spoke of our shared humanity at a time of collective tragedy. In Nassau County alone, over 2,000 lives — each a parent, child, spouse or sibling — were lost to the coronavirus, and we send our deepest sympathies to all of their loved ones. Although we began the Heroes series focusing primarily on health care workers, we expanded it over time to include teachers and principals, custodians and business owners, and many, many people who formed ad hoc organizations and small nonprofits to address the needs of their neighbors during the pandemic. We wound down the series at the end of November, publishing our final set of 16 Heroes in our Thanksgiving Day issue, a fitting way to end the collection. We are so thankful to so many people who have kept our society and our economy moving during this crisis. Also highlighted on these pages are the outstanding healthcare leaders whose inspiring leadership guided

us all through this challenging time. Additionally, we thank our sponsors, Mount Sinai South Nassau and Melissa A. Matassa, Agency Owner of GEICO – Lynbrook, for their generous support. As of this writing, two Covid-19 vaccines have received emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and millions of doses are being distributed across the country. Just last week, Congress passed a new round of relief funding. Let us hope that these milestones signal the beginning of the end of the pandemic. This yearbook, which commemorates in a single publication all of the 400-plus Herald Hometown Heroes, reminds us that amidst uncertainty and tragedy, our neighbors rise to the occasion. That amidst grief and despair can be hope and compassion. The worst of times often bring out the best in everyday people. Our Hometown Heroes lived up to their callings and made our lives safer and healthier; for that, we will forever be grateful.

A SPECIAL NOTE OF ACKNOWLEDGMENT In appreciation of your efforts

With gratitude

The care and compassion you constantly show lifts our spirits, and has brought us a ray of hope during some of the darkest times. You’ve sacrificed a great deal in your own lives to help make ours better. Know that we stand alongside you in solidarity, and we’re forever indebted to you for your tremendous sense of selflessness. Thank you for all you do to keep the heart of Long Island beating. Brighter days are ahead, and we look forward to celebrating them together with you.

Whether caring for those who are sick or infirm, transporting those who are ill, supplying meals and other vital services for those doing so, giving their own resources to aid front-liners in these efforts or finding ways to celebrate and thank their efforts, the community spirit demonstrated during these dark days has been nothing short of remarkable. The perseverance, creativity and compassion demonstrated by this outstanding group inspire us all to forge ahead with greater confidence to address, and meet, the community needs that are before us, with vigilance, compassion and a true desire to serve the greater good.

he GEICO Lynbrook office would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our first responders, medical professionals, essential workers and all our hometown heroes leading us through the Covid-19 pandemic. You are the backbone of Long Island, and your commitment to supporting our local communities truly inspires all of us.

ount Sinai South Nassau is pleased to sponsor the Herald’s Hometown Heroes, honoring individuals on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic, who ensure the safety, health and security of us all during this challenging time. We commend these selfless individuals for the work they’ve done and continue to do as we all bear down for the current wave.

n mid-May, as the coronavirus pandemic raged across the country and especially in downstate New York, the Herald’s editorial team undertook what became a monumental project: to feature, each week, the front-line heroes who were — and are — keeping us safe and providing for our daily sustenance. These “Hometown Heroes” are doctors, nurses, EMTs, firefighters, supermarket employees, sanitation workers, and more. Every week the Herald provided a voice to 16 Hometown Heroes, in each of our 18 editions. By the time the series concluded in November, more than 400 Hometown Heroes — our neighbors — had told their harrowing and sometimes horrifying experiences on the pages of the Herald in their very own words. Our Heroes’ first-person narratives often told of death and job loss, mourning and fear. At the same time, these Heroes demonstrated resilience in the face of unbearable hardship, and kindness to desperate strangers. They

My hometown hero is Peggie Como. She has been a long-time member of the Mutual Concerns Committee, and eight years ago she became president of this great organization that really takes care of anyone who needs help! Peggie not only has a full-time job as an office manager at Sherlock Homes Realty, but also runs Mutual Concerns on a daily basis. She juggles agents, customers and folks that are having some hard times. The organization also sponsors the twice weekly senior lunch and social program. She makes sure the chef has a delicious, healthy lunch and lunches “to go”. She also makes sure that there is a fun-filled afternoon for the seniors presided over by Jane McGilloway and Elizabeth Mitchell. At holiday times, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, you will find her in the pantry at Village Hall packing up boxes of food for be delivered to people in need. Peggie will be the first to solve a problem and if she can’t, she will find someone who can. She epitomizes the true meaning of “empathy”. Anyone who knows her always falls in love with her kindness and hard work . Thank you, Peggie Como from the bottom of my heart.

