La mujer ha destacado su voz este año más que nunca con marchas de apoyo por todo el país y el mundo, rompiendo estereotipos como las mujeres en esta edición. Nuestra bella portada, Carolina Ravassa, actriz de Nueva York, representa la voz de la primera heroína mexicana Sombra, en el mundo virtual de videojuegos y en su show Hispanglosaxon, recién nominada para los premios IMAGEN ¡este mes de agosto! La emprendedora mexicana Araceli Graham junto con sus diseñadores de moda va demostrando el lado sofisticado de la moda latinoamericana y que ¡no todo es vestidos folclóricos! Conoce a la embajadora mexicana de diseñadores latinoamericanos en Estados Unidos a través de su tienda online Cooperativa Shop. Araceli rompe estereotipos promoviendo el trabajo de diseñadores latinoamericanos emergentes o establecidos dándoles apoyo para salir adelante en Estados Unidos. Con invitadas especiales como la directora editorial de Vogue México y Latinoamérica, Karla Martínez de Salas y la editora creativa Kelly Talamás, Cooperativa Shop va cambiando ideas preconcebidas con respecto a la moda, descartando la idea de que no sólo son vestidos folclóricos y ponchos, y expresa con sus diseños la parte sofisticada de la cultura latinoamericana. Hace trece años Araceli llegó a Houston desde México donde había trabajado en el mundo corporativo con empresas multinacionales tales como Coca Cola de México y Glaxo Smith Kline, pero siempre le apasionó la moda. Cada vez que regresaba a Houston de viaje la gente le preguntaba dónde había comprado su ropa y no podían creer que era diseñado y ¡hecho en México! Ese interés le dio la primera idea.
1. ¿QUÉ TE INSPIRÓ A INICIAR COOPERATIVA SHOP? Me daba cuenta de que en México hacían muchos bazares de moda, revolucionando marcas y sentía que estaba sucediendo un movimiento creativo al igual que en Colombia. También como consumidora, confieso que soy una shopacholic online, (risas) después de comprar en tiendas similares, me aburría mucho porque empezaban a tener cosas muy parecidas o
iguales. Siempre buscaba algo diferente. Tenía amigas diseñadoras que querían traer su línea a Estados Unidos, en Nueva York, y decidí empezar a ayudarles a través de Cooperativa Shop.
2. ¿CUÁL ES EL MAYOR OBSTÁCULO PARA ESTOS DISEÑADORES AL VENDER EN ESTADOS UNIDOS? Por lo general no tienen el apoyo necesario, o la infraestructura, para salir adelante aquí en Estados Unidos. Ellos hacen de todo; aparte de diseñar, hacen el trabajo de ventas, distribución, mercadotecnia, relaciones públicas y todo esto los distrae de su función primordial, que es el diseño. Cuando llegan a Cooperativa yo les doy apoyo en esas áreas para que salgan adelante. Hay excepciones, como el diseñador mexicano Kris Goyri, que ya ha delegado esas actividades y está muy bien organizado para concentrarse en crear su moda y ha tenido éxito.
3. ¿QUÉ BUSCAS EN UN DISEÑADOR REPRESENTADO POR COOPERATIVA? Lo que yo busco es que el diseñador incluya sus raíces latinas en sus diseños, ya sea en sus bordados, tapices, ya sean herreros o artesanos de pieles, y no es necesario que viva en Latinoamérica.
4. ¿LA MAYORÍA DE LOS DISEÑADORES QUE REPRESENTAS SON MUJERES? Sí, estamos presenciando un movimiento fuerte de mujeres emprendedoras de
México, Colombia, Perú, Brasil, Venezuela, Argentina, Ecuador, Costa Rica, y cada una tiene una historia única, que te inspira. Estoy muy contenta de poder ayudarles y ser parte de su éxito.
5. ¿QUÉ RESPUESTA HAS RECIBIDO HASTA EL MOMENTO? Al principio, cuando empecé a hacer eventos para introducir las líneas de ropa en tiendas temporales tipo pop up, la gente no podía creer que la ropa de lujo era de México o Colombia, y ahora ya están empezando a acostumbrarse.
