PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

September begins the start of a new Board year after the Club’s Annual Meeting and the election of new Board Members. I wanted to thank the almost 100 Members who attended the Meeting in person or via Zoom and thank the membership for the active engagement in the governance of the Club. I also wanted to congratulate and welcome new Board of Governors Jeff Gosnear and Phil Morse, who bring with them extensive experience in finance and business. And, I want to thank you for re-electing me to another term. Your new Board has had a busy three weeks, all before the first Board meeting on September 24. We elected Committee Chairs to head the redesigned Operational and Strategic Committees, chose Member volunteers for the eight committees, appointed the permanent 1925 Eagle Foundation Board of Trustees, and just completed a full-day Board retreat during which we focused on strategic visions and goals for the upcoming year.

I looked back recently on my first letter to you as your President at this time last year, where I shared my vision and values for the coming year which centered on 3 C’s: Communication, Culture and Community, and Compassion and Kindness. In re-reading this column, I believe (and hope you agree) that we have done a good job modeling these “virtues” this year and we will continue to build on them. The Board and Talon Tribe want to hear your voices on how you viewed your Member experience this season and hope you took the opportunity to complete the “end of the season” Annual Membership Survey as your feedback is crucial in decisions we will be making ahead.

The Board will be dealing with many initiatives started by last year’s Board that were listed in Vision 2030 and align with the Club’s Strategic Plan such as membership category adjustments and caps, COI restatement, Bylaws revision, ensuring a fiscally responsible operating budget and more. These initiatives will require difficult decisions to be made, however, I can promise you that the Board will continue to model what we learned from the Capital Dues Campaign. Many of these initiatives tie back to our operating

budget and the Member experience you wish to have at RBCC. From the Annual Membership Survey to committee meetings, Coffee with C, individual conversations and more, we will listen to your thoughts and concerns. We will communicate regularly and directly with membership, on multiple levels, in which we will share with you our reasons behind suggested changes as well as ask for your input about these initiatives.

As we approach our Centennial Year celebration, I was so excited to hear at the Board Retreat about the wonderful plans the Centennial Committee has been working on. It will start with some surprises at our New Year’s Eve party coming up and be highlighted with a Gala on August 2, 2025, so save the date and be ready to party!

On a final note, I would like you to consider volunteering for the University of Delaware Lady Blue Hen Invitational Tournament at RBCC October 19 and 20. Spotters and score keepers are needed—no golf experience necessary— and, having volunteered last year, it was terrific. New volunteers receive a beautiful blue logoed RBCC jacket and lunch for one half-day shift. Click here to sign up to volunteer.

Wishing you all a glorious fall!

GENERAL MANAGER’S UPDATE

rain days was quickly remediated and more maintenance is planned in the off-season to make the course ever better. We will also be able to admire all the native flowering plants on the course and around the property, since this was our first year planting them and the colorful look that we were used to will take a couple seasons to grow back in to be better and more sustainable.

C's Poem of the Month

"Listen!

the wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves, We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!"

- Humbert Wolfe

Still one of the most beautiful months of the year, in my opinion, October does bring a change with it at RBCC. It’s the month when some of our amenities “shrink”, as the dining patios stay warm with the heaters but eventually get smaller in size until the temperature brings us all inside, the tennis courts get close to winterizing, and the pool gets its green cover for the cold season.

Simultaneously, we see more weddings and events booked at the Clubhouse, more of our Members participating in fitness classes, golf clinics and programs, and yes… more available tee times for the golf course. With only a couple of golf events left for the season (Member-Pro, Meals on Wheels and the UD Tournament), our Members will get to enjoy playing our ever challenged yet beautiful course. Alan’s team made sure that the damage we’ve had this season after the heavy

As the Talon Tribe is slowly getting back to the year-round staffing numbers, we’ll be looking into the survey results we’ve received (520 as of this week), and focus on the remainder of this fiscal year. We will be looking to make changes to address the budget variances todate, and start the assumptions for our next year, our Centennial. The assumptions and plans will be presented to the newly appointed committees.

