Su esposo le regaló algunas, y después de ese viaje, ya
en casa, empezó a experimentar con colores y texturas diferentes y eso aumentó su pasión por diseñar y hacer más joyas. Joane se decidió a abrir sus creaciones al público después de ver cómo sus amistades le celebraban sus diseños y la animaban a empezar su propio negocio. Con ese entusiasmo inicia la línea de joyería ANIK, una empresa familiar ubicada en McAllen, Texas, con un taller de joyería donde se diseñan y producen piezas a mano, incluyendo aretes, brazaletes, y collares que son perfectos para complementar y adornar tu persona. En ANIK puedes encontrar joyas para cada ocasión. Prueba tu creatividad, combinando y uniendo piezas. Joan Urquiola, owner and designer of ANIK, brings artistic passion when creating her jewelry as if each piece were an expression of herself. Joan was born in Havana, Cuba and grew up in Mexico City where she met her husband Iker, who has provided unconditional support for her new adventure. When Iker brought her back some beautiful stones from a trip to Chattanooga near Ruby Falls, she thought “I would love to use these stones to make some necklaces for myself”. As soon as she made and wore them she started receiving so many compliment she decided to make them available to the public. In a short while she set up a website and studio in McAllen under the name ANIK. She currently designs and makes each handmade piece including earrings, bracelets and necklaces that are the perfect complement to any woman’s wardrobe. “Siempre supe que iban a ser dos”, expresa la actriz colombiana Maritza Rodríguez acerca de sus gemelos durante una charla amena por teléfono desde la ciudad de México.
¿Cómo te sentiste en el proyecto de la novela El Señor de los Cielos?
Mi personaje de Amparo Rojas en la tercera serie de esta telenovela en México fue una Maritza se encuentra en su mejor momento experiencia muy especial. Trabajar con todo como madre, actriz, esposa y empresaria. el gran elenco de esa producción fue increíble. Es protagonista de la actual telenovela Era mi primer trabajo después de un año de Silvana Sin Lana, la cual rompió récord de tener a mis gemelos. Rafael Amaya es un gran audiencia en Estados Unidos y ahora en amigo, y buen amigo de mi esposo. Lo más lindo México, y fue actriz en la exitosa telenovela es que después de terminar esa telenovela el Señor de los Cielos. Maritza Rodríguez me ofrecieron el protagónico de la telenovela se expresa sobre sus gemelos, la transición Silvana Sin Lana . personal y su nuevo blog: con M de Mujer by Maritza , donde da consejos de bienestar Silvana Sin Lana es una adaptación de femenino y proyecta las experiencias que Pitucas Sin Lucas , original de Chile. ha tenido como madre, esposa, empresaria ¿Trabajaron con los actores chilenos para y actriz. adaptarla mejor?
¿Empezaste en Barranquilla como modelo? Nací en Barranquilla, Colombia, y asistí a la escuela ahí. A los 18 años fui a estudiar a Bogotá la carrera de Administración Financiera, y después exploré la carrera como modelo profesional durante 8 años. Ahora soy dueña de una agencia de modelaje y una escuela de actuación.
No, no tuvimos que trabajar con los actores chilenos para adaptarla a una audiencia extranjera, simplemente se respetó el género de comedia ligera y romántica.
¿En qué se parece Silvana “Chivis” Rivapalacios de Villaseñor a Maritza Rodríguez en la vida real? Me funciona bien como actriz, pero no se parece a mí. Actuar es como un juego, actúas como si fueras otra persona, pero me gusta mucho mi personaje, es encantador. Es muy humano. Ella sufre mucho cuando después de vivir en una atmósfera de lujos, de repente las circunstancias de su vida dan un giro total. Se enfrenta a la responsabilidad de mantener a sus tres hijas y a su mamá después de que su esposo millonario es perseguido por la FBI por fraude y tiene que salir del país, dejándola sin dinero, “lana”. Pero Chivis descubre que tiene mucho valor y entereza y al final triunfa.
¿ Siempre supiste que tendrías gemelos? Siempre tuve la certeza inquebrantable de que serían ¡dos bebés! Quizás porque tengo hermanos gemelos. Nunca tuve duda. Cuando estaba embarazada siempre me referiría a “mis bebés” con mucha naturalidad, en lugar de “mi bebé.” El que se sorprendió de que fuera verdad fue mi esposo. Pero todo lindo, fue hermoso tenerlos.
¿Eres disciplinada, o consentidora con tus gemelos? Soy muy amorosa con ellos, no los quiero lastimar. Quiero que se sientan libres, pero siempre les doy disciplina y dirección a través del amor.
Compartes una actitud muy espiritual y bonita en tu programa con M de Mujer by Maritza , siendo madre trabajadora, ¿Cómo lo haces? Tratando de aplicar las cosas positivas que voy aprendiendo, teniendo un balance espiritual en mi vida con conexión al Creador. Apreciando, compartiendo y ver la felicidad y la Luz en todo.
¿Cómo fue tu transición de modelo, actriz, empresaria, esposa y ahora madre? La transición como persona es esencial en la vida. Hay que dar el primer paso para hacer esa transición. Uno mismo no se puede mentir. La vida, el mundo, no es estático. Los seres humanos soñamos con la naturaleza del cambio. Pero la mujer tiene que permitir un cambio para ser mejor, ya sea como artista, modelo, madre o empresaria.
¿Me podrías contar una de tus experiencias al respecto? Un día estaba terminando un proyecto de modelaje y ¡entré a un casting por equivocación!, de ahí salió una oportunidad para actuar y me gustó mucho. Tuve que jalarme las orejas para decirme: “ Maritza, ¿Por qué no se te había ocurrido explorar esto antes?” Siempre pensaba ser modelo y ya. Ahora sigo explorando, haciendo la transición a la actuación, en telenovelas, ser una celebridad, ser bloguera y siempre estoy terminando una etapa para construir otra.
¿Por qué piensas que a veces la mujer no se llega a conocer bien a sí misma?
La mujer a veces se conforma con lo que tiene. Con lo que se espera de ella y no llega a conocerse a sí misma. Muchas mujeres están descontentas y frustradas porque sus deseos y las expectativas que otros tienen hacia ellas no son lo mismo. Pero ese deseo no te llega solo, hay que buscarlo, encontrarlo, aplicarlo y transformarlo en tu vida real.
¿Qué sorpresas nos tienes para el futuro? Dentro de mis planes personales está terminar mi certificado de Coach de vida y ayudar a cuantas mujeres pueda a sobrellevar la vida de la forma más positiva y comprobar que ¡todo ser humano puede ser feliz!

