ANNUAL REPORT
Redwood Christian Schools “The Education You TRUST for the Children You LOVE”

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of RCS Having become the third superintendent of RCS on July 1, 2016, I wanted to begin our 47th year of ministry in such a way as to build upon the existing foundation. Therefore, I went on a listening campaign. Privately, I referred to the 2016-17 school year as the “Year of the Ear.” My goal was to talk with as many stakeholders (parents, students, faculty, staff, alumni, alumni parents, and friends of RCS) as possible. I wanted to find out what they believed to be essential to the DNA of RCS, those items that make RCS a special and successful Christian school. As I listened, five themes emerged: Christ-centered focus, Biblical foundation, care of and for students, quality academics, and RCS graduates are prepared for the rigors of college. My listening campaign confirmed that RCS is fulfilling its mission of providing a Christ-centered education which is able to equip students for daily living and eternal life. The RCS faculty returned for Pre-Season on August 1, 2016 and started the new year with a worship service and prayer walk. The entire RCS faculty prayed for each classroom, each teacher, and the student body. We had 676 students start school on August 15, 2016. The year was filled with many exciting events, some as a part of our continuing traditions (Annual Dinner, Homecoming Week, Homecoming Banquet and Ceremony, RAD, and graduations) and some as the start of new traditions (Fabulous Five, All-American Classic, High School Weekly Sports Highlight, and the RCS Legacy Circle). On April 19, 2017 we held our ground breaking ceremony for the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium and celebrated with the entire MSHS student body what Keynote Speaker, Jim Cleveland, referred to as, “the building that will quickly become the most-used building on campus.” We finished the year with 670 students, with 100% of our senior class graduated and headed off to college, the military, or the workforce. We partnered with Enrollment Catalyst during the year with the goal of increasing enrollment for the future. As a part of this process, a parent satisfaction survey was administered. The results indicated that 91% of RCS parents were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall experience of their child(ren) at RCS. Furthermore, 88% of the parent respondents indicated that the Biblical foundation, Christian focus, and worldview integration were the primary reasons why they enrolled their child(ren) at RCS. In addition, parents stated that when they selected RCS, they placed great importance upon the academic program, safety and security of the school environment, faculty, class size, and college preparation. The 2016-17 school year was another financially successful one for RCS. We kept our expenses to a minimum and our donors continued to remain faithful in supporting the mission of RCS. We met our financial obligations and our donors enabled RCS to upgrade facilities and curriculum. Five classrooms at Redwood Christian Elementary were renovated during the summer of 2017 and new math curriculum was purchased for grades K-8. I would like to personally thank each and every donor who contributed to the ministry of RCS. Your generosity is inspiring and your investments will produce eternal dividends in the lives of the RCS students. Our students have benefited in so many ways from your contributions. You are instrumental in allowing RCS to fulfill its mission. In Christ, Al Hearne II Superintendent

Letter from the RCS Director of Advancement Since 1970, God has advanced the ministry of Redwood Christian Schools (RCS) using the generous gifts of finances and time offered by our faithful supporters. As tuition does not fully cover the cost of educating a student at RCS, these precious gifts have been used to help advance various facets of our mission and excellence. Gifts given to RCS provide for many items that are normally not included in the general budget. These include tuition grants necessary for many of our families. Your gifts equip dedicated teachers with effective educational tools such as up-to-date technologies used in our classrooms. They provide funds for improved facilities that are enjoyed by all of our students. Indeed, if the true cost of fully educating a student at RCS were passed along to our families solely through tuition, many of them simply would not be able to attend RCS. By choosing to give to RCS, you are being used by God to provide a high quality, Christ-centered education for as many students as possible. Thank you for your generosity. In the pages that follow, we desire to highlight and celebrate with you what God has accomplished at Redwood Christian Schools during the fiscal year of 2016-17. I believe you will see that the impact of the collective support RCS has received is both extensive and essential for our students, young and old alike. Serving Christ through education,
Mike Kady Director of Advancement

Annual Dinner One of the special highlights each year for our Redwood Christian Schools supporters is the Annual Dinner. The 2016 Annual Dinner was held at Canyon View in San Ramon. Our dinner guests were treated to a special evening of celebration as we honored many of the men and women of the past and present that God has used to establish the RCS ministry over the last 47 years. The program featured a march tune played by our high school band, a performance by a men’s trio, the classical guitar talents of graduating senior Sean Truscott, and an interview with alumni Nick Costanzo (Class of 2011), who serves as a California Highway Patrol officer. Superintendent Al Hearne also shared the vision God had placed on his heart for the coming year. The evening concluded with a challenge delivered by Mr. Hearne to commit to regularly pray for RCS and support the RCS ministry by giving to the Annual Fund. Dignitaries present included the founding Superintendent of RCS, Gus Enderlin; Superintendent Emeritus Bruce Johnson; President of the Castro Valley Unified School District, Jo Loss; retired Superintendent of the Castro Valley School District, Jim Negre; Castro Valley Chamber of Commerce members, Ashley Strasburg and Carol Wikle; and Superintendent of California Crosspoint Academy, Robin Hom. We wish to extend a special thanks to our Annual Dinner Sponsors whose generosity defrayed the costs of the evening.

