HEART BEAT

WELCOME WELCOME

Dear Colleagues

Welcome to the summer edition of Heartbeat!

This season always brings out the best at our centres, and this year is no different. Guests are enjoying a marvellous time with fun, food and exciting excursions to popular tourist destinations. Thank you to our colleagues for working hard and making these summer holidays memorable for our guests.

Our Give me a break campaign launched with a bang at Trafalgar Square. We are proud of the impact the campaign is making and thankful to our long-time supporter Rory Kinnear and other media outlets for lending voice to our cause.

Our Have Your Say 2024 colleague survey will be launching in a few weeks, and we are looking forward to hearing your thoughts on being a part of the Revitalise family.

Best wishes and bye for now,

What’s on at Sandpipers

We had a lovely weather in the north that was enjoyed by all. Our guests particularly enjoyed the fluffy goslings that visited us on the Marine Lake each morning.

The most eventful week so far was our All Out Americana week, where guests enjoyed a vibrant and unforgettable celebration of American culture. With cowboy hats and stars and stripes, the atmosphere was electric. Guests especially enjoyed grooving to the Elvis Presley tribute, fully embracing the spirit of the week.

Sandpipers nominated for Inclusive Employer award

This award reflects our team’s ongoing dedication to nurture an environment that’s inclusive and welcoming to our guests, volunteers and colleagues. We’re grateful to Southport College for this recognition and their continued partnership. Here’s to building a more inclusive and accessible future, together!

What’s on at Jubilee Lodge

Jubilee Lodge hosted an incredible Youth Week this July, bringing together guests, volunteers and colleagues for an unforgettable experience.

Throughout the week, guests enjoyed a variety of activities, including lively games, a thrilling water fight and a vibrant colour run that showcased everyone’s creativity. Everyone also enjoyed a delicious barbecue, sharing good food and great conversations.

We are also thrilled to report that the Jubilee Lodge refurbishment is complete and the centre looks impressive! All guest bedrooms have received a stunning refurbishment, enhancing both aesthetics and accessibility for our guests. The upgrades have created a modern and inviting atmosphere, truly transforming the experience at Jubilee Lodge.

Guests have been enthusiastic with the developments and have given positive feedback about the improvements.

Jubilee Lodge Summer Fete

Don’t miss our upcoming summer fete at Jubilee Lodge on Sunday, 7th September! With a barbecue station, local vendors, a live band and free admission, this is sure to be a day of fun for the whole community.

Give me a break

We launched this year’s Give me a break Campaign in Trafalgar Square on 12 June during Carer’s Week. We laid out 129 deckchairs, including a gold one painted by Bobby Hollick, to illustrate that only 1 in 129 unpaid family carers are getting respite support.

The campaign was covered by Sky News, where our CEO Jan Tregelles and guest Stephen and his aunt Marie, were interviewed by presenter Kay Burley. GB News also covered the campaign interviewing guest Yusuf and his mother Muneeba at Jubilee Lodge. The standout of the campaign was an opinion piece in The Guardian by the actor and playwright, and Revitalise supporter, Rory Kinnear.

The newly formed team focused on rebuilding the trusts and foundations pipeline and generating vital funding that can be used to subsidise our breaks. Best result so far is a £30,000 grant towards developing our offer to veterans!

Every grant the team secures adds to the pot that can be used to provide funding for our guests facing challenging financial times. In the coming months, the team will be working on building the pipeline, promoting Give me a break to potential grant makers and identifying supporters to underwrite our special Youth Weeks.

Supporter and Community Fundraising

The Supporter Fundraising team is off to a flying start this summer! Our Give me a break Appeal has already raised over £8,000 thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters.

We’ve been blown away by the interest in next year’s London Marathon. We have a record number of enquirers, including five of our very own Revitalise colleagues. We’re so proud of their commitment to the cause! Finally, a warm welcome to our newest team member, Emma Nelson! Emma is already hard at work developing exciting plans to support challenge events, in-memory giving, individual and regular donations and legacies.

The shocking attack at a children’s holiday activity, and the subsequent protests, had a profound effect on all of us. The Sandpipers Fete was cancelled and we reduced our brand presence at the 10k run on 4 August.

We’re looking forward to some exciting events in the autumn including a big fundraiser being organised by the Lakeside runners.

Marketing & Sales Team

A huge welcome to Martin Perkins who takes over from Emily Sheardown as Sales & Reservations Manager and Emily O’Keefe who joins our sales and bookings team.

Emily Sheardown has a new role developing partnerships and supporting fundraising volunteers.

We are working with Help for Heroes and other Armed Forces charities to offer our holidays to disabled veterans and their families.

Savvy and stylish summer shoppers in Wickham!

Spotlight on Wickham Shop

Our team at the Wickham charity shop prepared a captivating display to celebrate the Wickham Music Festival. The display featured themed clothes, accessories and items to capture the spirit of the festival and draw in music lovers from the community.

Have Your Say 2024

The People and Culture Team is currently planning our bi-annual ‘Have Your Say’ employee survey which will go out to all colleagues in the autumn.

The purpose of running the survey is to find out what we all think and feel about being an employee at Revitalise and covers every area of your experience.

COMING SOON!

The survey is completely anonymous and takes around 2030 minutes to complete. You will receive time during your working day to do so. Every submission helps make Revitalise an even better place to work!

We ran our first ‘Have Your Say’ survey in 2022, and an amazing 82% of colleagues responded. After carefully analysing the responses, the People and Culture team, along with the Business Leaders, created and implemented a central action plan to make improvements where they were needed.

When you receive the invite and link to complete the online survey, we would very much like every one of you to fill in your responses because this lets us know what is genuinely important to everyone. Tell us what you love about working for Revitalise, what we need to do more of and what you think needs to improve.

Summer Recipe Salsa Mexicana

Recipe courtesy Paul Murray

Ingredients

3 ripe tomatoes

1 onion

1-3 chillies

¾ oz fresh coriander

1 clove of garlic

2 level tsp salt

2 tsp lime juice or cider vinegar

1 oz cheddar cheese (optional)

tortilla chips

Storage

Core and chop the tomatoes into small pieces and put into a bowl. Deseed and chop the chillies then add to the bowl.

Chop the onion, garlic and coriander and add to the bowl with the salt and lime juice. Stir well then refrigerate for two hours.

Method Serving

If using the cheese, then sprinkle on the tortilla chips and grill for a few seconds until melted.

Use the chips (or a spoon) to scoop the salsa from the bowl and enjoy!

Everything needs to be chopped quite small in this recipe. I have made this in a food processor and it does save loads of time but the consistency never seemed right so now I always chop by hand or better still, delegate the chopping to someone else and supervise.

There isn’t usually any left, but if you do, it will keep for several days in the refrigerator. Be mindful that it might lose its texture after a couple of days.

“ One of my favourite memories whilst on my Revitalise holiday was when I went ice skating. I didn’t think this was possible in a wheelchair, but there I was, with the help of my carer gliding around the ice rink like Christopher Dean. Definitely an unexpected tick on the bucket list. “
