What we think we know about Cleopatra most likely comes from either one of Shakespeare’s plays or from past Cleopatra movies in which the title role was played by Theda Bara (1917), Claudette Colbert (1934) or Elizabeth Taylor (1963), that is until we venture into a closer look at her actual biogra phy. When one refers to Cleopatra today it is to the one who was seventh in a line of Egyptian Cleopatras as the one who has been most recognized throughout history and has been described through literature, art and music as being a modern-day, seductive and beautiful woman who has had many romantic involvements. But is all that true? As the last Pharoah of ancient Egypt, the reign of Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator saw the end of a Dynasty known as the Ptolemies who had, for almost 300 years, ruled Egypt, Cyprus and other Middle East territories, including parts of what is today, Libya. The Ptolemies were descendants of General Ptolemy who had served under the Macedonian King, Alexander the Great, but by the time Cleopatra came to an unsettled power her territories were being threatened by the Roman quest for their total power to be extended into that area. Although we have seen that for so much of history women have struggled in many parts of the world just to get some educa tion, it is notable then that Cleopatra, in addition to the Egyptian language, had learned to speak those of the Greeks, Parthians, Hebrews, Medes, Troglodytes, Syrians, Ethiopians, and Arabs and was a unique case within her dynasty since she could also read hieroglyphics. She was born in 69 BC and ascended to the throne at age 17 and throughout all of her life contin ued her studies into areas that included geography, history, astronomy, international diploma cy, mathematics, alchemy, medi cine, zoology, economics, and other Ifdisciplines.onesawCleopatra as she was portrayed in the movies they would believe her to have been a woman of great physical beauty similar to the actresses that por trayed her, especially Claudette Colbert and Elizabeth Taylor. However, according to biographi cal accounts along with examples of coins and the artwork from that period that bore her image such was not the case. According to Erich Gruen, professor emeritus of history at U. C. Berkeley “… she was a passionate but also very astute woman …” and philosopher Plutarch noted that rather than unmatched beauty it was talking with her that was captivating, and her command ing presence, along with persua siveness drew men of power and fame to Whenher.their father Ptolemy XII died in 51 BC his throne passed to both his son, Ptolemy XIII and daughter, Cleopatra, the older sister who had previ ously been coregent with her father and now would be with her brother. By 50 BC, however, Ptolemy’s advisors acted against Cleopatra and she was forced to flee to Syria. Knowing she would need Roman assistance to regain her throne she formed a mutual alliance with Julius Caesar who was seeking repayment for debts incurred by Cleopatra’s father just as she was seeking his backing for her return to power. While in Syria, Cleopatra raise an substan tial army so that in 48 BC she joined forces with Caesar who was finally victorious in Alexandria over her brother Ptolemy XIII who was forced to flee and is thought to have drowned in the Nile. Once Alexandria was con quered, Caesar restored Cleopatra to the throne with her other brother, 13 year old Ptolemy XIV as coregent, and he remained in Egypt for a while before returning to Rome. In 48 BC Cleopatra gave birth to a son, Ptolemy Caesar (Caesarion) and later traveled to Rome to visit Caesar sometime in the 46-45 BC time frame with her brother and the infant where she remained until Caesar was assas sinated in March 44 BC and she returned to Egypt. Shortly after their return Ptolemy XIV was killed and Caesarion was installed as coregent, Ptolemy XV. There has been some speculation as to whether Cleopatra had a hand in the death of Ptolemy XIV

