Annual Report

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of RCS Our 2018-19 Annual Report highlights RCS student accomplishments and events in the life of the school that we want to celebrate and have memorialized as a part of the published history of the school. It is a comprehensive overview of our academic achievement, student life, finances, and much more. I believe that 2018-19 was one of the best years in the life of RCS for so many reasons. The energy and excitement of our campuses was evident throughout the year by smiling faces and eager anticipation of the next event that was going to happen. We: • Celebrated, as a community, the grand opening of the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium. • Enjoyed newly remodeled 5th grade classrooms. • Saw a tremendous increase in our TerraNova 3 standardized math scores, due to the Saxon math implementation in 2017-18. • Started the year with a waitlist for Kindergarten. • Had 131 total AP exams taken on campus by high school students and 64 of these received a score of 3 or higher. Five seniors were recognized by the College Board as AP Scholars (Danny, JD, Evan, Aidann, and Andrew each scored a 3 or higher on on three AP exams), Jonathan was recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors (scoring at least a 3 on four AP exams and averaging at least a 3.25 for all exams taken) and Isaac was recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction (scoring at least a 3 on five or more exams and averaging at least a 3.5 on all exams). • Had 5th grader Azure, 8th grader Malachi, and Senior Isaac recognized as Student Citizens of the Year by the Castro Valley / Eden Area Chamber of Commerce. • Graduated 78 Seniors and launched them into the real world of college and career. • Celebrated the retirements of kindergarten teacher Miss Masin who taught RCS students for 39 years and Charlie Beck who served on the RCS Board for 30 years. God continued to shine his favor on RCS and supporters of Vision 2020, a three-year campaign which began in October 2017 to raise $1.25 million for the completion of the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium, remodel the RCE classrooms, and create a new science lab at the MSHS. At the conclusion of the 2018-19 school year, RCS supporters have donated in cash and pledges a total of $1,306,204. The additional funds donated will continue to be used to renovate RCS classrooms and enhance campus security. I would like to thank each and every supporter of Vision 2020 for their part in helping to make RCS the best TK-12 Christian school in the East Bay. Your generosity is inspiring and your investments will produce eternal dividends in the lives of RCS students. RCS has enjoyed 49 years of providing a Christ-centered education to the students that God has called into our classrooms. This longevity and success is due to the men and women who have dedicated their lives as stewards to RCS. It is a joy and privilege to be able to serve with each one of them as they model Christ to our students daily. I am confident that there is not another faculty in the world who works as diligently for their students as does those who serve at RCS. I would like to personally thank each and every donor who contributed to the ministry of RCS. In Christ,

Annual Dinner The Annual Dinner brings together supporters of Redwood Christian Schools (RCS) to provide an update of the annual progress and future direction of the ministry, to celebrate past and current achievements, to honor those who have made a significant impact to advance the mission of RCS, and to seek financial and prayer support for ongoing needs. Approximately 275 supporters gathered together on October 22, 2018 for an evening of food and fellowship at Canyon View in San Ramon. High school student Rohan John, the middle school’s Pure Joy Choir, and the high school’s Concert Choir provided the entertainment for the event. RCS high school student volunteers (pictured below) graciously served our guests during the dinner. Superintendent Al Hearne was the emcee for the program. He presented Sheriff Gregory Ahern (pictured left) the Lifetime Recognition Award for his many years of faithfully supporting the students of Alameda County as well as his commitment to the Student Citizen of the Year program. Dr. Hearne also provided an update of Vision 2020, followed by a challenge to raise the remaining funds for the campaign within the next year. Other highlights included alumni and faculty interviews to showcase the impact Redwood Christians Schools has made in the lives of our past and present students. RCS is grateful for all who attended and for each of our Annual Dinner Sponsors who helped defray the cost of our special evening together.

Booster Club The RCS Booster Club is a parent volunteer organization whose goal is to support the RCS athletic programs through fundraising and volunteer support at RCS athletic events. The 2018-19 year was a success for the Booster Club. Leadership was provided by club officers President Joe Geronimo, Vice President Eric King, Secretary Stephanie Barquero, and Treasurer Debbie Klosky. Some of the events that RCS Booster Club volunteers participated in included: Back-to-School BBQ, Parent-Coach Night (sponsored the complimentary desserts), on-campus apparel sales for students of RCE and RCMS, the Redwood Christian Basketball Invitational, the Redwood Christian Homecoming Games, the Booster Club Crab/Tri-Tip Feed and Auction, and support at various RCS athletic events throughout the year. Two of the major sources of income for the RCS Booster club are apparel/spirit wear sales and the annual Booster Club Crab Feed and Auction held the first week of February. Laura Coon, who organizes the apparel portion of Booster Club fundraising, did an outstanding job providing a wide selection of spirit wear that RCS families could purchase. Spirit wear sales totaled $15,966 during the 201819 school year. The Crab Feed event was one of the most successful fundraisers ever for the Booster Club totaling $26,730. The new Scorevision multi media display sponsorship program also raised $7,300. The RCS Booster Club meets on a monthly basis throughout the school year to plan for events and discuss how to best support the athletic programs of RCS. During 2018-19, the Booster Clubs fundraising efforts this year were directed toward Vision 2020 with a specific donation towards the gym project of $33,000. The Booster Club has committed to raise funds for future projects that will help furnish the new gym and other athletic department wish list items.