2020 HEROES: Leaders in Healthcare

Marc Adler, MD

Chief Medical Officer

NYU Langone Hospital — Long Island Mineola

What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? Uncertainty was a common theme throughout this year, with the virus early on presenting more questions than answers. Healthcare typically involves treatments based on experience and results. Without a moderntimes pandemic playbook, we had to rely on the skills, knowledge, and foresight of every single person in our organization to stay one step ahead in optimizing patient care. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? U.S hospitals typically run at about 75 percent capacity, but here locally it’s not unheard of to be well over 90 percent full. When Covid hit, we needed to not only create treatment space beyond our usual high capacity but also recruit the necessary staff to take care of very sick patients. We created fully-equipped care areas staffed with specialty-trained personnel almost overnight, leaving virtually nothing to chance. We had to rely on each other as a team to quickly come up with safe solutions by rolling up our sleeves and working in well-coordinated teams. There’s no room for egos during a pandemic. Who or what has inspired you this year? Unquestionably, my healthcare colleagues stepped up in ways that amazed me every day. Dedicated frontline staff came to work day after day, night after night, unsure of their own susceptibility to a life-threatening virus. There are many unsung heroes in our daily lives — not just healthcare workers but so many in our communities who support us by providing services we’ve needed to get through this. I thank them for supporting us each day. Just 10 months ago, we were among the first hospitals hit with an unprecedented medical pandemic, and now we have an extremely effective vaccine against that very virus. Together with wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and good hand hygiene, vaccination will be a game-changer in managing this pandemic.

Manhasset Looking ahead, Covid-19 will forever change health care as we know it. From patient experiences to wearing masks to the partnerships that have been so critical to fighting this virus, we have learned valuable lessons that can and should be used moving forward. Health care can take advantage of these lessons, like how we can now utilize telehealth as a more convenient option for those who are homebound, or even how cross-sector collaborations broke siloes and accelerated treatments and getting over many other obstacles. We need to learn from this. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? Our number one challenge became very clear almost immediately as this pandemic began. We had to both take care of our patients and at the same time take care of our essential health care personnel. Every person was asked to put themselves at some risk in order to care for the patients. Our doctors, nurses, custodial workers, dieticians, and every single essential person involved in the care of our patients. At virtually no other time were we faced with such a challenge to not only our patients but our essential health care workers. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Our greatest accomplishment was the support of our front line workers. We accomplished this by providing adequate PPE (personal protective equipment) and utilizing our entire healthcare network to effectively move patients from facilities in danger of being overwhelmed and therefore potentially compromising the care of patients. Who or what has inspired you this year? I was most inspired by the courage displayed by our frontline heroes from every component of the health care workforce. Although initially both understandably and appropriately fearful, that fear morphed into incredible courage and produced heroes. It was also inspiring to see the level of community support and acknowledgement of our front line workers for their heroic stand against the pandemic and caring for everyone’s loved ones. The clap-outs at change of shift brought tears of appreciation and respect to everyone each and every day.

Anthony Boutin, MD, FACEP, FAAEM President & CEO, Chief Medical Officer

NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) East Meadow

The pandemic has changed health care delivery. It has put the focus on remote patient care with tools such as telehealth and digital communication. Telehealth allows our patients to remain safer in their homes. This approach to healthcare saves time, expense, and allows patients to have reliable access to quality care. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? This crisis has changed the way we work, live, communicate and even care for our patients. We have had to adjust in many ways. One of the challenges we faced was how to adapt extremely rapidly. For example, configuring patient floors and units to care for patients with Covid-19, making significant adjustments in the staff’s roles and schedules, and adjusting to the new PPE and hygiene protocols to prevent spread of the Covid-19 virus. As with most medical facilities nationwide, supply shortages were a challenge at the onset of the pandemic. A hurdle we quickly overcame. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Focusing on the task at hand. Keeping the faith and remaining optimistic. Who or what has inspired you this year? Our NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center staff has inspired me. I am extremely proud and grateful for all of our compassionate employees. These are difficult times for everyone. Throughout this health crisis the NuHealth staff have remained dedicated and demonstrated true heroism. Our clinical and support team members courageously show up to work each day, support each other, and are committed to providing the best care to our patients and their families. I would like to thank each of them for their continued service and dedication.

