But here’s the catch and a tempting offer from the European Union: collect even half of your delinquent real estate taxes in Negros Oriental towns and cities, and in return a grant of P90million is to be given as an EU gift, to Turn to page 15

he opposition whoever they are (since they are all fragmented) met this week in Makati at the Club Filipino to announce a campaign to stop the holding of the long-overdue constitutional change because apparently, they themselves are not yet prepared to unite. “STOP means Sa Tamang Oras at Paraan,” because they all have different agenda. That’s why STOP is born. The People have been patient in waiting for the opposition to unite and come up with a common leader to show their desire for united reforms. Until now, they have failed and continue to be dis-united. Therefore, the people have concluded that none of them can lead this country at this time. That is why, the People rallied back to Gloria Arroyo. I talked to a taxi driver last week in Manila. He was emotional in saying that “change we want, but since the opposition cannot offer any leader, then we have to hang on to Pres. Arroyo and hope for the best, until her term expires. To rock the boat now, with no successor in sight is suicidal.” I was impressed on how accurate common-Manilans pala (after all) know the real issues. Conclusion: it is just a small noisy circle of the jealous and envious opposition who are financing and making all that fuss in Metro. They are a tiger cat without claws. Cory Aquino is dead wrong in thinking that she still has that cory magic of old. She hasn’t even caused the arrest of her husband’s murderer and mastermind despite her vast powers before. Thanks to the Supreme Court for declaring CPR, that “calibrated pre-emptive response” as null and void. It means Democracy is still very much alive in our country. What is left is maximum tolerance. And it’s perfectly legal. The drama of the death penalty is also unfolding. Where on earth did you see a Chief Justice render an OPINION on a very controversial issue like the death penalty? By saying it is unconstitutional , Mr Chief Justice has virtually inhibited himself from further deliberations about the death penalty. He made a graceful excuse. Another segment of the drama is that , Chief Justice Panganiban’s “pre-emptive declaration” of unconstitutionality is actually a balancing political act. Now, Gloria can have a perfect reason for dropping the death penalty once declared illegal. She is now safe from attacks by human rightists and militant advocates of anti death peanlty —and whew! the Church which has been a major pressure maker. And it was also a very subtle way of condoning the crime of Romy Jalosjos who was a major vote contributor for PGMA in Zambo. del Norte, and giving life to the Cebu murder-rapists of the Chiong sisters. 93rd SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES Luce Auditorium Lobby, March 26, 2006

I

t is a privilege of mine to be here. In 2003, I was requested to be the commencement speaker for the graduating class of the University of the Philippines-Diliman. And after I gave that address, I said to myself—and this is true—the only other invitation that I will accept after UP Diliman is Silliman University. I have actually been waiting for almost three years. And I would have waited 30 more years to address you. You may be asking, “Why is that?” It is simply because of the Christian roots and the Christian heritage that this university has; the same roots and the same heritage that my great grandmother, my grandmother, and even my mother have tried to instill in my life. That is why I am here. So thank you very much for the privilege. I am actually quite excited to address all of you. One of the questions running in your mind today as you graduate and move forward is, “How do I reach the top?” A fair question and one that needs to be answered. And since I presently handle marketing for both PLDT and Smart, let me share with you some marketing principles that I have learned, that may guide you on your quest to the top. A battle for the mind Success in marketing is a battle to be the first in the mind of the consumer. That is the principle proposed in the ‘80s by two authors, Al Ries and Jack Trout, in their classic book, “Positioning.” Ries and Trout said that success in marketing is a battle to be the first in the mind of the consumer. If you are first in the mind of the consumer, in most cases, you will rise to the top and become the leader or number one. So, the battle is to be the first in the mind. Let’s give a couple of examples. When I say cola, what comes first in your mind? It’s Coke. And today, Coke has risen to the top and is number one. When you say beer, the first thing that comes into your mind is San Miguel. They are first in the mind, they are at the top, and they are the leader. When you say toothpaste, in most cases, what comes to mind is Colgate. The same rule holds true. Colgate is at the top of your mind, and they are number one. When you say photocopier, it’s Xerox. They are first in the mind, they are the leader, and they have risen to the top. Let’s try something more hip for the new generation kids. When you say mp3 player, what’s first in your mind. I can actually read your mind. The iPod. They are first in the mind, they are at the top, and today, they are number one. So, in many instances, the rule actually works. If you want to rise to the top, you have to be the first in the mind. The second thing that Al Ries and Jack Trout talked about, aside from being the first in the mind of the consumer, is burning an attribute or a characteristic in the minds of the consumers. For example, Volvo did that. They burned into the mind of the consumer the attribute of safety. If you want a safe car, Volvo is it. iPod, for example, is burning in all our minds the attribute of being cool. They want to drive into our minds that the Ipod is the coolest gadget in the universe today. So, two concepts we learn from Marketing to reach the top: Be the first in the mind and burn an attribute in the mind. Then, you start rising to the top. So what does this all mean to you, as you go out into the workplace? If you guys want to start rising to the top, you have to do the same thing. You have to be the first or the top of mind amongst the people that you work for specially your boss. When the boss needs something done, you have to be the first in his mind. If you’re just the third, or the fourth, or the fifth, or the tenth in his mind, you’re just like a company that is in third, fourth or fifth position — far, far away from rising to the top. But like I said earlier, being top of mind is not enough. You also have to burn an attribute in his mind. Now, a slight word of caution. Burning an attribute in your boss’s or co-worker’s mind is a double-edged sword. You have to make sure that you burn a positive attribute and not a negative one. Ries and Trout explain that it is very difficult or next to impossible to dislodge an attribute in one’s mind once it has been established. If you go into the workplace and the attribute you burn in your boss’s mind is tatamad tamad ka (you’re lazy), mahirap kang pakisamahan(you’re not a team player), or di ka mapagkakatiwalaan (you’re not trustworthy) then chances are, that attribute will stick in his mind for years to come and you’ll have a hard time rising to the top. How many classmates do you know have been branded “lazy”, “a flirt”, “playboy”, “cheater” etc. Think about it, no matter how hard they try to change their image, it just sticks and is so hard to dislodge from your mind isn’t it? That’s how powerful burning an attribute in the mind is, positive or negative. So, key lesson is if you want to rise to the top, you have to be the first in their mind and you must burn positive attributes in their mind. Discipline This leads me to the question, “What attribute should you burn in the