6. ¿QUIEN ES TU CLIENTE IDEAL? Mi cliente ideal es una mujer educada, que ha viajado, que aprecia otras culturas, que aprecia lo diferente y no sólo sigue las tendencias a ciegas de la ropa, las joyas o accesorios. Su ropa tiene que brindar algo especial para ella. Mi cliente ideal sabe combinar piezas de grandes marcas europeas con piezas que tengan un toque artesanal sofisticado de Latinoamérica sin perder su esencia elegante.
7. ¿QUÉ PIEZAS DE ROPA ESENCIALES RECOMIENDAS PARA VIAJAR?

8. ¿COMO SURGE LA IDEA DE ROPA PARA NIÑOS? Acabamos de lanzar nuestra primera línea de ropa para niños, Capsule Collection, donde todas las ganancias serán destinadas a una asociación sin fines de lucro, projectpaz.org, organizada por un grupo de mexicanos en Nueva York para para ayudar a niños afectados por la violencia relacionada con las drogas en Cd. Juárez, México.
9. ¿QUÉ SORPRESAS NOS TIENES PARA EL FUTURO?
Tenemos planes de ampliar la visión de Cooperativa Shop para incluir algo más que ropa, joyas y accesorios; quiero incluir piezas de arte emergente y muebles para que puedas tener un lifestyle de Latinoamérica donde quiera que estés.

By Lilia Davis Meet Araceli Graham, Mexican ambassador for Latin-American design and designers in the United States, by way of her online business Cooperativa shop. Aracely breaks stereotypes by promoting the work of Latin American designers, emergent or established, by giving them the support to get ahead in United States. With special guests such as the editor in chief of Vogue Mexico and Latin America, Karla Martínez de Salas and the creative director, Kelly Talamás, Cooperativa Shop is changing preconceived ideas with respect to fashion, discarding the common idea that Latin American fashion is not only folkloric dresses and ponchos, and express with the designs shown the sophisticated side of the Latin American culture. Araceli arrived to Houston thirteen years ago from Mexico City where she had been working in the corporate world with multinational companies such as Coca Cola de México, Glaxo Smith Kline, - all that time fashion always being her passion. Each time she returned to Houston from traveling in Mexico, people asked her where she had purchased her clothing and they could not believe that it was designed and made in Mexico! Such interest sparked the idea for Cooperativa Shop.
1. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START COOPERATIVA? I became aware that there were many fashion bazaars in Mexico that were starting to revolutionize brands and I felt that a creative movement was happening equal to that in Colombia. Also as a consumer – I confess that I am an online shopaholic (laughter) after buying in similar online stores, I was very bored because they started having very similar or equal things. I always searched for something different. I had friends who were designers that wanted to bring their lines to the United States, to New York, and I decided to start helping them through Cooperativa Shop.
2. WHAT IS THE MAIN OBSTACLE FOR THESE DESIGNERS WHEN SELLING IN THE UNITED STATES? Generally, they do not have the necessary support or the infrastructure to get ahead here in the United States. They do everything themselves, in addition to designing, they do the sales work, distribution, marketing, public relations and all that distracts them from their main function: designing. When they arrive at Cooperativa I give them support in those areas so that they can get ahead. There are exceptions such as the Mexican designer
Kris Goyri who has delegated those activities and is so very well organized, so that he can concentrate on creating fashion and that has been a success.
3. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A DESIGNER REPRESENTED BY COOPERATIVA? What I look for is designers that include their Latin roots in their designs, either embroidery, tapestry, blacksmith, leather artisans and it is not necessary that he or she live in Latin America
4. ARE THE MAJORITY OF THE DESIGNERS YOU REPRESENT WOMEN? Yes, we are witnessing a strong movement of entrepreneurial women from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Ecuador, Costa Rica and each has a unique story, a story that inspires. I am very happy of being able to help them and be part of their success.
5. WHAT RESPONSE HAVE YOU RECEIVED SO FAR?

In the beginning when I started doing events to introduce the lines of clothing in temporary venues like pop up stores, people could not believe that the luxury clothing was from Mexico or Colombia, and now they are beginning to get used to it.
6. WHO IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?

My ideal client is an educated woman, that has travelled; that appreciates other cultures; that appreciates something different and does not follow trends in clothing, jewelry and accessories blindly. Her clothing has to provide something special for her. My ideal client knows how to combine clothing pieces from the great European brands with pieces that have a
sophisticated artisanal touch from Latin America without losing her essential elegance.
