What Do You Know Of The History Of Fireworks? Named for Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, the month of July has arrived for the year 2022 and, much to the chagrin of my puppies, Maggie and Kimmie, it means that the “noisy and scary” fireworks will soon begin in celebration of the 4th day of the month, also known as Independence Day. Initially, fireworks were used to celebrate the new year or lunar year but were later found useful in celebrating other major events or remembrances like birthdays, weddings or anniversaries. So how is it that these noisy little fireworks seem to be everywhere now? I am pretty sure that most folks know or have at least heard that fireworks originated in China and like most inventions, came about through a series of accidental incidents. It was in the early 200s BC , during the Han dynasty, when it was discovered that through the relatively rudimentary activity of tossing pieces of bamboo into a fire produced explosions of sorts that were considered effective for warding off evil spirits, and I would guess for scaring the elderly too! When the moisture and sap within the air pockets in bamboo cook off in the heat, they create a pressure-driven explosion and make loud crackling sounds, thus the “bàozhú”, Chinese for firecracker (from “bàozha” - to explode and “zhu” - bamboo) was born. The timeline for the actual discovery of explosives is rather confusing as some say it was a cook who accidently spilled saltpeter into a fire creating a very loud explosion two thousand years ago while others claim it was alchemists searching for the means to eternal life, who mixed charcoal with sulfur and potassium nitrate and when this mixture accidentally caught fire, gunpowder was created. However, many historians also credit a Chinese monk named Li Tian living in the Hunan Province during the Song dynasty (960
AD – 1279 AD)with stuffing a gunpowder mixture into the bamboo shoots and later into paper tubes with creating the actual fireworks. From that point on it was easy to see that by adding a little gunpowder to a container you produce a firecracker, add a lot and you create a bomb but if the large amount was added to a strong open-ended container you had a cannon! Fireworks in the early years were suitable for religious purposes and, as noted above, were just thrown into a fire, producing no color and were just a simple series of small and loud noise (“gung pow” or “bian pow”) ground explosions which were not propelled into the air. However, with the advent of gunpowder being added to the fireworks the Chinese were able to produce wooden, rocket-powered arrows that were hand-carved into dragon shapes and used in their attempt to repel the Mongols when they invaded China in 1279 AD. It did not take long for explorers to learn of the gunpowder and its potential when combined with fireworks and rockets, and were soon bringing that information back to India and Arabia in the seventh century, where the rockets were referred to as “Chinese flowers.” Marco Polo is credited with Europe’s being made aware of gunpowder and its uses by the 13th century and, of course, those involved in the Crusades which occurred primarily in the Middle East from 1096 AD to 1444 AD would have obtained the same information. As you can imagine once the word spread throughout the world, every nation facing war started the work to improve their edge by turning out better gunpowder mixtures and more powerful weapons, especially with the advent of guns being invented by the beginning of the 13th century. But these improvements in gunpowder also had a major impact on how fireworks were
going to be produced from that time forward. For example, it was found that by adding one or more of various metals to the gunpowder, different colors could be created upon impact of the particular fireworks product and there continued to be major improvements in how the fireworks were being launched. As a result the new profession for pyrotechnicians came into being and they have been defined as experts in working with fireworks (small containers filled with explosive chemicals that produce bright colored patterns or loud noises when they explode) for public displays or for film sets. According to Wikipedia, “this trade relies upon self-contained and self-sustained exothermic chemical reactions to make heat, light, gas, smoke and/or sound.” The name comes from the Greek words pyr ("fire") and tekhnikos ("made by art").” By the 15th century, fireworks had become a traditional part of celebrations, such as military victories, weddings and commemorative dates. The pyrotechnics of today make use of a number of the salts of the various metals that are considered to be non-toxic enough for safe use. For example adding lithium will create a medium red but with strontium the color will be an intense red; calcium yields orange; sodium - yellow; barium green; copper - blue; rubidium - violet-red; caesium - indigo and potassium – violet, to name a few. Now, with that information the next time you are watching a pyrotechnic display with your family and friends, and you see an intense blue, you can impress them by saying, “Wow, just the right amount of copper in that one!” The varieties of fireworks today are numerous and come in all shapes and sizes to produce a wide spectrum of features. Globally, most countries use pyrotechnic displays to celebrate the annual arrival of the