T

OP

minds of the people in today’s world?” There are many attributes that I would have wanted to share with you, but in the interest of time, I will focus on two. The first one is the attribute of discipline. If we want to be able to compete not only with our peers, but with the best in the world, we have no choice. As a person, as a people, and as a country, we have to be disciplined. Discipline is a very fascinating thing. In the world of competition, you’re always competing with somebody else. There is Smart competing with Globe, There is GMA competing with ABS-CBN, there is Sony competing with Samsung, and the list goes on. But when it comes to discipline, you are not competing with anybody else. You are only competing with yourself. And if you lose, guess who actually loses, only you. A year and a half ago, I went to a leadership conference in Singapore that put together and assembled some of the best speakers in the world. I actually had to pay a huge amount—probably my whole month’s salary—just to be able to enter that conference. Al Ries was speaking. Film legend, Francis Ford Coppola was speaking, Rudy Giuliani, who led New York to rise from the 911 crisis, was speaking and Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister of Singapore was one of the speakers. I wanted to listen to Lee Kuan Yew and what he had to say. Lee Kuan Yew shared how he built Singapore from nothing to where it is today. He shared that Singapore, barely a generation ago, was far worse than many of its peers. But today, it is an economic superpower. He narrated that when he first started to lead Singapore, he asked his think tank to visit neighboring countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and figure out what they don’t have. He said they all came back with one conclusion: These countries lacked discipline. So to differentiate Singapore from its neighbors, he decided to build his country on discipline. This meant that if Singapore promised something to its people, to its foreign investors, and to other countries, it will be fulfilled. A disciplined country and a disciplined people-that’s what he built Singapore on. Discipline is a very important attribute all of us must have to be able to bring this country up from where it is today. If you want to reach your goals and dreams, you cannot do it without discipline. One of my good friends is the president of Alaska Milk, Fred Uytengsu. I used to see him on the baseball field when he used to coach his son’s team and I was an assistant for my son’s team. One day, I saw him wearing a shirt that said, “If you don’t have discipline, you don’t deserve to dream.” No matter how harsh it may seem, the point is true. If you’re 350 lbs. overweight and you’re dreaming to become the next big hunk, but you don’t have the discipline to watch what you eat, to exercise, and to make it happen, it isn’t going to happen. Don’t even bother dreaming, if you don’t have the discipline to make it a reality. You’ll just get frustrated. That’s how important discipline is in achieving success. In the world of business, discipline is defined as work ethic. I’d like to share with you an anecdote from a great man who epitomized what work ethic is all about. Thomas Alva Edison. At the age of 82, the President of the United States said it was about time he was honored with an award for his lifetime work. So they put together a huge event in honor of Thomas Alva Edison. Being 82, he felt a bit sick that night and fainted. Good thing they were able to revive him and he was still able to go up on stage. Edison upon accepting the award simply said, “I am tired of all this glory. I want to get back to work.” 82 years old, and all he can think of is going back to work. That is work ethic. That is discipline. And that is one of the attributes we need to burn in people’s minds if we are to rise to the top. Execution The second attribute we should burn is execution. We need to be able to drive in the minds of the people that we work with that we are the “go-to” guy. That if they want to make something happen, you are the guy to go to, because you are the person who can execute. Execution is one of the attribute that will help you rise to the top. I’d like to quote one of the greatest mentors of all time who said to his pupil: “Luke, there is no try. There is either do or not do.” You know who that is? That is Yoda teaching Luke Skywalker of Star Wars one of the most important lessons in life: execution or making it happen. An icon of execution, of course, is Michael Jordan. He is arguably one of the greatest basketball players that ever lived, but not without getting the ball, taking that shot, and executing the play. Can you imagine what would have happened to Michael if all he ever did was to plan on shooting the ball but never did? One of the things you have to remember about execution though is that it doesn’t mean you have to be successful every single time. Part of execution is learning how to fail yet rising up again. Michael Jordan says this, “I missed more than 9,000 shots in my career and lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions, I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life, and that’s precisely why I succeed.” When you go out to the real world, you will realize that there are many people out there who have great ideas and great plans. And that is good. But like I always tell my team in PLDT, what separates the good from the great is execution. We can spend endless hours and tons of money strategizing, planning, team building, and analyzing to come out with a great plan. But until we execute that plan, that’s all it will ever be, a plan. When something goes wrong in a company, the question the leader or the CEO almost always asks is not, “Who has the best grades?” “Who has a diploma?” “Who has all the awards?” “Who is the summa cum laude?” “Who graduated from an Ivy league school?” The CEO just asks one question: “Who can get the job done?” That, dear graduates is the importance of execution. Let’s learn a lesson from Mickey Mouse. Well, maybe not from Mickey, but from his originator, Walt Disney. Walt had four mantras: dreaming, believing, daring, and then doing. Of the four, “doing” is what turns everything into a reality. Walt said, “Dreaming, believing and daring without doing is just like Dumbo, the elephant, without ears. It just won’t fly. ABRAKADABRA will never work.” Only execution does. Descending to the Top In my UP speech, I talked to them about “what’s better than,” and I juxtaposed what’s better than this versus what’s better than that. Now, all of us want to ascend to the top. No doubt about it. And we should. We should plan on ascending all the way to the top. But I will pose the same question I did three years ago: “What’s better than ascending to the top?” The answer is DESCENDING to the top. That may actually baffle a lot of your minds. “What is he talking about?” “How can descending to the top be better than ascending to the top?” It is a biblical principle. The Bible tells us that he who wishes to be the greatest

