Welcome to summer at Revitalise! We would like to help more of you than ever to have break you need and the holiday you deserve
We love to hear from guests about the wonderful experiences they have at our centres. We learn of friendships formed and old friends reunited, of new experiences people have and of favourite pastimes they’ve rediscovered. But we are keenly aware that a break with Revitalise is more than just a bit of fun. For many of the people who stay with us – and their carers – respite breaks are the di erence between being able to cope and reaching breaking point. Yet every week we hear from guests whose local authority funding is being cut, leaving them feeling isolated.
That’s why we have launched our Give Me a Break campaign. Please use the postcard enclosed to add your voice and ask your MP to protect funding for respite care, and join us on our mission to fund another 100 breaks each year for the next three years for people who really need one. Find out more on pages 8 and 9
I do hope that you will be able to join us this year. Revitalise o ers guests a real holiday experience – see what Abi and Olly have to say on pages 4 and 5, and get a taste of our activities and trips on pages 6 and 7. If you need a mental break right now, why not try our puzzle on page 13? You might even win a short holiday!
I hope you enjoy reading our magazine. Please help us to reach more disabled people and carers by passing your copy on to a friend or placing it in your local GP reception area, library or co ee shop.
Warmest regards,
Jan

Our cover star Abi Andrews, a regular visitor to our Sandpipers centre, explains why her Revitalise breaks bring her so much joy
YOU’VE HEARD the saying that “laughter is the best medicine” and it’s certainly true for many of our guests at Revitalise. For Abi Andrews, a regular guest at our Sandpipers centre near Southport, Merseyside, even short breaks away from her routine at home give her and her family a li that improves their mental and physical wellbeing. Abi describes the joy that comes from her visits: “Having a good time, going out, being with my friends, le ing my hair down and doing fun activities. And laughing.”
Book your next Revitalise break today – see back pages for the latest discounts and more details
Abi is a survivor of childhood cancer, and the illness and its treatment le her with a lifetime of poor health and frequent hospital admissions. Treatment meant that she didn’t go through puberty, so she sounds and looks young, which means that people meeting her for the first time sometimes underestimate her. When she comes to Revitalise, though, she can be herself and forget her worries. “I’ve been coming here for a while, so I’ve built up a relationship with many of the staff. I know that I’m looked a er, my mum knows that I’m being looked a er and having fun, and that I’m safe.”
Despite her sunny outlook, Abi admits that away from her breaks, she’s not always able to see the bright side of life, but staying at Sandpipers helps her rediscover her inner joy. “Going to Revitalise combats my severe depression and sometimes I suffer from unhealthy, negative thoughts,” she says. “Coming here, I can leave all that behind me, I meet my friends, go on trips, have a lot of banter with staff and volunteers, and the other guests.”
The break from care helps Abi’s parents stay on top of things. “If I’m having a bad day and my carer isn’t around, one of my parents has to stay at home or they sometimes drag me round with them, which isn’t good for any of us,” she says. “[A Revitalise break] just enables them to recharge and look a er me and it gives them an opportunity to have some time away from me. They might catch up on housework or some home improvements. Or they might have some time off themselves and get away. They just have some time out for themselves.”
Abi enjoys taking trips and letting her hair down when she comes to our Sandpipers centre
When Sandpipers guest Ian checked in for a break last April, he was in for a welcome surprise in the form of an old friend, Jim, who lives at the other end of the country! Ian says: “What are the chances of us both booking our respite at the same place and on the same date when Jim lives way down in Weston-Super-Mare in the South-West and I live way up north in Garstang, Preston?”
Our Sandpipers centre o ered guest Olly a taste of how accessible holidays should be when he came to stay after completing his MA in Business at Edge Hill University. Olly was waiting for more permanent accommodation with assisted living, but in the meantime he made the most of our facilities and loved his experience. “It’s like a hotel but the amenities gave me the freedom to go where I wanted, when I wanted,” he says.
Olly has pushed himself at university, and says that the flexible approach

