Odd Or Amusing Historical Events Or Practices Are you certain that all of the historical facts you have learned, heard or read over the years are actually true and not a myth? Often stories carried down thru the ages are based on fact and in other cases are just myths and yet they are taken as the gospel truth. One thing though is certain - some historical events can be rather odd or at least amusing whether they are true or not. Found on the internet in an article under United States Secret Service: A Chronicle of Carriages is the following: “In December 1941, Franklin Roosevelt became the first President to use an armored vehicle. Originally belonging to infamous gangster Al Capone, the car was seized by the Treasury Department in 1932 on an income-tax evasion charge. The car's armor actually was comprised of only bulletproof glass; the body of the car was still vulnerable.” Reference to the use of Capone’s car can also be found in a published book by Michael Reilly, FDR’s Secret Service man and was featured in a CBS photo display with the article at that time stating, “After the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt made use of a heavily armored Cadillac that was originally owned by gangster Al Capone until the Sunshine Special could be modified with armor plating, bulletproof glass, and sub-machine gun storage.” The weird incident of Roosevelt being chauffeured in Al Capone’s Cadillac has been proven false as the car was not confiscated but rather sold multiple times, originally by his family. Since the Nationalist Party in Germany, and later the Nazis, established the swastika symbol to represent what they stood for while they were overrunning other European nations, it has come to be viewed as a symbol of hate and since WW II has been

banned from being displayed publicly in Germany and Austria. Archaeologists have found evidence of the symbol’s existence as far back as 6,000 BC , but some sources say the swastika could date back as far as 12,000 years. It would have been found very early throughout Eurasia as it was a symbol of religious significance, sacred to the Greeks and Romans and was an icon at both Eastern and Western branches of Christian churches. And although it is uncertain as to how the swastika became so globally prominent, even the ancient Indian tribes in North America, from the Northeast to the Southwest used the swastika as part of their symbols. Despite its degradation post 1940s there is evidence the swastika is still in use in mosaics, in ceiling and floor tiles, friezes, stained glass windows, artwork, and altars in churches of the Gothic period and it still decorates the elephants at Carlsberg’s in Copenhagen. Not everything is a myth! And then there is the legend of “Unsinkable Sam,” the cat that survived the sinking of three ships. As the story goes a crewman from the German warship Bismarck either owned or picked up a black and white cat (named Oskar) on his way back to his ship which was manned by a crew of 2,200. Since WW II was in full swing at the time, the Bismarck was damaged during the Battle of the Denmark Strait and was on its way to port for repairs when it was bombarded by British ships and torpedo aircraft and finally sank on May 19, 1941. The HMS Cossack, attempted to rescue the 119 survivors of the Bismarck and spotted the cat floating on a plank and took him aboard. Several months later the HMS Cossack was torpedoed by a German ship and it too sank. Once again the cat was rescued by a crew from the aircraft carrier, HMS Ark

Royal, which, on November 19, 1941, was also torpedoed; however the cat was unharmed and was rescued for a third time by a crew from the HMS Legion and after that lived out the remainder of his nine lives in retirement with a seaman in Belfast. There is dispute over whether this is just a sea story or if it is actually true. While on the subject of ships there is also the story of the “unsinkable” Violet Jessop who was a stewardess aboard White Star’s RMS Olympic, which in 1911 was the largest ship on the seas. The Olympic collided with the Royal Navy cruiser Hawke and while both ships returned to port damaged neither sank and young Jessop was unharmed. In April of the following year she joined the crew of another of White Star’s largest ship afloat, the RMS Titanic - and we know what happened on the maiden voyage of that ship. After being loaded into a lifeboat as the Titanic sank Jessop and the fellow survivors in her lifeboat were rescued by the crew of the RMS Carpathia. Violet remained in the employ of White Star and in 1916 was part of the crew of the HMHS Britannic which was operating as a hospital ship of His Majesty’s Navy in the Aegean Sea when, either a mine or a torpedo, ripped the ship apart. Although the Britannic sank in less than an hour, Jessop survived the sinking, garnering only a slight head injury and following those misadventures continued on to enjoy an accident-free career with White Star and other British shipping lines until she retired in 1950. There are many references which claim that the cocktail came about because during prohibition in the 1920s the alcohol served at speakeasies was of such poor quality that bartenders had to mix it with other flavorful juices and sweeteners to mask

