A quick trip to Mount Rushmore South Dakota For those who enjoy visiting national parks, monuments and memorials there are certainly a great many of them to choose from in the United States. A national park is defined as a scenic or historically important area of countryside protected by the government for the enjoyment of the public or for the preservation of wildlife (Yosemite). Monuments include a statue, building, or other structure erected to commemorate a famous or notable person or event (Statue of Liberty), while a memorial is an area or feature that honors a historically significant person or event (Vietnam Memorial). Note: a monument is always a type of memorial, but a memorial doesn’t have to be a monument. One of the more popular national memorials to visit is Mount Rushmore located in the Black Hills of South Dakota near the city of Keystone which features the faces of four U.S. presidents carved onto the side of the mountain. In the 1920s the idea for a memorial originated with the South Dakota historian, Doane Robinson, who envisioned a project that would memorialize and pay tribute to the then well-known West Territory figures such as Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea and Buffalo Bill Cody but the sculptor chosen for the job had other ideas. Gutzon Borglum felt this memorial should have a broader appeal than just local figures and selected the four presidents who, in his opinion, represented the country’s founding and the history of its subsequent success as a nation. Although his original plan was that each figure would be from waist up the mountains composition and consistency permitted only the carvings of the faces of Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln, Washington being the only one that shows more than his face to include the collar and upper portion of his coat. He also was the one who after a search of what the state had to offer chose the site to be Mount

Rushmore, a decision that added to a major ongoing controversy that has lasted to the present time. The Plains Indians, which included tribes such as the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Pawnee and Lakota Sioux, to name but a few, had inhabited the central northern part of North America and southern central Canada for centuries. What is now called “Mount Rushmore” was known to the Lakotas as “Six Grandfathers” which were their six ancient deities that represented the six directions: north, south, east, west, above and below. The mountain and its entire surrounding area were considered sacred to the tribes so when the United States attempted to expand into several areas including the Black Hills, it set off the Sioux Wars which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of European settlers and Indians alike. The Treaty of Fort Laramie (or Sioux Treaty) in 1868 was meant to resolve the conflicts as it provided for establishment of the Great Sioux Reservation along the Missouri river, and included full tribal ownership of the Black Hills area in perpetuity. It is easy to see what the memorial project would mean for this treaty. Despite the fact that the Black Hills area was pledged to by the U.S. Government and thus belonged to the Sioux tribe, American prospectors, part of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer’s exploratory expedition, were present and discovered gold there in 1874. The subsequent Gold Rush throughout the hills became ongoing as more and more prospectors arrived to try their luck at finding some of it. Objections to this activity from members of the Lakota Sioux tribe fell on the deaf ears of the U. S. Government, which in 1876 enacted the Indian Appropriations Bill with no Lakota tribal input or approval, illegally seized all their lands and forcibly relocated the tribal members to other Reservations in the western parts of South

Dakota, thus nullifying Sioux Treaty of 1868.

the

The Lakota and other indigenous peoples still consider the Black Hills as sacred but that the grounds have now been desecrated by mining, logging and tourism. The Supreme Court ruled in 1980 that the Sioux deserved just compensation for their lands that were seized and offered them $102 million which the Sioux refused (it remains unclaimed today) saying they just want their land returned to them. Sculptor Borglum named his work for the Mount Rushmore Memorial a “Shrine to Democracy,” however, because of the U.S. Government’s actions many others refer to it as the “Shrine of Hypocrisy.” If you have not had the opportunity to visit this particular memorial you cannot appreciate just how spectacular it is. Borglum determined that the best site for the work was the southeast facing facade of Mount Rushmore which when he first saw it was bathed in sunlight and he is quoted as saying, “America will march along that skyline.” Prior to going to South Dakota, Borglum had been working on the Stone Mountain carvings of heroes of the confederacy, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis. He had started the work with Lee but after a dispute with the project managers he left the site and his work was blasted from the mountain. He began work on Mount Rushmore in 1927 and although he died in March of 1941 his son was able to complete the project by October of that same year. Each of the president’s faces are five stories tall (about 60 feet) so when work began it was really evident that chipping away at the rock with hammer and chisel was not going to cut it. Ninety percent of the surface granite rock face was blasted away with dynamite to leave a very workable canvas exposed. To understand the vastness of the project one needs to know