2020 HEROES: Leaders in Healthcare

Stacey Conklin

RN-BC, MHCDS, NE-BC

Chief Nursing Officer, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services

Mount Sinai South Nassau Oceanside

Nurses across the country and around the world have demonstrated great strength and resilience in managing through this pandemic. I have never been prouder to be a nurse. I am in awe as I watch nurses everywhere step up to care for the sickest of patients, especially the nurses at Mount Sinai South Nassau. This pandemic has helped demonstrate that along with being the most trusted profession, nurses are also a force to be reckoned with. While we are still uncertain what the new normal for health care will look like, one certainty we can count on is that nurses everywhere will meet the challenge head on. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? While we knew we had the determination to rise to the challenge, ensuring that we had the resources and balanced nurse staffing throughout the hospital was a huge challenge. Another challenge was keeping up with daily changes to our processes and procedures. We are now in the midst of the second wave and also must continue to provide testing to our staff and community members. Thankfully, we have also begun to administer the vaccine to our staff. While each of these are vital to helping us overcome this horrific disease, together they are extremely complex to manage and can change in a moment’s notice. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Getting through Wave 1 was indeed a great accomplishment for all. For me personally, the greatest accomplishment was the ability to work with an exceptional group of Nurse Leaders to ensure that we provided our patients with the expert care they needed while maintaining a safe environment for our staff. Together, we were able to meet the needs of the community — my community — and provide exceptional care and compassion to hundreds of patients under austere conditions. Who or what has inspired you this year? Our nurses and staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau have inspired me the most this year. Their dedication and commitment to serving our community has been unprecedented. There are no words to adequately convey my sincere appreciation to the nursing staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau. The outpouring of support from the community from the generous delivery of food, drinks, and groceries to the drive by parades organized by first responders, policemen, firemen, government officials and residents was equally inspiring and truly helped us recognize and thank the staff.

Barbara Gibbons

Chief Nursing Officer, Vice President for Patient Care Services

Catholic Health Services Mercy Medical Center

Rockville Centre Barbara Gibbons has been the Chief Nursing Officer at St. Joseph Hospital since 2012 and in 2018 was asked to assume a dual role as Chief Nursing Officer for Mercy Medical Center, both members of Catholic Health Services of Long Island. She is a professional registered nurse with over 40 years of health care experience in clinical, leadership and education roles. Before assuming her role as Chief Nursing Officer, Barbara served as Director of Education and was Assistant Clinical Professor of Nursing at SUNY Stony Brook and Suffolk Community College. Barbara has a strong belief in community service and was awarded the New York State Liberty Medal, New York’s highest civilian honor, for her work during Hurricane Katrina. Barbara received her Master’s in Nursing from Stony Brook University in 1990 and is also a Family Health Nurse Practitioner.

Corey Karlin-Zysman, MD Medical Director

Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Valley Stream

The pandemic will inevitably have a lasting impact on health care. It was an incredible test of resilience and a testament to that fact that there are a lot of caring, compassionate and selfless people in this world. That being said, it also took its toll and I worry about long-term scares. The pandemic also forced us to take a hard look at our current processes such as capacity management and efficiency. Priorities have changed. Now, there is also a greater appreciation of virtual solutions and healthcare innovation. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? The biggest challenge was fear; fear of an unknown entity, fear about getting sick, fear about the safety of our healthcare team. In the beginning, there was so little known about how to protect the team and how to treat the disease. It is hard to lead when you yourself are experiencing the same apprehensions. However, when people are looking to you for support and guidance, you need to do everything in your power to protect them and give them all the tools they need to successfully do their job despite all the challenges and unfamiliar terrain. I was humbled daily by the unfaltering commitment to the patients, our community and to each other. It motivated me to roll up my sleeves get past the fear. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? My greatest accomplishment is shared by the entire healthcare team and that was our ability to provide care to everyone who showed up at our doors. We took care of record numbers of extremely sick patients when everything from space, supplies, equipment, treatment, and staff were being stretched to their max and beyond. Who or what has inspired you this year? My biggest source of inspiration and encouragement is my husband, Warren. We lean heavily on each other for moral support. For both of us, work is all consuming but as a team, we still manage to figure out how to care for and protect our kids and provide support to our family and friends. This was tested even more when his 100-year-old grandfather passed away from Covid during the height of the first wave. Connection with others is so important to your mental and physical health and cannot be overstated especially when curve balls are being thrown your way.