7. WHAT ESSENTIAL PIECES OF CLOTHING DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR TRAVELING? A pair of jeans, a long sleeve t-shirt, a leather jacket or a well cut blazer and a pair of shoes with heels.
8. HOW DID THE IDEA FOR A CHILDREN’S CLOTHING LINE COME UP? It was organized by a group of Mexicans in New York in order to help children affected by violence related to drugs in Cd. Juárez, México. We have just launched our first line of clothing for children, Capsule Collection, where all the profits will be destined to a nonprofit association, projectpaz.org
9. WHAT SURPRISES SHOULD WE EXPECT IN THE FUTURE? We have plans to extend the scope of Cooperativa Shop to include more than clothing, jewelry and accessories. I want to include emergent art pieces and furniture so that you can have a Latin American lifestyle wherever you are in the world.

CAROLINA RAVASSA UNA MUJER. DOS VOCES

C
arolina Ravassa cuenta con belleza, energía, personalidad y mucho talento como actriz y rompe el estereotipo latino no sólo como la voz que da vida al personaje de Sombra, la primera heroína mexicana en Overwatch, el videojuego más exitoso de 2016 y cuya popularidad ha rebasado millones de jugadores en todo el mundo, sino que también es la voz de Hispanglosaxon, su propio programa, donde expresa y derrumba los estereotipos que todavía existen sobre las actrices latinas en Nueva York. Ha actuado en la serie The Affair, ganadora del Globo de Oro de 2015, por mejor drama de televisión. Carolina fue invitada especial de Revista Mujer en su primer panel del Festival de Videojuegos SXSW 2017, Boop! Women On Line: Female Voices in Videogames y pudimos constatar por qué es tan querida por sus fans.
PERO, ¿QUIÉN ES SOMBRA? Según su biografía ficticia en el videojuego Overwatch de la empresa Blizzard, ella viene de un pasado con violencia en México, de un pueblo llamado el Dorado. Sobrevivió una guerra donde lo perdió todo. De niña creció muy pobre y empezó a manipular información para obtener lo que necesitaba para sobrevivir. Antes de ser noble, es astuta y su habilidad como hacker es inigualable. Esa niña después se convierte en Sombra.
¿CÓMO FUE TU EXPERIENCIA DURANTE LA AUDICIÓN PARA OBTENER EL PERSONAJE DE SOMBRA? No tenía idea de lo importante que era el personaje Sombra en la comunidad de jugadores y del éxito que ha tenido. Fue muy competitivo y querían a una persona con acento latino en inglés, lo cual se me facilita mucho porque hago imitaciones de varios acentos latinoamericanos. Así que me enfoqué más en resaltar la actitud de mujer poderosa que tiene la capacidad de hacer cosas increíbles, como el personaje de Sombra.
¿POR QUÉ TE GUSTA SU PERSONAJE?
Porque no es un estereotipo, aunque tiene un acento estereotípico y cómico. El personaje es complejo, tiene un pasado tumultuoso y misterioso. Además, cuando piensas en un hacker mundialmente famoso no siempre piensas en alguien de México, y mucho menos en una mujer. También me encanta su habilidad para hacerse invisible y piratear todo, y ¡a todos!, algo así como un “súper mega hacking”.
¿QUÉ SIGNIFICA LA EXPRESIÓN “BOOP” QUE USA SOMBRA? Es como una referencia en el juego para expresar una actitud de reto, como “ya veremos cómo te va, si no haces esto.” Esta expresión ha causado polémica entre los fans. Uno de ellos escribió que era un tipo de infiltración. La expresión de “!Boop!”, la hace tocando la nariz de otros con su dedo índice.
¿QUÉ O QUIÉN TE INSPIRA PARA HACER TANTOS ACENTOS Y VOCES?
el inglés. En los veranos visitaba a mis tías en los Estados Unidos, y eso también ayudaba. Como desde chica me gustaba De niña veía mucho al actor Robin Williams interpretar todo tipo de personajes, cantaba y me asombraba de todas las voces que podía y bailaba, sobre todo salsa – aunque nadie imitar. ¡Era increíble! No supe lo mucho me lo pidiera-, (risas) decidí estudiar que me influyó hasta que me puse a pensar actuación en el Boston College y así llegué después de que falleció. También me inspira a Estados Unidos de forma permanente. Cate Blanchett, pienso que es una actriz de Aquí me preparé en el Conservatorio de muchos matices y me impresiona lo bien Arte Dramático en Nueva York, donde vivo que los desempeña. También he vivido en actualmente. España, Italia y en Brasil donde trabajé en el Teatro del Oprimido con prisioneros en ¿TE GUSTA MÁS SER ACTRIZ DE cárceles, creando las historias que ellos VOZ? deseaban crear, para hacer un cambio positivo en sus vidas. Pero me gusta más ser actriz de películas o televisión porque utilizas tu
cuerpo como herramienta para expresar tus sentimientos, no sólo tu voz.
