RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

APRIL EDITION 2024

Welcome to Summer!

It’s hard to believe it’s almost time for summer, and we can’t wait to show you all of the ways to get out and play in Reston this season. We have a wonderful summer season in store; Reston Camps is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, and we are ready for a summer season full of programs and events for the entire family.

Part of the beauty of living in Reston is the opportunity to get outside and enjoy open space, trails, and the vast array of activities and programs we offer. Children can learn to swim or take part in nature activities, just to name a few, and Reston offers the entire family a chance to enjoy our pools, tennis and pickleball courts, special classes, lake activities and so much more. Your Reston Recreation and Environmental Education team is excited to deliver our traditional recreational programs and to offer you something new this summer. Don’t forget — Recreation Passes are now FREE for all RA members, so don’t delay in activating your passes to enjoy all Reston has to offer.

As a result of some of the feedback you gave us in last year’s Community Survey, we’ve expanded some of the pool hours and are excited to re-open the renovated and improved Lake Thoreau and Shadowood pools this season. Visit our 72-acre Nature Center trails, join a naturalist led walk, Spring Festival, or enjoy a film. We have a variety of programs on Reston’s lakes, including stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), biophilic initiatives and so much more. For those who want to step up the adrenaline, we offer tennis and pickleball lessons as well as several tournaments throughout the year. Join us for movies, trips to the ballpark or team building opportunities to support our parks. Meet new friends and get those steps in as you explore some of Reston’s gorgeous trails and pathways. If anyone you know is looking for a great summer job — we’re hiring! Our seasonal employees in aquatics, camps, maintenance and more come back year after year because of the wonderful experiences they have.

Our team always welcomes suggestions to provide activities for your enjoyment. Please reach out to lkowalski@reston.org. We look forward to meeting you.

Experience the FUN as you live, work and PLAY this summer with Reston Association.

Reston Association remains committed to inclusivity and nondiscrimination in all RA programs, services and activities, including, but not limited to, people with disabilities. RESTON CAMPS

RESTON CAMPS FAQS

What is your cancellation/ refund policy?

All cancellations must be in writing to the Camp Registrar at camp@reston.org. Please remember DEPOSITS ARE NONREFUNDABLE. *Cancellations requested MORE THAN 14 days before the start of a camp session will be equal a 50% refund (minus deposit) *Cancellations requested LESS THAN 14 days prior to the start of a camp session will equal no refund. See the 2024 Parent Handbook for complete details.

When are camp payments due?

Payment is due in full TWO WEEKS prior to the start of camp session. Your child will be sent home if payment has not been received or a payment arrangement worked out with the Camp Registrar.

Can I switch to a different camp?

Absolutely, as long as there is space available, and your child is within the camp’s age group. All requests must be in writing to the Camp Registrar at camp@ reston.org.

What is special about Reston Camps?

This summer we celebrate our 50 th anniversary! We hire camp staff with a passion for working, playing, and teaching children. Many of our staff are local teachers. All staff are CPR/ AED/first aid certified, have passed criminal background checks, a Central Registry Check, fingerprinting, and have had pre-camp training in child abuse, positive behavior management, camp safety, and ongoing training in camp programming.

Does my child need a camp shirt?

Campers attending Junior Day Camp, Day Camp, Sportsters, Adventure Camp and CITs must wear a Reston Camps camp shirt. Shirts may be purchased in Member Services office. We highly suggest purchasing multiple shirts so that you don’t have to wash shirts each night.

Do you offer Extended Care?

Unfortunately, we no longer offer Extended Care.

I am on vacation for 1 of the 2 weeks of a camp session. Can I get credit for the missed week?

No, we do not prorate for missed days. You must pay for both weeks, but it is ok to only attend one.

What if the camp I want to sign up for has a waitlist?

If a camp session is sold out, you should add your child’s name to the waiting list on-line on the WebTrac website. Reston Camps will contact you if space becomes available.

How will I know if space opens on the waitlist?

You will be contacted via email if a space becomes available and your child is next on the waitlist. You may be contacted at any time, right up until the week before the camp starts. You will be given 24 hours to respond before the next person on the waitlist is contacted. If you accept the available spot, you will be expected to pay the deposit (or full payment) within 24 hours, or your registration will be withdrawn.

Do you allow visitors or volunteers at camp?

For the safety and security of our campers and staff, all visitors must be pre-approved by the Camp Director or Recreation Manager.

What if my child has a disability?

