efore anything else: HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! It’s the year of the horse! So the fungsuey says. -o0o-

For some people, Christiimas time like time is the saddest part of the year. Each one has his story to tell. But be glad, because the birth of the Christchild spells victory (over sin). This time is also a time for others to cross the bar, from dependence to independence. Crossing the bar of emancipation is to independence is a challenging era. Somehow, it will come to pass. -o0oGod plans everything. So don’t worry. The author said that 95% of the things we worry about will not come to pass. So, be happy, don’t worry. Or, feel free to worry, for these won’t come to pass anyway. -o0oFASHIONABLE IT wouldseem that it is now fashionable for the dept of budget and management to “negativize” approved special allotment release orders or SAROs for one reason or another. Call it coincidence but the conspiracy of events might be contributory to the negativizing of SAROS meaning, virtual withholding of already approved amount for projects form the national DBM. First, there is that on going investigation of fake SAROS . it is possible that for fear of fallinginto this catgegory, the DBM might have played safe by negativizing some SAROs we hope not only in negros oriental. Second, we have this startling discovery by Vice GovMark Macias himselfwho is an orthopedic surgeon, that there is a much cheaper automatic oxygen unit supplier in

Cebu with a price down to P35M as compared to the budgetedP50Million by capitol experts whoever they are. Macias discovered a difference of P15Milliion and Pl5 million is not peanuts these days, maybe ten years from now. Third, is perennial politics. Just because the governor is not a Liberal party member, people up their could easily find minor slips and disrupt Degamo’s programs, this time, P100M for the provincial hospital expansion which was a negativized SARO We truly agree about the NOPH expansion because at the rate people are getting sick these days, simply overcrowds NOPH even overnight. Thanks to the town ambulances w hose speed-lover dirvers find it convenient to rush tow npatients to the provincial hospital. Our secondary and primary hospitals in the districts are no longer in top shape. These are also in sick mode. So it is well for the provincial attorney Richard enojo to seek some reconsideration for the latest negative SARO reposed on P100M from the Dept of Health. Although he finds it funny sometimes, he loves his boss so padayuanna lang. But all these must be crystal clear and transparent because it is not their money but the peoples,. We also don’t mind negativizing SAROS so long as these are legally justified. Devoid of personal if not political agenda behind the scenes. But in the event the P12M intelligence fund metamorphoses into disallowed expense and is issued a disallowance order by COA, then who will pay but the accountable officer. Not the provincial board beecaue it had no

Takes two generations

P

resident Aquino who means well is too naïve to believe that reforms and changes in the system of governance, particularly the pursuit of the straight path (daangmatuid) will occur under his term. No. If serious, it should take at least two generations to get a breed of honest ,committed , and transparent public servants. And it starts with today’s children, not with the old folks. Unless we seriously train our periscopes to the new generation or two, the present one is a hopeless case. It was good that PNoy started it. He was the guy because he did not need the money and, he was not used to stealing money because he is a rich boy who has been provided everything by Mom since Day One. In a note before his assassination, Ninoy, the father, already told PNoy the son to be ready to take over and take care of Mom. He did not know that the son

was destined to take care of the nation, not just Mom. The president cannot do all things at the same time. Since he is not used to multi-tasking , then he has to bungle along the way. He could be branded as the most incompetent, inexperienced leader, but for many such an (un-adulterated ) kind is the best since he only has goodwill. If a crook takes the place of PNoy in 2016, then he better kiss his dreams goodbye because things will just go back to the old ways once a dishonest and corrupt leader takes over. So look around and see who will take over. And finally don’t forget the children and the next because they are our only hope—so long as they are oriented and reared in the proper manner. Happy New Year guys!