Meanwhile, in Rome Caesar’s allies, a triumvirate that included Mark Antony, Octavian and Lepidus, had successfully defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius, Caesar’s assassins. When they returned home Antony and Octavian divided their power in Rome. In Egypt Cleopatra was feeling comfortable and secure in her role as “Queen of Egypt,” that is until severe flooding of the Nile led to crop failure and resulted in nationwide inflation and hunger. It is interesting that to reinforce their positions as kings and queens it was tradition in ancient Egypt to equate royalty with divinity and Cleopatra had long identified herself with the god dess Isis who was the sister-wife of Osiris and the mother of Horus and she was often identified by others as the “New Isis.” Cleopatra was summoned to Tarsus by Mark Antony to explain her role in all that happened after Caesar’s assassination and she arrived there aboard an elaborate ship, dressed in the flowing robes of Isis. This worked to her favor as Antony fancied himself to be like the Greek god Dionysus and was easy prey for her seductive charms. He agreed to protect Egypt, and Cleopatra’s right to rule there, and she returned to Egypt followed shortly by Antony, who then spent considerable time there during the winter of 41-40 BC. It was at this time that togeth er they formed a drinking society which they called “The Inimitable Livers” and shortly after Mark returned to Rome she gave birth to twins naming them Alexander Helios (sun) and Cleopatra Selene (moon). This is the adventure that was recorded to history by Plutarch and depicted by William Shakespeare in the play, Antony and Cleopatra.Following his return to Rome Mark Antony’s wife, Fulvia died and Octavian required him to prove his loyalty by marrying Octavian’s sister, Octavia so it wasn’t until 37 BC that he and Cleopatra met again; this time, he was seeking money to fund a military campaign. For his part, he would return to Cleopatra much of Egypt’s eastern empire, including Cyprus, Crete, Cyrenaica (Libya), Jericho and large portions of Syria and Lebanon. During this time they became lovers again and in 36 BC she gave birth to Ptolemy Phildelphos. But, following a dis astrous defeat at Parthia Antony rejected his wife, Octavia and returned to Egypt which resulted in his being stripped of all his titles by the Roman Senate and Octavian declared war on Cleopatra.BySeptember of 31 BC, at the Battle of Actium, Cleopatra’s and Mark Antony’s forces had been defeated by Octavian’s. She returned to Alexandria followed shortly by Antony. Still, that city was under siege, and when he arrived there, he heard a rumor that Cleopatra had committed suicide, and he used his sword also to die. Before he died, how ever, he learned that the rumor had been false. After she had laid Mark Antony to rest Cleopatra met with Octavian to accept defeat and then immediately clos eted herself in her chamber, and while the actual cause of her death is not certain it has been speculated that she used an asp, the poisonous snake that is con sidered a symbol of royal divinity, to commit suicide. To honor her final wishes she was buried with Mark ThereAntony.is no doubt that Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, was one of the most well educated and powerful Egyptian rulers in histo ry because once she actually assumed the powerful role she held her country together despite its internal and external conflicts. It is unfortunate that much of what is written of Cleopatra’s life and loves comes primarily from the writings of philosopher Plutarch who was born during the century following Cleopatra’s death and from what has been depicted in plays. And, if you did n’t know before you now know more about the forerunner of the modern day “Femme Fatale.”

loose for lunch on our own. For the AARPer’s, this was a grand lesson in survival in the future. Again, no humans were available to offer the lunch special of the day, free samples, or ask it you wanted fries with that. I was flustered enough to just stick my credit card randomly in the closest kiosk, punch buttons on a whim and hope for the best. My partner wanted a more specific experience. Not to be dehumanized, he wanted to customize his order. This demand brought the place to a halt. As he rightfully stood his ground, an uninterested human appeared to mostly tell him, ‘that is not available here.’ Not to be deterred, he engaged the human enough to ‘mar blize’ his meat order, request a glass of ice, and discover no desserts were available. The human looked nervous at all this verbal interaction. The bill was paid after several attempts to tap, swipe and just jam his credit card into a very small contraption. When a paper receipt was not available, there was once again verbal interaction that made the human unsure of how to provide what was obviously not avail able—customer service. Just as a meltdown was imminent, my partner spotted a small bag of potato chips just sitting in a display behind the counter. For him, potato chips are dessert and he smiled at the human and requested a bag of chips. With a long, impatient line behind him, the human just gave him the chips and yelled, “NEXT!”

September 2022 Real Estate Newsline 7www.realestatenewsline.com

Somehow, free chips fixes most bad experiences.Notlong after that educational experience, cashless event number two occurred. We found ourselves in an air port layover in the fancy destination of Phoenix. In a fit of hunger after wait ing for delayed connections, we explored our food options. People had food and got it from somewhere in the airport, but there were very few human ordering places. Seems one approach es any number of kiosks, punches in self-selections, and food appears on a counter for the taking. As I studied my options, my partner sniffed out fresh pastry. That could only mean one thing . . .a human was operating a heating device. He immediately approached a clueless young man and waved a $5 bill asking how much for the bear claw? The young human stat ed they did not take cash and noted he had jumped the ‘line’ and needed to return to his kiosk. No one in the food area had noticed this faux pas, and my partner was not leaving without his claw. He pulled out another $5 bill and offered it to the human stating he just wanted a pastry. In fear for his safety, the human placed the bear claw on the counter and told him to ‘just take it and leave.’ Once again, free food because humans do not want to interact. I am not sure what the future holds for our public dining habits, but for now, cash remains king when negotiating for non-cash payable food.

