2020-2021 Redwood Christian Schools Annual Report

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of RCS The 2020-21 school year was the most challenging year of teaching in the history of the profession.

Despite the many challenges presented by the global pandemic, the men and women serving at RCS more than rose to the occasion and hit a grand slam. They took excellent care of the children God called into their classrooms, and pioneered a new method of teaching to keep students as safe as possible from COVID-19.

The year began with great uncertainty, due to changing COVID-19 guidance from the State of California. In July 2020, it looked as though RCS would be returning to campus for live, in-person instruction, but COVID-19 cases began to increase. Although RCS planned for everyone to return to campus on the first day of school, this was not allowed by the State of California due to the high level of transmission of COVID-19 in Alameda County. RCS pivoted and began the year with K-12 students receiving instruction at home from their teachers via Zoom.

In October 2020, RCS received a waiver from the State and Redwood Christian Elementary became one of the first schools in Alameda County allowed to return to on-campus, live instruction. The RCE faculty embraced a new challenge: the small, stable cohort. Elementary students and teachers returned to campus in cohorts of about 14 students. Our teachers taught live to one cohort, Zoomed instruction to another cohort on campus, and also Zoomed instruction to the students whose parents chose to keep them at home. The fabulous RCE support staff stepped in and supervised the cohort without live instruction. Everyone at the RCE campus and District Office helped to keep the cohorts thriving in one way or another.

In early November, before the holiday surge began, RCS received permission from the State to allow middle school and high school students to return to their campus in small cohorts as well. Students were not able to rotate classrooms; they stayed in their cohort classroom all day while the teachers rotated through the cohorts. But then, due to the surging number of cases early in December, the State said additional students would not be able to return to campus. The students who had already returned to campus were allowed to continue.

Finally, in February 2021, the State allowed additional MSHS students to return. Based upon parental and faculty preference, high school students were on campus two days a week for live instruction and at home for three days a week for Zoom instruction.

By May the winter COVID-19 surge had receded. RCS decided to host live, in-person graduations based upon guidance from Alameda County. We celebrated Kindergarten, 5th Grade, 8th Grade, and High School Graduations indoors, with everyone in attendance wearing a cloth face covering. Our graduations were the first time that many of us had seen our colleagues and students in 14 months.

Reflecting upon this unprecedented and unpredictable year, I continually thank God for the men and women He has called to serve at RCS. For 51 years, RCS has provided a Christ-centered education for the students whom God has called into our classrooms. Although the success of RCS has always been due to our teachers, it has never been more evident than the 2020-21 school year. From the beginning to the end, day in and day out, their hard work and dedication to their students was a bright shining light.

Although almost everything in life was challenging in one way or another, our teachers and support staff rose to the occasion time and time again, in service to our students and their families. They did everything required to teach their students, while keeping them as safe as possible from COVID-19. Although a handful of elementary cohorts had to be quarantined due to close contact, RCS finished the year with no community spread of COVID-19 at the elementary campus. In addition, not a single MSHS cohort had to be quarantined. It is a joy and privilege to be able to serve with each one of our faculty and staff as they daily model Christ to our students. I am confident that no one else in the world works as diligently for their students as do those who serve at RCS.

Jog-a-thon & Eagle Dash The Jog-a-thon/Eagle Dash is the only annual school-wide fundraiser held by Redwood Christian Schools (RCS) that supplements the general operating budget. However, like so many other aspects of school life, it was impacted by restrictions associated with the COVID-19 virus. RCS canceled the Eagle Dash for 2021 since most high schoolers remained at home receiving online instruction during this time of year. Jog assemblies delivered to the classrooms and individual homes via Zoom took the place of regular assemblies where all students would typically be present. Certain prize levels required changes since those involving large gatherings were not permitted. On Jog Day, students jogged in their cohorts on multiple tracks on campus while students at home joined in through classroom Zoom meetings.

Despite these challenges, Jog-a-thon raised $145,180, one of its best years on record. The monies raised through the 2021 Jog-a-thon funded additional technology infrastructure for online and in-class instruction to remain effective during COVID-19.

Booster Club Due to the continued shelter-in-place in early 2021, the Booster Club decided to offer the annual Crab Feed as a drive-through event instead of the traditional in-person dinner at an off-campus venue. It was also decided to cancel the traditional silent and live auctions. Tickets were sold online. On the day of the event, volunteers met on-campus in the multi-purpose room to assemble and package the dinners as runners delivered them to customer vehicles in the school parking lot. Given these various limitations, the turnout was favorable and the event deemed a success. This event raised $27,925. The only other fundraising effort able to continue last year was apparel sales which raised $6,798, bringing the Booster Club’s total 2021 fundraising to $34,633.

The Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is a yearly campaign designed to support critical programs and enhance the educational experience for all students at Redwood Christian Schools. The campaign raises vital funds to support the general operating budget, including tuition assistance, campus enhancements, facility maintenance, technology, new curriculum, teacher classroom needs, athletics, fine arts, and more. The Annual Fund is the primary giving initiative that bridges the gap between tuition and the actual cost of providing an education for each student. Those who contribute to the Annual Fund include current parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, administrators, grandparents, churches, businesses, and other friends of RCS.

“All In” Virtual Event Traditionally, the Annual Dinner has served as the kickoff for the Redwood Christian Schools Annual Fund where supporters come together to enjoy fellowship and a fine meal, and to receive updates about the school’s ministry while enjoying the talents of our students. However, COVID-19 necessitated quick pivoting and significant changes. We presented instead the “All In” Virtual Event on Giving Tuesday using the Facebook platform. Parents and students shared why they were “all in” for RCS. Dr. Hearne also encouraged everyone to support RCS and be “all in” by supporting RCS with prayer and a financial gift or pledge. We praise God as $77,765 was raised through donations and pledges due to the event, exceeding our $70,000 goal!

Incorporated under the laws of the State of California in 1970 as a nonprofit, tax-exempt, interdenominational, independent school with grades TK-12, we are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, composed of members of several churches in the East Bay.