At the 93rd Silliman University Commencement Rites, March 26, 2006 must be the servant of all. That is the concept of descending to the top. What I want to share with you is that as you rise to the top, the more you have to be a servant. The keyword is humility. The more you start rising to the top, the more humility needs to become an important place in who you are and in your life. I want to share with you what happened to Steve Jobs the founder of Apple computers and now the Ipod. We all know what a great visionary Steve Jobs is. But if we chronicle his career, Steve Jobs, as he was ascending to the top, as he was rising towards greatness, forgot all about humility. While he was hitting his peak, all he thought about was how great he was, how fantastic he was, and how the world and his company revolved around him. That is ascending to the top. The higher you go, the bigger your head. What happened to Steve Jobs as he hit the peak? He was driven out of his company both in failure and in disgrace. Then after having failed in many other endeavors, he started again and went on to make an indelible mark in the entertainment industry, and with the extraordinary success of the iPod, regained his reputation as the “greatest innovator of the digital age”. And so Steve Jobs, after having ascended to the top and then unceremoniously booted out, now gets the chance to lead Apple again. But something was different about the man this time. People started to feel Steve had changed. And so in a big conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, there he was, listening to the chants of his people, demanding him to come back and run Apple again. Let me share with you how the new Steve answered the call. No longer ascending to the top, but understanding what descending to the top is all about. And I will quote from the book, “Icon: The greatest second act in business”. For the first time in his public life, there on stage, Steve appeared genuinely touched when the people were starting to ask him to come back and take the CEO position. He wasn’t brash or cocky anymore. Maybe his four kids and the complete failure of a company and the near failure of another taught him something. There on stage, he fought back the tears as he mumbled something to make it clear that yes, even Steve Jobs can change. He had made the transition into a world where feelings and passion could partner with business and technology. Steve Jobs said, “You guys are making me feel funny right now. I get to come to work with the most talented people on the planet at Apple and Pixar. The best job in the world! But these jobs are team sports. I cannot do it alone; I can only do it with a team.” A team sport. Fifteen years ago, it would have been a lie. It would have been all about him and how great he was. But now, everything was different. He now understood that it was really the many others who helped him succeed. He did realize it wasn’t all about him. That Apple is a team sport. That is descending to the top - the higher you fly, the lower the ego. If you’re able to get a copy of Time Magazine’s issue where they declared who their Man of the Year was for 2005 you’ll see their choice was Bill Gates. But not because of what Bill Gates has done for Microsoft. Not because he revolutionized the computer industry. But because of what Bill Gates has started to do for humanity. If you read that article, Bill realizes that this is probably the generation where if health care were given enough resources, he can actually make a big difference in millions of people’s lives. And that has become the man’s passion and advocacy, donating billions to uplift the health of poverty stricken nations. This today is what truly defines him; no longer his technological achievements. It is now about serving and helping other people. In other words, descending to the top. A heart for our Country Finally, as you rise to the top you should never lose your heart for our country. I always tell my team in PLDT, that yes, we have a business to run, but let us never forget we also have a country to serve. And that is the same thing I will tell you as you guys rise to the top. You will have businesses to run, you will have your own careers to take care of, and you will have your own dreams to pursue, but never forget you have a country to serve. You may ask, “How? How do I serve the country?” One way is actually quite simple. I’ll give it to you in one word. If you are great, if you are smart, if you are the best, if you have a Silliman education, then, please STAY. Just stay in the country. You would have actually done a great service to our country just by staying. But if you can’t stay, or you don’t want to stay, that’s fine. If you think you want to make it out there in the world, that’s ok with me. But I want to ask two things of you. First, go out there and show the whole world how great the Filipino is. In whatever field you’re in, prove to the world how special we Filipinos truly are. Second, don’t just plan to COME back. Plan to GIVE back to the country. If you do that, if every Filipino who goes out there into the world — and there are millions of us already — proves to everybody how great the Filipino is, and not only plans to come back, but actually plans to give back to this country, in less than one generation, we will be an even greater nation. I will end with what I told the UP students in 2003. You must be asking yourselves, “How do I reach my dreams?” or “How far can I go?” I told them this: In the last 42 years of my life, I have realized one thing, “There is no destination beyond the reach of those who walk with God.” So when you go out there in the world, take God’s hand and walk with him. Because when you do, whatever destination it is you are hoping to reach, if God walks with you and takes you through, there will be no destination beyond your reach. To the graduating class of 2006, I will meet you at the top and nowhere else!

Editorial Tricycles referendum is in order There is a very simple way to resolve the tricycle rates fiasco, at the same time, “hit two birds with one stone.” Let’ the City hold a Tricycles Referendum. This is novel, and it could be a good precedent, and a good record for a working democracy. Let the City Council pass an ordinance to this effect and direct the Traffic Management Office to prepare a list of all duly authorized tricycles to operate in the city and listed on their consecutive numbers, then, on the next column, their authorized driver/s and their operators. On the next column, let them vote YES or NO to Ordinance 88, provided that before voting, they should first comply with all city requirements, and pay all pending fines and penalties. Voting should be through secret ballot. No proxies allowed. Let an enabling ordinance be passed to this effect and state that those who refuse to vote and make a decision, will be deemed to favor the YES vote and be subjected to the increased rates. Secondly, this is another sure way of collecting thousands of pesos in unpaid penalties from tricycle drivers and operators. In this manner, there is now a way by which every one, including the militants, will be able to claim the true sentiment of a popular cause by reflecting on the results of a black-and-white decision which is written on the consensus vote.

beer belly, a receding hairline, inability to play three quarters of basketball and ignorance of names of present-day rock stars and rap artists get me worried.

