In 1655, two surveyors for the Town of Hempstead reported that the "east meadow" would be suitable for grazing. The area quickly became a grazing area for cattle, and later, in the 18th century, for sheep.

EAST MEADOW

In 1917, Joseph J. Lannin, the owner of the Garden City Hotel, built the Salisbury Golf Club, which was used primarily by hotel patrons.

In 1814, the East Meadow School District was formed under the name “Bushy" or "Brushy Plains.”

In 1927, Charles A.

Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight flew over East Meadow

because of its proximity to Mitchel Air Force Base and Roosevelt Field. In 1935, Meadowbrook Hospital, now Nassau

University Medical

Center, admitted its first patient.

In 1954, members of the school district voted to establish a public library, now known at the East Meadow Public Library.

From 1888 to 1893,

future First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt

lived in East Meadow. In 1930, the Nassau County Board of Supervisors established the East

Meadow Fire District.

In 1972, the movie, ‘The Hot Rock,’ had some scenes filmed in the Nassau County Jail on Carman Avenue, with shots of East Meadow High School in the background.