Un poco de ejercicio aeróbico todos los días. ¿Un cosmético mínimo en tu bolsa? El labial, nunca falla. Con eso y mis gafas oscuras ¡ya estoy lista! ¿Tacón alto, o zapato plano? “I always knew that there were two”, says Colombian actress and former Miss Colombia Maritza Rodriguez regarding her twins during a nice chat over the phone from Mexico City. Maritza is enjoying her finest moment as a mother, an actress, a wife and businesswoman. Being the lead actress in the current tv series Silvana Sin Lana which broke audience records in the USA and now in Mexico, as well as a supporting actress in the successful narco drama and tv series El Señor de los Cielos. She talks about her twins, a woman’s transitions in life, and her new blog: con M de Mujer by Maritza, where she gives advice to women and projects her experiences as a mother, wife, actress and businesswoman. Maritza was born in Barranquilla, Colombia where she lived until leaving for Bogotá at age 18 to pursue a degree in financial management. Later, she discovered the world of professional modeling, something she pursued for 8 years. She now owns her own modeling agency and acting school.
Her role as Amparo Rojas in the third season of the series El Señor de los Cielos in Mexico was a special experience. “Working with the amazing cast involved in that production was incredible”. It was her first job after giving birth to her twins. “Rafael Amaya, the lead character, is a great friend of mine and my husband.” By far, the best part of wrapping up the third season of the popular narco telenovela , was the production company offering her the lead role in a new comedy, Silvana Sin Lana, an adaptation of the original Chilean tv series, Pitucas Sin Lucas, a comedic twist on the old story of a woman’s fall from riches to rags and the climb upward to selfreliance and success. Maritza admits that the role of Silvana “Chivis” Rivapalacios de Villaseñor was a great fit, though personally they aren’t alike. “Acting is like a game. You act a part as if you are another person” says Maritza. “I liked Chivis’ charming and down to earth character”. Chivis suffers enormously when suddenly, after living a life of luxury, her circumstances take a total turn. She is faced with the responsibility of having to support her three daughters as well as her mother after her millionaire husband has to leave the country in a hurry, pursued by the FBI for fraud, leaving her with no money. But Chivis through her newly discovered strength, courage and pluck, succeeds. Turning the conversation to her main joy(s) in life, Maritza always felt, and with an unbroken certainty, that she was going to have two babies. “Perhaps because I have twin brothers. I never had any doubts. When I was pregnant, I always referred to ‘my babies’ naturally, instead of ‘my baby’. The person that was most surprised to discover it to be true was my husband!” she says, laughing. Seeing Maritza enraptured with her twins, is to witness a face of pure happiness. “I don’t want to hurt them, I want them to feel free, and I discipline them, and give them direction but always through love”, she admits. In her new blog: con M de Mujer by Maritza, she gives advice to modern women with a very calm, spiritual attitude toward life. She maintains a healthy balance as a working mother,
applying all of the positive things that she has learned, having a spiritual balance in her life in connection of awareness of the Creator. “Appreciating, sharing and looking at happiness and the light in everything”, she says. Maritza says that transition as a person is essential in life but one has to take the first step in order to accomplish that transition. “One cannot lie to oneself. Life, that is, the world is not static. We human beings dream dreams of changes. But women have to allow themselves to change in order to be better, either as an artist, model, mother or business woman”, expresses Maritza. One day, she was off to a modeling job and accidentally walked into an acting audition. She was very glad she stayed because an opportunity arose for acting, something she realized she liked very much. She kicked herself saying “Why did you not think of trying this before?” “Modeling was it for me, until I discovered acting”. Now, she continues to explore different
things, from acting in telenovelas, being a celebrity, a blogger- “I am always finishing one phase to move on to another”. Maritza says sometimes women get comfortable with what they have and with what is expected of them and they don’t get to know themselves as well as they should. “Many women are unhappy and frustrated because their desires don’t match what others expect from them. Your desire doesn’t just magically arrive, you need to search for it, find it, and make it a part of your life.” She plans to finish her certificate as a Life Coach and to help as many women as she can cope with life in the most positive way and prove that every human being is capable of being happy!

