Welcome to the RGS MUSIC Scholarship Programme

What It Means to Be aN RGS Scholar

Scholars contribute actively to school life. They lead, perform, compete, create, mentor, and inspire. In return, they receive tailored support, enrichment, and recognition.

EVERY SCHOLAR’S JOURNEY IS UNIQUE AND PERSONAL

Our Scholarship & Talent Development Programme is designed to recognise and nurture student talent in the arts, sport, leadership, academics and beyond.

Rooted in the values of Commitment, Growth and Excellence , our scholars become part of a culture that celebrates talent and supports ambition in a community where every child belongs, and every voice matters.

We are proud to offer a structured, supportive, and aspirational programme that rewards dedication as much as natural ability. All our scholars, across every discipline, share the same values:

Commitment – showing up, putting in the effort, and supporting others.

Growth – having a mindset that embraces challenge and progress.

Excellence – striving for the highest standards.

Nurturing Commitment. Supporting Growth. Inspiring Excellence.

VISION AND CORE VALUES

Music at RGS is expressive, collaborative and full of opportunity. As a Music Scholar, you will develop both skill and confidence through performance, rehearsal and shared musical experiences. The programme values dedication just as much as ability, and encourages musicians to contribute positively to the life of the school. Through this culture of commitment, leadership and enjoyment of music, scholars grow as performers and as people.

RGS MUSIC: BE INSPIRED

Music Scholars at RGS enjoy an exceptional breadth of opportunity, both on the external stage and in school. Performances range from informal lunchtime recitals to major concerts in professional venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, Leatherhead Theatre, Guildford Cathedral and St Paul’s Cathedral. The programme also offers access to world-class musicians through masterclasses and guest-led workshops. Highlights have included choral sessions with Bob Chilcott and instrumental coaching from Andy Panayi, David Owen Norris and Crispian Steele-Perkins. The newly launched Young Musician of the Year competition has brought a fresh energy to the department, with this year’s final judged by renowned soprano Susan Gritton. Looking ahead, scholars will perform in a special concert at Glyndebourne, a new addition to a musical calendar that continues to grow. Students are supported and encouraged to develop techniques, discover new repertoire and perform in professional settings surrounded by inspiration and a culture of excellence.

LIFE of A MUSIC scholar

RGS is different to other schools. A scholarship at RGS is an invitation, not a burden or a set of conditions. It is a recognition of potential and a chance to grow with support, encouragement and a culture of excellence. Our Music Scholars are young musicians with promise, passion and a love of music. They are encouraged to take advantage of the rich musical life of RGS through choirs, instrumental ensembles, solo opportunities, workshops, masterclasses, tours and trips. Scholars frequently find themselves involved in our busy calendar of concerts and school occasions, sharing their music with others and growing in confidence. We simply ask that families support their child’s musical journey, helping them make the most of what is on offer. Music scholars are free to explore a variety of genres and interests, and may develop new passions over time. Our specialist staff are here to provide expert guidance, personalised support and plenty of inspiration to help each musician grow at their own pace.
