WELCOME TO THE

Isle of Wight

For an island that spans a modest 27 miles east to west, and 13 miles north to south, the Isle of Wight packs a lot in. There are over 50 attractions, 25 beaches, and 450 independent cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants to choose from, all within just an hour’s drivetime of each other. Couple that with the stunning landscapes and relaxed pace of life, and you’ve found yourself the perfect destination! Red Funnel has been sailing holidaymakers to the Island for over 160 years, so we know it better than most. That’s why it’s our pleasure to share some of that knowledge with you, to help you plan and enjoy your holiday or break to its fullest.

Inside this guide you’ll find information and recommendations for beaches, things to do, and places to eat and stay. All our contributors live on the Island, or visit frequently, and have offered some of their insider tips for your visit. We hope the travel experiences we share will inspire you as you explore the Island, and if you’ve got any recommendations that you’d like us to consider featuring in the future, we’d love to hear about them.

Head for the hills of the West Wight for 18 holes of Football Golf at Tapnell Farm. The first nine are ideal for younger players, whilst the back nine provide trickier obstacles and longer fairways. Continue the competition with a round at Sandown and Shanklin’s seafront minigolf courses, which include smoking volcanoes and roaring dinosaurs. Shanklin’s charming clifftop park of Rylstone Gardens is home to a more traditional putting course and tearooms. Visit on a Sunday afternoon in summer for a round accompanied by a local brass band.

After an enforced hiatus, several of the Island’s festivals will be making a welcome return in 2022. The Rhythmtree Festival will celebrate world music in July, whilst the charming Chale Show will once again see crowds filling its horticultural marquees. Thousands are expected at the Garlic Festival, where celebrity chefs compete for attention with live music, falconry and fun fair rides. The Isle of Wight Festival returns to its usual weekend in June with Muse, Lewis Capaldi and Kasabian amongst the global acts who will create more unforgettable moments at Seaclose Park.

SUPERB SEASIDE DINING

Award-winning cafés, restaurants and pubs are scattered along the Island’s coastline. Try The Hut for outstanding sunsets and seafood specialities at Colwell Bay Beach. For a memorable al fresco dining experience, book a table at the True Food Kitchen. This foodies’ favourite is hidden away at one of the South Wight’s most isolated beaches. People-watchers should pop in to the Dell Café at Appley. Sip on an Island Roasted coffee as the beach buzzes with activity and motorboats cruise across the Solent.

4.

YAVERLAND BEACH

This popular spot shows off the Isle of Wight’s varied coastal landscape in one long stretch of sand. At the western end you’ll find the roaring tigers of Wildheart Animal Sanctuary and pitch-and-putt at Browns Golf Course. At its eastern end are the dominating cliffs which lead to the former military base at Culver Down. In between, you’ll find a beach which attracts kayakers, kite flyers and sandcastle builders. Palaeontologists can be spotted leading fossil-hunting trips beneath the recently exposed cliffs.

5.

BOUNCE AROUND

Get a spring in your step with a visit to The Big Bounce at Sandham Gardens on Sandown seafront with its series of interlinking nets. Cross over the road and you’ll be on the best beach in the UK, according to Countryfile Magazine. Alternatively, bounce your way around Robin Hill’s Jungle Heights with its treetop tunnels and nets. Return at night on selected dates to see the park illuminated for an evening show. For a bit of simple seaside fun, head for Appley in Ryde where you’ll find trampolines overlooking the sandy beach.

6.

INCREDIBLE ICE CREAMS

Get the latest scoop from one of the Isle of Wight’s family-owned ice cream producers. The Minghellas are famous for their outstanding ice creams and sorbets, as well as Anthony’s Oscar-winning films. Tuck into a pot of Mr Minghella’s Famous Vanilla or their signature Oriental Ginger with Honey. If you’re visiting Ventnor, stop at the Ventnorian for an ever-changing line-up of flavours at five-star rated Crave. If all that sounds too conventional, head to the Garlic Farm to enjoy a tub of garlic-flavoured ice cream.

10

7.

THE NEEDLES

The familiar rocks of The Needles remain a must-visit spot for first time visitors to the Isle of Wight. For Instagram-worthy photographs, board a pleasure boat or a high-speed RIB which circles the famous lighthouse. Back on dry land you can ride the chairlift or the carousel before walking up to the imposing headland. The National Trust’s Old Battery and New Battery tell tales of rocket launches, wartime defences and shipwrecks at The Needles. Head for the Old Battery tearooms for an unforgettable view or venture into the tunnel which leads to a windswept outpost overlooking the rocks.

8.

WORLD-CLASS WATERSPORTS

The Island’s beaches, coves and bays are a playground for the adventurous. There’s nothing quite like surfing as the sun sets at Compton Bay or kayaking to a hidden beach. Beginners often test their balance on a stand-up paddleboard, which can be hired in Colwell, St Helens, Shanklin, Sandown and Lake. Stronger swimmers should sign up for a lesson with iSurf, which tours the Island chasing the perfect waves for beginners. For something a bit different, try Wing Foiling at Wight Water in Lake or stand-up paddleboard Yoga at Tackt-Isle in St Helens.

DISCOVER HISTORY

11.

12.

As you sail alongside Cowes you’ll get a glimpse of its busy marina and seafront, which is packed with prestigious yacht clubs, trendy eateries and thriving independent shops. In the summer, Cowes Week brings a festival atmosphere to the town, with racing out on the water. An evening wander between Cowes and Gurnard is something special. Take a seat at the beach as the sun sets and enjoy the sight of silhouetted cruise ships and yachts on the Solent.

AWESOME ANIMAL SAFARIS

Take a tour of the Island’s zoos and animal sanctuaries, which are home to an impressive range of creatures. Start with the much-loved lions and tigers of Wildheart Animal Sanctuary which live alongside savannah cats and meerkats. Next, meet the eagle owls, gibbons and lemurs of Monkey Haven which continues to achieve 5/5 on TripAdvisor. Complete the tour with close encounters at Butterfly World, Amazon World, West Wight Alpacas or the Isle of Wight Reptilarium. REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

Each corner of the Isle of Wight has relics from its rich history. Military bases punctuate the coastline, from the battery at Puckpool to the guns of Fort Victoria and The Needles. Step inside King Henry VIII’s seaside fort in Yarmouth or see the window where Charles I became stuck during his failed escape from Carisbrooke Castle. For something more serene, spend an afternoon on Queen Victoria’s private beach at Osborne.

SPECTACULAR STARRY NIGHTS

The farmland and quieter coastline of the West Wight offers some of the best stargazing in the UK. For the darkest skies head for the coastal road which leads from Whale Chine in the south to Freshwater Bay in the west. On a cloudless spring evening you should get a clear view of Orion’s Belt, Gemini and The Dog Star as you face south. Beginners can take a trip to the Island’s planetarium which is based at Fort Victoria on the edge of Yarmouth. 11

ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL

RHYTHMTREE

16 – 19 June isleofwightfestival.com / Newport

8 – 10 July rhythmtree.co.uk / Cowes

This year’s Isle of Wight Festival once again brings together some of the biggest and best names in music to kick off the UK festival season in style at Seaclose Park in Newport. Gracing the main stage this year are Lewis Capaldi, Madness, Kasabian, Muse, Rudimental, and many more. There are loads of different stages across the site, with a whole host of other entertainment, including fairground rides and a big wheel. The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival attracted a record 500,000+ attendees, and whilst the modern equivalent can’t cater for quite that many, it still hosts around 55,000 people every year!

Rhythmtree is one of the best family-friendly events you’ll find anywhere in the UK. Known for offering a diverse and rich selection of live music and partnered with a wide range of entertainment for all ages, this safe and friendly festival is an absolute dream. They’ve forged much of their reputation by focusing on creating a warm and welcoming vibe and atmosphere, with creative and innovative features throughout. This year Rhythmtree moves to a new location, near Cowes, with a site offering spectacular sea views out across the Solent. Alongside this, they also bring some of the biggest names from world music to their various stages and areas over the weekend.

VENTNOR FRINGE

LITERARY FESTIVAL

Inspired by Edinburgh’s world-famous Fringe, this 10-day event transforms the most southerly town of the Island, Ventnor, with pop-up bars, boutique venues and hidden gems. A wealth of talent can be seen throughout the course of the Fringe, varying between live music, impromptu Shakespeare, rap battles, poetry and standup comedy. There’s a mixture of ticketed and free events to explore, and a visit to Ventnor to experience what has become a unique Island tradition is simply a must.

The Isle of Wight Literary Festival is an opportunity for book-lovers to celebrate the written and spoken word. A series of talks and workshops take place at venues around Cowes, including the iconic Northwood House, with a whole range of topics and genres. No matter what your literary taste, the highly acclaimed programme is bursting with fantastic writers and speakers who are sure to make it an unforgettable long weekend.

