PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Happy New Year and welcome to the Club’s 100th Anniversary of the founding of Rehoboth Beach Country Club. As some of you may know, RBCC was incorporated in early 1925 within the town limits Rehoboth Beach near Silver Lake and what is now known as Country Club Estates. On 65 acres of a former farm, a nine-hole golf course was built along with a clubhouse which was renovated from the old farmhouse. This area is now where Rehoboth Elementary, a playground, Turtle Bridge, and many homes exist. In 1966, RBCC moved where we are today on a 150-acre site, with 1,000 feet of waterfront, and a new 18hole golf course and clubhouse.

We, Members and Talon Tribe, are blessed with the heritage provided by the vision and dedication of others before us, and will be using our Centennial year as an opportunity to recognize and remember this legacy. The Board, Centennial Committee and Tribe are very excited for the many activities planned in the coming year, highlighted by a Gala Ball on August 2, 2025 (this is your “Save the Date” reminder!). You will be hearing much more about coming events and we hope you will take every opportunity to participate and celebrate together.

I was looking over my January message last year where I talked about my “intentions” for the coming year as your President, and believe we have made good progress in achieving those objectives. And, we will continue in the coming year along this path:

To continue to build an atmosphere of hospitality, warmth, kindness, and cooperation in our RBCC community. This intention has been a priority for me and the Board. A strong, enduring Club creates a tradition and culture of politeness, courtesy, decorum, civility and respect in the way all are treated. The Board and Governance Committee will be working on establishing policies, standards, and expectations on Member behavior with clear guidelines on how infractions will be handled.

To address issues in Club governance which will be legally sound, prudent, and efficient. As discussed in last year’s message, I noted that our Bylaws had grown over to 45 pages, while most top Clubs are 12-15, and our Certificate of Incorporation (COI) is outdated and not consistent with our current IRS requirements for not-for-profit clubs. The Ad Hoc Committee appointed last year of Club leaders and attorneys has been working diligently on this big undertaking and will soon be ready to present our recommendations to the membership. Changing the COI will require a majority vote of Stockholder Members and, having not been successful in three attempts in the past, the Board is determined to do a better job of explaining why this needs to be done, without affecting any major change in stockholder rights, and achieving consensus for passage.

Sharon Covington Board President

continue to provide an exceptional membership experience, while being aware that expenses persist to rise and our dues remain on the lower end of industry standards. The Board knows that we need to do a better job of explaining to membership any increase in operational dues and how this money is being spent.

To prepare for the future of RBCC, with a strategic and long-range plan addressing both the needs, wants, and wishes of the community. The Board, Tribe and Committees continue to work on our strategic plan and Vision 2030, assessing progress and changes along the way. In addition, with the passage of this past year’s Capital Dues, the Strategic Planning Committee is reviewing all Capital Expense projects for the next fiscal year and will be reporting quarterly to the membership, as promised, how Capital Dues are being spent.

To provide a fiscally sound approach to meet these needs, wants, and wishes Meeting our RBCC fiduciary responsibilities continues to be a priority for the Board. This fall, we saw that our projected budget deficient had grown substantially and that immediate steps needed to be taken to bring our operations back in line. The Board, Management and Finance Committee worked tirelessly to analyze, strategize, and institute often difficult and sometimes painful changes necessary to steady the course. We are all dedicated to

As I consider the legacy given to us from our forebearers in the first 100 years at RBCC, and the stewardship we carry and look to continue to in the future, I’m reminded of a quote from Henry Ford:

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.

I look forward to sharing in this Centennial year by recognizing and celebrating RBCC’s success with you!

NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK!

THE STORY BEHIND THE LOGO Centennial

In the heart of 1925, a vision began to take shape in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. A vision fueled by a love for the game of golf, a passion for bringing people together, and a dream that would stretch through time.