Reston Camps welcomes campers with disabilities. To best accommodate your child, please contact Katherine Caffrey, Recreation Manager, at kcaffrey@reston.org so we can schedule a time to meet and discuss your child’s needs.

Will my child go swimming during camp?

All camps go swimming at Reston Association pools during the camp day, except for Nature Tots, Walkers Rangers and Incrediflix.

All campers are given a swim test by RA Lifeguards on the first day they visit the pool, every session. Further details will be provided to parents via email prior to the start of camp.

Is camp held during inclement weather?

YES! All camp locations have inclement weather policies and Emergency Action Plans. Indoor locations are available for those camps based outdoors. Please remember, drop-off and pick-up locations will always be at the base camp location. On code red days, we increase time in the shade, offer additional water breaks, pool time, and indoor programming. We do not prorate days not attended due to weather.

30 RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

If my child attends the same camp for multiple weeks, will they be doing the same thing each time?

NO! Junior Day Camp and Day Camp have different camp themes and activities each session. Adventure Camp has new and different adventures each week. Occasionally, campers may visit our more popular activities more than once over the summer, but the weekly schedule will not be the same. Our other camps offer different programming and activities each week. Your camper will meet new friends each session - they will have a great time!

Can my child be in a camp group with all of their friends?

There is a question in CampDoc asking parents if there is ONE friend their child would like to be placed in a group with.

BOTH parents (the one asking, as well as the one they are requesting to be placed with) MUST fill out this question or the CampDoc program will NOT match them up. We do our best to accommodate special placement requests but due to the many demographics in a camp (age being the most important one) we can not guarantee requests.

I have questions about camp, who do I contact?

The Parent Handbook contains the answers to a majority of questions parents ask. If you are unable to find a specific answer, please reach out to the Camp Registrar at camp@reston.org or 703-435-6551.

JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON

Volunteer Reston (VR) housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together.

Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.

CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE

VR Corporate Volunteer Program offer expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project. Sponsorship starts at $500.

NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?

Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able

to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups.

ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES

Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.

Habitat Heroes Work Days

Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive plants like English ivy, oriental bittersweet and burning bush. We need heroes like you to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland. These fast-growing, aggressive plants escape from people’s yards and threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations. You don’t need to be an expert to assist in protecting and restoring Reston’s woods. Volunteers are taught to properly identify and manage specific invasives using best management practices.

Join a Habitat Heroes Group Workday:

ƒ Habitat Workdays are held on the 4th Saturday in March, May, July, September and November

ƒ No advanced training required.

ƒ Habitat Heroes management events are led by RA staff

For All Workdays: RA will train volunteers on how to use tools. Volunteers must pre-register. All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult during their volunteer service.

Deerfield Recreation Area

Saturday, May 20

10 a.m. - Noon

Volunteers will conquer invasives. Once these invasive plants are removed native wildflowers, trees and shrubs will have a chance to thrive in our natural areas

For more information or to volunteer for any of the above opportunities contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager at ha@reston.org or 703-435-7986.

Potomac River Watershed Cleanup

Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m.- noon (rain or shine)

All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Join thousands of volunteers in a multi-state effort as we do our part in cleaning up the Potomac Watershed. Reston Association is hosting several sites along Snakeden Branch. Come learn about our watersheds and see what “interesting” artifacts end up in our streams. Gloves, trash bags and grabbers will be provided.

Reston Sites:

• Snakeden Branch Upper – Hunters Woods Village Center

• Snakeden Branch Middle – Soapstone Drive by the KinderCare

For more information or to volunteer contact Ha Brock at ha@reston.org or call 703-4357986.

Stream Monitoring Program

Upcoming Dates:

March 26, 1:00 p.m., Nature Center April 10, 1:00 p.m., Tall Oaks Pool April 27, 1:30 p.m., Nature Center Campfire Ring off of Soapstone Dr.

RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects

with the goal of assessing the health of Reston’s streams. Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality.

If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Email Calvin

Dickens, Watershed Specialist, at 703-435-6560, cdickens@reston. org with the message, “add me to the stream monitors list” to begin receiving emails.

Questions? To Volunteer? More Information? Contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager, at ha@reston.org or 703-435-7986.

Volunteers are needed at the Walker Nature Center Spring Festival in Reston on Saturday, May 4, from 1- 5 p.m.

ƒ Assisting with games and simple crafts for kids

ƒ Canoe and Kayak Rentals