there and access to a scribe helped him through exams. He is a fervent advocate for disability equality and plans to study towards a PhD in football and disability, and he hopes to make a career in disability advocacy. When it comes to travel, though, he says there is a long way to go to make those with extra needs feel welcome.
“There’s no wheelchair spaces on planes, meaning it’s hard to travel,” he says. “It’s too painful to sit on a plane seat and I have to limit what I am eating for 24 hours beforehand because I can’t get to the toilet. On one trip, my wheelchair was put on the carousel so I couldn’t physically get o the plane. I want to lobby the aviation industry to make flying more accessible so that I and others like me can travel more.”
In contrast, Olly’s experience at Sandpipers paints a di erent picture. Our centres boast wide corridors,
“I used to know Jim when I lived in the South but I then retired to the North. We do stay in touch on Facebook but we never spoke about our disabilities or our respite.”
adapted bedrooms and bathrooms, wheelchair-friendly minibuses and a 24-hour care team.
Have you had di culty travelling abroad? Disability Rights UK has joined forces with TV presenter Sophie Morgan to demand that the Government gives the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) the powers to fine airlines if they don’t look after disabled passengers and their equipment. Revitalise breaks are a vital lifeline for disabled people and their families. That’s why we’re fighting to protect funding for respite, to make sure people like you can a ord the break you need
WE
GOVERNMENT to ensure that vital respite is properly funded. And, to ensure that respite funding receives specific protection so that it cannot be withdrawn from those who need it. We're asking you to join us in calling on all local MPs to do what they can to protect respite funding in their constituency. Please use the postcard enclosed with this magazine –which you can send for free – to add your voice to our campaign.
WE ALL NEED
A BREAK, an opportunity to recharge and take time out for ourselves. But for thousands of unpaid family carers and the disabled people they support, this is out of reach.
Under the Care Act, local authorities have a duty to support family carers by enabling them to take breaks from their caring responsibilities. In practice, this rarely happens.
There are 5 million unpaid carers in England and Wales, and around two thirds of them provide over 50 hours of care a week. Yet only one in 129 carers are ge ing support with respite. And every week we hear from our guests that the funding they have had until now is being withdrawn. Without it, most simply cannot afford a break.
This is unacceptable and is why we are calling for change
ABI'S STORY
Like many of our guests, our cover star Abi’s stays at Revitalise are only possible with the right funding. Abi has annual assessments to see if she meets the criteria for help from her local authority. “I worry about it all the time,” she says. “It frightens
me when I hear from others in my situation about local authority cuts and thinking is that going to be me?”
Losing her funding would be devastating. “Life wouldn’t be worth living for me and my family. I need that break from my parents and they wouldn’t be able to cope without a break from looking a er me.”
Muneeba and Yusuf shared their story on Channel 4 News. Yusuf, 23, has Down’s syndrome and complex learning difficulties and lives at home. Like most people his age, Yusuf wants to get out, meet people and have fun. Yet the lack of respite care has become a real barrier, with services disappearing when he became an adult.
For Muneeba, the ba le to advocate and secure the funding Yusuf needs is endless – for every small victory, new bureaucratic
hoops appear. This has had a huge impact on Muneeba. “You put your face on in the morning, and you make the best of it,” she says. “You come home and you crumble.
“It is also so important for Yusuf to have that time away. A er three days’ respite at Jubilee Lodge, he comes home so much happier.”
HAJ’S STORY
Haj developed MS in his early 30s, when he was a new husband and father. “My life has changed dramatically,” he says. “I had to give up my job and although I still have regular contact with my teenage son, we don’t share a home. I have a close-knit family but I spend a lot of time on my own.”
“My holidays at Revitalise are something to look forward to but they are also a source of stress as I wait anxiously to see whether any funding will become available.”
Last year, Haj helped to put together the programme for Diwali Week, but he almost couldn't come along, having to secure most of the funding for his place himself. “At one point, having done so much to create the week, I was uncertain that I’d make it.”
HAS YOUR FUNDING BEEN CUT OR REFUSED? WOULD YOU SHARE YOUR STORY?
Our Give Me A Break campaign aims to amplify the voices of disabled people and carers. Eleven Revitalise guests shared their story on TV in the past year. We’re hoping to do even better this Summer. If you have been a ected by local authority cuts, we’d love to hear from you. Just email us on info@revitalise.org.uk

So many people tell us that they haven’t had any kind of break for over a year. In 2023, we provided over £100,000 worth of funding to support breaks. But we need to do more. This year, we want to raise a further £100,000 to provide even more breaks to people who desperately need them.
So, we are challenging our amazing supporters to help us. Every £500 raised would help give someone a break. You could hold a coffee morning, organise a quiz or set yourself a challenge, or simply make donation. Find out more by visiting www.revitalise.org.uk/ support-us or phoning 0303 303 0145.
• The Joan Brander Fund provides financial support to disabled people and their carers to take their first holiday with us
• Most of our new guests come through personal recommendation. If you have already stayed with us, you can get £200 o your next holiday when you refer a friend. He or she will also benefit from a £200 discount on their holiday.
• We run a number of special o ers throughout the year, so be on the lookout for lastminute deals or our Early Bird launch in September.
• If you book early, you can spread out the cost of your holiday. Once you have paid your deposit to confirm the booking, you have up until six weeks before the start of your break to pay the remaining balance.
• Thanks to the generosity of several veterans’ charities, we are able to provide substantial funding to former services personnel
Our volunteers bring the magic that makes every break so memorable
BEHIND EVERY holiday with Revitalise is a team of volunteers who help to give our guests and their families the break they deserve. Each year we rely on an army of over 3,000 volunteers from all walks of life, not just in our centres but in our shops and even our head office. Ours is one of the biggest residential
Volunteering as a Guest Ambassador at our Jubilee Lodge centre has helped Neil not only to make a huge difference to the holiday experiences of his fellow guests, but also to rebuild his own skills and confidence
“I’ve been Jubilee Lodge’s Guest Ambassador for just over a year. I’ve helped host an evening reception at the Houses of Parliament, been interviewed on the radio and by the BBC and represented Revitalise with local charities and at many events.
“As the founder of Phab Club Mike’s Den in Harlow, I’ve been actively involved in forging a partnership between Revitalise and Phab [find out more on page 12]. Phab is a national charity with over 150 clubs nationwide that brings together individuals with and without disabilities, fostering friendships and creating enjoyable experiences. We want to establish a Phab Club in close proximity to Jubilee Lodge so that guests can join in the fun while on holiday and Phab Club members can explore all that Jubilee Lodge has to offer.
“Along with my close friend and fellow guest Dave, I have been working towards establishing a volunteer fundraising team dedicated to supporting Jubilee Lodge. We’ve already got some projects in mind,
including creating a new garden at the centre.
“Having been a guest at Jubilee Lodge for over 20 years, it’s been great to give back to a charity that helped restore my confidence all those years ago after my disability meant that I had to give up my job as a nurse. I used the free will service a couple of years ago, and have included a legacy for Revitalise so that others can enjoy a holiday in the future.”