Helping in politics P

Dateline Manila by Bingo P. Dejaresco

OPE Francis in his September 16 homily which is given daily at Santa Marta has called the faithful to be actively involved in politics. Of course, there are volumes of Church documents saying so, especially after the Second Vatican Council—and even hereabouts, the Philippines bishops said the same but rather more categorically in their Pastoral Exhortation on Philippines Politics and in the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP-II). But Pope Francis in all trine of the Church, he said stressing the need for humility simplicity and candor said it that politics “is one of the and love. “A leader who seemingly bereft of any theo- highest forms of charity, doesn’t love, cannot govern— logical jargon and rhetoric. because it serves the com- at best they can discipline, they He rejected the idea that “a mon good.” Which is why, can give a little bit of order, but good Catholic doesn’t med- he said, one cannot just they can’t govern… and every dle in politics.” That is not a shrug it off since every citi- man, every woman who has to good path, he said, because zen is responsible for par- take up the service of govern“a good Catholic meddles in ticipating in politics ac- ment, must ask themselves politics, offering the best of cording to his/her ability. two questions: ‘Do I love my Reflecting on the Gospel people in order to serve them himself, so that those who govern can govern…that they about the centurion (Lk 7:1- better? he New Year is a time for optimism. No matter how bleak or how low life sometimes brings us, the New Year always ushers hope for much better, happier days ahead. That is the reason why we greet each other a "happy" new year. Let me offer my prayers for a bountiful new year for everyone. For those wo lost practically everything due to natural calamities, here is a sincere prayer and hope that the new year will allow them to recover and rebuild. For those who lost their jobs this year, here's hoping that in the new year, you find work, or work finds you. For those who oppose the freshly minted law on Reproductive Health, I hope that the new year will provide another opportunity to ventilate and advance their cause in clamping down this piece of legislation, this time, in the courts of law. For those who have felt dissatisfaction on the poor performance of their incumbent political leaders, the new year certainly brings hope and opportunity to re-assess, and if warranted, choose others to run the affairs of government. For those living in the crossfires of war, we hope the new year will bring peace. For those who have been injured, we hope the new year brings healing. As we welcome the new year, let us all be filled with hope that despite the odds, life will be better, happier. I remember my favorite movie, "Shawshank Redemption," when Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) left a letter to fellow prisoner Red (Morgan Freeman): "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies" There is always good reason to be hopeful. Happy New Year! 40 40

Fantasy... From page 1 day, only difference was I did not have to sweat or risk my life. I often volunteered to work so people with families could go home to their loved ones. They had what I only dreamed of having; why should they suffer too. In my entire life I can count on one hand the number of Christmas celebrations I can remember with any joy. Last week that changed; my life changed. I suddenly found myself with a family; a Filipino family that respected and loved me. The home was filled with smiling faces, beautiful off-key kareoke and lots of laughter. There were tables full of delicious food and nobody went away hungry. Nobody went hungry and nobody went unloved. Even members of the family who

had strayed from the fold were forgiven and welcomed back with open arms. While there were presents, it was more about people than things. The joy was so infectious that neighbors even came to share in the merriment. Children were everywhere. The special music of happy children laughing was everywhere. The evening was the realization of a dream I have had since my childhood. A fantasy turned into reality. Many have criticized me for putting my marital problems in the paper. I did that to stop rumors and gossip that inevitable happens in this community. At least with me, you knew the truth not just the gossip. Over a year ago my wife came back to me. She changed dramatically. She was even more loving and devoted than the day we were mar-

fected by recent disasters. ECO FRIENDLY TIPS The World Wide Fund for Nature issued the following tips for a green New Year Celebration: Use LED light emitting diode for lighting; buy and use local products; bring recyclable bags when shopping, make your own Christmas greeting cards, use

biodegradable and smoke free soy candles; use recycled décor, give green gifts; raise the air conditioner’s thermostat one degree Celsius; use recycled paper to wrap gifts; buy and eat only what you can finish. BY TRADITION But by tradition, gift giving continues, lots of food preparation and greeting the new year with fireworks. Holding green celebration means doing environment friendly activities. We can wrap gifts with recycled paper, reusable bags, and prepare only enough food that will avoid wastage. No longer shall we plant trees, but GROW TREES, help restore our environment and mitigate climate change especially in the uplands. FOR NEW YEAR M e r r yma k i n g should include firecracker and fireworks zones, avoid excessive spending for fireworks, dce post revelry debris in the streets and minimize air pollution .