new year in their particular time zone and some will also celebrate a day or event that is significant for their country alone. For that reason you can be sure that the pyrotechnicians have been quite busy these last several months preparing for the spectacular displays expected on the Fourth of July in the United States. Independence Day commemorates the day the final version of the Declaration of Independence was adopted by representatives from the 13 original states, on July 4, 1776, during the convention of the 2nd Continental Congress in Philadelphia. By 1776 the war between the colonies and England had been going on for a year and the colonies had had enough. Richard Henry Lee, the representative from Virginia officially offered, "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved." And so it was! Independence Day was officially established as a holiday by Congress in 1840 and later in 1938 they affirmed it was a paid holiday for federal employees. Today the celebrations usually include parades and/or pyrotechnic displays in some cities while families and friends may join together for barbeques or picnics and just relax for the day. One thing though you can be assured of is that whether or not there is an organized pyrotechnic display there will be neighbors who have their own fireworks to ignite whether it is legal or not. For those of you who have pets take heart as silent fireworks are becoming popular and in coming years will provide all the beauty without it sounding like warfare has just erupted. SABOR Members Give Back The Great SABOR Food Fight wrapped up in June. A total of 9,301 donations were brought in by 21 companies. Congratulations to Keller Williams Heritage for being the 1st place in the tier 1 category. They brought more than 15-hundred boxes of cereal. RE/MAX Associates was the 1st place winner in the tier 2 category, with more than 17-hundred donations of mac & cheese. Finally, RE/MAX Alamo Realty took 1st place in the tier 3 category with more than 11-hundred bags of rice. Thank you to all the companies that participated this year. All your donations are benefitting the San Antonio Food Bank and the thousands of families they help on a weekly basis. The acts of service do not stop
there. Also in June, nearly 100 SABOR members participated in NAR’s REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors Volunteer Days. This year, we helped four organizations including the San Antonio Food Bank, Texas Diaper Bank, San Antonio ISD, and Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Antonio. Members did a variety of tasks including sorting and packaging diapers and food, organizing pantries, planting flowers, and donating school supplies. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s food drive and volunteer days. SABOR is proud to have members that care. Thank you for helping make a difference in our community!

NFT -- Not For Touching As hard as it is to stay current in this changing universe, sometimes you can’t help but dip your toe into the oncoming clash of the future verses the now. The past, we can all agree, cannot save us, no matter how hard we to attempt to bring back the rotary dial telephone. Recently, at a luncheon of some high-powered art collectors, I sat next to the highest power in the room. It was just a fluke we sat together. I was attempting to be a fly-on-the-wall to learn about art collection and he was attempting ‘hide’ among his peers. I must have looked like a safe bet of know-nothing that would not disturb his thought process. As one does in awkward luncheon situations, we began a conversation to establish common ground. Turns out, I knew very little about a lot and he knew a lot about the littlest items. The conversation drifted into NFT’s (Non-Fungible Tokens). My lack of knowledge lit his fire and suddenly I was immersed with information I was
not sure I needed in my limited memory bank. He immediately defined the touchless NFT: An NFT is a digital asset that represents real-world objects like art, music, in-game items, and videos. They are bought and sold online, frequently with cryptocurrency. They are encoded with some underlying software referred to as a block chain or not. Only the owner of the secret crypto-code can access the treasure. Lose your encrypted block chain code of secrecy and you lose everything. I asked for another glass of wine. Touching, admiring, and moving stuff around is the fun of collecting. Granted the current ‘collection’ of things in my living space is a bit out of control, but there are bits and pieces of art, jewelry, antiques, and generic junk that have great value to me. Someday, it might have great value to relatives down the generic DNA chain, but I have no doubt few strangers will pick up great deals in a garage sale. At least

