are cases of inaccurate reporting which unfortunately were tolerated by the editors. Moreover, the statements however uncalled for and even coarse has projected a picture of a chiefof-state who is utterly irresponsible. Given that he represents the nation whether people like it or not it impacts negatively on all of us. In fact, I have a handful trying to explain to friends calling from abroad that no, we do not have a goon for a President even if he may occasionally suffer from a foot in mouth disease. Back to the topic of journalist killings, are all these killings due to the hazards of the profession and in the line of duty or are some of these drug related or political killings? Notice that these happen in rural areas most of which have become drug infested and ruled by political warlords. The President elected hinted that a few of these involve media practitioners who have been compromised either paid hush money or caught in a political vendetta. Lest we be misunderstood, we have the highest regard for the journalism profession having mentored many a newsman in journalism school or on the job training in my old paper. During martial law, I paid the highest regards for the fearless journalists who defied the martial law administrators. I recall having to bail out a colleague who was arrested for running an underground paper because the mainstream media was controlled by the government. This said, it must also be stated that many of our colleagues have diverted from the straight path. While in public service, I was the victim of media bashing and merciless accusations by paid hacks. This was the most virulent when I championed the coconut farmers who wanted a return of the stolen coconut levy

thority might reside in the hands of a white race. The representatives of the American government, after taking these disturbers and natural born traitors into their confidence, gave ear to them in all things, foolishly taking it for granted, that because they were the selfconstituted leaders of an uprising against authority and of a disturbance of public order, they represented and spoke for Filipino desires and aspirations and sentiment. And so it happened funds. In sum, the local press is challenged to be more accurate in reporting the language of an outspoken, what you-see-is-what-you-get personality that is now the new tenant of the mansion by the Pasig River. This is not to say that they cannot critic his actions or turn the other way when he does something wrong. We must also take into account that the president has opted to take on very controversial issues in foreign affairs and domestic issues which makes him an easy target for vested interests here and abroad who may be using the local media to undermine his policy initiatives. History reminds us that Philippine presidents who have taken nationalistic positions and those that undermine the interest foreigners have been taken down on such flimsy excuse as buying an expensive orinolas. Indeed, President Digong is the antithesis of the shrewd politicians we have been accustomed to who feed us with statements we like to hear who bribe newsmen and speak with fork tongues, who wear their Catholic faith on their sleeves but consort with other religions for political expediency, and who never use four letter words but fool the people with false promises.

that, when these wretched agitators told the American authorities that they were good Catholics, and spoke for the Catholic people of the Philippines, and that the desire of the country was that the Friars should go, and that there was and would be no other religious question, they simply lied all along the line, and unfortunately the Americans were deceived by them.

Today’s (Cimagala) from page 6 Worse than worst is when the enemy is one´s own self. This happens when one is complacent instead of ardent in his life of piety, when a priest or bishop, for example, talks more of politics and sociology and psychology instead of God, faith and morals. In this way, preaching is emptied of the power of God, and the theologizing and philosophising do not go beyond pure intellectual exercises that do not spring from a vital contact with God. It can have the form and the trappings, but not the substance. It can have shreds of truth, but without charity. Thus, the truths are often exploited to serve selfish ends. They fail to comply with the requirements of the common good. They lack depth and scope, and often stuck in the mind without any good act produced. This kind of mindframe ends up voiding the commandments of God and building up purely human ideologies, with ever weaker links to faith and ever stronger urges to be worldly. Thus, there’s a tendency to politicize even sacred things, like the nature of marriage, or the Church itself, the sacraments, the doctrinal body of faith and morals, and even Christ himself. Some have divided Christ into a Christ of history and a Christ of faith, for example. There are inconsistencies and gaping gaps in the lives of many so-called be-

Pretensions and hypocrisies abound, and while to a certain degree these are understandable given our fragile human condition, in many cases hardly anything is done to correct them. Some so-called Christians even go against Christ´s teaching in their public functions. Their idea of governance barely goes beyond bureaucratic efficiency. Again it´s empty of its basic requirement of vital contact with God. It´s purely human, stuck with the criteria of practicality, convenience and the like, and nothing about fostering sanctity. What can we do with this widespread scenario? I suppose we just have to do what St. John the Baptist did, and what other saints did, and finally what Christ did. We just have to pursue what we know is good and is God’s will, even if there’s

no immediate social impact. The cry in the desert will have its fruits someday. In the meantime, we have to patiently learn the doctrine, wage a continuous ascetical struggle developing virtues and convictions, then start to do personal apostolate, making use of whatever circumstance we have at the moment. Of course, we should also try to aim higher and deeper, even going to public places to proclaim the good news in a world sunk in confusion, ignorance and error. All of these done always in charity, patience and hope. Let’s remember this is God’s work more than ours.

No. Even though we may make and be responsible for our own decisions as a country, we need to value our international connections, their advice and friendship. We need to admit that we, both individually and as a nation, are interdependent NOT independent!