There’s something about aging that scares the wits of most men. When one starts worrying about age, you can bet your last peso one has crossed middle age. But very few are aware that crossing middle age is perhaps traversing into the rewarding half, the pay-off period. When one asks “What is it all about Alfie?, you too are in the second half of your life. It is calling to find a home inside of you. The first half was all about a great fight for recognition outside of your awards, positions, and all. The second half is finding out the essence of the fighter. Who are we really? Luckily we had this great opportunity to address this search for meaning through the ENNEAGRAM seminar which was studiously carried out by Father Joey de Leon, SJ at the Hotel Intercontinental. It is seminar I recommend for all. The seminar is a step towards knowing your energy, your center and really knowing yourself. It is an important step because if you cannot be yourself, you cannot be to others. You cannot leave behind what you have not entered.

Self-knowledge, as they say, is the beginning of all wisdom. It is this journey to one’s inner core where the discovery, the diagnostic becomes the treatment itself. Mostly trained in the western art of decision-making, we have often intellectualized everything. Yet it is the heart that should choose the real decisions in life – for the head only distorts it. The Westerner who conquers the top of the mountain shouts: I am strong, I made it.” The Easterner would only whisper.” I and the mountain are now one. And both will never be the same because of us.” The analogy may be a little oblique but it states the point. The seminar tells us that people are made up 95 percent of subconscious so that one who cannot grasp his driving forces cannot really be himself. But once you liberate yourself one’s essence, like that in a child, will surface and dominate you. Then there will be no need for masks and pretensions on our lives. You become fully alive and since you are such, the full glory of God is seen. This was the Christian side of the seminar.

Nothing is completely evil in this world, one has to discover the good in it and redeem it. The seminar also speaks of faith and letting go. Desire, Fr. Gray quotes, is the root of misery. Notice how Mr. Middle class suddenly becomes miserable once he compares himself with Mr. Rich who vacations abroad annually. By himself Mr. Middle class was already self-sufficient until he deserved to be Mr. Rich. As Desiderata advises, do not compare yourself with other persons because you will become either proud or miserable for there will always be persons lesser or greater than you are. Once one doesn’t make anything material as a life center, then one learns to let go when it comes, whether it’s title, money or possession. At this point one is truly liberated for only the free can do this. Refer for instance to Barbara Streisand’s hit song called “Some Good Things Never last” which goes: “They say that if you love someone, then set him free. If he comes back `to you, then in the end it was meant to be.”

Of faith, Fr. Joey says, you can conquer any fear – even the fear of seeing who you really are – for the Lord had promised: “My grace is sufficient unto you.” A gem of thought for us who always fret and fuse. “Love and acceptance reveal the essence “ is a seminar quote transformed vividly in the recent

movie Beauty and the Beast, with Beauty loving the Beast beyond his grotesque reality and thereby changing the obnoxious to one of grace. It is present in the firm “Flisher King” where a woman’s positive response to a psychotic’s love offering re

The Holy Blood

I

t was last weekend that I begun a mental journey back in time as the Da Vinci Code (DVC) is fast be coming a hot item amongst believers and non-believers alike. In a few days the movie that depicts the fiction-story will be available to all with a variety of notions, philosophies, designs and understanding. I wish to share mine. As I said in my previous column, the DVC had, in fiction form, demonstrated the human side of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the penultimate and transcendental proof of God’s love and faithfulness to His people. He had to become “flesh” and dwelt among us, yet He is so different from us because of his Divine Power to conquer death by His resurrection. For now, allow this writer to probe more into the probable reasons why the Roman Catholic Church is making a big howl of protest against the reading and viewing of the DVC even as it is merely fiction. When Jesus Christ started his ministry He did not teach salvation in a very sophisticated manner. Jesus’ theology was transmitted to His apostles not by means of steeljacketed catechisms, but rather through parables. He used the language, the idiom or the vernacular that is fitted to the times, persons and places of His ministry. Thus, our Lord and Savior used parables, fictions, tales and allegories as his medium of instruction. He confronted the Pharisees and the legal luminaries of his times, not by legal argumentations, but by revealing through tales the hypocrisy of their self-righteousness. He frontally challenged the LEGALISTIC VIEWS of

those times and he humanly suffered and humanly died for His revolutionary approaches. Those challenges persist until these modern times as the fact of His conquest over death and his resurrection against the forces of darkness remains a mystery even to Christians. To believers, the DVC demonstrated in parable form, that our relationship with God is not some form of secret that is to be found in a nook or corner or leader of a religion, nor in the catechism of a congregation or a church, but rather in the deep recesses of our Hearts and consciousness, and more importantly in our hearts. The queries are: Do we accept our unrighteous, sinful and undeserving character? And if we do, have we engulfed our hearts with the saving grace of the HOLY BLOOD of our Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST who once dwelt amongst us as “flesh”, but unlike us or anybody else, He conquered death to give us eternal life? In the DVC there is an insatiable and gluttonous search of a kind of SECRET that would accordingly, if found, change the course of history and the Opus Dei of the Roman Catholic Church was preventing its discovery or that it will be the one to first take hold of it before anyone does. But as the story would end, the secret is

not a thing that is kept in the bowels of the earth, but rather “the blood” that runs in the veins of the “descendants” of Jesus Christ, who according to the story, has children because he was married to Mary Magdalene. To me, as a believer, the DVC portrayed a parable because true enough the SECRET OF SALVATION is not in the Papacy or in catechisms but rather in the acceptance of the HOLY BLOOD of Jesus Christ as the only cleansing medium and the ONLY WAY of becoming a member of the Family of God and thereby a SON OF GOD. Hence, the supremacy and the infallibility of the Papacy is exhibited as a fallacy instead. You will therefore understand the anxiety and anger that DVC created in the mind of the Vatican and its subordinates. Turn to page 15

