THE WAY I SEE IT Cathey Meyer / Contributing Writer

Charitable Trash The blessings in my life have multiplied as I have grown older and allegedly wiser.Years of hard work, miser saving, and retirement panic have allowed me a bit of extra cash to share with others. Granted I have a few relatives who lobby to be my charitable causes, but I genuinely try to contribute to those organizations I hope have a much greater reach than I ever could. No one charity has ever been singled out by me as ‘the one’ that might some day receive a cash bonus at my last breath. Much like no one relative has earned that honor—yet. Plenty of years remain for both a charitable organization and/or a relative to lobby for whatever might be left over in my limited estate. In the meantime, I enjoy the random donation to organizations that during trying times or just times of everyday survival deserve a bit of extra cash in the budget. Sometimes the receiver might be one of the big guys, like the American Red Cross, the Food Bank, or the Salvation Army. All worthy organizations that provide help in everyday life and times of

extra need. Sometimes the receiver is an organization that made the news for some reason, a teacher just trying to make a difference, or a creative soul doing something cool to make the world a better place. If I had my choice, I would send cash anonymously and avoid being bombarded with the follow-up onslaught of send-us-more money campaigns. In 2002, I sent a memorial donation in memory of the wife of a business associate. We were not necessarily close friends, but as a work buddy, he was a stellar guy and I enjoyed his wife at social gatherings as she had an eye for fashion and wit to match. When she passed, the request of the family was to send a donation in her name to the local Humane Society. Not a passion charity for me as I have not had a pet since 1996. I know they do good work, and I was happy to fulfil the request with a very minimum donation. I never made another donation to them, but for TWENTY years, I continue to receive quarterly letters reminding me to please save the animals and by the way,

Real Estate Newsline

enclosed are my return address labels with cute puppies and kittens attached. By my estimation, they have way over spent my donation attempting to solicit more money from this empty pot. Yes, I notified them to take me off their recruiting list, but I think they think they can wear me down. Thanks for the free labels! The U.S. Post Office must have a running deal with the charitable hustle. I continually am the recipient of charitable requests from organizations I made a one time only donation. Like the pet people, they continue to stuff my mailbox with unwanted stuff attempting to guilt me into more money. I receive calendars, guardian angels, lucky pennies, personalized patriotic note pads, pens, and St. Jude medals. Somehow, if you give to one charity, they are very charitable in sharing your information with other charities to which I have never donated. Law enforcement dudes now harass me by phone to request a donation in exchange for a bumper sticker. Who even utilizes bumper stickers anymore? Do these folks not know about Twitter and Instagram? In times of disasters, I like the Red Cross, Food Bank and Salvation Army to get a little boast from me. They are good about only harassing me by mail a couple of times a year and even then, it is a thin envelope making a reasonable request. No starving children on the letter head, no hungry animals staring me down for $19 a month. My new game is my Charity Bingo Spread Sheet. Every charity on my donation list and my non-donation list

7

gets a customized bingo card for my tracking purposes. When the charity hits a bingo, the are on my charitable trash chart and their communications go directly to the trash bin. The charities that obviously spend my funds on actual charitable acts, continue to receive my support throughout the year. The less you contact me, the more you receive. Send me a handwritten thank you note and your donation doubles. Granted, in the big picture of bigtime donations, the powers that be do not care about my little donation game. I am not a big enough donor to make a dent in any organizational charity. I just ponder how successful they actually are at the mailbox game. What if they took a year, sent out nothing and repurposed all that manpower, stationery, freebie junk and postage back into their organization? Would they even out in funding or do they really generate big dollars annoying folks by mail? The charity ‘game’ is a multi-level game played on many levels. Most I assume are genuine in their intent to help those in need. Some I am sure are scamming for an easy buck. A few believe they are doing good work at a high dollar salary. For me, giving a small unexpected donation to make a difference to someone in need is what the world needs more of these days. I can only pay it forward and hope the donation lands where it is at its best use. I can only hope those in the hustle will heed the request to stop the trash train.

GUEST COLUMN Kimberly Adams / Contributing Writer

10 Glorious Fiesta Events! VIVA FIESTA! VIVA! I have missed during these crazy two years of distress. Welcome back, Fiesta friends and family, as we gear up for San Antonio's most anticipated cultural party! I am excited and thankful to share my thoughts and experiences on ten of my favorite events I have enjoyed over the past 50 years. I hope you will enjoy them as well. 1. The Battle of Flowers Parade is about a tradition that began 125 years ago and is still created entirely by a group of volunteer women dressed in bright yellow clothes. You have probably performed in this parade if you are a lifelong San Antonian. Me, I twirled and danced my way down Broadway. Making parade memories starts with beers at the Menger Bar, front row seats with Hermannsons Lodge, welcoming the Military Ambassadors, and shouting "show us your shoes" to the queens and duchesses in their exquisite gowns on the flower power floats.