Margaret Murphy, RN

Associate Executive Director, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer

Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Medical Center

New Hyde Park As we look forward to the post pandemic era, a new culture in health care will emerge. This pandemic has affected all in its path whether on the front lines or in the community. It has reminded all of us of just how vulnerable human life is and how valuable we are to each other. This was a time that echoed just how connected we are regardless of race or background; together we were stronger, one team fighting against an enemy and determined to emerge victorious. Strangers bonded with strangers and front line staff became the substitute family for their patients during what was the most fragile time and all too often it was during those moments when many took their last breath. As a result, health care workers are different. Many suffered personal loss while trying to alleviate the suffering of others. I do believe that a new realization has descended on all of us. It made us think about health care differently; illness never threatened us quite like this before but now it did. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? I would say the biggest challenge has been ensuring staff and patient safety while managing the volume and acuity of the patients as well as matching staff competencies to the care demands for each patient. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? I think the greatest accomplishment was always responding to the unexpected, creating a plan where we tried to stay a step ahead of the next wave and providing the necessary support and care to our caregivers. Who or what has inspired you this year? The most inspirational and influential people in dealing with this pandemic were the front line staff — the true heroes. Their resilience, courage, selflessness, compassion and their ability to come together to find workable creative solutions was truly inspirational and honored the human spirit of every patient.

Doreen O’Grady, RN

Terry Pando, RN

Associate Executive Director, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer

Associate Executive Director, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer

Glen Cove For more than 33 years, Doreen O’Grady, RN, has served in various roles at Northwell Health. In her current position as chief nurse officer at Glen Cove Hospital, she is responsible for the quality of nursing care and delivery. The majority of her career was spent in the Emergency Department at Glen Cove in various leadership positions. In 2012, she was promoted to chief nursing officer at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills. As a participant of Northwell’s High Potential Development Program, she completed the Cornell-HANYS Academy for Healthcare Leadership Advancement Program. Dr. O’Grady is certified as an emergency nurse and nurse executive. Dr. O’Grady received Northwell’s Nursing Leadership Award for the improvement of patient care and the advancement of professional nursing practice. In addition, she was a nominee for the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council Nurse of Excellence award. She has presented her work on the patient experience at two national Press Ganey Conferences, and has been published in The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing. She is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Emergency Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. Dr. O’Grady has a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Case Western Reserve University, an MBA from Dowling College, a BSN from Adelphi University and an associate degree in nursing from Nassau Community College.

Valley Stream Covid-19 presented unprecedented challenges we had to face and adjust to quickly. I see three areas with the greatest impact: Gratitude: The gratitude shown to frontline healthcare heroes and essential workers was impressive and rewarding. Although nurses have always been valued and recognized, the strong recognition they received was heartwarming. Innovation: Northwell Health was the leader in Covid 19 responsiveness and leadership. Under Michael Dowling, we came together as a system and provided the necessary leadership in the clinical arena while Governor Cuomo led us through the logistics and operations. Innovation was rapid and will continue. True collaboration: We worked together closer than ever within and across teams and disciplines. Titles were left at the door. Sharing resources, lessons learned and improved communication occurred within Northwell and between other health care systems. I believe this will continue as a legacy of the pandemic.

Northwell Health Glen Cove Hospital

Northwell Health Long Island Jewish

What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? Long Island Jewish Valley Stream found itself at the epicenter of the pandemic in its service to patients from our surrounding communities. The staff responded with passion and dedication. Feelings of chaos, fatigue, compassion, commitment, teamwork and intense collaboration were experienced as our team fought this challenging opponent. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Staying connected to our staff on all shifts was the goal of our senior leadership team. We were able to achieve that by staggering hours and being available to deliver pizza, run an errand and provide whatever support was needed in difficult times. Who or what has inspired you this year? The staff of Long Island Jewish Valley Stream inspired me every day. Their selfless acts of compassion, dedication and teamwork gave me the strength to continue. I am so proud and thankful for all they do every day and for the sacrifices they continue to make, always dedicated to our community and each other.