its bad taste. While that might sound plausible, a manual entitled, Cocktail Boothby’s American Bar-Tender, created by a bartender at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, was available in 1891, and even before the Civil War the term cocktail referred to drinks that were mixed with bitters. Inspired by British punches, spirits that were mixed with fruit juices and spices, have been referenced as cocktails since as far back as March 1798 and mixed drinks themselves are easily traced back to the 17th century. Also of interest related to Prohibition - you may not be aware that despite the banning of alcohol, people continued to drink it, the U.S. government had industrial alcohol poisoned and it has been estimated that by the end of that period in history at least 10,000 people died as a result. And finally, while on the subject of alcohol, did you know that a drink that is very popular today was originally called Bucket of Blood and then Red Snapper before it was finally settled as a Bloody Mary, that a cocktail of citrus juice and brandy called The Brandy Daisy, was the forerunner of the Margarita (Spanish for Daisy), that the cocktail Screwdriver was so called by Persian Oil Workers because they used a screwdriver to stir the drink when they couldn’t find a spoon, that another drink was so named because of an 1874 prank in which someone was sent on a wild goose chase, going from bar to bar to find Tom Collins who had supposedly besmirched the searcher’s good name, that after he retired as president, George Washington established a whiskey distillery that was once the largest in the country, and that while celebrating the end of WW II, Russia totally ran out of Vodka in 22 hours? Sometimes truth can be stranger and more amusing than fiction!

THE WAY I SEE IT Cathey Meyer / Contributing Writer

Keeping Up Appearances 26.2. You have seen those bumper stickers, usually on the back of an environmentally friendly vehicle, announcing someone in the ride managed to complete a marathon. I am partial to the 13.1 folks. Those vehicles are a step up and you have to appreciate someone who is willing to advertise they only put in half the effort. My bumper sticker number is much higher: 62.9. Let us be clear, that is NOT a milage number for NIKE road warrior wear and it would be slapped on the back of a high-end Toyota. My number, sixty-two point nine is the timeline it took me to realize there comes a point in life when your appearance is irrelevant. I am finally at the age where I am invisible, an elder power I now cherish. I come from a long line of women that were always very careful about their public appearance. Grandma Meyer never left her house without stockings (the days before pantyhose), her best Montgomery Ward frock (google Montgomery Ward), pearls (faux of

course), lipstick (as red as she could find), a half can of hairspray (Aquanet), and a hat to protect her weathered skin from the sun (too late!). Grandmother Caldwell possessed an equally proud public appearance. All her life, she was a style maven. Even in her days in assisted living, every hair in place, make-up understated and perfect, wardrobe seasonally appropriate. Alas, they lived in a time when our elders were noticed and respected. I doubt my golden years will be a reflection of their time in the public eye. I do my best not to frighten small children with my public appearance. I also attempt to avoid eye rolls from passing TicTockers. I know cosmetics will make the girl at any age and I put in the effort to conceal the dark spots, shrink the pores, brighten the eyes and poof the lips. I keep the blond natural with regular appointments. I workout before dawn so no one has to see the bare minimum exposure. I attempt to color coordinate my wardrobe and avoid

Real Estate Newsline

wearing clashing, no-wrinkle prints. I try to keep my sensible footwear as stylish as possible and always keep my pedicure appointments requesting the hip colors for my toes. I thought I was rocking through the universe until a series of unfortunate events brought me into aging reality. In a fit of hunger after a pre-dawn walk, my partner talked me into dashing off for breakfast at an upscale hotel. He was famished and claimed I looked ‘fine’ in my after-glow walk. No make-up, root bound hair, workout wear of questionable coordination and no accessories, but he was fine venturing out in public with me and off we went. Turns out, when you do not know what you look like, you possess great confidence—at least until reality hits you in the face. Our regular waiter came to seat us and immediately asked if I was alright. He realized his tip was hanging in the balance and quickly turned to seat us—near the back of the restaurant. I caught a glimpse of my pre-public routine and must admit, it was a fright fest. Interestingly enough, I was almost invisible to anyone in the room. Very few nods from passing guests, fewer passes for the coffee refill, small children covered their faces as they passed. While I was not proud of my public appearance, I began to embrace the experiment. All these years I worried how I looked in public and it turns out, no one else really cared about my effort; they just looked the other way. My partner claimed I was imagining all