BEAUTIFUL GIFTS OF EASTER (Part III) “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!” Luke 24:5-6

inally, in Christ’s giving of himself back to his disciples, they were no longer orphans, but they discovered who they were. Now they had Dr. PROCESO UDARBE identity. Now they realized who they were. Earlier in the death of Jesus, all that they were and hoped for in terms of life’s meaning had been lost to them. The Master, who was all of life’s meaning, had been taken away from them, and it had left them lost even to themselves for they had only known themselves in relation to their Master. I have been talking with an elderly woman whose husband is ill of a debilitating disease. She says they have lived and loved together for so long that she wonders how it will be when he is gone for as she said: “He has given me the meaning of my own life.” In my visits to her husband, he has said essentially the same thing about his wife being life’s meaning for him. In a much deeper sense, this was what Jesus was to those with whom he had associated in Galilee. He had said: “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” And he did come back to Turn to page 10

TODAY’S

GOSPEL Luke 24:35-48

We should pray every day that the Lord will open our minds to the Scriptures. The Scriptures are one of the primary sources of our formation. It is to them we should turn daily to discover the truth about God and His love for us. It is the Scriptures along with Tradition that form the foundation upon which the Church is built. Without them we would be left floundering in a sea of indecision and ignorance. What a tremendous gift the Scriptures are to us. Let us thank God for this gift by reading from them every day! hen the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? Turn to page 12

t. Paul already warned us quite clearly. Those who take their Chris tian faith seriously better be prepared to be humiliated and treated like a laughing stock.

“We have been made a spectacle to the world…we are fools for Christ…we are maligned…we have become as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all.” (1 Cor 4,9-13) Talking about Christ, now as it was then, will always meet some resistance. “For the Jews ask for signs, and the Greeks look for ‘wisdom,’ but we, for our part preach a crucified Christ—to the Jews indeed a stumbling-block and to the Gentiles foolishness.” (1 The usual tack used by most commentators is that we should not be too bothered by this movie, since after all the author of the book on which it based said it’s just fiction. Actually this view amuses me more than piques me. I smell naivete here or a sense of helplessness. It is as if these hardened commentators suddenly become ignorant of the many tricks and gimmicks in this world. What most amused me most was to read a columnist who said that those who are asking for the banning of the movie are actually “weirdos.” Now, wait a minute! Am I now a weirdo? Though I’m too old to be talking about banning and boycotting a movie, I just can not let a movie that satirizes my

Cor 1,22-23) These thoughts came to mind when I was following some commentaries related to the forthcoming showing of the film, “Da Vinci Code.” Yes, dear, we are now in the middle of a media firestorm to hype this controversial movie. So, we just have to activate our critical mind. We cannot be naïve. Times are extremely tricky.

faith, my most intimate treasure, to pass by without me airing some complaint. How would you react if someone approaches you to say the he has just written a book, now being made into a movie, and that he has used your wife or mother as the main character, portraying her as a slut, but that you should not worry because the book is just fiction? If to complain about this development is to be a weirdo, then by all means I am one such weirdo. The problem we have is that many of us are such suckers of any movie and novel that we seem not to mind anymore if there are certain basic values that are being perverted in the process.

Especially if the movie has some action, drama or feelgood themes, or it has some titillating sex scenes, it seems to me that we can just forget about the integrity of our faith. This, in my view, is again another manifestation of addiction and obsession. And I must say this phenomenon is quite widespread. I find this funny, because many people come to me and ask why they have a hard time praying, etc. I also ask them, how many hours do you spend on TV and the DVD? I always find a correlation between more movies and less prayer. We need to discipline ourselves. We need to be more discerning. As I said, I will not talk about banning or boycotting the movie. The nature of the story itself

FR. ROY CIMAGALA should tell us whether it should have been written in the first place, then read and promoted, then filmed and watched. Alas, we expose the real problem we have. It has many layers. Among them, that many of us are so weak we cannot say no to any curiosity that may grip us. Worse, is the crisis of faith that many of us are having, most of the time not even being aware of it. As for me, I remain unrepentant in pursuing my resolution not to read the book, much less to see the film. And I will pray for divine mercy and divine retribution.

Why All the Fuss about Idols?

The strange practice that led to a kingdom’s fall

They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. 17:15 ou cannot read very far in the Old Testament without encounter ing idols, for idolatry ranks as perhaps the most common topic in the Bible. A nagging question haunts these pages: Why did the

Y

Isrealites keep deserting the God who had delivered them from Egypt for the sake of carved tree trunks and bronze statues? What was the big attraction?

Responses to Idols Today

Actually, idols still thrive today, and their effect on the people sheds light on Old Testament idolatry. In India, for example, each city and village has its own favorite god— thousands of different gods are worshipped. Portable idols stand on street corners of the major cities. For devout Hindus, idolatry adds a dimension of magic to life. Hindus believe the gods control all events, including such disasters as monsoons, floods, diseases, and traffic accidents. These powerful gods must be kept happy at all costs. But what pleases a god depends on the god’s character, and gods can be fearsome and violent. Some Indians worship idols in the form of a snake; others worship the smallpox goddess. The largest city in India, Calcutta, has adopted the goddess Kali. Devotion to such gods can easily lead to a paralyzing fear. If Kali isn’t kept happy, her followers believe, she will cruelly punish them. Other Hindus, less devout, take a different approach. They treat their gods almost as good-luck charms. A taxidriver mounts a tiny statue of a monkey god on the dashboard of his car, occasionally draping it with flowers for decoration. If you ask, he’ll say he prays to the god for safety—but you know about the traffic in India, he adds with a laugh. (Next: A Good-Luck Charm or an Evil Cult)