This parade is a definite Fiesta highlight. 2. Fiesta Kings Cup Polo Party is a high-speed polo match with beautiful horses and Ursula Pari, a fancy hat contest, a VIP tent with luscious food, drinks, and Chamber of Commerce weather. An event you have to attend at least one time! 3. Night In Old San Antonio is for everyone, young and old! Every moment of it! The crowds of people, the anticuchos and escargot, the cracking of the cascarones, the Bolsa Booth, Frontier Town, and Polka dancing! I love it all! 4. If you have to choose a parade, this is the one! The Fiesta River Parade is an enchanting night parade with lights, bands, and beads. Watching the spectacle from the Chamber of Commerce or the Esquire Bar balconies with friends and family is a long-standing tradition. 5. Cornyation is "San Antonio's Outrageous Fiesta Tradition" and Fiesta San Antonio's "raunchiest,

Follow Us @renewsline cheapest event with a purpose. Whether celebrating at a table in the front of the Empire Theatre with friends or sitting in the balcony with my mother, it is a joy to be at Cornyation every year, anticipating the satirical skits mocking the elites and politicians. 6. Coronation of the Queen is the most elegant and dazzling Fiesta event you will ever attend. Presented by the Order of the Alamo each year to crown a new Queen and Princess, each Duchess has a one-of-a-kind dress and crown made by local dressmakers taking up to 150,000 hours. The Duchesses adorn their dresses in the Battle of Flowers and The Flambeau Parades. Another must go to the affair at least one time in your life! 7. King William Fair is about strolling through the most magnificent, historic neighborhood in San Antonio and visiting friends at their private party residences. The King William neighborhood streets are lined with booths of original art pieces, pottery, jewelry, and vendors visiting from places near and afar. Sitting in the park enjoying cold beer and music with friends makes for a memorable day. 8. Taste of the Republic kicks off Fiesta for me in a laid-back atmosphere. This year's event is at The Good Kind Event Center with Fiesta friends, fabulous food, and drinks. 9. Fiesta Arts Fair is a stroll through memory lane at the Southwest School of Art in the historic

1850's Ursuline Convent and Academy. The fair features work from over 100 contemporary artists, live music, and traditional Mexican food. This event is a Fiesta jewel! I attended the Arts and Crafts school back in the '70s and have fond memories of this beautiful campus. 10. Fiesta Gartenfest at the Beethoven Mannechor celebrates our German culture and history with a good cold beer in a stein, delicious brats, and festive, dancing music. The people are fantastic! A chance to wear my dirndl or lederhosen in the oldest beer garden in America always makes me happy. In a nutshell, Fiesta is ten glorious days of culture, colorful dressing, beautiful people, fantastic parades, food, and music. Fiesta is about community. San Antonio is about her people and their generous hearts. I encourage you and your family to start making Fiesta memories and Fiesta traditions.

“Green and Sustainable Building'' are the buzz words for housing today and if your clients have that in mind when searching for a home then, Imagine Homes, recognized as 100% Energy Star certified, is the builder for them! Owners, John Friesenhahn and Jim Bastoni, point out that green and sustainable building is not just about exceeding today's current codes in just a few areas of the home, but rather about providing a whole-house integrated system of efficiency for the home of today that far exceeds the current codes, and essentially establishes higher energy standards for the acceptable building code of the future. Imagine Homes consistently provides that whole-house integrated system and is the recipient of numerous awards that attest to their success in creating high performance in new home construction. Friesenhahn and Bastoni are so confident about the efficiency of their homes that they routinely place a chocolate bunny in the attics and invite everyone to see it un-melted even during the hottest summer months of the year. Imagine Homes has received the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Green Building Award six times to date and have also won NAHB’s “Best in Green” (BIG) award for Green Community of the Year in Mahncke Park and also the U.S. EPA Energy Star Certified Homes Market Leader Award for 2021. Friesenhahn and Bastoni know that everybody wins when they deliver a better-built home, where the owner will enjoy years of comfortable living with low maintenance, while reaping the benefits of low utility costs. Imagine Homes has worked with various local and national testing groups and certification programs to validate that the improvements they were forecasting in energy efficiency in their building practices would translate into real dollar savings for buyers. Currently, Imagine Homes is building in the following communities; Palacios in Cibolo

