NegOr-Siquijor GSP tops other councils

N

egros Oriental-Siquijor Council of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) and its council executive bested 15 other councils, for the third time, in Region 6, 7, and 8 this year. The council covering Negros Oriental and Siquijor provinces was ranked the outstanding GSP council during the annual Council Performance Appraisal Report done July 22 this year by Mayor Paz Radaza of Lapu-Lapu, Cebu who sits as GSP Regional Chairman, and Aida Saromines, Visayas Regional Executive Director. “The subsidy given by the LGUs is one of the important factors why we were ranked as outstanding, because this is being done only in Negros Oriental,” said Rosales. Its membership is currently at 39,771 as of June 30, 2011.

Coconut gets four times more budget

T

he replanting of coconut, as well as its fertilization program all over the country, has been allotted a budget four times bigger than its existing budget. The budget has been raised to P260 million from the P60 million budget last year, or four times bigger with an additional allotment expected through the Department of Agriculture Sec. Proceso Alcala. This was confirmed by Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) administrator Euclides Forbes who graced the provincial coconut farmer leaders’ conference in Negros Oriental. On the salt fertilization program, the PCA administrator is encouraging local producers of salt to bid which is ongoing in the regional level. Forbes said this will save the government P20 million nationwide which will also be used for the purchase of salt fertilizer for coconuts. Small coconut farmers who intend to produce their own salt fertilizer will be provided with materials, and their production will be bought by the PCA at an approved price ceiling. Provincial PCA manager Brendan Trasmonte said that this is a big boost to the province’s replanting program being initiated by the provincial government and the three congressmen of the province. The province has an estimated 93,000 hectares of land planted with 9 million coconuts, 20% of which are senile and unproductive, which is now the target of a replanting program.