n the first day of May 1971, Bishop Epifanio B. Surban of the Diocese of Dumaguete issued a pastoral letter on the feast of St. Joseph, Patron Saint of the Workers. In it, the Bishop showed a portrait of St. Joseph who “worked as a carpenter so that he could acquire and own the things he needed to feed and clothe (the holy) family and to make them grow in wisdom and grace before God and before men.” As the life of the Saint was “replete with many great lessons,” we are reproducing some pertinent portions of the Bishop’s exhortation below: “Work is the bond that links man to the earth. Through work man perfects himself. Through work man leaves his imprint on the soil. Through work man is enabled to taste the earth’s sweetness. Through work man may possess the earth. Through work man participates in the creative power of God. “Laborers must fulfill certain obligations. Among these duties the following concern the poor and the workers: To perform entirely and conscientiously whatever work has been voluntarily and equitably agreed upon; not in any way to injure the property or harm the person of employers; in protecting their own interests, to refrain from violence and never to engage in rioting; not to associate with vicious men who craftily hold out exaggerated hopes and make huge promises, a course usually ending in vain regrets and Turn to page 9

(From page 8) in destruction of wealth. “The following duties, on the other hand, concern rich men and employers: Workers are not to be treated as slaves; justice demands that the dignity of human personality be respected in them, ennobled as it has been through what we call the Christian character… It is shameful and inhuman to use men as things for gain and to put no more value on them than that they are worth in muscle and energy. Likewise it is enjoined that the religious interests, the spiritual and the cultural well-being of the workers receive proper consideration; not to expose anyone to corrupting influence or the enticement of sin, and in no way to alienate him from care for his family and the practice of thrift. Likewise, more work is not to be imposed than strength can endure, nor that kind of work which is unsuited to a worker’s age or sex. “Among the most important duties of employers, the principal one is to give every worker what is justly due him. Assuredly, to establish a rule of pay in accord with justice, many factors must be taken into account. But, in general, the rich employers should remember that no laws, either human or divine, permit them for their own profit to oppress the needy and the wretched or to seek gain from another’s want.” These lessons got their inspiration from the encyclical letter of Pope Leo XXIII, entitled Rerum Novarum. Though the latter was published in 1890, more than a century ago, these teachings remain the best kept secret of the Catholic Church even in these post-modern times.

Sunday .... From page 8 promise them he would be with them till the end of time. But not only that; they will be known as his friends if they were to love one another, if they were to be fruitful, to have joy in his Presence. What happens when the living Christ takes possession of us? I witnessed years ago a religious service in our church that moved us so much that we were drawn to the front at the altar call. The guest preacher was Dr. Frank Laubach, the missionary who was spending his life in Mindanao to teach Muslims how to read and write. He told us he had his own temptations to go home to his comfortable life in America. In the midst of his spiritual struggle, he would go to Signal Hill in Lanao. One night, as he was deep in prayer, he felt from the depths of his soul, God speaking to him: “Frank, your mission is with these people. Forget about the comfortable life in the U.S.A. I need you here. Here’s where I want you.” Laubach stayed on in Lanao. My friends, the living Christ

Frankly speaking, if that law gives rewards of up to one million pesos we probably would have a few takers. The P100T reward offered by the ordinance is as much a joke as the law itself. The Lajato and the Tumongha killings have now become “cold cases” as far as the PNP is concerned. It is either a case of the PNP “facing a blank wall” again…and again…(as they are fond of saying) or that of being “blindfolded”. Something should be done to prevent our lawmakers making impractical ordinances as it is an utter waste of time and taxpayers’ money. One way to do that is expose their ideas to public opinion before they actually attempt to create an ordinance. The hugely unpopular Dicen ordinance raising tricycle permit fees from P27 to P400 defies common logic. This is another example of a waste of time and money. I don’t know why the Dumaguete public bothered to elect him to office if they don’t like the way he thinks. Have a nice day! *** does speak our name. He gives us identity and a task to do. 61st Liberation Day of Dumaguete City

A

pril 26, 1945 marked the liberation of Dumaguete from the Japanese occupation; and this year, the Veterans, their families, the city and province celebrated the 61st liberation day on April 26, 2006. If you walk along the main pathway of the City park, you will see a simple Liberation Marker that carries a very eloquent message. The Marker writes: ON THE 26TH DAY OF APRIL, 1945 DUMAGUETE WAS LIBERATED BY A COMPOSITE FORCE OF FILIPINO GUERILLAS (75TH AND 77TH INFANTRY REGIMENTS) AND UNITS OF THE 164YH REGIMENT, AMERICAN DIVISION, 8TH ARMY, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The second world war seemed so far away in time, and the new generation does not remember the hardships of the Dumaguete residents under the Japanese occupation. It was a difficult time for all; food was scarce, the invading forces were vicious, and all freedom was lost.

Surrender ceremony – Col. S. Oie (right turns over his Samurai to Col. F. Wilson (left, of the U.S. Army, 503rd Airborne Division.

Though I was born years after the war, I remember the war time stories from my parents, as my father would reminisce about the hardships everyone endured during the war years. Many Dumaguetenos fled the City; my parents, together with relatives and neighbors hid in Datag, Siaton with the Taykos. My mother talked of diseases and deaths of children and adults from lack of food and medicines; she herself lost her firstborn because there was no medicine for simple fever. Many Dumaguetenos must have stories to tell about the horrors of war and the pain and suffering under the Japanese forces. We can only speculate how they survived a brutal war. It is so fitting then, that Liberation Day be remembered with gratitude for the courage and heroism of the guerillas and soldiers who fought against the Japanese forces. If there were no resistance groups or liberating forces then, I wonder how the history of Dumaguete would be written?