New Imagine Homes will be close to RAFB, The Forum Shopping, Loop 1604 & I-35. For more information about Cibolo Crossings, please email BKetchum@ImagineHomesSA.com. Another community that will open in 2022 is Playmoor in the Southtown district of San Antonio. Located off of Playmoor Street this community offers easy access to Downtown San Antonio. Urban living is highlighted in this great location and is close to major attractions, shopping, and dining. To be added to the informational list regarding Playmoor please email BKetchum@ImagineHomesSA.com. Boerne, Texas will be home to another project for 2022. Jones Place on School Street will offer Imagine Homes Completed Inventory Homes and check www.ImagineHomesSA.com for more information regarding this community. Knowing that customer satisfaction is the key to their business. Imagine Homes recognizes that REALTORS® are a valuable part of helping clients make the right home buying decision. They offer REALTORS® a Lunch & Learn training program about green building and both John Friesenhahn and Jim Bastoni have said that they appreciate the support they receive from these resulting "Green Team Agent REALTOR® Partners.” For more information about this program you can email EHillis@ImagineHomesSA.com. GUEST COLUMN Aly Crawford / Contributing Writer

Discovering San Antonio "What high-school did you go to?" Ever been asked that before? If you’re from San Antonio - chances are, you have. Most San Antonians, who grew up in the city, bond over the high schools they attended well after they’ve graduated. The same can be said for people who grew up in the surrounding smaller towns, and there’s a good chance that if you’re one of those people, you’ve claimed to be from San Antonio when you’ve ventured out of the state. San Antonio and it's surrounding municipalities, officially known as Greater San Antonio, is the third largest metropolitan area in Texas. My family and I call this sprawling metropolis home. But, I’ve learned that growing up in San Antonio can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. As the home to a population of nearly 1.6 million people, and over 14 municipalities within Bexar county, Greater San Antonio contains an astonishing

number and variety of people. When you include the areas in and around the city, like Converse, Leon Valley, and Alamo Heights, the total estimated population of Greater San Antonio grows to more than 2 million people. But, despite it's humongous size, San Antonio somehow manages to maintain a smalltown feel for many of its citizens. Driving through San Antonio you immediately notice the massive metropolis is broken up into informal districts and neighborhoods, each one with it's own distinctive personality. Architecture styles, different types of stores, and a wide range of restaurants somehow manage to make this huge city feel like a collection of small towns. In fact, if you're a San Antonio local like myself, I challenge you to take a trip down Broadway. You'll witness just a few of San Antonio's more recognizable districts. The eye opening drive starts near the intersection of Wetmore and 410 and

Follow Us @renewsline ends downtown near the Alamo. In approximately 30 minutes you quickly transition from neighborhood to neighborhood. These include Alamo Heights, one of San Antonio’s more bougie places to live, the Pearl district, a beautiful area designed by Pace picante’s legacy namesake, and urban buildings that saw their hayday in the early eighties. If you're up for it, you can continue straight as the road turns into Losoya Street and leads to South Alamo. Just as old as New Orleans, San Antonio was founded over three hundred years ago in 1718. By founding the one piece of Texas history no one ever seems to forget about, The Alamo, Spanish Catholic missionaries helped kickstart the growth of this area into a city. But the Alamo can’t be the only history this place has to offer. I've lived in San Antonio or one of it's more distant small towns, New Braunfels, my entire life but, I only know a fraction of this city’s complex history. Over the last few decades, I’ve acquired a few stories and pieced together some facts about the city, but I want to learn more about my hometown. How has such a unique set of circumstances led me to live in a city, with diehard Spurs fans, an award winning Stock Show and Rodeo, the McNay Art museum and the world's largest pair of cowboy boots?

Many contributing factors have led to what we now know as San Antonio. Geography, immigration, and the events of history are just a few of the factors I’ve learned that have shaped this city. When you study maps and early pictures of the area, you quickly discover more. At the intersection of highways I-10 and I-35, San Antonio is literally at a crossroads. I-10 stretches from coast to coast and I-35 runs all the way from Mexico to Canada. It’s convenient location and easy highway access encouraged San Antonio’s population to boom during the early 20th century. San Antonio’s landscape also played a large role in how this sprawling metropolis grew to cover such a wide footprint. At a unique intersection of ecoregions, San Antonio has many distinct environments. To the Northwest the Edward's Plateau extends towards San Antonio. It's elevation is the beginning of the watersheds for many of San Antonio’s waterways including the San Antonio River. To the West and South, scrub brush dots a flat landscape that often looks more desert than grassland. To the Southeast, coastal plains are slowly sloping up from the Gulf of Mexico. Join me each month as we dive deeper into San Antonio. We’ll learn some of the lesser known history and discover more about what different areas of this fascinating city have to offer.