There are also job orders who come to working as volunteers at first, but later, they will demand back salaries. This, the provincial board will change and prevent next year. Reports also have it that some department heads hire job orders without prior appropriation by the sanggunian. Sometimes this results into duplication of functions because the provincial board was denied prior deliberation whether or not the job order is really needed. GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES Now all this happened in order to make come true what the Lord had said through the prophet, “A virgin will become pregnant and have a son, and he will be called Immanuel” (which means, “God is with us”). – Matthew 1:22,23

H

eaven and earth will dissappear, but my words will remain forever. However, no one knows the day or the hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.

“When the Son of man returns, it will be like it was Noah’s day. In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes. “Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left. Two women will be grinding flour at the mill; one will be taken, the other left. So be prepared, because you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. Know this:

A home owner who knew exactly when a burglar was coming would stay alert and not permit the house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time for the Son of Man will come when least expected.” Mathew 24:35-44. It is good that we don’t know exactly when Christ will return. If we knew the precise date, we might be tempted to be lazy in our work for Christ. Christ’s second coming will be swift and sudden. There will be no opportunity for last-minute repentance or bargaining. The choice we have already made will determine our eternal destiny.

Having a baby is about the most exciting thing that can happen. We aren’t told about how long Mary was in labour, was it an easy or difficult labour, who helped with the delivery, or how the couple felt as they held this tiny child in their arms for the first time. The Gospel writer is more concerned about telling us what kind of crib this baby had than anything else. I guess we can presume that Mary and Joseph were excited and over-awed like any other parents. They had a part to play in bringing a new life into the world. But unlike other parents they had already had a preview of what kind of life this tiny child would have. They may not have known all the details but they had been told be the angel Gabriel that this was

little bundle was “the Son of the Most High God” and that “he will save his people from their sin”. They were told a few days later, that this child will bring them deep sadness. Old Simeon told them, “Sorrow like a sharp sword will break your own heart.” The name “Jesus” (Yeshua in Hebrew, often translated as “Joshua.”) means, “God saves.” Jesus would truly live up to his name. He would die as the Saviour of the world. The reason he came and was born in this world was so that he could die. When we look at a baby, we wonder what kind of life this child will have. We wonder what things will happen as life unfolds for this child, we don’t give death a second thought. But with Jesus, it was different. Jesus’ death was ever so important.

CBCP pastoral statement (Part 3) MT 2:13-15,19-23 hen the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, out of Egypt I called my son. When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said,

W

“Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee. He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, He shall be called a Nazorean.

s Pope Francis has been repeatedly telling Catholics, you must go into the world of the family, of business, of economics, of politics, of education, of the mass media FR. GAMMY TULABING and the social media, to JCD, VG every human endeavour where the future of humanity and the world are at stake and to make a difference, the difference that the Gospel and the grace of Christ bring to human affairs. Our Situation: The Challenge of the Gospel When we look at our Philippine world with the eyes of faith, there are several areas of special concern which you, our lay faithful should direct your attention and action to. Pope Francis calls our attention to “the great danger in today’s world, pervaded as it is by consumerism, is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart, the feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a blunted conscience. Whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. This is a very real danger for believers too. Many fall prey to it, and end up resentful, angry and listless. That is no way to live a dignified and fulfilled life; it is not God’s will for us, nor is it the life in the Spirit which has its source in the heart of the risen Christ. (EvangeliiGaudium, 2). Poverty Poverty is a social and spiritual problem in our country. A great percentage of our people live below the poverty line. They do not even have the necessities for decent human living. It is estimated that twelve million of our people have gone to foreign countries in their search for adequate income to support their families’ needs. While this has brought many material advantages, it has also resulted in great harm to family life. And many of our overseas Filipino workers work in conditions of servitude and are often submitted to humiliations. A still a vast number of our people are without work, and many are forced to live in slum