Jog-a-thon and Eagle Dash

Jog-a-thon (K-8th grade) and Eagle Dash (9th-12th grade) are annual fundraising events that Redwood Christian Schools uses to enhance the overall experience for our students. These same students are directly involved as they seek out, with parental assistance, sponsors who will support them in their efforts to raise funds for our school. Students invited potential sponsors that included relatives, family friends, professional acquaintances, and others who might know the student well. RCS once again partnered with PledgeStar, an online service that has brought Jog-a-thon and Eagle Dash into the digital age. Although traditional mailed paper jog forms were still available for use, sending out invitations through PledgeStar has become the favorite choice for most of our Jog-a-thon and Eagle Dash participants. The results were outstanding this year as $142,234 was raised in cash and pledges. Funds received from the 2019 Jog-a-thon and Eagle Dash were applied to Vision 2020 as we continue the Phase II construction of the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium and renovate classrooms on the elementary campus. Redwood Christian Schools wishes to thank all of our students and parents who worked diligently to make the 2018-19 Jog-a-thon and Eagle Dash a huge success. We also want to thank, on behalf of each of our students, every sponsor who generously supported RCS through Jog-a-thon and the Eagle Dash.

Vision 2020

Vision 2020, a three-year campaign launched in October 2017, has completed its second year. The goal of this campaign is to raise $1.25 million to build the new Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium, renovate the classrooms at the elementary campus, and create a new science lab at the middle school and high school campus. Donations and pledges made during the 2018-19 fiscal year amounted to $315,283, and a generous grant from the Wayne and Gladys Foundation for $350,000 brought the campaign’s overall total to $1,306,204 or 104% of our goal! Much was accomplished during the 2018-19 fiscal year. Workers completed Phase I of the gymnasium, including the gym floor, bleachers, sound system, basketball hoops, and the first-floor restrooms and storage areas. Phase I was officially opened to the public for the RCS Alumni Memorial Scholarship Games on November 24, 2018. Most areas of Phase II (the locker rooms, PE offices, and the mezzanine area upstairs) were also built out, but we could not occupy these areas until the elevator installation was finished. At the elementary campus, funds from Vision 2020 financed the renovation of two third-grade classrooms on South Campus and two fourth-grade classrooms on North Campus during the summer months. A third kindergarten class was added and renovation for that classroom was also completed during this time. All renovations completed include new flooring, furniture, and paint to modernize and approve the appearance of the classrooms. We praise God for all who have contributed to Vision 2020 this past year to allow these projects to move forward. We also thank each of our supporters on behalf of all our present and future students, who will enjoy the fruits of your generosity and faithfulness for years to come!

Donor Recognition Redwood Christian Schools (RCS) is honored to recognize the individuals, families, companies, and foundations who have faithfully supported this ministry during the 2018-19 fiscal year with generous financial gifts, sponsorships, in-kind gifts, or grants. This support is vital for this ministry as tuition alone does not fully cover the cost of providing students the high-quality education RCS offers its students. These gifts were received through a variety of portals, including the Annual Fund, Vision 2020, Jog-a-thon and Eagle Dash, the Booster Club Crab Feed, grants from foundations, federal and state employee campaigns, corporation matches, in-kind gifts, and the Donate Now page found on our website. Projects and other programs that benefited from these donations include: • Phase II construction of the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium • Expansion to three kindergarten classrooms for the 2019-20 school year • Renovations of 3rd and 4th-grade classrooms (two classrooms per grade) • Renovation of the science classroom serving our TK – 3rd graders • Tuition assistance • Our outstanding athletics program • Campus safety projects

On behalf of all of our students, I wish to offer my sincere thanks to those listed on the following pages. Through their gifts, they are making an impact on the lives of each of our students that is substantial for today and eternity. Serving Christ through education, Mike Kady Director of Advancement