that for each carving each eye is about 11 feet wide, each nose is approximately 21 feet long and each mouth is about 28 feet wide. It took nearly 400 men and women working together for 14 years to complete the monument and since the granite on Mount Rushmore erodes very slowly (about 1 inch every 10,000 years) it should stand for a very long time. The presidents were chosen for their contribution to the history of the United States. George Washington was recognized for the founding of the nation and Thomas Jefferson for his contribution to the nation’s growth as he played roles in the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition and, of course, authored the Declaration of Independence. Abraham Lincoln represents country’s unity as he worked to preserve the nation during the Civil War and finally he recognized Theodore Roosevelt for the development of the United States as a world power, his negotiations for construction of the Panama Canal and his fight to end corporate monopolies. In the years that followed completion of the monument there have been suggestions that others be added to the face of the mountain. The first such suggestion was to add Susan B. Anthony but Congress declined to fund the addition. Other suggestions have included Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Barak Obama. It is probably good that these attempts were not successful as Gutzon Borglum said the rock would be unable to support any additional carvings, a claim that has been supported by modern engineers. It is obvious that people appreciate the massive sculpture that sits atop Mount Rushmore since more than two million folks visit there each year. For those of you who have never seen this amazing work of art, a quick trip to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota is in order!

THE WAY I SEE IT

Cathey Meyer / Contributing Writer

Taking Chances By the time these thoughts hit the press, most likely, someone is the newest billionaire in the Power Ball Lottery. As I ponder my options for ‘what if I win . . .’ I realize I must first purchase a ticket. I am unclear why I am unmotivated to make that purchase. In those first days of Lotto Texas, back when the big prize would be just over one million dollars, I was all in to spend $1 to most likely not see a return on my investment. Like many wise investors, I was not a regular purchaser of the biweekly chance to retire at a young age. I also struggled with the strategy of selecting my six lucky numbers or allow the Lotto gurus select for me. In a nonscientific study, no discernable difference was noted in the non-payback of the hopeful investment. Scattered winners kept a moderate interest in the I-too-can-win participation. Those were the days when you had to prepay for your gas by entering the convenience store and interact with the friendly clerk who also believed regular people can be

winners. Eventually, I became a lazy, predictable participant who only invested when the jackpot was over $5 million and just settled for the quickpick option on my single dollar buy. Over time, it became too complicated to decide what to buy: Do you want to the bonus number? Do you want a scratch off with that? Did you know the Lottery Gods have added numbers to the mix so it is even more difficult to win? The simple Texas Lotto then morphed into lottos I had no clue about: Mega Millions, PowerBall, Texas Two Step, Cash Five, Cash payouts, 30-year annuities, Scratch This Get That. All the while, the beer and cigarette customers are yelling to HURRY IT UP so they could deal with their own addictions. The pressure to purchase just became too much to deal with and I went on the Lotto wagon and put that $1 in my vacation fund for my Vegas trip. Then the most effective advertising known to drivers got me: A split board with the HUGE numbers announcing the multi-million payouts

for one of the above. I felt a fever coming on . . . . The misguided logic in my head had voices saying, “For a dollar, you could win half a billion dollars! Who wouldn’t take that bet?!” I had to really think through this new investment strategy. Nearly a decade had passed since my last Lotto purchase. I had saved enough money for several Vegas trips where I lost all my investment funds in hands-on gambling. Reinvesting in the local Lotto now made sense, but times had changed. No longer did one prepay for gasoline inside an inconvenience store, so the ticket purchase process needed a dedicated strategy. First, you have to make that specific stop where tickets are sold, which it turns out is everywhere. Typically, those stops are not the most pleasant of shopping venues. Now that we pay for our gas at the pump, those extra steps to actually go inside a store and interact with a human just seems too much trouble. Not to mention that when I do choose to interact with a human, the human is none too happy to engage in conversation, much less a monetary exchange for a pipe dream. The cigarette and beer folks are still there whining when I take too long to ask which jackpot is for which ticket; and by the way, it is no longer just one dollar. My partner and I have the continual debate about which is more like-