¿CÓMO ESCOGIERON LAS FRASES MEXICANAS Y CUÁLES SON TUS FRASES FAVORITAS EN EL JUEGO?
Aunque el videojuego es en inglés, los escritores del juego, bajo la supervisión de Michael Chu, el escritor principal, contrataron personas de la ciudad de México para aconsejarles y darle veracidad a las frases mexicanas. Mis frases favoritas son varias: “Apagando las luces”, “Qué onda”, “Me agarraste en curva”. La que más me gusta, es bilingüe: ¨Relájate, I´m not going to kill you.¨ (Relájate que no te voy a matar) (risas) - Creo que esa explica el humor de Sombra.
¿SIENDO COLOMBIANA, SE TE DIFICULTÓ HACER ACENTOS MEXICANOS? No mucho, la verdad es que no me
www.larevistamujer.com preguntaron nunca de dónde era, simplemente adicioné en español lo que me decían. Te confieso que tenía miedo de que dijeran, “es colombiana, no lo podemos usar”. Lo chistoso es que ya después me dijeron que ya sabían que era colombiana y que tenía mi programa en Youtube Hispanglosaxon. Y que eso fue precisamente una de las cosas que les gustó al elegirme, porque querían a una persona que hiciera una variedad de cosas, no sólo ser actriz de voz.
¿CÓMO NACIÓ HISPANGLOSAXON? Después de muchos años haciendo audiciones en Nueva York, y cansada de toparme con los estereotipos culturales que todavía existen en cuanto a las actrices latinas, decidí expresar todas estas experiencias en diez capítulos, en forma de comedia, que he filmado, dirigido y actuado yo misma con un iphone y ¡con pelucas prestadas! Resultado: Un ramillete de personajes encantadores con diferentes acentos. Hispanglosaxon ya ha empezado su segunda temporada y lo pueden ver en www.hispanglosaxon.com. Estoy emocionada porque acaban de nominar mi programa para los Premios IMAGEN 2017 ¡precisamente en este mes de agosto!
¿QUÉ TE GUSTÓ DE TU PARTICIPACIÓN EN EL FESTIVAL SXSW DE VIDEOJUEGOS 2017 EN AUSTIN, TEXAS? Es la primera vez que visito Austin y me encantó la experiencia. La ciudad es divina, la gente amable, y poder asistir a los eventos de SXSW fue muy emocionante para mí. Me gustó poder conocer al escritor principal Michael Chu un poco más, pues aprendí mucho acerca de su proceso en Overwatch y todos los días voy entendiendo mejor el juego. El panel me pareció cheverísimo porque vi lo emocionante que es para los fans y todas las preguntas muy bien pensadas, fue todo un éxito. ¡Nos quedamos 30 minutos más de lo programado!
¿QUÉ PIENSAS DEL FUTURO DE LOS VIDEOJUEGOS?
Pienso que el futuro de los videojuegos está en la diversidad de sus personajes y en el desarrollo de juegos donde no hay violencia contra la mujer y donde las mujeres no sólo
son inteligentes y bellas, sino que también son poderosas, sin ser exageradas, sobre todo cuando incluyen a una heroína hispana en sus personajes, como Sombra.
¿QUÉ ACONSEJARÍAS A UN ESCRITOR QUE QUISIERA CREAR UNA HEROÍNA HISPANA? Para crear una heroína en su historia, les aconsejaría que piensen primero que todo en las mujeres de su familia, su mamá, sus hermanas, sus tías, o sus abuelitas. Eso será su punto de partida.
¿TUS PLANES EL RESTO DEL AÑO?
Acabo de regresar de Francia y Australia y pienso seguir viajando con el personaje de Sombra por todo el mundo. Pero este otoño quizá filmaré una película en Italia y estoy súper entusiasmada. Cada día aparecen nuevas oportunidades, así que hay que atraparlas, porque como dice Sombra: “Camarón que se duerme, ¡Se lo lleva la corriente”! ¡Boop!