WAY I

My most recent venture out to a movie theater almost did not happen. Thank goodness my date was my mil lennial cousin who is my ‘all things tech’ go to guru. I am now up to speed on preordering tickets, understanding there are no longer tickets—just a phone screen flash, and humans no longer work anywhere in sight of cus tomers. The Jetson’s have arrived in 2022. If only the little flying car was available for transportation. After the virtual ticket purchase, we walked into the vortex of speakers and the mega screen to our assigned seats, which are now more comfortable than any other seat in my home. The lights went down and so did I—in a cloud of reclined comfort, I fell asleep. So, the movie theater adventure happened, I just missed the movie. Just because we are aware of the cashless, person-less environment, robotic society does not mean the shift of old habits vanish quickly. Practice event number one: Food court at the newest tech center in San Antonio. My partner and I took an exploratory field trip to the latest technology business development at PortSA. We were part of the ‘grand opening’ to show the public this newest space of space-like experiences. We toured the new the ater/exhibit hall/concert venue/rodeo area/whatever you can imagine space that in the press of a button can shift to any needed venue space. We did see humans, but we were distracted by the fancy, flash lighting, the constant movement of walls, chairs and stages to engage with any of them. Next, we were led into a room of endless computers with cooling sta tions. I only mention the cooling sta tions as they are for the heavy use of the computers, not the hot flashes of baby boomers in the crowd. This was the most recent innovation of gaming rooms where gamers come and battleGalactica other gamers in universes far, far away. Humans were in this dark, underlit room, but again, no interaction with them. The flying fingers and occasional phonic outburst kept the looky-lou’s in check. The final destination was the food court: An enormous space of cashless concessions. We were turned Is Less More?

Mission San Jose is 302 years old!! San Jose is considered the most beautiful of San Antonio's historical missions, and cele brants christened San Jose "The Queen Of All Missions," and the Rose Window is "The Jewel In Her Crown," which is still true today. Established in 1720 by King Phillip V of Spain, San Jose was the largest Mission in the area. In its heyday, the community housed about 350 newly recruited Indians. Massive fields and herds of livestock sus tained them along the banks of the San Antonio River. San Jose gained a reputation as an important cultural and social center. The Rose Window, or La Ventana de Rosa, was sculpted in 1775 by Spanish Craftsman Don Pedro Huizar to serve as a gathering point during holy communion for mission residents who were not baptized. The Rose Window is famous throughout the civilized world and signifi cantly contributes to the City of San Antonio and the State of Texas. It is considered America's finest example of Baroque and Spanish Colonial architecture. Hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the United States and many foreign countries come to San Antonio yearly to admire this impressive, elaborate window born from love. The romantic tale surrounding the Rose Window, the beautiful Rosa, and the handsome young artist Pedro Huizar, the favorite sculptor of the Spanish Court, is a legendary story that people share over and over because of the need to believe in history and love. Long ago, King Phillip V of Spain commissioned the talented sculptor to carve a splendorous, ornate, religious quatrefoil on the south wall of Mission San Jose. His love and passion for his lovely Rosa inspired the intricate and elaborate designs in the win dow. Carved from native limestone, nothing of this scale and intricate beauty existed in the U.S., and Don Pedro Huizar was dubbed "The Maestro." After five long years of working feverishly to complete the 10-foot monument, Huizar sent for his betrothed to travel to Texas from Spain. But on her jour ney, the ship encountered a horrible storm, and tragically she either perished at sea or disappeared to a place unbeknownst. While grieving, Huizar carved and added more blossoming pomegranates and religious fig ures to the window and dedicated his master piece to his first love and sweetheart, Rosa. I choose to believe in Don Pedro Huizar and Rosa. I choose to believe in love! Maestro Gilbert Duran, a native San Antonio artist renowned for his wildlife watercolors, portraits, historical works, oil paintings, mosaics, sculpture, and bronze, is passionate about historic San Antonio. A pro lific painter, Duran's studio is filled with his torical works, including a portrait of Julian Onderdonk painting at the Mission San Jose, multiple Rose Windows, and an alluring por trait of Rosa and her journey. The current cover of RE Newsline's September Issue is Duran's original oil painting of "The Rose Window." This painting and other jewels from his collection can be viewed in King William at The Jewel @ 1102 on South Alamo.Interesting Facts

• The Mission has taken on a roman tic life because of the Rose Window, and about 60 weddings are performed yearly!