T

he Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome graded on 4 July 1972 the doctoral dissertation Summa Cum Laude. A copy of this monumental work by Fr. Angel Martinez Cuesta, OAR is preREV. FR. ROMAN C. served in the SAGUN, JR. ArchivoRecoleto in Mira-nila Homes, Quezon City. Titled “Historia de la Isla de Negros, Filipinas, 1565 – 1898”, the work of the Spanish Recollect historian has thirteen chapters grouped into three parts. Part I is originally titled “Proceso de Transculturacion, 1565-1660”. In Appendix I captioned Jefes Provinciales de la Isla de Negros, the internationally known historian lists the names of the not less than sixtyfive corregidores (military governors) between 1625 and 1839. Among them were Pedro de Alcaraz (1625?-1627), Jeronimo Benegas(16271629?), Juan de Leon (1629-1631), and Juan Ferrer (1652). In the English translation, Part II is captioned “Barren Years, 16601800”.Also in Appendix I, it lists as military governorsof the Negros Island Pedro de Tortosa (1666-1668?), Jacinto Rivera (1668-1669), Nicolas Jurado (1669-1671), and Agustin Martinez (1671-1673?). Fast forward after fifteen corregidores, they were as follows in the 1700s: Francisco Tabares (1699-1701), Ramon Diaz Ruizbobo (1702-1703), Felix de Cabrera (1703-1705?), Francisco de Figueroa (1709?-1711), Bartolome Gallardo (1711), Ricardo Ricarte (17141716), Juan Bautista de Sameta (17161718), and Fernando de Rojas (1719). From the 1720s to 1780s, there were another eighteen military governors assigned to Negros. They were followed by: Felipe de Zuñiga (1779-1785), To page 16 To page15

From page 1 of passengers were safely rescued by local volunteer teams. Two died in that storm because they did not heed the warnings to stay away from rampaging waters. They got lost at sea. BAYAWAN FLOODWATERS On October 6 came the biggest flood in Bayawan City, the consistent Gawad awardee yet went underwater last Oct 6 after two days of continuous heavy rains. Environmentalits say that such was a natural occurance with continued rains but the flood waters of Bayawan subsided in less than 24 hours, leaving a sizable path of destruction to crops and properties. It was the start of a no-nonsense preparedness against natural disasters among local government units.

1

OCT 15 QUAKE Then came the big one: a 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook Dumaguete and suburbs, it was a spill over of Bohol’s biggest earthquake of 7.2 magnitude which destroyed major infrastructures , mostly old church buildings. The 6.2 magnitude quake spilled over Dumaguete and did not create a major damage except minor cracks on local buildings. NOV 8 YOLANDA SUPER TYPHOON Then came Yolanda the biggest and strongest super typhoon to hit the country. At first Dumagete was in its direct path from Leyte. But by work of nature Yolanda shifted its course up north and spared Negros Oriental. Instead, it hit Panay island and Negros Occidental. But this time, the people were prepared. Big gymnasiums in the towns and cities were already filled up with evacuees before the storm. When the storm came, it was reduced to a tropical depression, a clear blessing of God indeed! Had Yolanda’s path hit Negros Oriental, you already know what was to , but did not, happen.