l año pasado tuve el honor de participar en FEIPOL como poeta y puedo decir que ha sido una de las experiencias más especiales de mi vida. Para mí, participar en este festival, fue mi primer contacto real con el mundo de la poesía. Y me hizo darme cuenta de que en realidad es un arma que yo necesito personalmente, como terapia expresiva. Pero que también es algo que el mundo necesita, porque la poesía dice lo que todos callan.
OBJETIVO El objetivo de este festival es crear un cambio positivo en la comunidad del Sur de Texas, mientras se celebra la cultura y el arte Latinoamericano a través de la poesía. El festival es gratuito y abierto al público, y promete traer más de 30 poetas de Estados Unidos, México y otros países de Latinoamérica.

Festival Internacional de Poesía Latinoamericana Poetas Latinos buscan fomentar la paz
Texas, ganadora del premio Gabriela Mistral en 2010 entre otros premios importantes. Los dos comentaban sobre la oleada de migrantes que venían buscando refugio de otros países y decidieron fundar una manera para hacer que todas esas personas se sintieran bienvenidas en tierras extranjeras. Empezó como una idea, que años después se materializó en lo que hoy es FEIPOL. El día de hoy, el equipo organizador se conforma de 16 personas y muchos otros aliados. “Todos estamos unidos por esa pasión de darle una promoción cultural – no sólo literaria, sino también artística – a una zona donde realmente hay una necesidad de ello,” dijo Eréndira Santillana, editora y directora de registros.

El tema principal de este festival es la paz, pero siempre se mantiene presente el tema transversal de la frontera, de la migración, las lenguas en contacto y la solidaridad entre los Latinos. Cada año, se invitan a poetas de honor que son poetas reconocidos a nivel internacional por sus obras. Este año, los poetas de honor serán Jorge Galán, Cristina Rivera Garza, Felipe Montes, Rigoberto González y Jorge Miguel Cocom Pech.