7

this as the service was the same as always. I was being hyper critical. Was I? So began my little appearance experiment. Because I apparently do not have better things to ponder, I began paying attention to who was paying attention to me. I remembered back to the days of inappropriate cat calls as I walked, jogged, or biked through the public streets. Then I tried to remember the last time anyone whistled at me and sadly realized it had been years (maybe decades). This old lady was no longer whistle meat. Old men now refer to me as Ma’am. Sweetheart, honey and darlin’ were all history. Not that any of that was acceptable behavior, but back in the day it was an ego boost. Store clerks now size me up as to my purchase power and may or may not offer help. Granted good help is hard to come by these days, but elder help is a step below. I now realize I can venture out naked and the only comment I would get might be to watch my step. No one really cares how you look anymore. Rest assured I am not venturing out sans a stunning wardrobe anytime soon and now I understand I am public prepping just for me. Thank you to the grandmas for keeping up appearances and passing the gene along to me. I am now the old lady who thinks,“You are wearing what?!” but I am still young enough to keep those thoughts to myself.

GUEST COLUMN Karen Evans / Contributing Writer

San Fernando Cathedral In the heart of San Antonio lives the Spanish Colonial-Gothic Revival San Fernando Cathedral, founded on March 9, 1731. As the first church in the city and the only church for 95 years, San Fernando served all of the religious denominations of San Antonio. Before Texas' independence, the Catholic Church was the only recognized religion of the Spanish and Mexican governments. The oldest continuously operating Cathedral in the Lone Star State is also considered the oldest continuously operating Catholic Church in the United States. It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the archbishop's seat. The Cathedral is the center point of Catholic religious life in San Antonio and the city's geographical, cultural and social center. King Fernando III of Castille, who ruled during the 13th century, is the namesake of this historic Cathedral. He is known for his peaceful coexistence with Christians, Muslims, and Jews. He was declared a Saint in 1671, and many believe that San Antonio's incredible culture came about because of his influence. The Cathedral is also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Candelaria and Guadalupe.

The church's breathtaking interior includes the historical gift of The Virgin of Candelaria statue, the patron saint of the Canary Islands, from King Phillip V of Spain, who ordered the original settlers to immigrate to "The New World ."They brought the Virgin statue with them on their rigorous trek to remind them of their culture and to bestow blessings on the future of their new home. The Virgin is commonly referred to as La Morenita and is portrayed as a Black Madonna. She is a treasured gift from the government of the Canary Islands in honor and recognition of the first 15 Canary Island families. They founded San Fernando de Bexar Catholic Church, which then developed into the City of San Antonio. The Canary Islands government continues to care for the statue by supplying the robes for the Virgin. In 1831 James Bowie married Maria de Veramendi, the beautiful young daughter of his business partner and the governor of Coahuila and Tejas, at The San Fernando Cathedral on April 25, 1831. Sadly in 1833, his young bride and two small children were struck dead by a cholera epidemic that swept through northern Mexico. Bowie never recovered from his grief, and the rest is history. "The Battle of the Alamo