7

ly to win: Quick Picks or specifically selected numbers. As we bicker at the counter it seems the winning amount continues to increase as does the agitation of the cigarette and beer folks. We are very inconsistent with our various Lotto purchases. The assumption is we have invested in the big money drawings, but several times, we realized we were losers in much lesser drawings. The lesson is you can lose at any amount of purchase. We also get frustrated at the number of times we have made multiple number combination purchases only to learn not one of our preselected or quick pick selections hit even one number on the row. The mystery remains how so many folks can make so many purchases and no one wins again and again and again and again to the tune of a nearly $2 billion. So here we sit pondering if it is even worth the effort to make the donation for the chance of being that elusive, life changing winner. By the time we decide, the drawing will once again be over. At least the cigarette and beer people were not delayed in making their purchases. The lesson in all this is to be thankful for the blessed lives we live. In the season of gratefulness, my extra dollars will be donated to a more worthwhile cause where random numbers add up to making a difference for those in need. Happy Thanksgiving to you all. (7, 54, 12, 8, 63 & 30 if you feel like taking a chance.)

San Antonio Zoo San Antonio's first Zoo was a wild bunch. It all started in the 1800's in San Pedro Park, where a collection of animals had gathered. In 1914, Texas' greatest philanthropist, George W. Brackenridge, donated a herd of buffalo, elk, deer, monkeys, lions, and four bears to the city on land he endowed that is now Brackenridge Park. The collection became the San Antonio Zoo, a place where people could come together and enjoy the beauty of nature. The Zoo has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have been going to the Zoo since I was in diapers, and the Zoo is the place where I made some of my fondest life memories. I remember the excitement of climbing aboard Lucky for an elephant ride, the thrill of watching the monkeys swing from tree to tree at Monkey Island, and hanging out with Mopi. In the late nineties, I had the gift of a lifetime to visit Mopi at the Washington DC Zoo, and he remembered me! It was a very emotional reunion. I have attended past Zoo Balls and hosted some memorable events. The Zoo was and still is a significant part of my life.

Winter is Coming Though it may seem like we’ve only just begun fall here in central Texas, winter is coming. When it’s tempting to be overwhelmed by how quickly the calendar fills up in winter and how much needs to happen before the end of the year, reflect on the inherent beauty of the perpetually changing seasons. I love the transition from summer to fall. The change in weather and the ability to finally wear jeans again without passing out from a heat stroke make fall officially my favorite season. But, I do struggle with how quickly the season seems to pass. Summer seemed to start early and last too long, now winter is apparently here already. Every store seems to have access to the same secret calendar because, though winter decorations have been out on store shelves for months, they seemingly simultaneously ramp up

the seasonal flair during the final months of the year. Orange and maroon hues are suddenly gone and greens and blues are everywhere. I love how, even in Texas where it’s sunny and 80 degrees, we decorate with snow and snowmen. But though the decor changes, how much do our lives really change as we head into winter? How much does the change of seasons change our routines? Are you one to decorate seasonally? My family enforces a strict no-Christmas-decoration policy until the Friday after Thanksgiving so, for us pumpkins and plaid stay around until an acceptable amount of time has passed after the plates are cleaned Thanksgiving night. It’s also around this time when I begin to both anticipate and dread the upcoming task of hanging lights outside. I know some folks who have different decorations for fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and

New Year’s, and others who keep the same style year-round. Do you decorate differently in winter? Do your meals change? Do you find that meals start switching over from quick, light dishes like hamburgers, fresh veggies, and tacos to heavy warm things like soups, roasts, and potatoes? Or are you searching for crisp salads? Has the excitement of cinnamon and nutmeg faded already? I find myself reaching more for citrus, brassicas, and cheese during this transition out of fall. To kick my soda habit I've been trying to drink seasonally. Not eggnog and Mai Tais, but juices that match the season.. For fall I switched my lemonade and berry juices for cranberry and apple juice. And this season I’ve loved keeping a pot of wassail (a warmed, spiced apple cider drink) in my slow cooker during the day for the wonderful aromas and a quick cozy drink. But hot chocolate season is quickly approaching! And now I’m stocking up on pomegranate and orange juice. Speaking of change, you can’t forget about the time change that happens each year around this time. It throws me