Our priority will remain following our Strategic Plan and Vision 2030 and making sure that everything we propose aligns with your expectations as a Member of the premier club in Delmarva.

As you will read throughout this month’s newsletter, the Club has put a busy calendar together to keep you and your families engaged, as this is the most significant way you can support your favorite club, your favorite staff, and now your favorite foundation. This will be the 1925 Eagle Foundation’s first year, and we’ve seen much support already, with more to come. I’m sure now that we’ll have more Members engaging in its new committees and an expanded Board of Trustees. We’re hoping for a huge participation in the Foundation’s 5k Run/Walk in November, and hope that it will mark the beginning of a new Club tradition.

Meanwhile, enjoy the best this coastal town has to offer in the fall, stay curious and engaged in everything RBCC, and come this Saturday to Coffee with C to hear the latest, ask questions, meet new friends, enjoy a

breakfast sandwich and yes… a proper hot coffee.

Thank you for another great season!

TALON TRIBE UPDATE

The Talon Tribe held its quarterly All-Employee Luncheon in September. We celebrated oneyear service anniversaries, learned ways to cope with stress such as making origami frogs, and celebrated our Talon Tribe Member of the Quarter: Brandon Legates.

Brandon was nominated for his ongoing display of the Talon Tribe Core Values, including Respect, Integrity and Tribework.

Some things Brandon’s coworkers said about him were:

“He's always got great attitude, and he goes out of his way to help other out!”

“I would like to nominate Brandon who has showed Tribework. He has a positive attitude, always smiling, always ready help anyone at the Club.”

“Brandon is always so warm and welcoming. If he sees you passing or around campus, he always says hello. When I was hastily trying to get things ready for a last-minute meeting, he immediately jumped to ask if I needed assistance. I told him I was okay, but he didn’t stop there and insisted on helping. Brandon then helped me with a few things prior to the meeting. It meant a lot to me that he just jumped in to help and didn’t take no for an answer. Brandon always displays respect and, in this instance, showed Tribework.”

Now that we are moving into the fall and winter season the team is working on what we call our “off-season” projects, For me, some of those projects include preparation for the Member’s Handbook, family registry updates, reviewing and editing the communications calendar, centennial planning and more! Here’s what to expect in the coming months.

Handbook:

It is the goal of the Club to have the handbook out in January of 2025, but in order to do so, we need your help! A link to fill out your information for the 2025 Member’s Handbook will be sent on Saturday, October 12. This form is also available for pick up in the Clubhouse from Mary Veenema, Member Services Specialist. Handbook listings will be due no later than December 1. On Wednesday, September 25 the committee applications for the 1925 Eagle Foundation were sent to the membership via email. The Board of Trustees are calling all RBCC Members to consider applying for one of the Foundation’s committees. This application is available on the Club website under Member Central and will be available until Wednesday, October 23. Apply by clicking here!

Centennial Planning:

The Centennial Committee is working hard on making 2025 a year to remember including events, merchandise, a centennial book and more. Now, we are looking to plan the communications and content calendar for the year. And who best to help than the RBCC Members themselves. If you have a story, RBCC memory, pictures or any paraphernalia to share, I would LOVE to hear and see what you have to build it into the Club’s centennial year! Trivia Night:

ALL THINGS FOOD & BEVERAGE

“Italian Night” will be on Friday, October 4 and Chef Carolyn will offer specials that evening along with the a la carte menu. “Crab Cake Night” will be on Thursday the 10th and feature discounted crab cake platters as well as other crabmeat dishes special for that evening. The very popular “Prime Rib Night” will be on Saturday, October 26 and as always will also include other features as well as the full menu.

The Wednesday Night Trivia seasons schedule ended last month. Eighteen contests were hotly contested. The participation was great throughout the entire event. Chef Carolyn’s buffet menus with themes spanning the globe were exceptional, and Members and guests looked forward to what was in store each week. Our MC Bill did a great job moving us from category to category.