Janice M. Pateres, MS, MBA, RN, BC Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer

NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC)

East Meadow What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? Keeping the staff motivated and energized. We have been running a sprint for the duration of a marathon and they are exhausted. However, they keep going. To constantly ask for more when they have given so much already is so hard, but there is still much work to be done. We have a purpose, a mission. Our patients and our communities need us now more than ever. We cannot falter, we cannot give up. During the height of the pandemic, nursing leadership needed to be on the front lines with our nursing staff. We all went back into scrubs so we could put on PPE and step in when needed. We continued to support and encourage our nursing team, to keep providing the best care during the most trying times we have ever imagined. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Setting the expectation for re-training and re-deploying staff to establish teamwork that the entire organization embodied during this crisis. Staff worked in areas they had not worked in years or had never worked. Areas in the hospital that had lower patient volumes now had to assist areas that had much greater patient volume. People began volunteering to help out in any way they could, taking on roles that were nowhere even close to their job description. Who or what has inspired you this year? The entire nursing and clinical team. Hearing what seemed like non-stop overhead announcements for patient rescues and witnessing staff running to save lives. Every time. No one took a break, no one gave up. That is what inspired me the most. When it seemed like they had every right to surrender against insurmountable odds, they did not. Unfortunately, the odds were against too many, but hope was always there, and it still is.

Kerri Ann Scanlon, RN, FAAN Executive Director

Northwell Health Glen Cove Hospital Glen Cove

The greatest impact has probably been the recognition by the public and the industry of the importance of the frontline teams: the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation therapists, environmental services, engineering, food and nutrition — that come together to provide exquisite care for our patients. Much in the same way that we have always seen our first responders as heroes, the public has come to recognize the heroism of the frontline staff. Perhaps one of the greatest lessons learned is that we cannot take health and wellness for granted. This pandemic has shown us that there is always potential for a new virus and/or ailment to crop up at any time and we must be prepared. Glen Cove Hospital, as part of the Northwell Health System is fortunate to benefit from great leadership and forethought. Michael Dowling, CEO of Northwell Health, recognized the importance of planning and the health system has been preparing for such an emergency for decades. The key to managing any major emergency is to develop a strong infrastructure and a process. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? This second wave of the virus is one of the biggest challenges. During the first wave, we were fortunate to have benefitted from the assistance of traveling providers (physicians, nurses, etc.). Now the virus has taken hold nationwide and New York hospitals need to rely upon internal staff. We are incredibly fortunate to have a pool of flex staff who are always ready to jump in. It is also imperative to keep our teams healthy and we are so grateful a vaccine is being made available to our frontline. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? I am so proud of the entire Glen Cove Hospital team for our ability to care for the community while still investing in the future of Glen Cove Hospital. We continue to grow our programs and services. Who or what has inspired you this year? I am blessed to work with an incredible team who inspire me to do and be better everyday. I am also deeply inspired by Michael Dowling. He has led the way through this pandemic on a state and national level and has been on the ground with the staff on a daily basis. Through his example we are all inspired to respond to this unprecedented pandemic with compassion and coordination. We are stronger together.

We in health care have been called “health care heroes.” Most of us don’t see ourselves that way — we do see ourselves as dedicated, caring, skilled, and hard-working professionals. People need to know the facts — and I hope that this firsthand account dispels any doubt anyone may have as to the severity of this pandemic, which is unprecedented in our time. This virus has imposed challenges on humanity that most of us never imagined. It’s up to us to collectively acknowledge that humanity in order to move forward with the healing. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? Long Island Jewish Medical Center was at the epicenter of the Covid-19 surge in the spring, and we are seeing a slow but steady resurgence now. Our team has rallied and come together with truly inspiring skill and dedication, successfully treating thousands of patients. That said, our greatest challenge has been to those same team members, who have been stretched and stressed in this ongoing pandemic, risking their own health — physical and emotional — as they care for very ill patients and their families, who are often unable to be together as we all would wish. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Covid-19 is a formidable adversary, not to be taken lightly. I am proud to say that the LIJ and Northwell teams have been providing the best possible response to this scourge, while continuing to provide care for all the other health issues that haven’t disappeared. Who or what has inspired you this year? While we have begun vaccinating our staff, I ask for the community’s continued support for them — which still includes the unpleasant but effective measures of masking, social distancing, and frequent hand-washing— so that fewer people find themselves in danger.