ACTIVITIES

WALK THE WIGHT

SCOOTER RALLY

Yes, the Isle of Wight is small enough for you to walk from one side to the other in a day. But before you start brushing off your walking boots, bear in mind the 26.5 mile walk from Bembridge to The Needles isn’t an easy one! Walk the Wight invites walkers to take on the challenge every year, with an incredible 10,000+ taking part, raising money for Mountbatten Hospice. The views along the way are spectacular, and you’ll travel through several places that are usually inaccessible – you can also opt for half distance walks if you don’t fancy the full challenge.

If you love old school Vespas and vintage Lambrettas (or even shiny new ones), you’ll quite often see them on the Isle of Wight roads in the warmer months. But no time is quite like August Bank Holiday, when over 5,000 scooters descend on the Island for the Isle of Wight International Scooter Rally! Scooterists will undoubtedly get the most out of this event, but for the general public the traditional Sunday rideout (from Ryde!) is a real spectacle, with thousands of riders showing off their scooters along the esplanade before starting off in convoy for a trip around the Island at around lunchtime.

COWES WEEK

TOUR OF BRITAIN

Cowes Week has become an iconic highlight in the British sporting calendar. Originally starting in 1826, it is the largest and longest running annual sailing regatta event in the world. Across the eight days of the event, competitive racing takes centre stage with around 8,000 people competing and up to 100,000 spectators watching. Alongside the main event, many venues and pop-ups around Cowes host a fantastic line-up of entertainment.

The UK’s largest and most prestigious professional cycling event heads to the Isle of Wight for the first time ever in September, for the nail-biting final stage of the race! The stage will start on the east of the Island in Ryde, with 19 of the world’s top teams racing across the Island’s picturesque (but challenging) landscapes towards the finish line.

FAMILY

ROUND THE ISLAND RACE

THE GARLIC FESTIVAL

Renowned as the world’s largest yacht race, the Round the Island race sees around 1,400 boats and over 16,000 sailors compete in the unique race anti-clockwise around the Isle of Wight. Beginning and ending in Cowes, the race spans around 50 nautical miles and can take anywhere from three to ten hours. Not much of a sailor? It’s a spectacular sight for spectators, with boats passing by many viewing points where you can set up a picnic and make a day of it! Some key vantage points include The Needles Battery, St Catherine’s Point, Culver Down and Ryde Pier.

A staple in the Island calendar, the unique Isle of Wight Garlic Festival usually takes place on the 3rd weekend in August. There is plenty to do for all ages and interests, with children’s activities, craft stalls, a fun fair, live music, food demonstrations and samplings and, most importantly, a shed load of garlic! With so much garlic grown locally, you can expect to see, taste, feel and smell it everywhere you go – so not recommended for vampires!

BROOK

parking dog Dinosaur fans often make a beeline for this sandy beach, for the fossilised dino footprints that appear at low tides. There is also a petrified forest further along the beach at Hanover Point, which is visible at low tides. Swimming and sunbathing are popular at Brook, although care should be taken as it can be rocky in parts. 3

malefemale parking utensils dog There are three beaches to choose from here. Bembridge Point runs to the edge of the harbour, with a large sandbank at low tide, Under Tyne to the north of the lifeboat station is sandy below the shore line, and good for swimming, and Forelands, which curves around the most easterly point of the Island and has rockpools to explore when the tide is out.

COLWELL BAY

malefemale parking utensils Great for swimming and sunsets, Colwell Beach is a sandy beach which is very popular with families and watersports fans. At the back of the beach are rows of brightly decorated beach huts, and a restaurant which attracts many diners by boat in the summer months.

9 APPLEY - FOR FAMILIES

The wide sandy shores of Appley Beach are a playground for beachgoers. The tide goes right out, leaving loads of space for games, sunbathing and sandcastle-building, and the gentle incline makes it a great beach for paddling in the sea. There are two large car parks nearby, offering easy access, and a woodland area and park to explore to the rear. For ice creams and refreshments there’s a choice of two cafés at either end of the beach.

19

COMPTON BAY

malefemale parking Once considered the “locals’ secret”, Compton Bay has in recent years found itself as one of the Island’s most popular beaches with both visitors and locals. A long sandy beach, with rugged sandstone cliffs and stunning views of the white chalk cliffs. Great waters for swimming and watersports, and good for families, just bear in mind it gets very busy in the summer. 5

COWES

malefemale parking utensils Just along from the main parade in Cowes is the town’s main beach, which is mainly shingle and pebble. It’s safe for swimming and tends to be at its busiest in July and August, on account of the fact it’s one of the best spots to watch the sailing events. 6

EAST COWES

malefemale parking utensils Just outside East Cowes, along the esplanade, is this shingle and sand beach, with fabulous views back across to West Cowes and its harbour. A great place to visit if you’re looking for a quieter beach in the main season, it’s good for swimming, and has woodland to the rear with some short walks to explore. 7

8

BEACHES

For the best summer sunsets, head to the beaches on the north side of the Island. Gurnard Beach is one of the finest for watching the sun go down, with its row of well-kept beach huts providing the perfect foreground for a photo. On a warm day, grab an ice cream and take the flat walk along the promenade from nearby Cowes to Gurnard, enjoying the setting sun as you wander.

RYDE EAST

malefemale parking utensils As with Ryde’s other beaches, the tide goes right out here, leaving lots of open space for relaxing, sunbathing and beach fun. Its golden sands are good for swimming, but we’d recommend waiting for high tide, when you’ve got less of a walk to the shoreline. To the rear of the beach is a playground, traditional amusements, and boating lake, with the main town just a short walk away. 15

SANDOWN

malefemale parking utensils Long sandy beaches are a feature of the Bay area, and Sandown’s is one of the most popular spots. Instantly recognisable for the traditional pleasure pier halfway along, there are plenty of places to eat, shop, and entertain yourself along this stretch of beach and seafront. Deckchairs and sun loungers are available to hire from beach outlets.

OSBORNE

malefemale utensils Not many places can boast a “royal” beach, other than the Isle of Wight! You’ll have to pay to enter the house and grounds at Osborne to experience this one, but it’s a great place for a paddle and picnic. There’s a café serving delicious Minghella ice cream at the beach, and they host traditional Punch and Judy shows in the summer.

REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

23

FOR EXPLORING - 20 FRESHWATER BAY

malefemale parking utensils

If you’re looking for a beach to visit on a grey day, or prefer skimming stones to sunbathing, you need to drop in at Freshwater Bay. Most of the beach is covered in pebbles, and the steeper inclines lead to some impressive waves on stormy days. The old smugglers’ caves at the eastern end of the bay can be reached at very low tides, but it is easy to get cut off, so only recommended for strong swimmers, or if you’re exploring with a paddleboard or kayak. At the western end of the beach there is some sand, and rockpools at lower tides, and for some impressive views back over the bay, follow the coast path east towards Compton. 11

SEAGROVE

malefemale dog Seagrove has several large seaside properties to its rear and is one of the Island’s most exclusive-looking beaches. Whilst it’s mainly shingle and stone above the tide line, when the tide is out there’s a large expanse of sand, making it popular for bathing, beach activities and watersports. It’s also the main access for neighbouring Priory Bay beach, which is one of the Island’s hidden gems. 10

SPRINGVALE

parking A long stretch of sand and shingle, linking Ryde’s beaches to Seaview. Springvale beach is popular for sailing and windsurfing and is a good alternative to some of the busier beaches in the summer if you’re looking to do some sunbathing and swimming. There’s a nice walk through a nature reserve to the back of the beach.

For beach locations see map on pages 66 & 67

24

| ISLE OF WIGHT GUIDE 2022 EDITION

12

ST HELENS

malefemale parking utensils dog A long stretch of sandy beach and dunes, which runs to the entrance of Bembridge Harbour. The old church overlooks the beach at St Helens, with the former golf course of the “Duver” supplying lots of green outdoor space to explore. Watersports and adventure activities are popular here, with an activity centre at the edge of the harbour. 2

TOTLAND BAY

malefemale parking utensils dog Often a quieter beach than some of its neighbours, due to its predominantly shingle makeup. However, Totland Bay has all the great views of neighbouring Colwell, and if you can wait for the tide to recede enough to reveal the sandier parts, is just as good for swimming. The end of the small pier is (at the time of writing) still in the process of being refurbished, but a contemporary beach café/restaurant has opened at the top.

malefemale

.

BEACHES There are plenty of options if you’re looking to do a spot of sea swimming. Shanklin Beach is one of the best, with extensive stretches of golden sands minimising your potential rock encounters, and a steady gradient from the shore to the sea, meaning you won’t have to walk for miles before the water reaches above your knees. The waters are highly rated for their cleanliness, and there’s usually a lifeguard on duty during the season, so it’s also one of the safest Island beaches to go for a dip. 17

VENTNOR

malefemale parking utensils Another of the Island’s traditional seafronts and beaches, albeit with a more recently built bandstand and small harbour for fishing boats at the eastern end. The beach is made up of shingle and sand and has rows of former Victorian bathing machines which are now converted to beach huts. It’s great for swimming, and there are plenty of places to grab an ice cream or snack during a visit.