This article is dedicated to the brave soldiers and their families who stood up against the enemy forces, and we join their children in remembering them, living and dead. May the young remember that the freedom they so take for granted now was paid with blood and suffering of many. During the celebration last April 26, 2006 at the Quezon Park, flower offerings were made by the government and private sectors; the celebration was a fitting tribute to the Veterans, surviving spouses, sons and daughters of the he Veterans. May it be a comfort to them to know that Dumaguetenos remember the sacrifice their fathers made. No greater sacrifice can a man make than lay his life for his country. My thanks to Mr. Andrey Tumulak, City Public Information Officer, who shared pictures and information with me.

cows come home. It would not make a difference anymore. The president has already exercised her authority to commute the death sentence of those doomed by final judgment and were supposed to be on deck for execution. —————————— There will be no more execution by lethal injection or whatever for the socalled ‘death convicts’. At least during the term of Pres. Arroyo. This one is final and definite. —————————— Our greatest apprehension, however, is that considering man’s inhumanity to man, the death penalty may be meted out not anymore inside the lethal injection chamber but somewhere else – in time and place where the laws of God and man are thrown to the winds.

GOSPEL

(From page 8) And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”

Make-do Pier terminal?

Despite the PPA’s promise of building a modern P60-million passenger terminal in the reclaimed area fronting the coast guard station, the PPA is currently renovating this old (see foto above) dilapidated passenger terminal which was an old donation of the Lions Club in the 1960s.

Will this be it?

W

hat discom fort will it give the 21st century passenger? Will our City and Provincial leaderships intervene if they are indeed interested in developing tourism in this part of the country? Visitors and tourists need to be comfortable if we have to be hospitable. Good for our city and pro-

vincial officials, they usually take the plane . They cannot feel the discomfort now plaguing our sea travelers. And where are now our self-proclaimed environmentalists? Are they happy leaving poor sea passengers soaked in rain and roasted under the heat of the sun? Is this not a grave destruction of this human specie? Marine life first, and

man, later? What is the future of sea travel in Dumaguete ports? Reports say that the PPA office will merge with the regional office in Bohol or Cebu, leaving only a skeletal staff in the Dumaguete office. Any congressman , mayor or governor in sight who will intervene?

What makes Meniong feel young at 86?

Certainly not his dancing with this Manila-based belly dancer who danced in a party to celebrates his 86th birthday, but positive thinking, staying focused, and a lot of golf and family bonding.

“Executive Privilege” - A Myth

A

s early as 1974, Professor Raoul Berger, an authority on American constitutional law, in his work “EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE: A Constitutional Myth”, stated that the U.S. President’s claim of constitutional authority to withhold information from Congress is a “myth”. He further said that unlike most myths, the origins of which are lost in the mists of antiquity, “executive privilege” is a product of the nineteenth century, fashioned by a succession of presidents who created “precedents” to suit their purpose. Executive privilege is therefore purely based on “precedents” set by strong-willed presidents of the United States. It has no constitutional basis. The expression “executive privilege” is not found in any provision of the U.S. Constitution. The doctrine of “executive privilege” is resurrected by President GMA’s boys who want to put a “monkey wrench” on the full implementaEXTRA-JUDICIAL SETTLEMENT OF ESTATE AND QUITCLAIM NOTICE is hereby given that the heirs of the late CRESCENCIO TAN have filed and executed an Extra-Judicial Settlement of Estate and Quitclaim on a parcel of land (Lot 4, Block 4 of the Subdivision Plan, Psd29814, being a portion of Lot 1592-B described on plan, Psd 26668), situated in the City of Dumaguete Island of Negros. H o w e v e r , Malacañang advisers must realize that just as the President has the duty of informing Congress on the State of the Nation, cabinet members and other executive officials have the duty of informing Congress on the state of affairs in their own departments. As aptly stated by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of U.S. vs. Nixon, “no branch is entirely master in its own house. Each branch is subject to checks and balance from the others, and separation of powers depends on interaction not isolation”. In this country, the doctrine of executive privilege has come to “symbolize the troubled relations between Congress and the President and to identify their points of sharpest conflicts.”

BROTHERS’ KEEPER is a section which features the faces of the needy. Donations are welcome, it maybe sent directly to the patient in the hospitals, or thru the CHRONICLE office. In foto is ROMEO ADLAWON, 3yrs old, hospitalized for hydrocephalus since March 31, son of a poor fisherman . He needs P12,000 for his operation. Location, Provincial Hospital.

heinous crimes are covered , and not others which are self-promulgated by some elements of the judiciary. On the local level, seven of the fourteen aggrupation of tricycle drivers have join the mass call for the repeal of Ordinance 88 which mandates sky rocketing fees of tricycle fees and their franchise and renewal fees. One group wants the total repeal, while some segments of the city council wants the mere abolition of the trust fund in which increased fees were to be collected as loan funds to members. The big question here concerns those who are not members of any tricycle association who can be deprived of the benefits, whose seed money, they area also required to pay, yet not benefit from it..

Delinquent ... From page 1 help improve our health program. This offer is only for 16 provinces which have institutionalized “an innovative and sustainable health program.” Tempting offer, but at the rate people are not paying their taxes on time and politicians un-able to force the collection maybe for fear of losing votes in the next election, are contributory factors to the rising poverty in our province and elsewhere. This could be the same story in other provinces. Must a grant be offered to push our government officials to collect over-due taxes? Can’t people see where their taxes are going? Or would the growing desire for federalization be the cause of this delinquency? The money, if granted in P90-M cash , is to be used to continue the purchase of medicine for such sustainable health program which has gained accolade for the province. Hey, province, go for it ! Just try!—nothing to lose, but everything to gain.