off every year! It gets dark so soon! Plus I always feel like I have to readjust my sleep schedule and morning routine to motivate myself to get up and moving in total darkness. Then, when it feels like it’s already getting dark at 5:00p.m., it totally changes the pace of our evenings. Is it really winter already? Can’t we hold off a little longer? It depends on how to look at it. Go by the calendar and winter starts in late December. Go by the holidays and it starts in November. Wait for the seasons to change and who knows! Though it feels like the coldest parts of our winter here in this part of Texas are still ahead of us, usually coming in January and February. I will admit this part of the year is full of the festive winter celebrations that mean so much to me and my family. Each season brings with it a change of weather, a change of pace, and a change of scenery. Maybe not at the exact time you want but, the change will happen. I love that the change of seasons is more than just an effect of the differences in light as our planet travels around the sun. It’s an opportunity to enjoy, embrace, and live in the present moment.

November is national gratitude month November is one of my favorite times of the year because it is National Gratitude Month! Although there’s much to be grateful for all year long, I take November as a time to reflect, reset and especially to love all the activities that aid me in adding more people and things for which to be appreciative. If you’re looking to improve or find new meaning to your life, showing gratitude is the simplest and most powerful way to do it. I was first introduced to this life-changing activity at a real estate meeting I attended. I remember it started with writing a list of the things you are grateful for, such as family, friends, clients, etc. and thought, since I already know what I’m thankful for, why should I write this down? But, as I participated by listing a few things, I remember getting an unknown feeling and now that I look back, it was unknowingly

prescient as that was the last day of my old life and the first day of a new way of life. I know it sounds wild, but it’s my truth. When I further investigated activities I could do all month long, it seemed easy, wasn’t timeconsuming and the cost was minimal. Next thing you know, it was past November, and I was still following through with the activities. Why? Why was I still doing nice things, journaling, and writing letters when it wasn’t mandatory? Remember earlier I mentioned a feeling I had? Well, here comes the AHA moment. The feeling was “Gratitude.” It was a wholesome, serene, and genuine feeling. My mindset was changing, and my heart was softening. I couldn’t believe it! Since I started this journey, my life has changed for the better. This activity doesn’t mean that your life will be perfect or that you’ll win the

lottery, however, it will allow you to see the world through a different lens to know that to be successful you don’t have to make a certain amount of money, or to find love - you don’t have to have a certain body type, or to even be a good REALTOR® and you don’t have to sell X amount of houses. These activities will open your heart to know that you are great just the way you are, it will motivate you to work harder without even knowing it because you love what you’re doing and that you are beautiful from the inside first. Here’s a list of things you can do to participate: Offer a helping hand to someone in need, a coworker, neighbor, stranger. Everyday write 3 things you are grateful for. Send a surprise gift to someone, such as a gift card, a handwritten letter, or share time over a cup of coffee. Set a daily intention for your day. What is it that you want to accomplish today? Volunteer your time with an organization, your kids' school or with your religious organization and always do something nice for yourself. It doesn’t have to be an expensive activity, it can be a walk in the park, reading a book and/or cleaning and changing your office area with a new picture or desk accessory. You

can also find an online 30-day Gratitude challenge to join. This would be helpful if you need a little motivation or reminder. If you’re ready to embark on this journey I encourage you to participate this November and find things that will make you happy, while helping others. By the time you know, you’ll be attracting and not chasing. And for NARPM here is our November calendar of events: Nov 01- Executive Board Meeting Nov 07- SABOR Leasing & Property Management Committee Meeting Nov 08- 2023 Legislative Session Recap w/ Julia Parenteau & Seth Juergens Nov 16Bowling for NARPM PAC *2023 will be filled with new educational classes, speakers, and more opportunities for charitable events. HAPPY CRITIC

Karen Evans / Contributing Writer

For The Love Of Art & Food! Welcome to The Happy Critic Column I created for folks who love extraordinary experiences. I use uplifting words to draw attention to remarkable people and their stories about art, food, and drink. I concocted this fun, quick list of the tastiest and most memorable wines, eateries, and galleries I visited in the past year; I hope you will pop in these establishments and let them know the Happy Critic sent you! I share only the best! LOVING IMPERFECTION Flight is home to the hottest contemporary artwork in San Antonio. Artist Justin Parr & his Flight Gallery are both cool & hip, featuring the work of emerging and established artists. Flight has been open since 2002 and hosts new shows every month on First Thursday & First Friday. Another cool thing about Justin Parr is that he is the caretaker and artist-in-residence at Hot Wells Hotel ruins, creator & manager at Camp Hotwells, and is a really accomplished glass blower, photographer, and artist. "If you ever get a chance to meet this man in person, do not let the opportunity pass you by. Wicked smart and a genuine heart."