YAVERLAND

malefemale parking utensils Curving round from the southern edge of Culver Down, until it meets Sandown’s main beach, Yaverland is a complete contrast to its more traditional neighbour. With chalk cliffs at one end, and sandstone cliffs to the rear, this sandy beach is more alike to those found on the west side of the Island. Along with being a popular beach for swimming and watersports, it’s also good for fossil hunting.

WATCOMBE BAY - If you’re a keen kayaker, or have access to a boat, make sure to explore Watcombe Bay on a calm day. Pretty much only accessible from the sea, round to the west of Freshwater Bay, this beach has tall chalk cliffs to the rear and a fabulous outlook into the channel.

REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

STEEPHILL COVE - A charming cove made up of fishermen’s cottages, colourful beach huts, cosy eateries and a sheltered sand and shingle beach. The waters are great for swimming, and there are rockpools to explore at lower tides. The easiest way to access Steephill Cove is to park at the western end of Ventnor esplanade and follow the coast path along for approximately 900 metres.

BEACHES

WHITECLIFF BAY - One of the Island’s most beautiful beaches, but also one of the toughest to access. Guests of the holiday park above can take advantage of a shuttle service, but otherwise you’ll have to walk from either Bembridge or Culver, then navigate the very steep slope down to the beach. Aim to go at low tide, as the beach all but disappears when it’s high.

BONCHURCH MONKS BAY - Set in a secluded little bay at the edge of the village of Bonchurch, this beach is a mix of sand and shingle, with rock breakwaters. Formerly a landing spot for smugglers, there are a few houses down by the shore and mainly woodland to the rear. With no parking at the bay, the most scenic way to get here is a mile-long hike from Ventnor seafront. However, there is a small car park on Shore Rd in Bonchurch if you’d prefer to limit the walk.

OUTDOOR ISLAND

adventures

The Isle of Wight’s contrasting landscapes, rugged coastline, flat sandy beaches, and unique weather and microclimate, make it a playground for watersports and activities. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find some of the best (and most challenging) Isle of Wight adventures in the great outdoors.

KAYAKING A kayak’s combination of stability and manoeuvrability gives it the edge over paddleboards for those chasing adventure. Covering a distance against a tide is an intense workout but you’ll be rewarded with beaches and bays which few have stepped on. The first challenge is to battle through the breaking waves – approaching them head on is the only option. Once you reach calmer waters, you’ll see tantalising glimpses of unoccupied bays with looming cliffs and perilous caves. Adventurers with their own kayaks often visit Newtown Creek or tackle the choppy waters of Freshwater Bay, Brook or Compton. Inexperienced kayakers should sign up for an expert-led “safari session” with Tackt-Isle. tackt-isle.co.uk

COASTEERING One of the most hands-on ways to explore parts of the Island’s rugged coastline is to sign yourself up to a coasteering session. You’ll find yourself scrambling around the shore, hopping over rocks, cliff diving, riding the surges in the swell, and discovering hidden caves. This activity will grant you access to various locations and views that are generally off limits, unless you’re travelling by boat or paddleboard; but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The right equipment and an experienced guide who knows the tides are essential. The best (and safest) way to enjoy one of these adventures is to sign up to a guided coasteering experience with Freshwater Bay Coasteering. fbciow.com REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

PADDLEBOARDING Stand-up paddleboarders crave calm waters and deep red sunsets for memorable summertime outings. Balance is the key to staying afloat and picking up the most speed. The boards are wide and long, but a strong current or even a small wave requires concentration and correction from the boarder. Experienced stand-up paddleboarders can cover a good distance. Beginners should visit Colwell in the West Wight on a calm day to hire a board from Sup Dog Rentals supdogrentals.co.uk. In the East Wight, you’ll find hourly paddleboard rental in St Helens, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin. Explorers can hire boards by the day from Two Elements in Cowes. twoelements.co.uk

SURFING Seasoned surfers head straight to the south coast of the Island to chase the biggest and best waves at the far end of Compton Bay. First-timers should book a lesson at iSurf iowsurf.com. Within minutes you’ll be out in the water, clinging tightly to the sides of your board and glancing behind at the oncoming waves. As the wave’s power increases you’ll attempt to stand on the board – ideally in one smooth motion. At first, you’ll struggle to stand and find yourself tossed and turned by the breaking waves. Hold your breath, protect your head with your wrists in an X-shape, and get straight back into the water. Once you can finally ride a wave whilst standing you’ll realise that there’s no feeling quite like it.

PARAGLIDING Few sports can match the intense adrenaline rush of leaping off a clifftop and gliding above the shoreline. The Isle of Wight’s climate gives it plenty of “flyable days” for local thrill seekers. For a one-of-a-kind holiday experience, sign up for a tandem flight with High Adventure Paragliding highadventureparagliding.co.uk. Over a couple of hours you’ll learn the basics before feeling your feet leave the ground – most likely overlooking the West Wight, with its farmland and colossal cliffs. Take a minute to steady your nerves and then enjoy one of the best views you’ll ever see.

CYCLING

48

|

Lonely Planet named the Isle of Wight as one of the 10 best cycling destinations in the world, and it’s easy to see why. The diverse terrain offers an appealing mix of road cycling, touring and mountain biking. Experienced riders should attempt to conquer the 53-mile Chalk Ridge Extreme. You’ll face mud tracks, treacherous chalk, and exhausting climbs. The notorious Tennyson Trail makes up one of the most difficult sections. An alternative test of stamina is the 64-mile circular route of the Island, which includes leg-aching sections of the South Wight. Bike hire options include Wight Cycle Hire wightcyclehire.co.uk and Route Fifty7 routefifty7.com. ISLE OF WIGHT GUIDE 2021 EDITION

HORSE RIDING

EXPLORE EAST

An early morning canter along a beach at low tide is a special experience for a horse rider. The East Wight beaches of St Helens and Priory Bay are two of the best locations for leaving horseshoe prints in the sand. Sally’s Riding School sallysridingschool.com and Hill Farm Stables hillfarmstables.com both offer beach riding experiences. A further 165 miles of bridleway criss-cross the Island for further adventures and exploration.

WALKING Hikers who visit the South Wight are rewarded with far-reaching views and a thorough cardio workout. The coastal path and the hills around Ventnor, St Lawrence and Blackgang are the steepest and most challenging on the Island. Similarly impressive views can be found on the climb from Freshwater Bay to the Tennyson Monument. Continue on to The Needles and the heather-covered hills of Headon Warren. For a family-friendly stroll along the beach, try Yaverland, Compton Bay or Cowes seafront.

SAILING The waters off the Island are to sailing what Monaco is to motor racing, offering sporting history and close contact encounters. Crews must work together to exploit the elements and gain an edge over their opponents. Sailors come to Cowes in their thousands each summer, but newcomers to the sport can quickly learn the ropes. Sign up for private lessons at a watersports centre tackt-isle.co.uk or wightwaters.com or a family day at the UK Sailing Academy uksa.org.

TREE CLIMBING Goodleaf tree climbing goodleaf.co.uk combines the skills of rock climbing with the thrills of high ropes from its base overlooking the beach at Appley. Adventurers climb from branch to branch, stretching for a solid foothold and heaving themselves up to the next level. Looking down is not advised as you ascend 50 feet and begin to tower over surrounding trees. From the top, take time to admire the sea view, lie down in a hammock and prepare for your descent with a slice of flapjack.

RAINY DAYS OUT The Island prides itself on being one of the sunniest places in the UK. However, rainy days can happen! So, what do you do when the weather’s not looking too hot? Don’t worry, there are plenty of all-weather attractions and things to do that will keep the entire family happy.

EMBRACE THE ELEMENTS No matter your age, it’s always fun to get out in the elements with the family and have some outdoor adventures in the rain. So, grab your wellies (and maybe a wetsuit) and give these a try… • Woodland Walks – explore the Island under the shelter of tree canopies. Firestone Copse, Parkhurst Forest and Bouldnor Forest are all beautiful spots, with a good network of paths to explore. • Watersports – you’re already getting wet, so why not head out to sea and tackle some watersports, like stand-up paddleboarding or surfing with iSurf. • Beach Walks – wrap up warm and get out to explore some of the Island’s beaches. Look out for easy walks along the sea walls from Ventnor to Bonchurch, and Sandown to Shanklin.