Real Estate Newsline

Survivor Susanna Dickinson Hannig stated that Bowie was sick in bed, and when the Mexican soldiers entered his room,...he killed two of them with his pistols before they pierced him through with their sabers." The church played a significant role in the Battle of The Alamo in 1836. The beginning of the siege was marked by a red flag raised on the Cathedral's tower by Santa Ana with written words "no quarter," meaning no mercy and take no prisoners if the Texians did not surrender. Mexican cannons stood on the roof. When the Texians won their Independence from Mexico at The Battle of San Jacinto a month later, they returned to San Fernando Cathedral to fly their victory flag! After the savage Santa Ana burned the bodies of the defenders of the Alamo in 1836, Col. Juan Seguin found the defenders' ashes in three places on the battleground. He buried their remains within the San Fernando Cathedral. Many believe that the remains of David Crockett, James Bowie, William B Travis, and other Alamo Heroes are interred in the chapel at the left-hand side of the entrance to the Cathedral. In 1987 on Sunday, September 13, the Blessed Pope John Paul II visited San Antonio for 22 hours. One of his scheduled stops was at San Fernando Cathedral, where he addressed seminary students preparing for religious life. A oncein-a-lifetime experience for these future priests, the Pope's message was eloquent "Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord: it is a deep joy for me to be with you today in this historic Cathedral of San Fernando, the oldest cathedral sanctuary in the United States, It is with great gratitude to God that I meet you who are preparing to serve the Lord as priests, you who singularly and remarkably have, like Moses, heard the voice of God

15

calling you to that holy ground of a special vocation in the Church ." A magnificent statue stands tall inside the Cathedral, sculpted by artist Iwona Kosciuch of Pope John Paul II to commemorate his visit on All Saints Day on November 1, 2012. In 2014 World Renowned French Artist Xavier de Richemont installed an essential work of art on American soil, "San Antonio-The Saga," a brilliant masterpiece created for the oldest Catholic Cathedral in the USA. A 24-minute video art projection and light show depicting 300 years of fascinating San Antonio and American history take the viewer on a colorful journey displayed on the 7000-square-foot facade of the Cathedral. It educates tourists about San Antonio's history and reminds locals about their roots. The best thing is it is free to attend! Grab your blanket, picnic basket, family, and friends, and find a comfortable spot in Main Plaza and enjoy this aweinspiring event. Today the San Fernando Cathedral isn't just a sanctuary that provides a place for worship; it has become the ecumenical, cultural, civic, and service center for San Antonio. Recently, a Memorial Mass was celebrated to honor 53 immigrants who died tragically after being abandoned in the back of a trailer truck. Clergy from San Fernando and other faith leaders from around the city gathered to pray for and remember all the men, women, and children who have died after leaving their homelands in search of a better life. The San Fernando Cathedral engages with the best musical talent from around the world in the sanctuary with Musical Bridges Around The World, Mariachi Mass, and The San Antonio Symphony. These beautiful concerts are free and open to the public. 115 Main Plaza / 210-227-1297 / sfcathedral.org

Since its humble roots in 2003, Legacy Mutual Mortgage has been serving the home loan needs of homebuyers, real estate professionals and builders. As a full-service mortgage loan company backed by Texas Partners Bank, Legacy Mutual Mortgage has a wide array of products available to their clients—from conventional, FHA and VA loans to construction, cash-out refinance and jumbo lending. Legacy Mutual Mortgage began in San Antonio more than 16 years ago and has seen exponential growth, opening an array of offices throughout Texas and beyond. Office locations also include Austin, Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Denton, New Braunfels, Schertz and Boerne, as well as Nashville, Tennessee and Arvada, Colorado. While the company is growing quickly, it has remained committed to Outstanding customer, focused on continuing to grow and expand into other markets, at the right rate with the right people, to ensure they will always provide the same top quality service, professional expertise and personal involvement. With over 55 loan officers company-wide, Legacy remains focused on serving the realtor and referral partner

community and the end customer with “raving fan” type of service and partnership. When partnering with their real estate partners, Legacy Mutual loan officers make it a priority to provide additional value. The company provides monthly or bi-monthly classes on topics such as pertinent changes in the industry, how to use social media, the latest and greatest business technology tools, understanding credit and its impact on buying a home, and how to create and market to your database. Additionally, several Legacy Mutual loan officers are also coaches for The CORE Training group, have the ability to teach TREC continuing education courses and give educational talks to the various industry-related associations throughout the states they serve! Legacy Mutual Mortgage recently interviewed several Partner realtors. There were two things that were consistent across the board. First, the realtors felt that Legacy makes their work load less, and when they turn their clients over to our loan officers, they know the clients are taken care of. Additionally, realtors felt that working with Legacy means they don’t have to babysit the deal. The clients are communicated with, the right steps are happening and the deal will close on time, every time.
