Redwood Christian Schools Annual Report

2021-2022

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of RCS

The 2021-22 theme, “God’s Calling,” was based on Ephesians 4:1-3, “I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the CALLING to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” The entire school year testified to God’s faithfulness to Redwood Christian Schools: we were able to fulfill our calling, and we were kept safe. In addition, the Christian testimony of the RCS faculty, staff, and administration was a guiding light for our students.

I am thankful for the faculty, staff, and administration that God called to serve at RCS. We provided a Christ-centered education to the students called into our classrooms through their efforts. Throughout 52 years of ministry, the success of RCS has always been due to our faculty, staff, and administration. God called a talented team of people to RCS, and they used their gifts, talents, and abilities to model Christ and teach academics. From the beginning to the end, day in and day out, their hard work and dedication to their students were a bright shining light.

The year began with great expectation! On August 16, 2021, 654 students returned to campus, ready to learn from their teachers while following the required COVID-19 mitigation factors with 100% live instruction! As the year progressed, the COVID-19 guidance changed, gradually permitting a return to normal school activities. By April 2022, we were back to normal.

The end-of-year MAP Growth Assessment showed that RCS students performed academically much better than other students across the nation: 76% of RCS students scored at or above grade level in both math and reading! Such high scores are a testimony to the dedication of the RCS faculty, staff, and students, as well as to the commitment of RCS parents to ensure that their children receive a Christ-centered education which is able to equip students for daily living and eternal life.

The year ended with great recognition with Kindergarten, Fifth, Eighth, and Senior graduations (without any attendance restrictions!). On May 26, 2022, RCS celebrated 57 seniors at the Class of 2022 graduation ceremony. This graduation is one of my favorite memories for three reasons. First, I am incredibly proud of the Class of 2022 and how they persevered throughout COVID-19. No matter what happened, they decided to make the best of the situation. Second, the RCS Board of Directors bestowed a Doctorate of Divinity upon Stan Edington. When I became the MSHS Principal in 2008, I began calling Mr. Edington “The Senior Statesman” because he taught during the tenure of every RCS high school principal. Every single RCS graduating Senior, from the first graduating Class of 1977 until the Class of 2022, has taken a class from Mr. Edington. Third, Dr. Benjamin Warner led the graduation recessional, leading his students into God’s new calling on their lives, marking the end of his 20-year career at RCS. Dr. Warner answered “God’s Calling” to become the Head of School at American Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

In Christ, Al Hearne II,

Due to continued County restrictions, the Booster Club again decided to offer the annual Crab Feed as a drive-through event. Tickets were sold online. On the day of the event, volunteers met on-campus in the multipurpose room to assemble and package the dinners as runners delivered them to the customers’ vehicles in the school parking lot. This event raised $5,500. The only other fundraising effort able to continue last year was apparel sales which raised $3,400, bringing the Booster Club’s total 2021-22 fundraising to $8,900.

Jog-a-thon & Eagle Dash

The school’s largest annual fundraising events, the Jog-a-thon (elementary and middle school students participating) and the Eagle Dash (high school students participating), raised over $173,000 in 2021. This amount, possibly the most money ever raised through these events, surpassed our goal of $150,000. Leading the events were Director of Advancement Mr. Mike Kady (elementary school Jog-a-thon), faculty members Mrs. Stacie Clausen (Eagle Dash) and Mr. Steve Gillette (middle school Jog-a-thon).

With a drop in COVID 19-related cases during the spring of 2021, the elementary and the middle and high school campuses returned to a near-normal schedule, holding Jog Assemblies and awarding group prizes that could not be done in 2020. Students were excited to be able to resume these activities and they did a phenomenal job of making this year’s Jog-a-thon and Eagle Dash a tremendous success!

The funds raised from the Jog-a-thon and the Eagle Dash are designated for improvements and new vehicle purchases for our transportation department.

“God’s Calling” Virtual Event

In place of the Annual Dinner, a virtual school-wide fundraising event took place on Giving Tuesday, November 30, due to ongoing concerns related to the COVID-19 virus. This year’s theme was “God’s Calling: A Day in the Life of RCS.” The format took on the form of a newscast moderated by Dr. Al Hearne with lead reporter Mrs. Teresa Hendren traveling between the two Redwood Christian School campuses. The areas of school life and academics received coverage through various interviews of students, faculty, and staff included reading, writing, history, science, physics, music, and athletics.

The event’s goal was to raise $70,000 to provide new computers for the elementary school library and the middle school and high school computer lab. The RCS community responded with overwhelming generosity, giving over $77,400 to surpass our goal.

Stewardship Giving

Redwood Christian Schools (RCS) desires to provide a Christian education for as many students as possible. To achieve this goal, RCS places a high priority on affordability when setting tuition rates every year.

In reality, tuition provides approximately 80% of the total cost of educating a child at RCS -- a gap which, of course must be closed. We receive funds through federal or state employee giving campaigns, grants, and we pursue donations through events such as the Annual Dinner, the Jog-a-thon/Eagle Dash, or the Booster Club Crab Feed.

Words cannot express our gratitude for the individuals, families, businesses, and corporations listed on the following pages whose sacrificial giving and support allow Redwood Christian Schools to provide a high-quality, Christ-centered education for so many. May God bless them with the promises found in Proverbs 11:25: “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Serving Christ through education, Mike Kady Director of Advancement

The Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is a yearly campaign designed to support critical programs and enhance the educational experience for all students at Redwood Christian Schools. The campaign raises vital funds to support the general operating budget, including tuition assistance, campus enhancements, facility maintenance, technology, new curriculum, teacher classroom needs, athletics, fine arts, and more. The Annual Fund is the primary giving initiative that bridges the gap between tuition and the actual cost of providing an education for each student. Those who contribute to the Annual Fund include current parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, administrators, grandparents, churches, businesses, and other friends of RCS.