FOR OLDER KIDS / TEENAGERS Some adrenaline-inducing ideas to entice teenagers away from their phones and straight into Isle of Wight activities… • Go Karting – according to Wight Karting’s customers, whizzing round the 520m floodlight track is more fun in the rain! Their Junior Track sessions are perfect for ages 8-15. • Wipe Out at the Aqua Park – fans of Total Wipeout will love the 20+ obstacle course at the Isle of Wight Aqua Park. Great fun for confident swimmers aged 8 and over. • Bowling & Laser Quest – at Ryde Superbowl you’ve got two boredom-busting activities under one roof. 50

| ISLE OF WIGHT GUIDE 2022 EDITION

FOR ADULTS Rainy days are a great excuse for adults to get out and sample the local produce, artisans and heritage. Here are some ideas to get you started… • Retail Therapy – there are plenty of boutique stores in the main towns, with lots of local treats to explore. The Garlic Farm and Isle of Wight Distillery are perfect places to pick up gifts and just relax with your partner or friends. • Get Crafty – learn to make something with a hands-on workshop. Book in at The Jewellery Cabin, near Newport, to create yourself a unique pendant or set of earrings. The Quay Arts also runs regular workshops and courses for anyone looking to get creative. • Take a trip back in time – the Island boasts some fantastic indoor heritage attractions, including Queen Victoria’s palace by the sea at Osborne, and one of the UK’s finest Roman sites, Brading Roman Villa.

FOR YOUNGER KIDS Keeping the youngest entertained is always a priority, so try these fun all-weather attractions that will beat the boredom and bring on the smiles… • Indoor Soft Play – you’re spoiled for choice for indoor fun, with several attractions, including Monkey Madness and JR Zone, offering extensive soft play centres for your little ones to run wild. • Meet the Animals – spend the day at a part-covered animal attraction, such as Tapnell Farm Park or Amazon World, and meet some new furry friends and exotic creatures. • Seaside Amusements – the tried and tested way to have fun on a rainy holiday, there are good sized traditional amusements at Shanklin Seafront with indoor mini-golf and more to enjoy.

EXPLORE THE ISLAND One of the Isle of Wight’s greatest features is its many contrasts and variations. However, if you think this means you’ll be travelling for hours between destinations, think again! The Island is just under 23 miles wide, and 13 miles top to bottom, so regardless of where you choose to visit, you’re never very far from the next essential location on your list. Whether you’re staying locally, visiting for the day, or just passing through, our Explore guide breaks the Island up into areas to give you a flavour of each of them. Let us take you for a quick hop around the Island to explore the main towns, villages and areas, with some recommendations for places to go, things to look out for, and top tips to help you get the most out of your Isle of Wight stay!

EXPLORE NORTH

EXPLORE NORTH The north of the Island is extremely popular for sailing and boating, encompassing a shoreline that stretches along the Solent channel, the wider parts of the River Medina and Wootton Creek. You’ll also discover some of the Island’s most significant history here, with the world’s largest sailing regatta at Cowes and Queen Victoria’s royal palace by the sea at Osborne.

GURNARD

WHY GO? Less than a mile to the west of Cowes is the village of Gurnard. The waters here are very popular for sailing and watersports, but undoubtedly one of the most striking features of Gurnard is its jaw-dropping sunsets. Park along Locals and dog walkers often head round the back of the village’s sailing club towards a hidden beach which backs on to woodland. the esplanade on a clear evening, find yourself a great spot to watch (behind the beach huts is a great photo spot), and kick back and enjoy the show.

WEST COWES EXPLORE NORTH

WHY GO? The vibrant streets of West Cowes contain a mixture of boutique-style shops, traditional pubs and inns, and trendy cafés and restaurants. During the sailing season the harbour and waterfront is a hive of action. Cowes Week, which takes place every year in early August, draws large crowds to watch the competition out on the water. Enjoy the festival atmosphere in the town, with entertainment, live music events, and a grand finale fireworks display.

FEELING HUNGRY?

Many of the best pubs and restaurants in Cowes are around the pedestrianised town centre, which has a lovely buzz to it during summer evenings. Foodies after a memorable dining experience should book a table at Call It What You Want (ciwyw.co.uk) or Moocow (moocowstuff.com). For sea views and sunsets, try the New Holmwood Restaurant (newholmwoodhotel.co.uk) which is located right on the seafront, just out of the main town. For something less formal, catch some live music at The Anchor (theanchorcowes.co.uk) or get a fish and chip takeaway from Corries Cabin. Walk for five minutes to the benches on The Parade for the best views.

TOP TIP – A SEAFRONT STROLL

If sailing’s not your thing, there’s still plenty to explore. Call into SLAB Artisan Fudge (slabfudge.co.uk) for a resident favourite such as rocky road fudge, or go for a limited edition flavour. Nearby Richmonds Bakery (iowbakery.com) has an outstanding reputation and a daily selection of showstoppers. For posh souvenirs, visit The Food Hamper (facebook.com/thefoodhamper), which offers luxurious gift hampers of Island produce. Just outside town, on the main road to Newport, you’ll find the Wight Military & Heritage Museum (wmahm.org.uk). Visitors are invited to climb onboard for an armoured vehicle ride with one of the ex-service volunteers. Phone ahead to check these are running.

The half-hour walk from Gurnard to Cowes is a family-friendly favourite. Park by the green beach huts at the Gurnard end of the walk, rather than parking in busy Cowes. You then follow a wide pavement along the seafront which is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Choose from the many pubs and cafés in Cowes, or return to Gurnard for the playground and a seafront pub called The Woodvale (hotelcowes.co.uk). For a quirkier journey, hire an en-route e-scooter (beryl.cc/bikeshare/isle-of-wight). 56

EAST COWES

WHY GO? East Cowes is perhaps best known for Queen Victoria’s royal palace at Osborne (english-heritage.org.uk/osborne). If you’re on the west side of the town, catch the floating bridge which runs from early morning to late at night. On reaching East Cowes, if you’re on foot, catch the number four bus or walk for about one mile to the Osborne entrance. Osborne offers something for almost any visitor, with the house and its many collections, and extensive grounds and gardens. During the warmer months,

WOOTTON BRIDGE

WHY GO? The village of Wootton is found midway between the two major towns of Ryde and Newport and is most recognisable for its tidal creek, and large mill pond, which sit either side of its namesake bridge. There are several great walks in this area, one of which takes you through to Woodside Bay, the location of the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival. Over 100,000 festival-goers descended on the village for this event, which was headlined by Bob Dylan.

EXPLORE NORTH

East Cowes doesn’t have as many places to eat out as West Cowes, but there are a few standout options. Prego (pregoiow.uk) offers excellent quality and straightforward Italian dining. For paninis and waffles, head for comic-book themed Comicoffee (comicoffee.uk). It was a winner at the Red Funnel Isle of Wight Awards in 2021 and now has three branches across the Island. Good-quality pub food is available at The Lifeboat (thelifeboatcowes.co.uk) which is hidden away on the River Medina, a five-minute drive from our East Cowes terminal.

TOP TIP - SNOUT AND ABOUT

Pick up a bag of pig feed on a visit to Quarr Abbey (quarrabbey.org) which will be enthusiastically gobbled by the resident pigs. The Abbey is one of the Isle of Wight’s most popular free attractions with an active Benedictine monastery, woodland walks and a café with plenty of outdoor seating. There’s also a visitor centre and an art gallery. If you fancy a walk of about 1.5 miles each way, head through the woods towards the hidden-away Player’s Beach.

head for the royal beach to watch a traditional Punch and Judy show. If you also plan to visit Carisbrooke Castle, then it is worth considering English Heritage Membership. The beach at East Cowes isn’t the sort of place that you’ll be building sandcastles. However, it is a pleasant spot for a wander whilst watching yachts and ferries in Cowes harbour.

TOP TIP - A PLAYGROUND WITH A VIEW

The seafront playground at East Cowes is an excellent time-filler if you arrive on the Island before your accommodation check-in time. Turn left before Waitrose as you exit our East Cowes terminal and make your way to the Esplanade. There’s a zip wire for older children and a large outdoor paddling pool if you don’t mind unpacking the swimming bag. Parents can get a coffee at the café by the park and watch the boats come and go. EXPLORE CENTRAL

EXPLORE CENTRAL In the middle of the Island you’ll find the county town of Newport, which is surrounded by a series of smaller villages with impressive downland stretching away to the south and east.

NEWPORT

WHY GO? Shopping in Newport offers less of a distraction from mainland life than other Isle of Wight towns, but it has its own charm. Seek out independent shops including The Little Nook (thelittlenook.co.uk), which stocks a wide range of local produce, crafts, and gifts. “Zero waste” store Peach (peach-veganzerowaste.co.uk) caters for vegan diners in its cosy café. St Thomas’ Square is the place for al fresco lunch, with cafés and restaurants including French Franks (frenchfranks.co.uk) and Toto (totoiow. co.uk). Nearby, you’ll find the small Museum of Island History and Watchbell Lane, which must be the Island’s narrowest shopping street. If you’ve got a few minutes, pop into homeware and hardware store W Hurst & Sons (hurst-iw.co.uk) in nearby Holyrood Street. It’s a local favourite which offers a shopping experience which has disappeared from most mainland high streets.