UNDERWATER SURGE The Greenpeace marine sea environmental protectors and monitors dropped anchor at Apo Island last July and explored and mapped out the effects of the storm surge of typhoons Sendong and Pablo. The result was the devastation of 99% of underwater corals which has virtually wiped out centuries of build-up of beautiful world renown corals of Apo Island. The cause was the typhoon surge, meaning those giant underwater waves which simply swept away the beautiful corals and marine life. It will take at least a generation to restore the glory and grandeur that was Apo Island, known the world over as among the best dive sites in the globe. P960-M Calamity Fund Congress finally probed the P960-million “negativized” Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) which was intended by the DBM as restoration and rehabilitation of damaged river dikes and infrastructures caused by the two typhoons. Many believed it was political intervention that pulled out the SARO , but too late, the governor went ahead and had bidden the projects to 11 out-of-town contractors, mostly from Bicol, and only one from Dumaguete. Congress wants to know thru its committee on national defense how and why the governor proceeded with the bidding when there was a recall order. The order was anchored on the policy that DPWH will handle infrastructures worth over P10-million. And this was P960Million!

Elsewhere, it is known as the physic nut, or jatrophacurcas, and scientifically known as croton tigliumlinn. Others call it tubang-bakod or tawwatawwa because it is commonly planted as a fence around residential and farm lots. Ordinarily, the seeds are used as purgative while the leaves and bark are used for treating fractured bones and pain in the abdomen. In Negros Oriental, proponent of the benefits of

jatropha not only as a renewable source of energy, but also as it impacts on the effects of climate change is 91-year-old former Congressman Herminio G. Teves. To farmers and environmentalists, Teves shares that petroleum-based chemical pesticides could now be replaced by a botanical pesticide, which is the jatropha. “We have to acknowledge the contribution by scientists of the Cotton Research and De-

velopment Institute (CRDI) based in Batac, Ilocos Norte for this discovery. We can now lessen the contamination of our environment and reduce the high cost of production as well as over dependence on chemical pesticides. This is our share in the preservation of our environment,” the veteran solon said who, until today, acts as a consultant in Congress, affording him to go to Manila every week. The experiments conducted by Dr. Aida DecenaSolsoloy, an entomologist at CRDI, have revealed that the crude oil extracted from jatropha is a good source of insecticide that is not harmful to the environment. Moreover, according to Dr. Solsoloy, through the jatropha, agricultural pests like weevil for stored grains like corn, rice, and munggo beans, can also be controlled. On the other hand, golden snail, a major rice pest, could also be controlled through dust formulation of jatropha. It has also been gathered that

BY CECILE M. GENOVE with the proper formulation, jatropha wards off household pests such as cockroaches, rats, and houseflies. HEALTH IS WEALTH

PSYCHOSOMATIC ILLNESS “The emotionally-caused illnesses make some doctors and quacks richer through their suggestions and patients’ gullibility.” -Anonymous

P

robably, a lot of people know in everyday experience DR. ANGEL V. SOMERA that fainting spells, blushing, pounding of the chest, tearfulness or crying, laughing, nausea or vomiting, etc. Fellow, Philippine could be induced by emotional stimulation most especially to the easily suggestible, oversensitive or gullible Psychiatric Association individuals. We have to know at the present moment that chronic or long-term emotional stress can promote or even set off long-term illness known as psychosomatic illness. Doctors often use the term to describe the illness induced by emotional or psychological factors. The famous American Psychiatrist, Dr. Karl Menninger estimated that half or 50% of the outpatients who consulted to doctors in their respective clinics suffered ailments related to unresolved inner conflicts in life such as fear, anger, resentment and other unresolved negative feelings. The human organism could no longer tolerate the constant and repeated stress and would therefore transfer the problem from the “psyche” (the mind) to the “soma” (the body). Hence, “psychosomatic” (mind-body) illness unconsciously would become meaningful to the affected organ of the person. Psychosomatic illnesses that are induced by emotional factors are the following: > Heart attack - the expressions: “heartbroken or died with a heavy heart” > Peptic Ulcer - Victims are the “ambitious or aggressive, go-getter, independent type.” > Bronchial Asthma - Victims are the “oversensitive and allergic types of persons.” > Arthritic Patients - They are sensitive to life situations and have poor personal relationships. > Hypertensive Patients - People who are unable to express their rage or anger. > Impotence and frigidity – Unresolved hostility towards the partner and sexual ignorance. > And many others. Only psychiatrists can resolve them!