CATEGORÍAS
Hay dos categorías: La primera es para adultos mayores de 18 años de Estados Unidos o cualquier país de Latinoamérica. En esta categoría se eligen a los participantes a través de un jurado externo al equipo organizador, compuesto de 3 poetas reconocidos a nivel internacional. La segunda categoría es para jóvenes de 15-17 años que estén cursando la preparatoria en Estados Unidos o México. Los poemas pueden ser en español o en inglés.
ANTOLOGÍA El festival no es un concurso, sino que junta todos los poemas seleccionados y se crea una antología, que celebra precisamente la poesía. La antología incluye los poemas de los participantes y algunos poemas de los poetas de honor y se da a conocer a través de eventos de lecturas de los poemas seleccionados en diferentes ciudades del Valle de Texas. También se han hecho esfuerzos por dar a conocer el festival en otros países, como en La Feria del Libro en La Habana, Cuba.

Last year, I had the honor to be a part of FEIPOL as a poet and I can say that it has been one of the most special experiences of my life. For me, being a part of this festival was my first contact with the marvelous world of poetry. It made me realize that poetry is something that I need personally as a therapy to express myself. This year the poets honored will be Jorge Galán, Cristina Rivera Garza, Felipe Montes, Rigoberto González and Jorge Miguel Cocom Pech.
BEGINNINGS The idea of this festival came in a conversation in 2015 between Gerald Padilla and his wife, Rossy Evelyn Lima, award winning poet native of Veracruz,

FEIPOL 2017 This year, the second International Festival of International Poetry will take place on Oct 5-7 at the McAllen Public Library. The main theme for this year’s festival is peace.

They were both talking about the wave of immigrants that came to the US looking for refuge from other countries. They decided to provide them a way in which they would feel welcome in foreign lands. It all started as an idea, that years later became FEIPOL. Today, the organizational team is composed of 16 people along with many other allies. “We are all united by the passion for cultural promotion – not only

CATEGORIES There are two categories: one for adults above 18 years of age from the United States or any other country in Latin America. In this category participants are chosen by means of a jury, formed by 3 poets recognized at an international level. The second category is for 15-17 year old high
school student participants from the United States or Mexico. The poems can be in Spanish or in English.
ANTHOLOGY This festival is not a contest. It gathers together all the selected poems and creates an anthology that celebrates poetry. The anthology includes the poems by the participants and some poems by the honored poets and is shared in reading events in various cities within the Rio Grande Valley. This festival is known in other countries, such as the Book Fair in Havana, Cuba.

INGREDIENTES / INGREDIENTS 4 pimientos rojos/4 red peppers 1 pepino sin semillas / 1 seedless cucumber 1 baguette cortada en rebanadas / 1 sliced baguette ¼ taza de vinagre balsámico / ¼ cup of balsamic vinegar 1 taza de queso ricotta / 1 cup of ricotta cheese 1 cucharada de pimienta / 1 tablespoon of pepper 1 cucharada de sal / 1 tablespoon of salt 1 diente de ajo / 1 garlic clove albahaca / basil

Prepare cada bruschetta poniendo sobre el pan 1 cucharada de queso ricotta y 2-3 cucharadas de la mezcla de pimientos y pepino. / Add a tablespoon of ricotta cheese on bread and 2 to 3 tablespoons of the red pepper and cucumber mix.