Head from here down to Quay Arts (quayarts.org), which has art galleries to visit, a craft shop selling locally made gifts and a café bar with riverside terrace. This side of Newport is also home to the Isle of Wight Festival in June. Outside of festival time you can explore the park and arboretum or walk along the banks of the River Medina to see the remains of paddle steamer ship “Ryde Queen”. A short drive from Newport is the imposing Carisbrooke Castle (english-heritage.org.uk) where Charles I was imprisoned before his execution. A free alternative is the one mile walk around the Castle’s grounds. Children will love running up and down the dry moat. From the Castle, walk to Carisbrooke Priory (carisbrookepriory.org.uk) – a less well-known historic gem on the Island. The former nunnery is now a house of prayer which is free to visit. Explore the atmospheric cloisters, chapel and courtyard garden or stop for a coffee in the tea rooms. Call ahead, as it’s not open every day.

TOP TIP – MONKEYING AROUND

The number one “thing to do” on the Isle of Wight according to Tripadvisor reviews is, more often than not, the fantastic Monkey Haven (monkeyhaven.org), just outside Newport. This primate rescue centre has won several high-profile awards, with its collection of happy animals, knowledgeable staff, and an immaculate park. Once you’ve met the monkeys, head up the road to Briddlesford Farm (briddlesford.co.uk), to sample a tasty menu of fresh seasonal food from the Island’s farmers and growers at the Bluebell Café. In the school holidays you can often book onto farm tours, just don’t forget your wellies! REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

EXPLORE CENTRAL

WHY GO? The picturesque village of Godshill is home to much of the Island’s older architecture and the “chocolate box” cottages that have adorned the front of many postcards. Explore the emporium of shops at the Old Smithy (theoldsmithy.com), which links up with the large free car park. Children will enjoy the small detour through the model-filled Old Smithy Gardens. You’ll then emerge onto Godshill’s main street, which is furnished with traditional tearooms and quirky shops. Check out the delightful Godshill Model Village (modelvillagegodshill.co.uk), which depicts

FEELING HUNGRY?

For a traditional Godshill experience, try a cream tea at Worsleys (facebook.com/ worsleystearooms). Cook and Baker (cookandbaker.co.uk) offers a more modern style of café lunch in a stone cottage with gardens. Vegans should veer off the main road and head along Church Hollow to Tansy’s Pantry (tansyspantry.co.uk). The restaurant and café has earned many plaudits with its plant-based menu. For gastropub food, try the Taverners (thetavernersgodshill.co.uk) on the main street. Expect locally sourced ingredients, served in charming surroundings. The Griffin (thegriffiniow.co.uk) is a popular pub which is a family favourite thanks to its play area. Godshill, and the nearby resort of Shanklin, in perfect miniature, surrounded by award-winning gardens. Nearby Chocolate Island (islelovechocolate.co.uk) is a must-visit for visitors with a sweet tooth, with many of their chocolate creations made on site. THE DOWNS AND SURROUNDING AREA

EXPLORE CENTRAL

WHY GO? When you hear reference to “The Downs” on the Isle of Wight, it usually refers to the central area of Arreton, Mersley, Ashey and Brading downs. Southern Vectis’s open top bus tours will show you the best views during the warmer months. Travel as a group or buy a Rover + Breezer ticket for the best value. It’s valid for 24 hours, so canny visitors spend one afternoon on The Downs tour and the next morning on The Needles open top bus tour. The valleys surrounding the downland are known for farming and local produce. Isle of Wight tomatoes produced in Arreton can be found in most supermarkets. At Arreton Barns (arretonbarns.co.uk) you’ll discover resident artists and craftspeople, as well as a farm shop, a shipwreck heritage centre and a popular pub (dairymansdaughter.co.uk). Further east, along the Arreton Valley, is the famous Garlic Farm (thegarlicfarm.co.uk). Entry is free but it’s worth paying a few pounds for the tractor trailer tour of the farmland.

TOP TIP – HEAD FOR THE HILL

To the north of the main downs road, set in the opposite valley is Robin Hill (robin-hill.com), which is the sister park to Blackgang Chine. The extensive woodland, toboggan run and other rides should provide a whole day’s entertainment for junior school-aged children. To make the most of your ticket, visit towards the start of your holiday and return for free within seven days. During school holidays, come back in the evening to see the park lit up and catch a family-friendly show in the woodland amphitheatre. REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

RYDE

WHY GO? Ryde combines traditional seaside fun, Victorian architecture and unexpected hidden gems. Enjoy a long spacious sandy beach, a thriving independent shopping scene and a whole host of great places to eat out. Shop vintage clothes at The Velvet Pig (thevelvetpig.com), designer interiors at Bou Chic (bouchic.co.uk) or combine coffee with fashion at House of Zabre (facebook.com/zabreiow). The shops in Royal Victoria Arcade are also worth an explore, with the adjoining underground museum which incorporates the Donald McGill Museum (saucyseasidepostcards.com), paying homage to the “King of the Saucy Seaside Postcard” from the early 20th century.

EXPLORE EAST

EXPLORE EAST TOP TIP / ALL ABOARD!

The Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum (iwbusmuseum.org.uk) is an excellent rainy day activity. Entry is free and there’s a collection of about 20 vehicles, most of which can be boarded and explored. Along similar lines is the Isle of Wight Steam Railway (iwsteamrailway.co.uk). Rail enthusiasts should board the recently upgraded modern trainline at Ryde Pierhead and then change at Smallbrook Station for the steam train to Havenstreet.

The golden sands of Appley in Ryde are the home of beach sports on the Island. The sprawling seafront provides much entertainment with two playgrounds, a splash park and a boating lake. If a swim in the sea doesn’t appeal, visit the Waterside Swimming Pool which retracts its roof on sunny days. Continue along the seafront until you reach the Dell Cafe (dellcafe.com) for a coffee by the beach huts of Appley. Behind you is Goodleaf (goodleaf.co.uk), where you can sign up for a tree climbing lesson.

FEELING HUNGRY?

Ryde has an abundance of places to satisfy most appetites. For lunchtime meze, book a table at Ada Mediterranean Kitchen (adamediterraneanryde.co.uk). Popular cafés include No.64 (no64ryde.com) and The Wonky Goat (thewonkygoat.co.uk). For an evening out, spread your wings and try The Duck (theduckiow.co.uk) or Heron (heroniow.co.uk). Both offer modern cuisine near to the seafront. Meanwhile, Michelangelo’s (ristorantemichelangelo.co.uk) combines authentic Italian food with an integrated delicatessen. REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

SEAVIEW

WHY GO? The biggest draw in St Helens is its mostly-sandy beach, in the shadow of a ruined church. Dogs are welcome all year round and EXPLORE EAST

WHY GO? Much of Seaview’s reputation as an upmarket Edwardian resort was built on its panoramic sea views and sandy beaches. These are still two of its biggest assets.

ST HELENS

In August, the village regatta (seaviewvillageregatta.co.uk) brings locals out onto the water for yacht races and tug of war competitions. The beach of Springvale offers some of the best views, straight across to Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower and the famous Solent forts. Following the coast path takes you around the village and onto the more sheltered Seagrove Beach. Venture through the woods to Priory Bay for an idyllic sandy beach with a woodland backdrop.

FEELING HUNGRY?

The Old Fort (theoldfortseaview.co.uk) is a popular choice for seafront dining in a lively setting. Round the corner is Aquitania within the Seaview Hotel (seaviewhotel.co.uk), which has a Michelin Bib Gourmand award.

will have plenty of space for exercise at low tide. National Trust members should drive past the main seafront and park for free slightly further along. Spare a few minutes for a walk around the former Victorian golf course behind the beach, which is known as The Duver.

Just outside the village is the Mermaid Bar, home of the Isle of Wight Distillery (isleofwightdistillery.com) and Mermaid Gin. You’ll see the distinctive blue bottles of this locally made spirit in bars across the Island and beyond.

TOP TIP / A LARK IN THE PARK

Puckpool Park is a family favourite for a good value afternoon. Begin by exploring the Victorian gun battery or playing your way round the charmingly old-fashioned minigolf course. The playground is an excellent time filler with something for most ages and there is plenty of green space for ball games. Sit down with an ice cream or a delicious pizza from the Old Barracks café (theoldbarracks. co.uk). The far end of the park also provides a quick and easy route through to the sands of Appley Beach. REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

73

BEMBRIDGE EXPLORE EXPLORE EAST EAST

WHY GO? Bembridge must be the UK’s only village with an airport, a windmill and a lifeboat station. It is also home to a museum, several churches, a harbour, three beaches, a small high street and half a dozen pubs and cafés. Start with the dog-friendly beach by Bembridge Lifeboat Station (bembridgelifeboat.org.uk). Take a walk along the pier to see the lifeboat which hangs at a 45-degree angle, ready to launch into the Solent. The beach at Bembridge is the best on the Island for rockpooling. Check the tide times, pick up a bucket and net from the RNLI shop and compete to find the biggest crab.

FEELING HUNGRY?

Waterside dining doesn’t get much closer than The Best Dressed Crab (thebestdressedcrabintown.co.uk) which serves seafood on a floating restaurant in Bembridge Harbour. Seafood fans should also check out the al-fresco Beach Hut (isleofwightbeachcafe. co.uk). WW Woodford & Sons (woodfordandsons.co.uk) delicatessen in the centre of the village is famous for its sausage rolls, which were described as the “best ever” by TV chef James Martin.