Let Christmas.. Hogue’s hero... (Cimagala)

From page 6 This Christmas, let’s take account of the challenges of our times. There are many disturbing developments that we need to face always with the spirit of Christmas. That would be the spirit of truth given in charity and causing joy everywhere. At the moment, I can think of how many young people today are trivializing the sacredness of marriage and sex. Reports are rampant of what are called hook-up relations, the proliferation of the so-called selfie culture that promotes egoism and vanity. In the area of politics, we now have so much inhuman partisanship that the different characters involved are now into red-hot acrimony and bashing. There is now fanaticism in the mainstream. It’s the new normal, as if basic courtesy and giving others the benefit of the doubt should be shot down on sight. We are getting farther away from the true spirit of Christmas. And the irony of it all is that we like to f launt our Christmas greetings and feastings. It has become a Christmas without Christ. Sadder still is the fact that we don’t seem to realize it. Our ignorance and inconsistency appear invincible. But I know there’s always hope. That’s what Christmas also tells us. God’s ways are like water that through the most difficult mountains can still manage to pass to the sea. Let Christmas be everyday!

executioners – to quite those whom the Emperor prescribed. What was man for but to serve Caesar? There was the persecution of men who dared think differently, who heard strange voices or read strange manuscripts. There was enslavement of men whose tribes came not from Rome , disdain for those who did not have the familiar visage. And most of all, there was everywhere a contempt for human life. What, to the strong, was one man more or less in a crowded world? Then, a sudden, there was a light in the world, and a man from Galilee saying :. Render unto Caesar the things that are God’s. And the voice from Galillee, which would defy Caesar, offered a new Kingdom in which each man could walk upright and bow to none but his God. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my breathren, ye have done it unto me. And he sent this gospel of the Kingdom of Man

As an additional bonus, student volunteers will get training on various construction skills. (plumbing, carpentry, masonry etc.) The initial funds are being provided by the Bear Valley Church in Lakewood, Colorado. Under the sheperdship of Pastor Jim Walters, this small church alone has already donated more, two million dollars, than the entire nation of China. If you can not help this worthy project, at least take the time to send a “thank you” to Pastor Walters and his congregation. My “Everyday Hero this week is Professor Fred Hogue and his wife “Twiggy”. (note: She does not look like “Twiggy” at all, she is a very attractive lady) In addition to this timely project, Professor Hogue and his wife are also involved in training and financing specially selected struggling poor farmers on how to build a prosperous agri-business. Their help includes actually building facilities and increasing profits. It is one thing to give away “fish”, but much more helpful to teach someone how to “fish”. Obviously, in the future, they can feed themselves and train others. We do not need “dependency”; we need self-sufficiency and independence.

tion of the industry – the processing of copra into coconut oil and higher value products such as cooking oil, soap and cocochemicals among others – the rationale apparently for the forced purchase of oil mills from the private sector and foreign firms. It was also supposed to save the coconut farmer from the clutches of loan sharks through the purchase of a private bank – the First United Bank, which was owned by P-Noy’s family and renamed the United Coconut Planters Bank after the family through cousin Danding was able to convince Marcos to deposit the proceeds of the government-owned levy, deposited with a government financial institution the NIDC, to the private bank above. A seed nut plantation in Bugsuk Island, in Palawan ,was intended to provide farmers from all over the country with new coconut varieties while an insurance company set up to insure the coconut farmers was only able to insure a limited number of farmers belonging to the Cocofed for a measly P5, 000. Unfortunately none of these projects costing billions really made a difference in the lives of the farmers who continue to wallow in poverty.