COSAS DE CAROLINA
Carolina no tiene dos perritos Chihuahua, pero le encanta cuidar gatos. Le gusta comer tacos al pastor, pero no le gusta pintarse las uñas. Nunca ha ganado un concurso de baile, pero le fascina bailar Salsa. No le gusta el café sin leche, pero le encanta el mole oaxaqueño. No habla japonés. Casi nunca usa tacones altos, pero es súper puntal. Su sueño para el 2018: !Que le llegue más trabajo como actriz!

Carolina Ravassa is beautiful, possesses energy, personality and lots of talent as an actress and breaks the Latina stereotype not only with the voice that gives life to the character of Sombra, the first Mexican heroine in Overwatch, the most successful videogame of 2016 which popularity is in excess of millions of players all over the world; but she is also the voice of Hispanglosaxon, her own web series where she deals and devastates the stereotypes that still exist regarding Latina actresses in New York. She has acted in the TV series “The Affair”, awarded a Golden Globe in 2015, for the best television drama. Carolina was a special guest of La Revista Mujer at its very first panel at the Gaming Festival section of SXSW 2017, Boop! Women on Line: Female Voices in Videogames and we were able to confirm why she is so beloved by her fans.
BUT, WHO IS SOMBRA? According to her fictional biography found in the Overwatch videogame produced by Blizzard Entertainment, she comes from a violent past in Mexico, from a town called El Dorado. She survived a war where she lost everything. As a child, she grew up very poor and started to manipulate information to get what she needed in order to survive. Besides not being always noble, she is shrewd and her ability as a hacker is unmatched. That young girl later becomes Sombra.
HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE DURING THE CASTING SESSIONS FOR SOMBRA’S CHARACTER? I had no idea how important Sombra’s character was in the community of game players and how successful it has been. It was very competitive and they wanted a person with a Latin accent in English, which was easy for me because I do imitations of many Latin-American accents. So I focused more on emphasizing the attitude of a powerful woman that has the capacity to do incredible things, a powerful woman such as Sombra’s character is.
WHY DO YOU LIKE HER CHARACTER?
Because it is not a stereotype – although she has a stereotypical but comic accent. Her character is complex, she has a tumultuous and mysterious past. Besides when you think of a world famous hacker you don’t always think of someone from Mexico, and much less the hacker being a women. I also love her ability to make herself invisible and to hack everything and everyone! - like a super mega hacking.
WHAT DOES THE BOOP!’ EXPRESSION THAT SOMBRA USES MEAN? It is like a reference in the game to express an attitude of challenge, like “we’ll see how you do, if you don’t do this”. This expression has become polemic among the fans. One of them wrote that it was a type of infiltration. Boop!’ expression is made by touching the nose of others with her index finger.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRE YOU TO DO SO MANY ACCENTS AND VOICES? As a child I used to watch a lot Robin Williams and I was impressed by all the voices that he could imitate. He was incredible! I didn’t realize how much he influenced me until I started thinking about it after he passed away. Cate Blanchett also inspires me because she is an actress of many nuances and I am impressed of how well she performs them. I also lived in Spain, Italy and Brazil where I worked in the Theater of the Oppressed with prisoners in jails, creating the stories that they wanted to create, in order to make a positive change in their lives. So I can also act in Italian and Portuguese.
HOW DID YOU ARRIVE IN THE UNITED STATES? I was born in Cali, Colombia, but my grandmother was American and with her and my mother I used to practice English. In the summers I visited my aunts in the United States and that also helped me. Since I loved to interpret all types of characters
when I was a child; I sang and danced, especially Salsa. I decided to study acting in Boston College and in this way I came to the United States in a permanent manner. Here I prepared myself in the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Art, where I currently live.
DO YOU PREFER BEING A VOICE ACTRESS? I like performing as a voice actress because it is a challenge to be able to deliver clear and credible lines in order to bring a character to life. In Sombra, we have 4 hour sessions and although they don’t see my body, they only hear my voice, I also do movements such as when I am running and jumping – dodging the enemy! But I prefer more being a movie or television actress because you utilize your body as a tool to express your feelings, not only your voice.