S E BA S T I Á N Un escultor de la calle
S
us impactantes estructuras monumentales se encuentran y son celebradas tanto en México como en el resto del mundo donde ha recibido numerosos premios, como en Noruega y Japón, y recientemente ha sido reconocido con el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes 2015 en Bellas Artes en México. Su lenguaje es la geometría transformable. Piensa que la mujer lo es todo, y su sueño es ver sus “Nanoesculturas” flotando en el espacio. Todos nos quedamos absortos al ver cómo Sebastián transformaba sus estructuras geométricas con sus propias manos grandes y fuertes, sentado en una mesa frente a nosotros durante su primera exhibición “Geometría del Arte y el Tiempo” en el Museo Mexic-Arte, en Austin, el pasado abril 2017. Como por arte de magia iban surgiendo pequeñas esculturas en tercera dimensión de colores vivos, amarillo, rojo, verde, morado, moviendo sus manos casi por instinto pero con una gran precisión. Sonreía al finalizar cada una. Su pasión por las matemáticas, ya sea euclidiana o no, era palpable al grado de darnos cuenta de que simple y sencillamente, estábamos enfrente de un genio.
SEBASTIÁN Nacido en Ciudad Camargo, Chihuahua, México, Enrique Carbajal es su nombre de pila. Crece en un entorno en el cual la naturaleza es el foco principal, pero una naturaleza intensa. Los cambios de temperatura, del calor al frío, los vientos fríos, los colores, todo lo abarca y lo absorbe desde niño que más tarde influyen en su arte.
México es uno de los principales productores de hierro en el mundo. Mi color favorito es el rojo puro.
¿POR QUÉ SE CONSIDERA UN ESCULTOR DE LA CALLE?
Un día platicaba con alguien que sería increíble ver a mis esculturas flotando en el espacio, un sueño mucho más ambicioso para un futuro más lejano. Ahora estamos un poco cerca. Estamos por firmar un convenio este año para la elaboración de un proyecto de 10 “Nanoesculturas”, obras de arte de dimensiones nanométricas, en colaboración con el CIC del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) de México para hacer lanzamientos al espacio con un mensaje. ¡Imagínese! Esto es un ejemplo de que cuando el arte, la ciencia y la tecnología se unen, se convierten en el vehículo para la transformación del futuro.
Así me identifico porque mis esculturas son urbanas y se encuentran en el exterior para ser vistas y apreciadas por todos. Pienso que mi arte es lo más democrático, porque todos, ricos, pobres, jóvenes, ancianos, niños, hombres y mujeres, lo pueden ver. Los museos de exposición son los parques y plazas, de las ciudades del mundo. No tienen horario de apertura o clausura, la entrada es gratuita, y son apreciadas bajo la luz natural.
¿SIEMPRE BUSCA PROVOCAR CON SU OBRA? Si la obra no provoca, en la forma positiva o transmite algo, entonces no sorprende, no llama la atención y se convierte en una más del montón. Mi obra es de un lugar profundo, de raíces profundas.
¿SI HICIERA UN MONUMENTO A LA MUJER, CÓMO LO HARÍA Y QUÉ COLORES USARÍA? Primero que todo quisiera expresar que admiro y siento un gran respeto y reconocimiento a la mujer. La mujer lo es todo. En cuanto a monumentos, tengo un proyecto diseñado como un símbolo a la mujer mexicana, pero no lo he realizado, llamado “La Malinche”, provocadora del mestizaje. Además, la diosa de la fertilidad. Mujer que conquistó al conquistador. Utilizaría los colores entre el azul turquesa por su belleza y riqueza y el verde esmeralda para simbolizar el poder.
¿HAY ALGUNA MUJER QUE LO HAYA INFLUENCIADO PARA SER LA PERSONA QUE ES HOY? Mi mamá fue fundamental en mi formación como artista. Me enseñó a pintar, me ayudó a pensar, a contar, las matemáticas y a concebir la idea en mi cabeza de que se puede hacer arte. Mi mamá hacía ropa para mujer y me gustaba ayudarle a diseñar y cortar los patrones de ropa. He diseñado una colección de vestidos de alta costura como parte de mi obra y los he presentado en la casa Pierre Cardin en París y en el Desfile de Modas de Mercedes Benz en la ciudad de México. Estos vestidos no son para venderse en masa, aunque se pueden adquirir en la Fundación Sebastián.
¿POR QUÉ UTILIZA CASI SIEMPRE EL HIERRO, Y CUÁL ES SU COLOR FAVORITO? Es el material que me da la posibilidad de hacer más virtuosismo a nivel monumental, por la estrategia estructural y por la fuerza del hierro y además es el más económico. Además,
¿SU SUEÑO PARA EL FUTURO, ”NANOESCULTURAS”?
¿PODRÍA NOMBRAR 3 COSAS QUE USTED SIEMPRE LLEVA CONSIGO ESENCIALES EN SU TRABAJO? Un compás, una escuadra y un lápiz. Con eso ya estoy listo para poder trabajar. ¿POR QUÉ DICE QUE LA GEOMETRÍA LLEGA A SER EMOCIONAL Y QUÉ LO INSPIRA A SEGUIR ADELANTE? Para llegar a ese proceso creativo es importante saber un lenguaje. Para mí, ese lenguaje es la geometría. Uno evoca ideas, conceptos, no todo está en la naturaleza. Después llega un momento en que todo está ordenado, muy claro, y el resultado de esa geometría produce una emoción increíble. La vida y la naturaleza misma, me inspiran a seguir adelante. ¿LE TIENE MIEDO A LA MUERTE? No, no le tengo miedo. He cumplido y logrado cosas muy gratificantes durante mi vida, que me siento satisfecho. Además, pienso que físicamente uno muere, pero la energía se queda. El suspiro humano que creó todo permanecerá para siempre. Así que aquí seguiremos de una manera u otra.
¿CÓMO QUIERE QUE LO RECUERDEN? Como mexicano, norteño, creador de estructuras monumentales en todo el mundo. Y recordarles que México es primer mundo en el arte.