Behind the gloom, yet still within our reach is joy. Take joy for your heart this Christmas. Life is actually a very generous giver, but because we judge the gifts of life by their covering, we cast them away as ugly, or heavy, or hard. Remove the covering from the gifts of life and you will find beneath it a living splendor woven of love. Welcome life and its gifts, our leaders have kept them poor by their greed for money and power. What are you doing to help get worthy people to positions of authority and power? What are you doing to get rid of the politics of patronage, violence and uneducated choices? What are you doing, our dear lay faithful to rid our country of graft and corruption? Do you perhaps participate in corrupt practices by selling your votes, by buying votes, by bribery and acceptance of kickbacks?

and you touch the angel’s hand that brings life to you. The angel’s hand is in everything that we call a trial, a duty, or a sorrow. And the gift is there too – the Christmas gift of God. There are joys this Christmas, too. But do not be content with them only as joys. They also conceal God’s gifts as well. Life is full of meaning and purpose. It is full of beauty beneath its covering. I pray that this Christmas you will discover that earth is only a cloak for heaven. All we need then is courage this Christmas – courage to claim the heaven which is in the midst of our earth. That courage is God’s Christmas gift to us who are pilgrims together wending our way home through a strange country. So this Christmas, I send you greetings. They are not exactly the kind of greetings the world sends. But I send them to you with great love and with the prayer that for you this Christmas and forever the day will break and the shadows will flee away.”

But hereabouts, this perspective is not in the politician’s dictionary. In the Philippines politics is, to borrow the bishops’ statement, “possibly the biggest bane in our life as a nation and the most pernicious obstacle to our achieving of full human development.” Sadly, it has been culturally debased into the characterizations of the underworld: patronage, racketeering and organized thievery. In this country, this brand of politics has been tolerated and condoned for decades now, perhaps without realizing its catastrophic effect to the nation’s and people’s lives. With the present stench and outrage about the pork barrel anomalies, the time is now for the lay faithful to narrow the

to be like Moses sitting by our desert wells for the rest of our lives. So let us look at ourselves. Have there been events in the year 2013 that disrupted our lives – serious illness loss of loved ones, conflict with others, even with those close to us, that resulted in alienation, loss of job, failure in business, diminished income, or any situation beyond our control that sidelined us. Perhaps we had the best of intentions, but a combination of circumstances and our illadvised actions resulted in disastrous consequences. And so we end up secondguessing and blaming ourselves. Strange as it may seem, it is when we are in the midst of life’s “desert wells” that God calls us to embark on new beginnings. Beginning anew confronts us with uncertainty. It is like God giving us half a map saying that we will get the other half of that map when we get to the end of our journey. In the face of uncertainty and unmarked terrain ahead of us, let us feel assured that God will always be with us, as God was with Moses, empowering us to move forward. To begin anew means, as St. Paul puts it, to leave the past behind, letting go of broken promises, shattered dreams and unfulfilled expectations and moving on, looking forward to God’s future. It was Christmas morning,

can fill. Life is a series of stages that mold us. How we respond to certain situation depends on how strong our foundation is within. Psychologists say that an infant who was abandoned by the very people who should have given him care and love

will have difficulty in trusting the world. But this man turned his misfortune into something positive. Knowing that he was unwanted as a baby, all he wished was to love others. He knew that he was born with a purpose, that he was a recipient of an unconditional love that only God can give.

and the little boy wanted the shiny new toy his daddy was holding, but he already had hands full of other toys. Daddy said, “You’ll have to put those other things down before I can give you this one.” What is God waiting to hand you and me right now – waiting until we empty our hands of old hearts and fears? Beginning again requires putting the past behind us (Michael Duduit, Abingdon Preaching Manual, p. 23). To begin anew, we also must really begin to do the right thing again and again even if in the process we fail from time to time to do it rightly. Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of the incandescent light was once asked, “How do feel when you fail ninety-nine times out of a hundred.” “That only shows,” he replied, “that there are ninety-nine wrong ways of doing something, and one right way of doing it.”