BRADING

WHY GO? Park up at the top of town near the Norman church of St Mary’s and take a wander along the main street to appreciate some of Brading’s interesting heritage, including the slightly gory remnant of the Bull Ring in front of the town hall. Just outside the town you’ll find Brading Roman Villa (bradingromanvilla.org.uk), which offers a comprehensive history of the days of Roman occupation on the Island.

CULVER DOWN

Culver Down is accessible by car or foot for picturesque walks or a pub meal at the Culver Haven Inn. There are spectacular views from Culver across Sandown, Shanklin, Whitecliff Bay and Bembridge. There are still some remnants of Culver’s military history with the substantial Bembridge Fort (nationaltrust.org.uk), and a World War II anti-aircraft battery.

Nearby is Adgestone Vineyard (adgestonevineyard.co.uk). Take the self-guided audio tour or a wine tasting lesson before choosing a souvenir bottle from the shop.

FEELING HUNGRY?

The Yarbridge (theyarbridgeinn.co.uk) is a popular pub on the outskirts of Brading with an excellent reputation for good quality food. On Sundays, order a roast platter for four from the Hungry Bear (hungrybear.online) in the high street. The restaurant prides itself on generous portion sizes and freshly produced food. SANDOWN EXPLORE EXPLORE EAST EAST

WHY GO? Sandown is famed for its long stretches of sandy beach and traditional pleasure pier with soft play, amusements and bowling. Hotels, apartments and restaurants line the esplanade which links the town with Lake and Shanklin. Towards the Yaverland end is Sandham Gardens (sandhamgardens.com), with its excellent playground, go karts, bouncing nets and dinosaur themed minigolf course – complete with smoking volcano. Combine the visit with a trip to the pterosaur-shaped museum of Dinosaur Isle (dinosaurisle.com) or meet the lions and tigers of Wildheart Animal Sanctuary (wildheartanimalsanctuary.org).

FEELING HUNGRY?

The sea view draws most diners to Sandown’s seafront, but there are also a handful of stand-out restaurants within the town centre. Bellamy’s Bistro (facebook. com/bellamysbistro) in the High Street has a strong local reputation for offering an unfussy and hearty meal. Cocktails are served a few doors up in the recently opened Cellar Bar (thecellar.bar). Keep walking along the High Street and you’ll find satisfied customers tucking into cake and coffee at Lulu’s Tea Rooms (facebook.com/lulustearooms).

TOP TIP / ONE TO EXPLORE

The Isle of Wight’s surf school (iowsurf.com) has a permanent base on Sandown beach. Sign up for a 90-minute lesson where you’ll be provided with wetsuits and beginner-friendly soft boards. Instructors talk you through the basic techniques before getting you out onto the water.

EXPLORE SOUTH On the Isle of Wight’s southern side, the traditional resort towns meet the more rugged landscapes of the West Wight. At one end you’ll find Shanklin’s long stretch of esplanade and beach. At the other, you can gaze out at the striking St Catherine’s Lighthouse surrounded by nothing but the Island’s outstanding natural beauty.

SHANKLIN

WHY GO? The resort town of Shanklin is split into two distinct areas: the Old Village, with its pretty streets and thatched roofs, and the newer town, from which the road to the esplanade snakes down the hill to the seafront and sandy beaches. The main beach gets busy in the summer, but it quietens down as you walk towards Lake, past Small Hope Beach. Low tide

is the best time to visit if you want to ensure you have plenty of space for building sandcastles.

Quirky Shanklin gift shops include Jurassic Jim’s Fossil Shop (jurassicjim.com), Cavanagh & Baker’s emporium of Island-made gifts (cavanagh-baker.co.uk) and Jingle Bells Christmas Shop (jinglebellschristmasshop.co.uk) where you can treat yourself to a tree decoration on a baking hot day in August. Shanklin Seafront (shanklinseafront.co.uk) is the place for last-minute bucket and spade purchases or a trip to the arcades. Dinosaur fans will enjoy Jurassic Bay minigolf or there’s an indoor course called Caddyshack which provides a good challenge for competitive siblings.

A short walk away is Rylstone Gardens which has a traditional minigolf course and café. Visit on a Sunday afternoon and you might hear a local brass band performing in the park. Rylstone Gardens is by the entrance to one of the Isle of Wight’s oldest, and most understated attractions, Shanklin Chine (shanklinchine.co.uk). The Chine is beautiful at any time of day, but really comes into its own after dark, when its stunning landscapes, waterfalls and plant life are brought to life by magical illuminations. BONCHURCH

The village of Bonchurch has a certain magical air to it thanks to its notable history and weaving landscape.

EXPLORE SOUTH

WHY GO? Its one-time residents include Charles Dickens, and in the late 19th century it was a fashionable spot for writers and artists. At the centre of

Bonchurch is a large spring-fed pond, with a selection of beautiful old cottages and buildings running along the main village road. St Boniface Church is nearby, parts of which date back to the 11th Century. A short walk down from here brings you to Monks Bay, a small sand and shingle beach with rockpools to explore at low tide. The Bonchurch Inn (bonchurch-inn.co.uk) further up the village is a delightful old pub, with a courtyard garden and extensive menu of home-cooked Italian cuisine.

TOP TIP - DEVIL’S CHIMNEY

Just outside Bonchurch is the Devil’s Chimney, one of the Island’s hidden gems. The walk through here is not for the faint-hearted, as it descends into the landslips below down a steep set of stairs in a narrow gap in the rock. The path weaves past small caves into thick woodland, until you reach the main coast path which leads to Bonchurch or Shanklin.

VENTNOR EXPLORE SOUTH EXPLORE EAST

WHY GO? Ventnor’s steep incline and isolated coastal location gives it a feel like nowhere else on the Isle of Wight. A tall hillside looms over the town, giving it shelter and creating a “microclimate” where Mediterranean plants grow in the famous Botanic Gardens (botanic.co.uk).

A free alternative is Ventnor Park (ventnorpark.co.uk) which offers live music in the summer, a putting green and an outdoor gym overlooking the sea. Ventnor’s seafront is a charming spot. Toddlers will enjoy the Isle of Wight-shaped paddling

pool which is backed by the cascade gardens. Grown-ups can enjoy the views and order a breakfast from Besty & Spinky’s Café (facebook.com/BestyandSpinkys).

TOP TIP - TWO FOR THE PRICE OF NONE

Two of the Isle of Wight’s best free days out can be found in the South Wight. The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary (iowdonkeysanctuary.org) has more than 100 donkeys and horses in residence in 55 acres of countryside, with a gift shop and café on site. Just up the road are the remains of Appuldurcombe House (english-heritage.org.uk). The front of the house is a stately home whilst the rear is a ruin which is perfect for hide and seek. 82

| ISLE OF WIGHT GUIDE 2022 EDITION

FEELING HUNGRY?

Ventnor’s vintage clothing stores have been known to draw celebrity shoppers, whilst there is a great collection of independent boutiques to browse, such as bespoke jewellers Honeybourne Jewellery (honeybournejewellery.com). Pop round the corner to try one of the home-made ice creams at The Ventnorian (craveicecream.co.uk).

EXPLORE SOUTH

Ventnor has recently transformed into something of a foodie destination, with several of the Island’s top-rated restaurants on the seafront and main streets. You can enjoy an elegant afternoon tea at The Royal Hotel (royalhoteliow.co.uk), or sample locally caught seafood with views out to sea from the Smoking Lobster (smokinglobster.co.uk). For live music and crashing waves, try the Spyglass Inn (thespyglass.com).

There are two popular coastal walks which start from Ventnor’s Esplanade. To the east is the wheelchair-accessible one-mile walk to Bonchurch. Stop off at The Seapot (facebook. com/seapotcafe) for a bite to eat if the sun is shining. To the west is the more challenging coastal path to Steephill Cove, which is a picture-perfect bay with thatched cottages, deck chairs and ice creams.

Ventnor has become a cultural hotspot on the Island, with events such as Ventnor Fringe (vfringe.co.uk). Expect to see gigs in the launderette, people dressed as seagulls flapping around the town and comedians trying out new material. The festival is curated by Ventnor Exchange (ventnorexchange.co.uk), a theatre, craft beer bar, and record store which is housed in the old Post Office.

ST LAWRENCE & NITON

EXPLORE SOUTH

WHY GO? The Undercliff area around St Lawrence and Niton is where you will find the Island’s most isolated and rugged beaches. A landslip in between the two has made access tricky. However, by following the coast path from Ventnor you will discover the small bays of Woody and Binnel. You may have these beaches all to yourself, even on a summer’s day.

Park up at the nearby Blackgang Viewpoint car park and walk up to St Catherine’s Oratory for spectacular views on a clear day.

REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

On the Niton end, there are several walks which take you around St Catherine’s Lighthouse (another photographer’s favourite). From here you can walk back to Castlehaven and Reeth Bay. EXPLORE WEST

EXPLORE WEST The West Wight’s rolling landscape and crumbling cliffs offer perhaps the Island’s greatest escape. It was largely undeveloped during the 20th century tourism boom and has retained its unspoilt coastline. The beaches of the West Wight often require a little more effort to reach, but you are rewarded with spectacular backdrops.

BRIGHSTONE & SURROUNDING AREA

WHY GO? One of the bigger villages in the west is Brighstone with its 12th century church and traditional farmhouses. The area around North Street has a similar charm to Godshill but without the crowds. Make your way round the tiny Brighstone village museum and library before visiting the thatched newsagents and village shop. Nearby is an excellent tearooms (wolveseyhouse.com) which is a popular stopping point for cyclists. If you have a few minutes spare, pop on a pair of wellies to visit Brighstone’s “Dragon Tree”. This ancient oak can be found on a footpath off New Road and appears to be growing sideways over a stream.

Nearby, you’ll find Mottistone Manor Gardens (nationaltrust.org.uk) where children will enjoy the flowerpot trails and den building area. From here, it’s just a short walk onto the downs to the mysterious “Longstone” monument. The larger of the two stones is nearly four metres tall and is thought to have been erected thousands of years ago.

TOP TIP - ISLE OF WIGHT MOUNTAIN BIKE CENTRE

Whilst it rarely receives much press, the Isle of Wight Mountain Bike Centre (isleofwightmountainbikecentre.com) is often spoken of as one of the best in the UK by mountain bike pros. Set on Cheverton Farm, near Shorwell, they’ve created an ever-expanding trail network to challenge varying abilities of rider, with plans to extend this even further in the future.

FEELING HUNGRY?

Curiously, Hulverstone and Calbourne both have a local pub called The Sun (characterinns.co.uk/the-sun-inn and sun-calbourne.co.uk). Whilst in Calbourne, take a walk past the riverside thatched cottages of Winkle Street. On warm evenings, sit by the trout stream in the beer garden of The Crown at Shorwell (characterinns.co.uk/the-crown-inn). For an afternoon tea with a paint brush, take the whole family for an afternoon at Chessell Pottery Cafe (chessellpotterycafe.co.uk) REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

87

FRESHWATER EXPLORE WEST EXPLORE EAST

WHY GO? The inland half of Freshwater is a busy village with a modest selection of shops and cafés. Freshwater Coffee House (freshwatercoffeehouse.co.uk) is a local favourite for pancakes and pastries. As you head towards Freshwater Bay, take a moment to admire the Island’s only thatched church – St Agnes. Freshwater Bay itself is split into two beaches. The main section consists of a pebble beach, with chalk cliffs and impressive rock stacks at the eastern end. At low tide, head round to the right as you face the sea and you’ll find a secluded bay which is good for paddling and rockpooling. There are caves in the cliffs just past the ends of the beach in either direction, but these are difficult to reach on foot. Before you leave the Bay, buy an ice cream to support the beach shop which raises money for the village’s lifeboat station (freshwaterlifeboat.org.uk).

FEELING HUNGRY?

The Piano Café (thepianocafe.co.uk) sits between the village of Freshwater and the Bay. It gained its name as the former residence of Queen Victoria’s piano tuner. Most visit for lunch, but come back on a summer’s evening for dinner with musical accompaniment. The Red Lion (redlion-freshwater.co.uk) is a traditional pub with a good reputation near to Freshwater’s attractive causeway. Meanwhile, good views and great burgers can be found at The Cow (thecowco.com) which has a modern décor and lively atmosphere.

If you fancy a climb, walk up towards the Tennyson Monument which overlooks Freshwater Bay. From here, you’ll get a distant view of Compton Bay which was named as one of the world’s best beaches by The Sunday Times. For easy access to Compton Bay, park up at Hanover Chine and walk down a dozen steps. To the right is Compton, whilst to the left is Brook Chine, which is dog friendly all year round.

Local surfers tend to park at Compton Farm and navigate the steep steps down to the quieter end of Compton Bay. Take a moment to admire the views from the clifftop if you take this route. The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival took place on farmland around Freshwater. Dimbola Lodge (dimbola.co.uk) hosts an exhibition about the time that more than half a million people descended on the West Wight to watch Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and The Doors.

TOP TIP - A GOLDEN DAY OUT

For a short circular walk in the Freshwater area head for Golden Hill Country Park. In the centre of the park is a hexagonal fort which was built in Victorian times. It is now used for holiday flats and private homes, but you can catch glimpses of its unusual design. Within the grounds you’ll stumble across a giant willow sculpture which resembles a maze. 88

THE NEEDLES

EXPLORE WEST

WHY GO? The Needles is the Isle of Wight’s most famous landmark, made up of a row of striking chalk stacks that rise up from the sea beneath. The red and white striped lighthouse protects seafarers from the rocks. Families can ride the carousel and the chairlift at The Needles Landmark Attraction (theneedles.co.uk). The chairlift leads to Alum Bay with its famous multicoloured cliffs.

The Needles Old Battery (nationaltrust.org.uk) offers the historic side of the headland’s story. Head down the tunnel to the windswept lookout or visit the tearooms for a cream tea with a view which is hard to beat. For a free alternative, visit the New Battery with its unusual past as a rocket testing base.

From the beach, take the Needles Pleasure Cruise (needlespleasurecruises.co.uk) for the perfect “up-close” view of the lighthouse. Thrill-seekers can switch to a high speed boat which will take you right round the lighthouse, to discover a hidden cove on the other side. Finish with a round of minigolf and a sand-filled souvenir back in the amusement park.

YARMOUTH

FEELING HUNGRY?

Yarmouth has several excellent cafés including PO41 Coffee House (facebook.com/PO41CoffeeHouse). Cyclists and dog walkers should stop at Off the Rails (offtherailsyarmouth.co.uk) which is housed in the former railway station. Modern fine dining with a harbourside view is available at The Terrace (theterraceiow.co.uk).

EXPLORE WEST

WHY GO? The historic port town of Yarmouth sits at the entrance of the River Yar and includes some of the oldest architecture on the Island. It is popular for sailing, with a busy harbour located at the mouth of the river estuary. Walk along the pier for great views of the Solent or get a window seat at Gossips Café (facebook.com/thegossipscafe).

Along the coast, Totland Bay has casual beachside eateries with sunset views. Modern seaside dining is offered at the recently opened Bay Café, at the end of Totland Pier (totlandpier.co.uk), whilst The Waterfront (waterfrontiow.com) serves a Mediterranean-inspired menu along with some traditional British classics.

Yarmouth is one of the smallest towns in the country, but it has pretty streets and a modest selection of gift shops, galleries and antique shops. For unusual gifts and souvenirs, try My Funky Bags (myfunkybags.com) whose colourful collections are all crafted from recycled plastic bottles. English Heritage members should take a look at 16th century Yarmouth Castle. What it lacks in size it makes up for in setting and is a great place to sit for a picnic and to enjoy sea views on a warm day.

Just a short drive from Yarmouth, Tapnell Farm (tapnellfarm.com) plays host to a much-loved farm park and restaurant. Older children will enjoy the Total-Wipeout style antics at the Isle of Wight Aqua Park. Younger children can meet animals, ride zip wires and pedal on the go karts at the farm park. In the summer, return in the evening for live music and sunsets. Close up animal encounters are also available at West Wight Alpacas (westwightalpacas. co.uk) in Wellow and Hill Farm Stables (hillfarmstables.com) in nearby Freshwater. Another hidden gem is Fort Victoria (fort-victoria.co.uk) to the west of Yarmouth. In addition to a 1km-long stretch of beach and woodland to explore, you’ll also find attractions including a home for reptiles (reptilarium.org). A short distance along the coast are the popular beaches of Colwell Bay and Totland Bay. Both are best at low tide when the gorgeous sand is exposed.

TOP TIP - SEARCH FOR A PRICELESS SOUVENIR

The rapidly changing cliffs of the West Wight are famed for several significant dinosaur discoveries over the years. Sign up for a reasonably-priced fossil hunting trip from the likes of Dinosaur Expeditions (dinosaurexpeditions.co.uk) and Island Gems (islandgems.co.uk). You’ll spend a couple of hours learning how to spot a fossil and may even discover a one-of-a-kind souvenir. Trips around Brook Chine will show off the dinosaur footprints which are exposed at low tide. REDFUNNEL.CO.UK

FOOD & guide DRINK

In recent years the Isle of Wight’s foodie scene has grown significantly, and it has now become one of its most talked about features for visitors. With its towns and villages remaining largely untouched by big brands and chains, a vibrant scene of independent cafés, restaurants and takeaways has evolved on the Island. This means there is now a wealth of choice in places to eat, with a wide variety of cuisines, all offering their own unique spin on tasty food and warm hospitality. Whether it’s breakfast in a converted railway station, freshly caught crab on chips for lunch, or dinner with a sea view, you’ll find some fantastic food experiences as you journey round the Island. LOCAL PRODUCE

The Isle of Wight’s climate has traditionally made it a fantastic place for growing great produce. Garlic from the legendary Garlic Farm and tomatoes from the Arreton Valley are two of its best-known exports, and in more recent years those have been followed by a range of other amazing local producers. Mermaid Gin from Isle of Wight Distillery can be found on the shelves of many of the top bars in the UK, whilst the Isle of Wight Cheese Company regularly picks up global awards for its cheese varieties. The distinctive angled bottles and flavoured vodka from Tipsy Wight were recently featured on TV, and there are many more Island producers who are working their way onto menus and into shops around the rest of the UK. If you’re looking to pick up some local treats to cook on your holidays or take home as gifts, there are plenty of Island farm shops and retailers to help you stock up.