Life, freedom ... From page 2 doubt by the judge will surely acquit the accused because as the good judge said and quoting the Supreme Court: “Even though the accused’ innocence ,may be doubted, but since the constitutional right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty can only be overthrown by proof beyond reasonable doubt,….he must be acquitted.” Judge Tan also cited the equipoise rule which states that when there is doubt as to which side the evidence preponderates, the party having the burden of proof (the arresting policemen ) loses. So policemen must first MASTER the art of making perfect, legal and flawless arrests, otherwise, acquittals like this, might only be misconstrued as the cops’ indirect way of perpetuating the drug menace.

who is PFC Renante Samrana, was promoted one rank higher, for his bravery in leading his men and defending their fort in not being taken over by the NPA attack. Instead, they killed eight attackers. Word from President Arroyo came, congratulating the bravery of the Cafgu units, and commended the mother unit which is the 303rd Army Brigade under Maj Gen Jerry Jalandoni. Under him is the 11th Infantry under Col Jessi Manaquel and the 61st Infantry under Col Norman Flores.

The Holy ... From page 7 Indeed the SECRET that is found in the “BLOOD LINE OF JESUS” will change the course of history because it shakes and weakens the foundations of the Roman Catholic Church as the gradual revelation of the TRUTH will certainly bring freedom and enlightenment towards a transformational faith in God that knows no bounds. “Have faith in God, Jesus answered. I tell you the truth, if anyone says to the mountains, ‘go throw yourself into the sea’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him”, Mark 11:2223. In God’s light we see our unholiness, sinfulness and folly. But that is never all that we see. We also see God’s provision in Christ’s Holy Blood that empowers our faith to accept his saving grace and the welcome of his embrace so that in the end of our life’s journey it will be our portion to hear from Him the words; “well done my good and faithful servant, enter now into the joy of my kingdom”.

Recovered from the scene of the encounter were Communist flags, an upper receiver of an M-16; hand grenade, one rifle, a dud grenade, one round M203dud, Assorted ammo of calibers .45, 5.56 and 7.62 empty

critical repor ting reporting

HOW MEDIA SEES IT, AND NOT OTHERS (From page 2) when we were at the helm of media’s frontlines, I saw colleagues of mine being dragged out of their homes after that infamous 2am-knock-at-your-doors. We literally fought media clamp down in Dumaguete. WHAT HAPPENED. I was the anchor of “Dumaguete Tonight” premier public affairs program of Silliman’s-DYSR 10,000-watts strong then and stereo-AM sound. While all stations nationwide were closed, DYSR was not, and I anchored the morning show on Sept. 22, 1972 as people here called up, talked openly. The provincial commander, the late Col Noli Santua, did not intervene. DYSR was the only station on air on Sept. 22. (ANNOUNCING: The return of : “Dumaguete Tonight” over ENERGY FM DYEM, 8:30pm, soon. With the advent of global cyber technology, we will be giving the public wider and more comprehensive coverage of the latest events and public affairs. Already, our reliable, durable panel of reactors have signified to join its return, and we have also formed a new fresh young breed of broadcast journalists to handle the news department. ABANGAN!) People like Sal Erames, Danny Martinez, Joe Montebon (*), Joe Ancheta, Nene Teves, Ben Villarin(*), Mars Maxino, even the late Gov Nene Perdices(*), went on air to denounce Martial Law here on its first day. Col Santua was my on-air guest. Finally at midnight on Sept. 22, 1972 we bade our audience good-bye. An order from Malacanang arrived directing the PC to padlock DYSR. To make a long history short, when DYSR reopened six months later, it had a caveat : re-open DYSR but fireEly Dejaresco, an order hand-carried by then palace strong woman Keriman Polutan-Tuvera. And painfully DYSR management did. That’s how we parted ways. And as they say,— the rest is history.

WHAT CLAMP DOWN?

So what do these young breed of journalists know about being dragged to jail 2am in the morning, dumped in a large gym at SU , lying on the floor on mats for weeks, cleaning comfort rooms of the jails, being hit by an armalite butt, thrown to prison mixed with criminals, and worse: never charged with any crime. Released unceremoniously. Dodong M can attest to that. The so-called media clamp down today is nothing compared to how Marcos did it. The only stupidity was that they raided the Tribune, a poorly-circulated broadsheet, which turned out to be an overnight media hero. Simply stupid act of government. They should have raided the Inquirer or ABS-CBN studios. But no, there was not any media clamp down of Marcos standard that happened in 1017. Besides, personally, knowing PGMA as a staunch anti-Marcos militant (Marcos cheated Dado Macapagal in the ’65 elections, remember?) she will never do a Marcos. If ever she does, that is her waterloo. She will be finished if she does a Marcos. So just forget it. She won’t , if only for her own survival.

shells of 203, one nokia charger, two backpacks, cooked rice one magazine for Ml6 marked “mike.” The usual blocking force from other detachments were ordered even as the possibility of another attack could be eminent considering that the rebels lost more lives than those of the government. MEANWHILE, the army is alerting itself and other smaller PNP stations in the Negros area of another retaliatory attacks from the rebels which could come even today or tomorrow, Labor Day. Easily targeted as soft spots are lowly police stations in lowly towns. But with the advent of cell phones, even civilians will be reporting via cell phones to the authorities once there is an NPA activity in their areas.

What’s it all ... From page 4 deemed his mental imbalance away from the cliff. What is essential is always invisible to the eyes as your favorite Little Prince would say. These were the philosophical aspects of the seminar. In practical terms it taught us that all men belong to nine different personality types whether we like it or not. The personal awakening as to what type we belong to is cruel, rude and final – but it is a necessary first step to selfknowledge. As we cross the dangerous middle-age line, we are reminded of our symbolic Alfie with question like: “What’s it all about Alfie? Is it just for the moment we live? Are we meant to take more than we give? Or are we meant to be kind? And if only fools are kind, Alfie, Then I guess it is wise to be cruel. And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie, What will become of the old golden rule? The cynics may say: “The poor think of abroad, the rich philosophize.” To them I say “Go play Rap Music” as the Last Boy Scout would retort.