When it all shook out, “Rain Man” came away with the overall championship and their name will be engraved on the trophy in the Club’s lobby case. We should recognize all the teams that competed every night of the season: Smarty Pants, Much About Nothing, Brainy Bunch, Prime Timers, Smartini’s, Tasmanian Devils, Serendipity and Arcane Knowledge. Congratulations to all the teams on a great year. Enjoy all of the pictures!

Upcoming Events:

From a food and beverage standpoint in October, there is much in store. Cosi will host “Grapes to Glass” on Saturday, the 5th. He will compare and taste with attendees’ local wine grapes harvested with the varietals created from them. Just like the “Wine Club” education sessions Cosi hosts, this event will be fun and informational.

Unrelated to F&B, one of my favorite weekends of the year is the University of Delaware Invitational hosted at RBCC every year. This year’s tournament will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 18th – 20th This event, just like all of our outings, are an example of the Club’s commitment to giving back to the game and supporting amateur golf or creating scholarships for deserving young students. It is great to see the member volunteers on course and those that host the college women teams in their homes.

See you around the Club!

GOLF DEPARTMENT UPDATE

The weather is changing, the course is healing from aerification, and we are approaching some of the best weather and golf of the year here at the beach. We are transitioning out of tournament season and into merchandise and planning season for the staff. This is the time of year Alli and Nick are busy in vendor meetings, planning for the Spring and Summer of 2025, but also getting out all our Fall/Winter apparel. This year is even more special as we will be introducing the Club’s centennial logo.

Additionally, the rest of the staff is busy within the operations; whether it be Ricky with his highly successful Rehoboth 36 groups, Chris with his packed teaching schedule and George and I planning for the winter and 2025 season. We plan to deliver a special centennial for the entire Club. As we transition to the Holiday season, I wanted to give Alli some of the article to talk about the merchandise operation this upcoming fall season in the Shop.

MERCHANDISE UPDATE

The season is quickly changing! The Golf Shop is slowly getting a makeover with fall and winter gear that is creeping in as the chillier days arrive, so be sure to check back frequently to see the new merchandise! Whether a closet update is needed, or the eager Holiday shopping has begun, we have the latest polos, layers and unique gifts for the friends and family on your list! Don't miss out on the chance to find the perfect present as the season unfolds, as we will have upcoming sales detailed in the weekly Eagle Tracks and monthly Newsletters!

Starting on October 1, we have hauntingly great prices on shoes and bags! Trick-or-treat yourself to $100 off any in-stock GFORE golf shoes and $75 off any in-stock golf bag! These spooky sales will vanish after October 31, so hurry in!

GREENS DEPARTMENT UPDATE

Another month and another mention of the weather! I recently looked at the weather records since the beginning of June. It was a surprise to learn that the actual rainfall for 2024 is 15.9” vs a normal rainfall of 13.3” for the same period. Although it says we have had above normal rainfall, the breakdown shows a completely different story. Most of it was from the 11.5” that fell during the two storms in mid-July, which means there was much less rain than normal in June, August and September. Even with the extremely dry two months since those storms, the course has recovered nicely and we had a bonus with the temperature breaking earlier than normal, providing some fantastic weather for playing and for the turf.

We aerated on schedule right after Labor Day and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Based on what I learned over the last year, we tweaked some of the practices for recovery which made the greens heal very quickly, being back to normal within two weeks. I finally have a good base to work from and have the time this fall to add some more detailed practices to the greens maintenance which should improve them even more.

We also groomed the fairways while we were closed. I went aggressive on the first mow which ripped out a lot of the coarse common Bermudagrass. I wasn’t expecting it to come out as easy so there are bare patches where it was. I am hoping that it hurt the common Bermuda enough going into the winter that it will give the other finer bermudagrasses a chance to take over or at least if the common Bermudagrass comes back, due to the new maintenance practices, it will adapt and become a more favorable playing surface.