the relatives will get something. Apparently, if I collected NFT’s and if I die with no hint of how to access my ‘blockchain network’, my collection of NFT’s would be of ZERO value. My new friend became very animated explaining to me why I should ‘invest’ in NFT’s instead of actual art. What if there is a fire or flood? What if a tornado ripped through my dwelling? What if there was a burglary? What if someone accidentally damaged my art? He was confident investing in NFT’s solved all the what ifs of life. I mentioned this is what insurance is for and I was getting depressed visiting with him about all the devastating things that what-if-might-happen when after six decades of living none of those things have happened to me. When I mentioned insurance, he choked on his wine and went into a tirade about the scam of insurance. Another glass of wine for me please. To be clear, I asked him, I would use cryptocurrency (invisible money) to purchase an NFT (invisible art) to have so no one else could see it? He lit up again. “Honey,” he began,“you will have it as a picture on your device. You can look at it anytime and you can show it to anyone you want. It will always be there.” My what-if conversation kicked in: What if the battery died on my phone just as I needed the NFT to appear? What if my super-secret crypto password block chain thingy was hacked by a 13-year-old in his great aunt’s garage? What if the pixels

of my NFT de-pixelated and my colors were compromised? What if I wanted to negotiate my bitcoin payment—how do you get change for a bitcoin? What if I knew what any of this meant? Now on his third glass of wine, he was not giving up on my NFT conversion. “Honey,” he began again,“you make it too complicated. The future is now. You must move forward and embrace what is here. You cannot be left behind. Those in first make the most of their investment.” Here was the difference in our conversation, he was ‘in it’ to make a profit. I wanted to collect and own more stuff people could actually admire while I was serving cocktails and making small talk. I realized you cannot serve cocktails and hold your mobile device at the same time to allow someone to admire your purchase on the small screen. I sat there in quite thought, still confused about why NFT’s are such a valuable commodity. Why can I not understand the value of owning nothing you pay for with nothing? The kind barkeep came around with more wine. I put a tip on her tray and looked at my lunch companion. “Say what you want, the world still needs cash to go round,” I told him. I thought he might tip her as well, but his phone wallet was frozen. I think he was going to Zelle her so he could get her ‘number’, but she already had what she needed. His number was not of interest to her. I gave her another five spot and left the table.

My Top 5 Favorite Places In San Antonio San Antonio, my ever-changing city, is growing in many different directions. For me, change can be challenging but also glorious. Tucked away in my precious memories are restaurants and businesses that have since closed over the past three decades. The San Francisco Steakhouse, Little Hipps, The Night Hawk, L'etoille, Scriveners, Joske's, and Frost Brothers, to name a few, were iconic places I will never forget. I could write fantastic stories about each place, but that is another day. And then there are the fantastic transformations of "MyTop 5 Favorite Places in San Antonio!" Listed below in the order that I met them are places that have endured, evolved, and improved with age, grown up with the times, and continue to shine. I hope you can find the time to enjoy these true jewels in a city that never stops creating magnificent experiences for her community. Live Life! Trinity Baptist Church, God's lighthouse on a hill, has served this community since its doors opened in 1949 as the new "Baptist Church of the Future ."I see it as a
blessing that God chose me to grow up in this church and continue my life journey here, safe and surrounded by a warm and loving church family. Growing up, I would rather be at church than anywhere else. I heard thousands of powerful sermons preached weekly by the great Reverend Buckner Fanning, Charlie Johnson, and Les Hollon that improved my feelings, actions, and thinking. The beautiful campus has evolved into a magnificent retreat where folks can find a place to make a difference and fulfill their life mission. I encourage everyone to visit the sanctuary to gaze at the stunning stained glass window above the baptistery created by artist Ruth Dunn in 1960. It is the most magnificent stained glass window in ten counties. Trinity's steeple has been the church's most visible and recognizable feature propped on top of the beautiful sanctuary filled with glorious music for the entire community to enjoy in the Fanning Foyer. trinitybaptist.org The Zoo & Brackenridge Park is where my mother took my brother and me weekly for entertainment and learning. We learned about animal temperaments, feeding, smells, colors, habits, and love. It became my

