Negros ... From page 1 TAGO BELT TAYO. “Tago” belt in the sense that we are both shielded by Cebu and Bohol islands in the east, and we in Dumaguete are protected by the Horns of Negros in the West. These were the assessments of the Dept of Natural Resources whose areas are divided into PENRO, CENRO AND CENRO 2 in Dumaguete, to Basay, Dgte to Bais and to Ayungon, respectively. The managers of DENR are Tony Cabrido, PENRO, provincewide; Charlie Fabro for CENRO-1 and Henry Lapinig for CENRO-2. If illegal cutting of trees continue, including the cutting of young trees for FIREWOOD which is very rampant, then there is a danger of flooding and landslides along rivers. These rivers include Sicupon river in Bayawan; the Kawitan river in Sta Catalina; the river in Siaton, the Lawigan river in Bacong, the La Libertad river; Ocoy in Sibulan; and those of Tayasan and Vallehermoso. Mt. Talinis, which is supposed to have an earth fault within itself being an extinct volcano, is well protected by the geothermal reserve foresters who are closely guarding 300 hectares of mountain lands so that the geothermal steam will continue to produce power from underneath. In short, there is a continued and long effort especially by PNOC to protect our geothermal forestlands through consistent reforestation projects, and protection against illegal loggers. We have a bigger stake because we have the geothermal plants, and whose raw source of energy comes from below. It is important that the watershed be protected . We in the lowlands are the beneficiaries of this long , consistent and extra efforts in protecting the geothermal reserve forests because of the power source issue.

was done outside the PC camp in Agan-an . Seen behind him is the PC provincial commander Lt Col, (now General) Caesar Garcia and Ramos’ chief of staff Gen (now retired) Edgardo Alfabeto who is a Dumagueteño, son of the former provincial treasurer here. Now it can be told that Col. Garcia after all, had always been with the RAM, and on the day EDSA-1 erupted, he already knew what to do. He already met and conditioned his troops to wear orange arm bands on DDay. So that when EDSA-1 finally erupted, with orange arm bands ready in their pockets, the troops were just waiting for the signal. What ever that signal was, we will never know. We were all holed in our studios, covering the EDSA-1 event “live” over DYEM-FM, then called Love Radio. But somehow, Col Garcia who has been frequenting my office, meeting civilian leaders mostly at night already made insinuations about a possible Marcos ouster. Civil disobedience was almost all over the country. He used to wear that maong jacket and rode on an unmarked jeep at night. He was secretly monitoring how the people will

t could yet be the most modern commercial edifice in the heart of the city. Most of all, it is built by a grateful generation of children of one of the city’s top business scions, the UYMATIAO family, whose forefathers have been the pioneers in the city’s commercial district. The multi-million peso edifice which is to be inaugurated and blessed today, is realized in grateful appreciation to their late loving aunt INEZ E, UYMATIAO, whom the present generation of Uymatiao executives from Greg, Gerard and George all scions of the great GREGORIO “GORING” UYMATIAO, describe as “our late treasurer, who has been a loving aunt and mentor to the Uymatiao newphews and nieces” in terms of inculcating in them as children, priceless sense of values in life. The venerable grand ole man Gregorio “Goring” Uymatiao, known civic leader, started in Jan 02, 1964 as a simple hardware store along Alfonso Trece street, then known as the city’s Escolta, now named Perdices main street. Goring and his sisters ran the family enterprise with frugality, simplicity, and honesty. Today, the Uymatiao Trading, after 42 years in service, has metamorphosed into the biggest super hardware mall in the city so far, and is now known as the Uymatiao Trading Corporation starting Jan. 1979.
UYMATIAO TRADING CORPORATION Uymatiao Trading was formed January 02,1964 a business engaged in construction and hardware materials established by Gregorio E. react in case Marcos will be toppled. He seemed to have gotten a majority yes vote of support. During Marcos time, even up to the last minute when there was a false alarm that Marcos had left Malacañang, people started rejoicing. But we still heard the last voice of Marcos in the palace at dawn. Little did we know that the first family was already packing their things. Early morning, the word finally spread that Marcos and family left Malacañang at dawn of Feb. 25. Since there was yet no satellite and cable broadcast at that time, we only saw the unfolding events on CNN which was carried by a mini-cable station here. First, the word was that Marcos and family left for Laoag, Ilocos Norte. In fact this was his instruction to the pilot of the American plane that whisked him out. Later on, even without Marcos knowing, while airborne, they were told that the plane was on its way to Paoay, Hawaii which was 10 hours away. It was the top secret instruction of the U.S. embassy. Significantly, we later knew that with him on board was the young Major (now retired Gen.) Ricardo Dick de Leon who was the official guard of the first family. Dick as you know, came back to the Philippines after
Uymatiao and his sisters. Officers then were Mr. Gregorio E. Uymatiao as Manager, Inez E. Uymatiao as Cashier, Mr. Uy Khun Bing & Mr. Lorenzo Cimafranca as Sales Managers and Mrs. Rosario L Uymatiao as Assistant Sales Manager. Exactly 15 years later, January 02,1979 Uymatiao Trading Corporation was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a family corporation with Gregorio E. Uymatiao as President, Virgilia Flores as Corporate Secretary, Inez E. Uymatiao As Treasurer, and Lorenzo Cimafranca as Sales Manager. In the 1990’s the younger generation took over management with Gilbert Paul L. Uymatiao as Manager/Treasurer, Marisa Flores as Cashier and Amy L. Uymatiao as Purchasing Manager. Today: Feb.26 2006: Uymatiao Trading Corporation transfers to its new site to be able to serve the construction needs of the community and to provide a better working environment for its employees. The new site is in the newly constructed INEZ E. UYMATIAO
settling the Marcoses in Hawaii. Dick became one of the best provincial commanders of Negros Oriental. He came to Dumaguete a few months back just when he was about to retire. His sentimental journey back to Dumaguete was to thank all friends and those who supported him during his incumbency. Today, Feb. 26, Dick’s very own intelligence officer during those times, is now the present provincial PNP director of Negros Oriental who figured in several rebel encounters with Dick de Leon in the Negros mountains. His name is Sr Supt Omar Buenafe, who now heads the entire PNP command in Negros Oriental. He too, has a lot of stories to tell, not yet known to us.— 20 YEARS LATER TODAY: The tension yesterday in Ayala and EDSA was nothing compared to the tension in l986 when each Filipino near or far, can claim he was part of EDSA-1, even we the people in the Visayas and Mindano subconsciously were feeling being lifted up and felt the fresh aroma of Philippine freedom.
All troops ... (From page 1) land. They said that this is now the shining moment of the military in proving that they are not prone to support extra constitutional takeover of government which are motivated by selfish political ends. They said, they have had enough of promises of coup plotters which either failed, or were never fulfilled. They indicated that now, the troops in the field will no longer allow themselves to be used by coup plotters because they have pledged loyalty to the Constituton. However, all units of the police and military are on red alert just in case their duties will be called to defend the State and its duly constituted authorities. MEANWHILE, militant groups led by BAYAN and other affiliates continue to hold mini rallies in the city calling for the ouster of Pres. Arroyo. They said that there is no more turning back because the people at least in Manila are adamant for change. But so far, no area in the Visayas is as restless as Manila.