As I mentioned last month those July storms coupled with the heat caused several areas of damage around the course. Some of them slowly came back themselves, while others needed some renovation, some seed, and some of the others in out of play areas are still visible. Over the last year, I observed that the Ironcutter Bermudagrass on 19 would recover after it got damaged from salt spray. This spring we tried it on some areas that flooded over the winter. It has worked exceptionally well so the Board approved to resod the damaged areas on 18 fairway with it, which we completed after aeration. This will be a great test to see how a large area of it will perform in the long term and if it is the best option for the future. We used the old sod to build a small berm around the pond on 10; the extra volume will lower the risk of it overflowing and therefore damaging the turf in the future.

As always email me superintendent@rehobothbeachcc.com with any questions.

RACQUET’S DEPARTMENT UPDATE

This article finds me in that sad but grateful space as another incredibly successful racquets season nears an end and what a season it was!! First and foremost, thank you. Thank you for your kindness and friendship, thank you for your constant support of our programs and events and thank you for always welcoming me into the RBCC family. I am humbled and grateful for everyone at RBCC and look forward to returning next year for more of the same.

We wrapped up our calendar of events with some competitive and fun events in late August and early September. Leading off with the always competitive and well attended, Men’s and Women’s Member Pickleball Club Championships. We had a few familiar faces in the finals again this year. Jim Derrick and Blair Cherico won for the Men’s Division with Jamey Mault and Kevin Moss as a close second. The Ladies team of Jullie Burton and Kerry Lockwood captured the Champions title with Kathleen Schell and Julie Moore as a very competitive finalist team.

We once again held the VERY popular and incredibly fun Triples Tournament. This year our teams went above and beyond with the spirit of the event! So many fun and creative outfits coupled with some fierce competition makes this event a fan favorite! Our winners of the tournament were team “White Trash” comprised of Ray and Isabelle Kayal and Jef Klein. Coming in a close second was team “Dewey Devils” with Robert and Nancy Sher and Nan Bender. Our most spirited award went to “The Baltimorons” (Jerry Gutierrez & guests) who always hold the highest spirit despite “bringing up the rear” for tennis play Congratulations to all of our Champions throughout the entire summer season!

We enjoyed tremendous level of social play, round robins, team tennis and happy hour events this season. The community that has grown the past 9 years, has made me the most proud of the RBCC racquets program.

I am thrilled to say we will be hosting the annual Florida events once again this year. The first of these two events will be on Thursday, February 13 on the East Coast of Florida. Bruce and Leslie Lane are sponsoring the RBCC racquets community for a 2 hour tennis and padel mixer at Palm Beach Country Club. This will run from 12pm – 2pm. That same evening, we will be attending the “Tacos and Tequilla” affair at Delray Tennis Center from 6pm –8pm, followed by professional tennis at the Delray venue! Please contact me if you are interested in either of these events. Please act quickly as the Delray event will sell out!

The West Coast event will once again be hosted by Terry & Bev Billingsley at Grey Oaks Country Club. For those of you that have joined us in past years, this is a special club and we are grateful to Terry and Bev for their kindness in extending the invitation again this year. Tennis play will be Saturday February 22 from 2pm – 4pm, followed by dining at the club. Please contact me to reserve your spot for this wonderful affair!

I would also like to recognize and thank all the RBCC Tribe Members who tirelessly worked to allow the racquet’s programs and events to be so successful. The maintenance lead, Hugh Wissinger, who is in at sunrise to ensure all the courts, parking and viewing areas are pristine and ready for early play. The grounds team, who keep the plants and surrounding area so beautiful. The food and beverage team with the incredible cocktail, appetizer and dining experience they bring to each event. The talented professional teaching team, Bill Wissinger, Caleb Anthoney and the Junior Pro’s Arnav Seghal, Kate Agnew and Emma Agnew. The Racquets Shop Coordinator, friendly greeter and often parking attendant, Angie Falise. Finally, all the members of the Clubhouse and administration team who support our efforts daily. You are all so much appreciated! Please have a safe, healthy and joyous fall and winter!