It was the middle of the “Roaring Twenties” and a decade of national celebration with a wave of prosperity. In the 20’s, women won the vote, “flappers” wore short skirts and makeup, and people danced the nights away to jazz music. Though Prohibition was in effect, alcohol was available at speakeasies and private clubs. In 1925, Calvin Coolidge was president, The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and the Grand Ole Opry began. Writer F. Scott Fitzgerald penned The Great Gatsby, which would help define popular culture. It was a time of progress, creativity and leisure. And, in the midst of it all, a country club was born.

Throughout the 1800s, a railroad connected upstate Delaware and Pennsylvania to Rehoboth with train tracks running down the middle of Rehoboth Avenue, bringing the first influx of tourists to the area. The Henlopen Hotel on the boardwalk was constructed and the city was incorporated leading to Rehoboth Beach becoming a summer resort. But the biggest change was yet to come. In 1925, a paved road was completed between Georgetown and Rehoboth linking the town to other roads leading from Washington, DC. Soon, diplomats and government officials discovered the area as a vacation spot, and Rehoboth became known as “The Nation’s Summer Capital.” It wasn’t just the wealthiest folks who traveled those new roads. Henry Ford’s Model T’s were being mass produced at

the affordable price of $290, and car ownership soared. Many of these recreational drivers were heading to Rehoboth, where their families enjoyed the beautiful beach and boardwalk.

That same year, the original golf course of Rehoboth Beach, located in what was then Rehoboth Heights, was designed by Francis Warner, former President of the Golf Association of Philadelphia. Although it would be three more years before the clubhouse was completed, the 65-acre property containing the golf course was the beginning of Rehoboth Beach Country Club.

As the first decade ended, the exuberance and optimism of 1925 had given way to the next, more challenging time in the life of the Club, the city and the nation. As the Great Depression continued, savings were being wiped out, farms decimated, and businesses were closing. Bankruptcies and despair were rampant, as were unemployment and hunger. The carefree joy of the Twenties was a distant memory. It would take another seven years for the country to pull out of these hard times, and the following years had troubles of their own, as the US entered World War II. So, what was going on at Rehoboth Beach Country Club during this time? Membership in those days was $30 for a family, with no initiation fees and stock purchase optional. Golf, dinners and other social events continued to boost the spirits of Members and guests.

With the arrival of the Second World War in 1941, life again changed for the Club, the city and the nation. Food and gas were strictly rationed, and people would receive coupons to exchange for those precious items. Those

ars that had brought “automobility” to so many, were now driven much less.

This made getting to the country club a real problem for the Members, which in turn, presented a bigger issue. Would the Club meet its $33,000 budget for the year to continue being a place for connection and friendly competition?

But then, an ingenious solution was found. The club hired farmers’ horses and Conestoga wagons, to transport the Members to and from the course. This decision resulted in the Club meeting its budget and a push towards 100 years.

And now, in 2025, we stand at the threshold of a hundred years. A century of tradition, of growth, of challenges faced and triumphs celebrated. From the elegance of the twenties to the dynamic offerings of today. Over the years, at the heart of the club was a simple idea: a place for connection.

Connection; whether it’s over dinner and dancing, where the highway meets the train tracks, or on the back of a Conestoga wagon

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Happy New Year, dear RBCC Members!

New year, with new hopes and dreams, new goals and aspirations, new challenges and new ways to tackle them, new memories with new friends, and lastly an entire new chapter in our Club’s long history: a long-awaited centennial year. For the past few years, we’ve been counting down to this moment and the chain of events that follow throughout the year to commemorate such an important milestone.

Being part of RBCC since 2007 (on and off, I admit) allowed me to see how much this Club has changed over the years, although the essence remains the same - the palpable friendly atmosphere that resides on these blessed grounds and the irresistible attraction that comes with it, one that is always pointed out by the prospective members touring the amenities or the talented professionals joining the Talon Tribe.

As important as the countdown to this moment was, 2025 is the year to “count up” new accomplishments we strategized about and dreamt of, set new milestones and continue to be stewards of this place for another century to come.

I am excitedly waiting to turn new pages together as we enjoy a new season at RBCC.

Let’s continue to make new unforgettable memories!
