efore Cortes found gold in California, there was the Amazon women of Callia who was led by Queen Uzuri Usioguswa who used the gold to fashion their shields, spearheads, headgear, and body armor.

In the far-off land of Callia, the Amazonian women did not allow men on their sacred island. One day, an African king named Kokfi Dela, came to the island, in search of gold and the much talk about Amazon women he had only heard fables about. Once King Dela arrived at the shores of Calli, he was met by an Amazon ship. The King’s advi sor told the Amazons that the King of Afrika requested to visit the island of Callia to see for himself, it’s much talked about beauty and wonders that he heard so much about. The Amazon warrior replied that his request is denied and that he, and no man cannot, set foot on the island. The advisor went to tell the King of what the Amazon warrior told him. The King was furious but adhered to the denial. When the advisor returned to tell of the King’s response. He notices that another ship had joined the other and a beautiful statuette of a woman was standing on the bow of the ship in a regal golden armor, cape, and crown. It was Uzuri Usioguswa, the queen of the Amazons. Queen Uzuri told the warrior to tell the

King that although he is not allowed on the island, would he grant permission to her to come aboard their ship instead. The advisor went to report to the King of the Queen’s request and granted her to come aboard. Queen did so along with 20 of her most feared warriors. Queen Uzuri was asked to meet with King Kokfi in his private quarters and her warriors were to stay outside on the deck of the ship. The King wined and dined the Queen was treated with kindness and offered the

She then turned to the King who was being held by two of the Amazon warriors and said, “Now you see one of the reasons we don’t allow men on the island of Callia. She then noticed an open old sea chest filled with rusted, old slave shackles. “So, this is what you were thinking you would enslave us with and take us by force back to your…our Motherland?” The Queen gestured to one of her warriors to take some of the shackles with them. Queen Uzuri decided to let the King live along with a few of his injured men and return to which they came to spread the work what he had experienced with the Amazons of Callia.

Upon returning to the fortress, Queen Uzuri had her finest craftswomen design, and make golden accessories depicting the shackles they had taken form the King’s ship. She gave them the name, ‘Uhuru Ya Kujitia,’ Jewelry of freedom. Queen Uzuri and her warriors wore them with proud excellence.