thing to take pictures of the animals mating over the years, and it was a miracle to see the birth of a baby hippo. I have continued visiting every spring and fall with enthusiasm and love meeting all the new babies. Picnicking is my ritual in Brackenridge Park, followed by a fantastic train ride so adults can be kids! The Zoo grounds has added more great sculpture surrounded by spacious walkways, benches, and shaded areas with beautiful plants and flowers. Hanging out with the Texas Butterflies has become a favorite. Since 1899 the San Antonio Zoo and Park has provided a haven for folks to enjoy camaraderie with nature. sazoo.org
same as back in the day. Still visually beautiful, under the ceiling of perfectly painted clouds, it is a wonderful hodge podge of vintage memorabilia collected over the years by the owner. The sweet murals on the outside wall and in the bar are fantastic reminders that art makes everything better. The vintage couch to the right of the door is still "my comfy couch." My favorite new outdoor patio under the old oak tree reminds me of picnicking and reminiscing with friends over a beer, with burgers and perfectly salted tots. The HemisFair Tower & Park was my first architectural experience as a ten-yearold. I watched the Tower being built from the downtown streets of San Antonio back in the sixties while at the same time watching the historical Hilton Hotel being built. It was fascinating and unforgettable. Then the excitement of riding in the elevators to great heights is still a thrill. The Tower gave San Antonio greatness. I still love going to the Tower for the best Happy in Town with live music overlooking our magnificent city. The HemisFair Park has become one of the most beautiful and engaging areas San Antonio offers. Central Market is my favorite place to shop in San Antonio for my favorite things! A cooks paradise, a foodie destination, and a gourmands dream featuring cheeses from around the world, fresh east coast oysters, pulpo so beautiful my mouth waters, thick marinated pork belly, and a stunning array of fresh produce and fruit. I have been exploring Central Market almost daily since its grand opening in 1997 because it makes me happy when I buy their products to use in my recipes as I feel they are such high quality, and I know my food will be delicious. “Dressing For Success” Is It Still Relevant? So much has changed since covid, and the way we dress is at the top of the list. Is dressing for success still a thing? I mean, for two and a half years, we’ve had the opportunity to be on zoom in half dress or in pajamas for some. After that, how can you expect me to put back on that stiff collared blouse with the scratchy blazer and the two sizes too small pants with those painful pinching heels? You are not the only one. I’ve been dressing more in a vacation vibe lately instead of “Conquering the world” attire. Either way, subconsciously or not, we are emulating our desires. Since covid and especially after having my turn of covid, in February 2022, my “Why?” in personal and business life have dramatically changed and I can see the change in my attire. I’m all about the flowy, tropical patterns, beachy colored shoes and wild hair, don’t care vibes all day long. Now, remember we are still conducting business and have a goal to reach on a daily basis. We really don’t want to scare off our business partners or clients and make them think we don’t care anymore. As
someone who loves fashion, I think that you can still have fun while looking appropriate for work. Wear that beachy flowy dress and add a blazer to make a significant difference. After your appointment, fling the blazer off in your car and get back to your Margaritaville attitude. According to an article in Forbes, Dress For Success? Pandemic Life is Changing What Success Looks Like (May 12, 2021), it mentions that in one study, over 60% of employees were more productive with a relaxed dress code. And in Bazaar’s article, How Dress for Success is Serving Women During the Coronavirus Pandemic (April 27, 2020), Dressing for success is still a thing, in fact, during the pandemic so many people lost employment and now found themselves looking for what seemed to be an impossible feat of looking for work. Amid all the confusion, the organization, Dress for Success decided not to close their doors to their clients completely and continued their mission by going digital.