Giving to RCS
Each gift given to Redwood Christian Schools enables RCS to stay on the cutting edge of education by providing funds for non-budgeted items. The purchase of ancillary curriculum, classroom upgrades, and new technologies were some of the benefits made possible by the $253,024 that was donated to RCS during the 2016-17 school year. RCS encourages all of our families to give generously to RCS as God enables them. Each gift, big or small, cumulatively adds up to make a tremendous impact in the lives of our students every year. RCS receives donations from a wide variety of recipients. Each year, parents, alumni, alumni parents, students and other friends of RCS give to Redwood Christian Schools. Contributions are also made by RCS board members, school administrators, faculty and staff. During the 2016-17 fiscal year, 100% of Redwood’s board and administration gave to the school. The average gift made to RCS was $264. Donations given to RCS in 2017-18 will be used to complete Phase II of the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium, unless otherwise designated. The $926,000 RCS is seeking in donations will allow for the completion of the gymnasium’s locker rooms, bleachers to seat 600 persons, training rooms, upstairs classrooms, and office spaces that will greatly enhance our physical education and athletic programs and will benefit our students for years to come.

Jog-a-thon Jog-a-thon has been the most successful and consistent fundraiser for Redwood Christian Schools for nearly four decades. Students are challenged during Jog-a-thon to enlist family and friends as sponsors to support them by donating an amount that is either firm or based upon the number of laps they walk, jog or run. Funds raised through this event are used for school projects, non-budgeted items and tuition grants. Since 1978, over $3,000,000 has been raised to support RCS. In 2016, the high school Jog-a-thon was re-introduced and renamed Eagle Dash to be more engaging to our older students. In 2017 RCS began using the services of PledgeStar, a Christianowned company that specializes in online peer-to-peer fundraising events, for both the Jog-a-thon and the Eagle Dash. The results were nothing short of amazing! With more than 350 students participating in this fundraiser, over $104,000 was raised, making it one of the most productive Jog-a-thons RCS has ever had. We thank all of our students, parents and friends who have participated in our Jog-a-thons, as well as all of the generous supporters and volunteers who gave sacrificially through their donations and time. We are looking forward to another tremendous event in 2018 as even more of our students and parents discover the ease and effectiveness of using PledgeStar and online peer-to-peer fundraising in their efforts to support RCS.

Booster Club
The RCS Booster Club is a parent volunteer organization whose goal is to support the RCS athletic programs through fundraising and support at RCS athletic events. The leadership was provided by club officers President Joe Geronimo, Vice President Eric King, Secretary Stephanie Barquero, and Treasurer Rhonda Harris. These club officers helped to direct and organize all of the fundraising events for the 2016-17 school year, including the Back-to-School BBQ, ParentCoach Night, on-campus apparel sales, Redwood Christian Basketball Invitational, Homecoming Games, Booster Club Crab/Tri Tip Feed and Auction, and support at various RCS athletic events throughout the year. Two of the major sources of income for the RCS Booster Club are apparel sales and the annual Crab Feed and Auction held the first week of February. Laura Coon, who organizes apparel sales, did an outstanding job providing a wide selection of spirit wear for purchase by RCS families. Spirit wear sales totaled $15,848 during the 2016-17 school year. One of the most exciting school-sponsored events of the year is the annual Crab Feed and Auction. A large number of volunteer help is enlisted to ensure a successful and fun evening. The kitchen help and auction organization were directed by Booster Club President Joe Geronimo. Additionally, committees and tasks were filled by volunteers within the club to take care of table decorations, auction-item basket preparation, ticket sales and seating charts, food service preparation, food server management, and set-up and take-down. The Crab Feed raised $14,662. The RCS Booster Club meets on a monthly basis throughout the school year to plan events and discuss how to best support the athletic programs of RCS. The 2016-17 Booster Club purchases included uniforms for Girls Varsity Tennis, MS Boys Soccer and MS Girls Volleyball, team bags for Varsity Boys Soccer and Varsity Baseball, Boys JV and Varsity practice jerseys, and sponsorship for travel expenses for various tournaments. The Booster Club has taken on the responsibility for raising 100% of the funds to cover the uniform needs of teams on a rotating basis for the Middle School and High School.

The Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium
The goal to have a new gymnasium on our middle school and high school campus became a closer reality in 2016-17. Redwood Christian Schools received overwhelming community support at meetings held with the neighbors of the San Lorenzo campus as well as the San Lorenzo Village Homes Association. The preparation of the building site, including the demolition of the vacant MRI building, soon followed. On April 19, 2017, a festive groundbreaking ceremony, attended by special guests and the students of the RCS MSHS campus, kicked off the building project. On May 10, RCS received permission from the county for the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium project to proceed. Shortly after our high school graduation in May, equipment was staged and construction began. Throughout the brief summer, asphalt in the student parking lot was removed and trenches for underground utilities, a new storm drain, and a new fire line were dug around the campus. The site area was graded and prepared for the pouring of concrete to lay the foundation of the building, which occurred on September 1. Over the last two months, the gymnasium went vertical as students, faculty and visitors watched the installation of the main steel supports, trusses, roof, and siding that will enclose the building. We are currently in Phase I of the twophase project. The goal of Phase I is to gain basic occupancy to be able to hold physical education classes and basic athletic events with limited seating. Phase I is expected to be completed early next year. Phase II, to be completed as funds become available, will finish the project with full seating for 600 persons, and completed locker rooms, classrooms and office spaces.
