CHASE VACNIN’S CHARACTER works side by side with Michael Gandolfini’s in the new trailer for “The Many Saints of Newark.”

If you’ve been to the movies lately, you might have caught the new trailer for the “Sopranos” spin-off, “The Many Saints of Newark,” which features an appearance by a young actor from Merrick. Chase Vacnin has been slowly working his way up the Hollywood ladder, and is about to make his big-screen debut. It was an exciting and “surreal” moment when he first saw the preview, he said — it took three trips to the theater to catch it

with friends, who gave him celebratory praise. And for the 19-year-old Vacnin, it’s only just the beginning, he hopes. “I’m a little greedy,” he said with a laugh. “I want more, and now I know I’m capable. I just have to keep working harder and keep getting better.” Vacnin appears twice in the trailer: once, playing a character antagonizing the lead, Michael Gandolfini — the son of the late “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, who plays Tony Soprano — and again Continued on page 4

Area libraries adapt to Covid crisis, discuss current policies By JoRDAN VAlloNE jvallone@liherald.com

“All of the libraries have really worked together through this pandemic,” said Elaine Cummings-Young, director of the Bellmore Memorial Library. “Safety is still our biggest concern.” The Bellmore-Merrick area boasts four libraries — Bellmore Memorial, the North Bellmore Public Library, the Merrick Library and the North Merrick Public Library — each of which has maintained safety protocols while offering a variety of activities, both in-person and on Zoom. “It’s been a gradual process

all along,” Merrick Library Director Dan Chuzmir said of the facility’s reopening. “We’ve recently seen a big uptick in people coming in — it’s been good to see more activity.” “We’ve had huge participation numbers in children, teen and adult programs,” added Jessica Tymecki, director of the North Bellmore Public Library. “It’s nice to see people participate.” Offering curbside book pickup since the spring of 2020, the libraries began to reopen last July, at first with limited services. “We didn’t have computers initially,” Cummings-Young

Director, North Bellmore Library recounted. “People just came in to pick up a book — there was Plexiglas up and no seats.” Last August, services such as computer use, printing, scanning and faxing resumed, and seating became available.

“It’s been based on demand and safety,” Chuzmir said of library protocol. “We had more extensive hours this summer, and we’ll be open to 8 p.m. most days after Labor Day.” The libraries have also been offering regular children’s programming, much of it outdoors. Adult programming has been taking place in person and on

Zoom. “Since last summer, we’ve been doing a ton of outdoor children’s activities,” Chuzmir said. “We’ll definitely continue to do that, even after Covid is no longer a concern. “Our indoors is open, but for programming it’s been mostly outdoor,” he added. “We’re still doing a lot of Zoom programs, Continued on page 9
