Ahh, the winter…as the winter breeze brushes our noses we get wafts of pine cones, cookies, and food. You may go in for hugs and affection from loved ones and smell their perfumes and colognes; Or maybe the host has lit that relaxing pumpkin spice candle…Regardless, these smells are enticing and aromatic, welcoming in the seasons with the warmest greetings. Well, throughout time, personal smells like these weren’t always so accessible throughout history, or even made for personal use! It was used for royals and nobles, solely for the air, and personal use was evermore rare. Many archives have records of perfumes and colognes being used throughout ancient and contemporary history. But let’s take a deeper look into the world of men's personal fragrance and colognes. It all began in 1709. The name Cologne was actually a city that is located in Germany. The man who was known to be the founder of cologne (aka Eau de Cologne) was named Giovanni Pablo Feminis, and he chose to name his new creation after the very city he was settled in: Cologne, Germany. It became a legacy of his, many coining it an “Ode to Germany”. As he remained in this city, the early 18th century would begin to roll in and bottles would come into the market, especially bottles for this new personal fragrance, which is where he would continue to create and elevate production of his personal unisex fragrances. Soon enough we would arrive in the early 19th century and the first true establishment and patent of a solely masculine fragrance (depicted on the right) would be released by a man named Ernest Daltroff; This is where the world of men’s cologne would be impacted forever.
