separate schools, the East Meadow PTAs never cease to take their job seriously.

The individual school PTAs assist in building a positive relationship between home and campusAsidelife.from planning fundraisers to help schools raise money, celebrating staff members with special days dedicated to them, and addressing any issues within the schools, one major PTA event every year is Founder’s Day.Founder’s Day is exactly that: It commemorates the founding of the PTA, recognizing those who make the PTA and its activities possible. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the beloved event was on hiatus the last couple years. So for 2022, everyone caught up to honor the Founder’s Day honorees that had yet to be recognized.

Each Founder's Day has a theme that helps solidify the district’s goals. For 2020, it was “soaring to new heights.” For the 2021 and Bringing schools together, one street at a time — the PTA way

ast Meadow’s town square sits on the corner of Prospect and East Meadow avenues in Veterans Memorial Park. It may seem like it’s been there forever, but the town square is actually very much a product of the 21st century.Patrick Curry, who at the time was the president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, came up with the idea to create a town square in 1996. It would be a successor, James Skinner Sr., who would realize the town square five years later, even adding his own touch to the popular gathering place — personalized bricks.

The idea for the bricks came to Skinner when he was looking for a way to raise money to make the town square project actually happen. At the time, there were state grants, but the project overall was still running short on funds.

“They created the square 20 years ago, and they had the foresight to lay down the

With approval from the Town of Hempstead — and help from the chamber — the beloved event has become an annual tradition ever since.

foundation for us to be able to continue the brick program in the future,” said Richie Krug Jr., the current president of the East Meadow Chamber. “We wouldn’t be able to do this right now without that.” Skinner, who grew up in East Meadow, said Veterans Memorial Park was always where everyone congregates to use the pools and tennis and basketball courts. “We declared that East Meadow Avenue was our main street,” he said. “What better place to put your town square than on your mainJamesstreet.”Skinner Jr., the chamber's vice president, has continued his father's project — following the path paved before him. “It’s great for the community,” the younger Skinner said. “My father did it, and here I am 20 years later continuing it.”

The cooperative extension prioritizes the sale of goods produced by locals all over Long Island. The farmers market is open every Saturday through the end of October in Eisenhower Park field 8. The market is a part of the cooperative extension's food systems and agriculture “pillar,” which is just one aspect of what the organization does overall.

idden behind Nassau University Medical Center is a spot dedicated just to veterans. Building Q, off of Carman Avenue, houses the Veterans Service Agency, the Veterans Affairs Clinic and a food pantry just for veterans.

Even though it’s a food pantry, it has everything a person or family could need.

“We have food, we have diapers, we have toothpaste and toothbrushes, razors and shaving cream,” Esposito said. “I have anything you can think of, within reason.”

LIVING IN EAST MEADOW 28 2022-2023 - www.liherald.com

To get the ball rolling some years ago, Esposito reached out to two food banks — Island Harvest and Long Island Cares — as well as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts to spread the word and arrange for food supplies. The pantry is open Monday through Friday.

The Veterans Food Pantry — or “Vet Mart” — has been open since 2015, said Ralph Esposito, the director of the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency. “I did this because there was a need for veterans,” Esposito said. “They go into the local pantries, but I said, ‘You know what? I have the room. Why don’t I just make a pantry here?’”The VA Clinic, in conjunction with the service agency, provides primary and specialty health care for veterans, which includes mental health services. The pantry is run solely by volunteers, Esposito said.

The Vet Mart feeds about 600 people a month, which includes veterans and their families. Volunteers also deliver food to those who can’t make it there.

Veterans are allowed to come by for food once a week. Only staff members go into the pantry itself, so a menu is given to the veterans to fill out whatever they need and how much they need depending on if they’re only feeding themselves or a family.

The sanctuary, adjacent to Senator Speno Memorial Park, was transformed in 1997, the result of a partnership between the county and the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations. The history of the site is a long and interesting one. The land started out being used by a sand and gravel company owned by Joseph Goldblatt in 1927. After the first year, the company struck water. As the operations of the sand mine dwindled and neighborhood children started using it as a beach, the Town of Hempstead purchased the site in 1963, turning a portion of it into Speno Park. The rest of the land was taken by Nassau County for water drainage.“Thecleanups have helped tremendously over the years,” Parisi said on Earth Day 2022. “I’ve noticed that the area has been rejuvenated, and so much natural vegetation grows.”