The amazing Carla is described by her team as “a breath of fresh air” and “an exceptional human being”. Carla began volunteering last spring and always goes the extra mile for the rest of the team and the customers. She says: “I work hard and I love what I do. I get to be creative. I know some think it’s just volunteering but it’s given me a whole new mindset and given me my confidence back. I have an amazing team of women around me who I cherish dearly. If you’re looking to do something with your spare time, I one million per cent recommend volunteering!”

Meet some of the amazing people who help to make our holidays so memorable
Revitalise wouldn’t get by without more than a li le help from our friends.
Guests, fundraisers, marathon runners, shop volunteers, local charities, businesses and supermarkets all support us by raising money to help keep the lights on and provide essential funding for those who could not otherwise afford a break.
We were thrilled to be featured as the nominated charity in Debbie-Lyn’s Inclusive Fashion event last February. Debbie-Lyn’s Inclusive Apparel Brand, known for promoting diversity, showcased a range of designs, breaking down traditional barriers.
Last year, Southport’s Lakeside Runners organised a sponsored run around the Marine Lake facing our Sandpipers centre. They’re continuing their fundraising efforts this year, holding a lively 5th Birthday Bash: A Night of Fun and Fundraising at Sandpipers on
26 April, and you’re invited. Call our bookings team for details.
We’ve got a lot in common with our friends at Phab. Phab Clubs are places to belong, and places to thrive where disabled and nondisabled people come together to socialise, have fun and build lifelong friendships. There are over 100 of them throughout England and Wales. Phab members get special discounts on our holidays and we’ve teamed up with them at a number of events. Find a Phab club near you by visiting the website at phab.org.uk

Luke ran the 2023 London Marathon in memory of his mum
Good luck to our 40 runners in the London Marathon this April! They include two MBA students, Gokul and Siddharth from our partners, Cranfield University.
One of last year’s runners, 31-year-old Luke from Woodford, says: “I ran in memory of my mum, who had died the previous year. Running the marathon was the most surreal and amazing experience of my life, and I would recommend it to anyone. What Revitalise does for disabled people and their carers is amazing and I couldn’t think of a be er charity to run for.” We’d also like to thank Jessica, cousin of regular guests, brothers Tom and Will, who is running the Manchester Marathon to raise funds.

• 500g beef mince – the best quality you can find
• ½ small red onion very finely diced
• 1 garlic clove
• 1 tsp mustard
• 1 tsp Mexican spice mix (or a mixture of chilli flakes, oregano, salt and pepper)
• Egg yolk (small)
• Burger buns
For the relish and sauce
• ½ small red onion
• 10 cherry tomatoes
• 1 small avocado
• 1 lime
• splash of oil
• handful of fresh coriander
• salt & pepper to taste
• Mix a splash of peri peri sauce with 4 tbs of mayonnaise for the sauce
1 Squish all the burger ingredients together in a bowl and shape into burgers. Put aside in the fridge to firm up. You might not need all the egg yolk, so add in about two thirds and see how it feels. Heat up your grill – outdoor or indoors – and then cook to taste using a griddle pan. Poke a knife into the middle of one of the burgers to make sure it is cooked through.
place into a bowl. Chop the coriander and add to the bowl together with juice squeezed from the lime and a splash of oil. Add the peri peri sauce to the mayonnaise in a separate bowl.
2 Slice the remaining half onion, dice the avocado and cut the cherry tomatoes in half (or quarters if they are large) and
Ingredients
• 350g chocolate
• 500g double cream, whipped
• 4 tbs caster sugar
• ½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Method
1 Put the chocolate into a microsafe bowl and then microwave in short bursts, stirring between bursts until about three-quarters of the chocolate is melted. Stir vigorously.
2 Taking a clean paint brush, ‘paint’ the bottom and sides of some silicon cups with the chocolate. Repeat at least three times. Leave to one side and when partially set, place in the fridge for at least 15 mins.
3 Whisk the cream, sugar, and vanilla extract (if using) and pipe into the chocolate cups.
4 Decorate however you wish. Debbie likes to use Maltesers, half a strawberry and silver icing
3 Place the burgers into the buns and top with the salsa and peri peri mayonnaise.