Mission San Jose & The Rose Window

September 2022 Real Estate Newsline 15www.realestatenewsline.com

• The Rose Window is the earliest known work of sculpture in the United States.

• Edward Huizar is the great, great, great-grandson of Don Pedro Huizar and a First Family Descendant. He is a native San Antonian and has spent 15 years researching the Huizar Family Heritage, finding docu ments and land grants dating back to 1773, and authenticating Don Pedro's legend and the healing of Texans. We met at The Historic Crockett Hotel for the Grand Opening of The Davy Crockett Tavern! Be on the lookout for his upcoming books and documentary about the Huizar Family and Texas. Take a day to explore Mission San Jose. I promise it will be worthwhile. There is a grist mill with running water and a water wheel. There are hiking and biking trails, and your dogs are welcome. There is an excellent mariachi mass on Sundays. There is a reason the five missions are UNESCO World Heritage Sites; they all tell the story of the area's rich history and beauty.

• The plaque beside the window at San Jose credits Don Pedro Huizar for creat ing The Rose Window.

• It is documented that Don Pedro Huizar married twice and had seven chil dren. He named all of his sons Jose and his daughters Maria, after Joseph & Mary, the earthly parents of Jesus.

• There is a small park in San Antonio dedicated to Don Pedro Huizar on the corner of S. St Mary's and Ceasar Chavez. The dedication plaque reads: "Don Pedro Huizar was a Spanish architect, land surveyor, craftsman, and sculptor of the 18th century. Mr. Huizar owned much of the property currently located in the King William Neighborhood." (The Huizar Family lost all of their properties in a land grab from 1835-1842 by Samuel Maverick) The Park went undedicated for 34 years.

• It was here, at the Granary, that children's education in Harlandale would begin. Don Pedro's son Jose Antonio owned the Graney and donated it to the community. It became the first San Jose School.

And for those that rely solely upon the online tax preparation services, you could be responding incorrect ly to some of the questions being asked during the process and risk a totally incorrect return being filed with the IRS. As REALTORS® in the San Antonio area you are very fortu nate that Ed Guerrero of the Guerrero • CPA company is will ing to share his time and talent with you to make sure you are aware of what options you have to ensure that your business is indeed being run as a business. Guerrero • CPA is a unique and dynamic organization. Since its inception in 2001, Ed Guerrero's practice now serves more than 5700 clients and currently employs 25 full-time and five part-time associates, located at 508 Rhapsody Drive.

For many REALTORS®, the sole reason they might utilize a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is that, prior to April 15 of each year, they can drop off files (or shoe boxes) containing the required tax information from the previous year that probably relates to their business so that the proper income tax forms may be complet ed and filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Actually, that is merely tax preparation, and if it represents all that is done annually, it could be doing a major disservice to one's business and to one’s Youself. may wish to continue visiting the Accountant that cur rently prepares your taxes but you should be aware that it could be costing you money, and if your Accountant happens to be a CPA it may be costing you even more.

Once a REALTOR® learns to treat what they do as a business, they will find that there are multi ple things that can be done to ensure that they get to keep more of their net earnings by reducing the amount of taxes they pay out to the IRS. Most have heard that they should set up their business as an LLC single member corpora tion because it will help protect them as a company. And, they should also know that if they con tinue as a sole proprietor they will be reporting their income on a Schedule C which then subjects them to paying self-employment taxes. So, if for example one has a profit of $105,000 for the year, it could translate to about $16,000 in self-employment taxes which points out that by having an understanding of the many tax strategies available, one can save a considerable amount of the monies they have earned and avoid selfemployment taxes altogether. Rather than just preparing their taxes for them, Ed Guerrero encourages REALTORS® to learn how to strategize in advance so they will then be less likely to overpay their taxes by missing some potential deductions because their business entity is not set up properly. And, time is money, so how do you go about learning what tax strategies might be bene ficial for you in your particular sit uation? Ed past speaking event