Here's to Art! Here's to Love! 112R Blue Star 210-872-2586 CHEERS TO 50 YEARS! Congratulations Cappy & Trevor Lawton! I bet you didn't know that Cappy's has 40+ varieties of bourbon! Order the Rose Manhattan with rye whiskey! Every single thing on Cappy's menu is superb. Order the lemon pepper potato chips with your meal, and it just added ten more stars! Sit inside with the art! Drink their great wine. Enjoy the outstanding servers; they are impeccably groomed and always smiling. Cappy's goal is to be the best restaurant in San Antonio. Serving us for 50 years, he has never disappointed, and I can say Cappy's is a San Antonio favorite. 5011 Broadway in Alamo Heights 210-828-9669 FRENCH FLING Recently, on a fun trip to Seguin with Megan & Glynn Ann, we discovered a jewel of a winery, Windmill Farm, owned by Randy and Robin Richter. They have over 30 hand-crafted wines available for tasting and purchasing. Ryan and Robin converted a hundredyear-old barn into a cool tasting room. The outside is lovely, with colorful

Real Estate Newsline

tables, painted rocks, a church, and stools made from tractor seats. They have delicious charcuterie boards and fantastic shopping. They have some fun names like Donkey Barn Merlot, Geronimo Red, and Navarro Nectar on their menu, and the wines are delicious. We are returning to be a Wine Maker for a Day at Windmill Farm Winery in November! Pick your favorite wine from their menu and blend your own. My favorite was the French Fling Rose. Christmas presents! We are looking forward to trying their bubbles in the future! 9111 Huber Rd 830-360-4334 PROST If you are looking for a way to connect with others who share your love of German food, camaraderie, and music, look no further. Becoming a member of the Beethoven Mannechor was a great decision on my part. Beethoven Mannerchor exists to preserve German song, music, and language. It is a German music society dating back to the 1860s. I love their food! Their brats, beer, and melt-in-yourmouth authentic ruben sandwiches are King of the menu and over-the-top wonderful. Don't forget your beer stein, dirndl, and lederhosen for a fun-filled day of German food, beer, and music. Seating is communal style with long( 25+ft) tables in rows where you will quickly get to know your neighbors! The nicest people in the world call this place home. Every time I visit, I make at least two new friends. It's like a magnate for warm, welcoming souls. 422 Pereida in King William (Visitors are welcome without a membership.)

LA FAMILIA CORTEZ Mi Tierra, a San Antonio institution, has been my happy place for as long as I can remember! The ceilings decorated with festive papel picado and pinatas brighten my day the moment I step inside. My favorite mural, "American Deam," has been a work in progress for over a quarter of a century. For 22 years under the stewardship of artist-in-residence Robert Ytarte, the mural features more than 100 influential Latinos who left their mark on our community. My blessed Artist Gilbert Duran is one of those icons featured in this unforgettable mural. I encourage you to visit often. The "American Dream" is pure happiness. The Mariachi Bar! The perfect, romantic date place tucked into the side of the restaurant where you can celebrate creative margaritas, beautiful art, and the strolling troubadours every night! The Coctel de Camarones is an elegant Mexican Shrimp Cocktail chilled with giant shrimp, cucumber, avocados, and a spicy tomato sauce that tastes exquisite. It's a dish not to be missed. I order it every time! "Familia is at the root of all things, and we're blessed to have generations of hard-working team members in our restaurants carrying the torch." 218 Produce Row in Market Square - 210-225-1262 San Antonio has excellent food and art. These are some of my favorites. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I have! Karen@renewsline.com