Despite all the challenges and the devastating loss of life, the healthcare industry has, by necessity, learned to be more flexible (virtual visits, telehealth adoption), more collaborative, and more resilient. What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? The loss of life in our community and the risk of harm to the staff were the most challenging and emotionally taxing. Operating in crisis mode throughout the duration of the Covid-19 patient surge was exhausting to our entire staff, especially those on the front line. What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? During this global crisis, our organization pulled together and demonstrated our resolve to serve our community and each other — the level of teamwork and collaboration achieved during this crisis was unprecedented. Who or what has inspired you this year? Our frontline staff has stepped up repeatedly all year, often putting themselves in harm’s way, to meet the needs of our patients. Every single staff member at Mount Sinai South Nassau has inspired me with their selfless dedication to help their fellow neighbor.

What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? Our frontline team has dealt with myriad challenges in the face of Covid-19. Most daunting has been confronting so many unknowns of this virus with courage, skill, expertise, compassion — and unrelenting energy each and every day. Many staff had to stand in for the families of severely ill and dying patients, helping to connect them through virtual communications, often using their own personal phones.

Maureen White, RN

Executive Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive, Director Northwell Institute for Nursing

Northwell Health North Shore University Hospital Manhasset

It has been said that in every storm there is silver lining. This statement holds true for the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has forced us to entire the digital world at a faster pace and more broadly that we had planned. The new digital world of healthcare will give us the capability to offer our patients a variety of ways to access the healthcare system that best suits their needs and preferences. It also offers the health system the opportunity to better meet the growing demand of patients that are seeking care.

What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Focusing on managing my own emotions and being able to guide and support the staff during the most difficult of times. It was crucial to maintain an atmosphere that was calm and organized and that was always at the ready to accommodate the ever-evolving and changing needs of our patients. Communication and planning 24/7 was key to coordinating and providing the high level of care required to manage this challenging virus. Most of all, I’m so incredibly proud to be part of an amazing organization and a member of one of the most well-respected and trusted of professions. I am proud to be a professional registered nurse!

What has been the biggest challenge you (and your institution) have faced in dealing with this crisis? The biggest crisis that we had to face was the volume of patients that came in and the speed with which they presented to the facilities.

Who or what has inspired you this year? My inspiration throughout this unprecedented year has been the compassion, dedication, and selflessness of the NYU Langone Health — Long Island nurses and our entire healthcare team. The outpouring of support by the community has also served to provide immeasurable hope and encouragement that was — and is — still so welcomed and valued by our organization.

Who or what has inspired you this year? Without question, the courage, fortitude, and commitment of the entire frontline team has inspired me the most this past year. What touched me the most was that despite the uncertainty of this virus and the fast pace in which patients were presenting, the nurses never lost their caring and compassion which is a hallmark of nursing practice.

What would you describe as your greatest accomplishment during this time? Anything that I may have accomplished pales in the face of what the frontline teams achieved. But, if I had to highlight one thing that I did to assist the healthcare team it would be preemptively identifying hundreds of registered nurses, both internal and external to the health system, to enhance staffing.

The Herald collaborated with local businesses to deliver meals, treats and gifts to essential workers, following publication of the “Salute to Hometown Heroes” special section, published last spring, at the start of the pandemic. This endeavor was made possible by the strong advertising support of the Heroes special section. From the revenues generated from the participating advertisers, the Herald was able to partner with many businesses in our communities to benefit these vital workers so selflessly giving of themselves to help others. These donations, welcomed by so many during a difficult time, included: Ambiance Salon and Colour Bar Hair donated haircut gift cards to Mount Sinai South Nassau Anton’s Car Care Center donated gas cards to the Rockville Centre Police Department Bagel Boss Café donated a bagel spread to Lynbrook Restorative Therapy & Nursing and lunch to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Dolce Confections donated chocolate treats to Beach Terrace Care Center and Maple Pointe Assisted Living Emile’s Candies donated sweet treats to Mercy Medical Center Gemelli Gourmet Market North donated sandwiches and snacks to the Glen Cove Police Department and snacks to Glen Cove Hospital Grace’s Marketplace donated lunch to The Regency Assisted Living Hand and Stone Massage donated gift cards for a massage to the Valley Stream Fire Department Iavarone Brothers donated a lunch spread to Oceanside Care Center and Gala Foods Supermarket