HOW DID THEY CHOOSE THE MEXICAN PHRASES AND WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE PHRASES IN THE GAME? Although the video game is in English, the writers of the game, under the supervision of Michael Chu, the lead writer, hired experts from Mexico City to advise them and provide veracity to the Mexican phrases. My favorite phrases are several: “Apagando las luces”, “Qué onda”, “Me
agarraste en curva”. The one I like the most is bilingual: ¨Relájate, I´m not going to kill you.¨ (Relax, I’m not going to kill you) – I believe that explains Sombra’s humor.
BEING COLOMBIAN, WAS IT DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO DO MEXICAN ACCENTS? No, not really, the truth is that they never asked me where I was from, I simply auditioned in Spanish with what they provided me. I confess that I was afraid that they would say, “she‘s Colombian, we can’t use her”. The funny thing is that later on they told me that they already knew I was Colombian and they had seen my Web series Hipanglosaxon. All those worries for nothing (laughter). And that was precisely one of the things they liked about me when choosing me, because they wanted a person that did a variety of things, not only being a voice actress.
HOW WAS HISPANGLOSAXON BORN?
After many years of going to castings in New York, and being tired of coming across into the cultural stereotypes that still exist regarding Latin American actresses, I decided to express all those experiences in ten chapters, in the form of comedy, which

WHAT DID YOU LIKE REGARDING YOUR PARTICIPATION IN SXSW GAMING FESTIVAL 2017 IN AUSTIN, TEXAS?
I just returned from France and Australia this summer and I would like to continue traveling with Sombra’s character, around the world. But I am very excited because perhaps this fall I will film a movie in Italy. Each day there are new opportunities appearing, so I have to catch them, because as Sombra says: “Camarón que se duerme, ¡Se lo lleva la corriente”! (The shrimp that falls asleep is carried away by the tide) ¡Boop!
This is the first time I have visited Austin and I loved the experience. The city is divine, the people kind and being able to attend the SXSW events was very exciting for me. I liked being able to know Michael Chu more, because I learned more about the process in Overwatch and every day, I understand the game more deeply. The panel was incredible because I saw how exciting the game was for the fans and all the questions were well thought out, it was a great success. We stayed 30 minutes over the time allowed!
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE OF VIDEOGAMES? I think the future of the videogames is in the diversity of its characters and in the development of games where there is no violence against women and where women are not only intelligent and beautiful, but also powerful, without that being exaggerated, especially when they include a Hispanic female hero among their characters, such as Sombra.
WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE A WRITER THAT WOULD LIKE TO CREATE A HISPANIC HEROINE? To create a heroine in their story, I would

MI PIEL SIEMPRE ESTÁ SECA Y ¡SIEMPRE ME PONGO HUMECTANTE! ¿QUÉ ESTOY HACIENDO MAL? Esto puede ser complicado y ¡frustrante! Primero, asegúrate que estás tomando el agua suficiente para las necesidades de tu cuerpo diariamente, verifica que tu limpiador no te esté resecando mucho y no te des demasiada exfoliación. Después agrega un limpiador en aceite cuando te laves la cara dos veces al día (nos encanta el aceite limpiador (Olive + M cleansing oil) y experimenta poniendo una capa de aceite humectante (prueba L’Oreal’s Age Perfect Hydra-Nutritional Glow Renewal ) debajo de la crema humectante una o dos veces al día. ¡PINTURAS HECHAS CON TODA LA MANO!
Por Lilia Davis Artista plástica regiomontana que sorprende con su arte contemporáneo y que por accidente empieza a pintar con sus manos. Sus pinturas decoran ya un gran número de hogares que sobresalen por sus vivos colores y el estilo personalizado para cada cliente. Admira al pintor mexicano Manuel Felguérez y después de sobrevivir un cáncer, aprecia la vida cada día con una gran fe. Trata de plasmar toda su energía positiva al tocar las pinturas cuando pinta con sus manos. Rebecca nació en Monterrey, N.L. Estudió la carrera de administración de empresas pensando que terminaría con uno de los negocios de su familia de ascendencia libanesa. Sin embargo, no llegó a descubrir su talento para pintar, hasta después de casarse y llegar a vivir a McAllen. Su habilidad para los negocios combinado con su arte, le ha ayudado a tener éxito en su carrera. Sin una educación formal en arte, autodidacta, empieza a practicar sola, viendo otros ejemplos en libros y con mucha dedicación empieza a nacer su arte, pero no con fines de venderlo. Pero cuando un pintor empieza a notar su talento y le compran sus pinturas, es cuando se da cuenta y empieza a valorar que tiene esa gran habilidad.
año espero tener más representación con galerías. La mayoría de mi trabajo proviene de mueblerías por pedido específico para los hogares de sus clientes, pero también he montado una exhibición en la ciudad de México. ¿QUÉ ES LO QUE TE APARTA DE LOS DEMÁS?