Babe Ruth was for many years the all-time home run champion, with 714 major league home runs. But did you know he was also the all-time strikeout champion? In fact, he struck out twice as often as he hit home runs. He knew that he had to risk some strikeouts in order to hit home runs. Someone asked Babe Ruth the secret of his success. He said, “I just keep on swingin’ at ‘em!” (Michael Duduit, “A Dream of Beginning Again”).

sorting to petroleum-based chemical pesticides,” says Dr. Solsoloy. Mother Nature, according to Dr. Solsoloy, could help us solve environmental problems if only we are keen and resourceful to discover them. In fact, explains Dr. Solsoloy, pesticide from jatropha is simple and easy to make. Even the farmers themselves can make it. As described by the scientists, the formulated product is yellow and turns white when mixed with water. Its odor is similar but less intense than that of kerosene. It forms a uniform suspension with water. Thus, it is convenient for small farmers to use jatropha because it does not clog the nozzle of the knapsack sprayer. Moreover, the threat of contamination is less. Commercialization of the product is currently being planned, with a cooperative in Batangas planning to embark on its mass production. The National PostHarvest Institute for Research and Extension is also coordinating on the possibility of trying it on several stored grain insect pests. The development and recognition of tubangbakod as a source of safe and effective pesticide in the form of an emulsifiable concentrate is a breakthrough in pest control. Through the formulated jatropha, we could either have an alternative source

volvement or personal compassion and social justice. Active religious express their charisms in spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Some exercise an apostolate of service; some teach doctrine; some encourage through exhortation, give retreats and train lay leaders; some give in simplicity, or serve the pastoral work of the Church by educating the young, caring for the sick, and discharging other services. All have been summoned by the Second Vatican Council to renew and to adapt their lives to modern needs. This renewal is necessary. An urgent dimension is for religious to have a passion for justice. People are groping towards an experience of Christ and waiting in hope for His kingdom of love, of justice and of peace. The needs and aspirations of the world are an appeal for the Gospel. It will not be possible to bring Christ to people, or to proclaim His Gospel effectively unless a firm decision is taken to devote ourselves to the tasks of justice. Injustice must be attacked

The difference is, that it’s now the call of line agencies to approved, and be held accountable. 9./2016 BATTLE ROYALE It could be the most significant political battle royale for the governorship in 2016 between incumbent Gov Roel Degamo who won by landside on May 13 election and balik-governor Rep George Arnaiz who is a veteran in the position. Both are protégées of the late Gov Dodo Macias..Arnaiz NPC has coalesced with Josy Limkaichong LP, who intends to retake her seat in congress in 2016. 10. POLITICAL DYNASTIES While the last elections had divided the big Teves political clan, and the durable Fua political dynasty of Siquijor toppled, it has only been replaced by several others like the Dela Cruzes in Amlan, the Villanuevas, the Degamos, and the Macias among other clans in this highly politicized province. of pesticides or reduce the use of hazardous chemical pesticides. A botanical pesticide like jatropha is not only effective, it is also low-cost, biodegradable, and does not harm at its roots which are in the human heart by transforming those attitudes and habits which beget injustice and forster the structures of oppression. At the same time, service according to the Gospel cannot dispense with a carefully planned effort to exert influence on those structures. The life and mission today of apostolic communities is to serve the Gospel in apostolates whose aim is to help people become more open toward God and more willing to live according to the demands of the Gospel. This service demands a life in which the justice of the Gospel shines out in a willingness not only to recognize and respect the rights of all, especially the poor and powerless, but also to work actively to secure those rights. This is of course the fruit of the Spirit who transforms our hearts ands fills them with the power of God’s mercy, that mercy whereby He most fully shows forth His justice by drawing us, unjust though we are, to his friendship.