TOP PICNIC SPOTS

The biggest problem you’ll have choosing your picnic site on the Isle of Wight is deciding which of the countless beauty spots is best for you! Here are just five of the really (really) good ones.

FORT VICTORIA (YARMOUTH) An extensive coastal country park, next to a former military fort, with large grassy area and benches perfect for picnicking overlooking the Solent.

BRIGHSTONE FOREST (BRIGHSTONE) The Island’s largest forest, ideal shelter from wind and rain, a pre/post walk to burn off those picnic calories.

TENNYSON DOWN (FRESHWATER) Iconic backdrops, chalk cliffs, sea views, coastal flowers, bird watching, and watersports people-watching. Named after former resident Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

STEEPHILL COVE (VENTNOR) A picturesque cove with natural seashore activities for kids to stay entertained. Tip: grab a fresh crab pasty from the Crab Shed. Careful: there’s no road down to the cove – just steep steps.

BRADING DOWN (BRADING) Fantastic views of the bay and wide-open green spaces leading down to a nature reserve. This spot is widely considered a local favourite, and there’s usually an ice cream van parked up during the main season.

BEACH BBQS: A great way to enjoy the Island on warmer evenings is with a BBQ on the beach. Choose your beach carefully, as the Council doesn’t permit BBQs on most of its managed beaches.

SAIL BACK IN TIME...

Travelling with Red Funnel is more than just a way of getting to the Island – you’re setting sail on a historic route with an iconic brand seeped in history – 160 years of history to be exact! The Southampton Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Company Limited (better known as Red Funnel) was formed in 1861. In the same year Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert died, the American Civil War broke out, and Thomas Cook ran the first package holiday. We’re the original operator to the Isle of Wight and have a distinguished and colourful history that has spanned over 160 years. In the early days of Red Funnel, we operated excursions to a variety of destinations on the Isle of Wight and along the south coast, with our impressive fleet of paddle steamers.

122

| ISLE OF WIGHT GUIDE 2022 EDITION

As changing habits and technologies (the invention of the car) brought an increased demand for holidays and travel, our fleet had to adapt to the needs of our customers with purpose-built vehicle ferries, hi-speed hydrofoils and catamarans, and most recently a dedicated freight ferry. Our first car ferries were very different to the “roll on roll off” style we sail today; all the traffic was loaded and unloaded from one end, and there was a turntable on the car deck to turn vehicles around!

We also operated a tug service out of Southampton, who were involved in towing the SS Titanic when she left the docks on her fateful maiden voyage! In the early 20th century, several of our vessels were called to support the Armed Forces in World War I & II, assisting in various campaigns including the evacuation at Dunkirk.

DOG FRIENDLY guide An Isle of Wight dog-cation is not complete without woodland walks, runs on the beach and plenty of dog-friendly ice cream on the menu. Great news! The Island has it all – you and your pooch can even take a ride on a steam train too! With all this dog-friendly ‘stuff’ on offer the Island really is a haven for dogs and their humans!

GETTING HERE

You know your beloved pooch is in for a good holiday when you board the Red Funnel ferry to find a dedicated pet lounge or outside deck to explore in the warmer months – no staying in the car for our four-legged friends. Dogs don’t need a ferry ticket, and there’s no charge for them to travel, so bringing them to the Island is hassle-free.

BEACHES

The Isle of Wight is surrounded by beautiful beaches that are perfect for dogs to jump over the waves, go for a swim, or scamper along the shore. There are various year round dog-friendly beaches to enjoy with no restrictions, and many of the more popular tourist beaches allow dogs in the winter.

EATING OUT

There are plenty of options when it comes to dining out with your dog. Many pubs and restaurants on the Island welcome dogs (and their owners) with open arms, with some even offering their own interpretations of a doggy menu.

WALKS Dog walks on the Island give you an opportunity to explore breath-taking countryside, coastal paths and woodland trails. For easy exploring, we highly recommend the series of flat walks that follow the former Island railway lines, with one of the highlights running from Yarmouth to Freshwater. Start at the main Yarmouth car park off River Road and follow the path south along the shoreline of the estuary, past the old mill. From here you’ll join the former railway track, for a relaxed countryside stroll through to Freshwater, with river views almost all the way.

DAYS OUT Being able to take your dog with you on a day out is a big deal, and you’ve got a load of options on the Island. Some attractions allow pups to roam around all areas, and you can even visit some of the Island’s best known spots, with just a few restrictions.

They do this by: • Informing, assisting and promoting businesses, organisations, individuals and local government initiatives to welcome everyone to our beautiful Island. • Providing some accessible services, such as adapted cycling. • Contributing to the improved health and well-being of the people they support, as well as people who work or volunteer for them. YOUNG LIVES VS CANCER Every year Red Funnel customers and staff select a new charity to focus our fundraising efforts on – this year we’re delighted to be working with the fantastic Young Lives vs Cancer

WHO DOES THE CHARITY HELP?

Every day in the UK 12 families are told the devastating news that their child has cancer. Young Lives vs Cancer supports children and young people aged 0-24 years and their families to face whatever cancer throws at them. Their teams have supported over 200 families from the Isle of Wight and Hampshire in the past year.

DEDICATED SOCIAL CARE

For families facing childhood cancer on the Isle of Wight the nearest specialist hospital is Southampton General Hospital, where Young Lives vs Cancer social workers are based. They provide specialist and bespoke support for the young person and their family which is practical, emotional and financial. This could be helping with a financial grant for a parent struggling to keep their child warm through treatment or for a young person who can’t afford to get to hospital. The staff help with a wide range of concerns families face from housing, anxiety, liaising with schools or workplaces to also providing bereavement support.

WHY DO THEY NEED OUR HELP?

In a normal year, children, young people and parents facing cancer experience isolation, fear, money worries. The huge impact of the pandemic only added to this. Young Lives vs Cancer is needed more than ever, and as a charity funded 100% by voluntary donations they can only continue their vital work thanks to the kindness of others. To find out more about the charity, and how you can donate, go to: redfunnel.co.uk/coty

JEAN’S HOUSE – “HOME FROM HOME”

Jean’s House is a 7-bedroom home offering free accommodation for families to stay close to Southampton General Hospital. Families are welcome to stay free of charge for as long as they need to. It’s so important that families can be close together. It also helps families financially as the charity’s research shows that on average a family needs to find an extra £600 a month whilst their child receives treatment. 128

They offer a variety of ticket types including group and period fares. There are two major bus stations on the Island - in Newport and Ryde. The Newport bus station is the bigger of the two and has a built-in tourist information centre. Paying for the bus is easy; the buses accept cash and contactless payments via card or mobile phone. For some of the best views on the Island, check out the open top buses on the Needles & Downs Breezer tours. islandbuses.info

CARS: Most of the Island is made up of narrow country roads (all accompanied by amazing views!) so for safety and enjoyment, take it easy when driving them. While not prohibitive, the narrow roads are a challenge for larger vehicles, so it is highly advisable to plan your arrival and departure from the Island during daylight hours if you’re bringing a motorhome or towing a caravan. You may also encounter horse riders and cyclists on Island roads.

TRAINS: The Island’s main train line operates between Ryde and Shanklin. The train stops at: Ryde Pier head, Ryde Esplanade (where the bus station is), Ryde St John’s Road, Smallbrook Junction (connecting with Isle of Wight Steam Railway), Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin. Tickets for the Island Line can be purchased online or via ticket machines at the stations. For times and more information see southwesternrailway.com/IslandLine 130

TAXIS: The Island has several taxi services available, which tend to operate locally around the bigger towns and areas. There’s no Uber network on the Island at the time of writing, but there is a recently launched app called Go Taxi which looks to offer a similar service. It’s crucial to book taxis in advance on the Island, as they get very busy, especially when demand increases at peak visitor season. The Island also has several water taxi terminals – with popular departures from Cowes, Bembridge and Yarmouth.

ELECTRIC TRAVEL: There are lots of places to hire bicycles, including e-bikes, through providers such as wightcyclehire.co.uk. You’ll also find e-scooters available to hire in some of the main towns, which are available through the Beryl app. Driving an electric vehicle? You’ll find several charging points around the Island - for charge point locations, visit iow.gov.uk