¿DESDE EL PRINCIPIO PINTABAS CON LAS MANOS?
Admiro a Pablo Picasso por ser innovador para su época del cubismo y además que no se limitó a sólo ser pintor de un solo estilo, sino que también fue escultor y promotor de la paz. También admiro mucho a Manuel Felguérez, pintor mexicano abstracto y escultor de Zacatecas, a quien tengo el gusto de conocer. También me gusta el estilo de Basquiat.
No, pero notaba que entre más pintaba veía que los pelitos de las brochas se quedaban pegados en la pintura. Trataba de sacarlos con los dedos cuando todavía la pintura estaba fresca y al tallarle, sentía que la pintura se desvanecía mejor y le daba otra textura que me gustaba más. Así que por ese accidente, empecé a pintar con las manos.
¿CÓMO TE CUIDAS LAS MANOS? ¡Me dicen que tengo manos de carpintero! porque pinto casi totalmente con las manos y el uso de pinturas me ha hecho unos cuantos callos; además, tengo la malísima costumbre de comerme las uñas cuando estoy nerviosa (risas). Seguido me pongo aceites y uso material para limpiar mis manos con ingredientes más naturales.
¿ALGUIEN EN TU FAMILIA ES ARTISTA? No, pero mi mamá, que nació en Corpus Christi, Texas, siempre nos decía: “tienen que viajar y apreciar el arte de su propio país, México, antes de ir a ningún otro lugar.” Recuerdo los colores alegres y vivos en los mercados mexicanos y creo que esa fue mi primera inspiración en mis pinturas actuales.
¿QUÉ TE GUSTA PINTAR MÁS? A mí me gusta pintar los abstractos, lo raro, colores, números, rayas, escondidas, muy fuera de lo natural, o tradicional, pero siempre pinto sobre pedido, como lo pida la gente para su casa. Mis pinturas forman parte de la decoración interior de su hogar u oficina. Por lo tanto, respeto el estilo de cada cliente. Además, me gustan los colores vivos y siempre me gusta transmitir algo alegre y positivo en mis cuadros.
¿QUÉ TIPO DE MATERIAL DE PINTURAS PREFIERES USAR? A mí me gusta comprar la pintura mexicana; es más gruesa, más espesa y pienso que es de mejor calidad que aquí en Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, los colores blanco y negro los compro aquí, y los óleos son mejores aquí también. Aunque yo hago mis propios colores.
¿ENMARCAS TUS PROPIOS CUADROS? No, sólo hago el marco tipo museo, de dos pulgadas de canto. El cliente los enmarca, si así lo desea, yo sólo hago los bastidores; al principio los compraba en México, pero ahora mi esposo y yo los hacemos aquí.
¿TIENES GALERISTA? De momento no, estoy trabajando con una galería en San Miguel de Allende, y este
Pienso que es mi ética de trabajo. Siempre soy muy honesta y transparente con mi cliente en cuanto a precios. Además, cada pedido está cien por ciento garantizado, hasta que el cliente esté totalmente satisfecho con su cuadro, porque siempre agradezco cuando alguien me recomienda.
¿HAS RECHAZADO PEDIDOS? Hasta la fecha sólo he tenido que rechazar uno o dos porque parecían negativos y eran cosas en las cuales no creo, y prefiero decirles que no.
¿QUÉ PINTORES ADMIRAS MÁS?
¿CÓMO SOBRELLEVASTE TU ENFERMEDAD DE CÁNCER? No fue fácil; el diagnóstico de cáncer en el estómago me llegó cuando ya estaba casi establecida en mi carrera artística. Tenía mucha incertidumbre. Después de varias opiniones y preparada para lo peor, decidí operarme. Para mi gran alivio y el de mi familia, logré superarlo gracias a los médicos excelentes que me atendieron, pero también con una fe profunda unida a la oración con mi familia. A partir de esa experiencia, aprecio cada minuto de mi vida y me concentro en todo lo positivo.