be created and that I could do it”, he says. He helped her design patterns for her clothing business. He designed a group of women’s dresses as part of his art which were presented at Pierre Cardin in Paris, and at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Mexico City. These dresses are true couture, not to be sold commercially as ready to wear, but can be made to order for you at Fundación Sebastián. Sebastián most often uses iron in his sculptures because it is the material that provides more virtuosity on a monumental scale, providing structural strength. And iron is the most economical material, Mexico being one of the main producers of iron in the world. His favorite color is pure red. Sebastián believes that geometry is emotional. “In order to arrive at a creative process it is important to have a language. For me, that language is geometry,” he says. “One conjures up an idea, concepts, not everything being readily available in nature…. a moment arrives when everything falls into place, things become very clear, and the result is this geometry produces an incredible emotion”. His dream is to see his sculptures floating in outer space, an ambition that is now closer to becoming reality. Sebastián has signed an agreement this year for undertaking a project for 10 “Nanosculptures”- art structures of nanometric dimensions- in collaboration with CIC of the Instituto Nacional Politécnico (IPN) of México to be launched into space with a message. “Can you imagine!” he says. “This is an example of when art, science and technology are united, they become a vehicle for the transformation of the future”.

tanding at a table in the museum at a reception for his first exhibition entitled “Geometry of Space and Time” at Mexic-Arte in Austin, this past April, Sebastian mesmerizes the crowd with his hands, working quickly transforming small cubic shapes into astounding sculptures, effortlessly, in blazing colors, yellow, red, green and purple, his fingers moving with precision. He smiles as he completes one. His passion for mathematics, whether Euclidian or not, was overwhelmingly palpable to the audience, ultimately leading to the unavoidable realization of being in the presence of a genius.
Sebastián declares “What keeps me vital is life itself and nature.” He always carries three essential things with him; a compass, a square and a pencil, and with those three, he is ready to work. He confesses that now he is not afraid to die. He has achieved things throughout his life that have satisfied him. “I believe that one dies physically, but the energy remains.” He wants to be remembered “as a Mexican, a man from the north of Mexico, a norteño, and a creator of monumental sculptures all over the world.” He reminds everyone that Mexico, is a first world country when it comes to art.
Born in the City of Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico, Enrique Carbajal is his given name. He grew up in an environment in which nature was a profound influence, but it was an extreme and intense nature. The changes in temperature, from hot to cold, the freezing winds, the colors, he absorbed all of it in his childhood and later it became a major influence on his art. His monumental and dynamic structures are found and celebrated both in Mexico as well as in the rest of the world. He has received numerous awards everywhere, countries such as Norway and Japan. Recently he has been recognized by the National Science and Arts Awards 2015 of the Museo Bellas Artes in Mexico. Sebastian’s language is transformable geometry. He considers himself a sculptor of the streets as his sculptures are urban and are found outside, on the streets and plazas, to be seen and appreciated by all. His work is deeply rooted. He believes art has to provoke in a positive way, to transmit something, otherwise it becomes just another thing in a huge pile of things no one notices. Sebastián loves, admires and respects women. “Women are everything!” he says. He has a project in mind for a symbol of the Mexican woman, not undertaken it yet, called “La Malinche”, the woman he considers the creator of mestizaje – the blending of cultures. Besides being the Goddess of Fertility, she is the woman that conquered the conqueror. He intends to use colors of turquoise blue because of its beauty and richness and emerald green to symbolize power. His mother was fundamental to his education as an artist. “She taught me how to plan, to think, to count, to understand mathematics and made me realize that art can