AN ACCIDENTAL ARTIST
By Lilia Davis A plastic artist from Monterrey, Rebecca began to impress those around her with her craft when began to paint with her hands, completely by accident. Today, her paintings decorate a great number of homes, which are startling because of her lively colors and a personalized style for each client. She admires the Mexican painter Manuel Felguérez, and after surviving cancer, appreciates life and approaches every day with great faith. She attempts to funnel all of her positive energy into her creations by touching her paintings that is when she paints with her hands. Rebecca was born in Monterrey, N.L. Mexico. She studied for a degree in Business Administration thinking that she would end up working in the family business, a family of Lebanese descent. However, she did not discover her talent to paint until after she was married and moved to McAllen, Texas. Her aptitude for business combined with her artistic skill, has helped her to become successful in her career. Without any formal education in art, self-taught, she started to paint, observing other examples in books, painting alone without instruction, not for purposes of selling whatever she created, but creating only for herself. But when another painter noticed her talent and bought her paintings, then she began to suspect that she had skill and a vocation for painting.

DO YOU HAVE A GALLERIST? Not at the moment, I am working with a gallery in San Miguel de Allende in México, and this year I hope to have more representation with galleries. Most of my work comes from furniture stores and by specific order for the homes of their clients, but I also have mounted an exhibition in the Mexico City.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS? I think it’s my work ethic. I am always very honest and transparent with my client in regards to prices. Besides each commission is one hundred percent guaranteed, until the client is completely satisfied with his painting, because I always appreciate it when someone recommends me.
HAVE YOU REJECTED COMMISSIONS? To date I have only rejected one or two because they seemed negative and there were things which I do not believe in – I prefer to tell them no.
DID YOU START PAINTING WITH YOUR HANDS FROM THE START?
WHAT PAINTERS DO YOU ADMIRE?
No, but I noticed that the more I painted; the short hairs of the brushes remained stuck in the painting. I tried to pull them out with my fingers while the paint was still fresh, and when I scrubbed the painting, I felt that the paint smoothed out better and saw that the scrubbing was giving the painting another texture, which I liked better. So, because of that accident, I started to paint with my hands.
I admire Pablo Picasso for being an innovator for his period of cubism and besides he did not limit himself to be a painter in just one style, but he was also a sculptor and promoter of peace. I also admire very much Manuel Felguérez, Mexican abstract painter and sculptor from Zacatecas whom I had the pleasure of meeting. I also like the style of Basquiat.
HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR HANDS?
HOW DID YOU ENDURE CANCER?
People tell me that I have a carpenter’s hands! Which is true since I paint almost entirely by hand, and the use of paint has caused my hands to have a few callouses. Besides, I have the very bad habit of biting my fingernails when I am nervous (laughter). I usually use oils and material with natural ingredients to clean my hands.
It was not easy; the diagnosis of stomach cancer arrived when my career as an artist was almost established. I had a lot of uncertainty. After various opinions and prepared for the worst, I decided to undertake an operation. To my great relief and that of my family, I was able to overcome it thanks to the excellent doctors that assisted me, but also with a profound faith united together with praying with my family. From that experience, I appreciate each minute of my life and I focus on all things positive.
IS ANYONE IN YOUR FAMILY AN ARTIST? No, but my mother who was born in Corpus Christi, Texas always used to tell us that “you have to travel and appreciate the art of your own country, Mexico, before going to any other place”. I remember the happy and lively colors in the Mexican markets and I think that was my first inspiration for my current paintings.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO PAINT THE MOST? I like to paint abstracts, something different, rare you might say, colors, numbers, stripes, hidden, outside of the natural, or traditional, but I always paint on commission, as the customer wants it for the home. My paintings form part of the interior decoration of the home or office. Therefore, I respect each client’s style. Besides, I like vivid colors and I always want to convey something happy and positive with my paintings.
WHAT TYPE OF PAINT MATERIAL DO YOU PREFER TO USE? I like to buy paint from Mexico, which is thicker and heavier and I believe is of better quality than that sold here in the United States. However, the black and white colors, I buy them here, and oil paint is better here as well. Although I make my own colors.
DO YOU FRAME YOUR OWN PAINTINGS? No, I only use the museum style frame, two inches edgewise. The client frames them,
