Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We have 15 people working at New West. We have 10 people in Nashville and 5 folks in Athens, GA working directly for New West. We have more employees working for the sub labels as well. We are an all in-house label. We have a production department, PR department, Radio Department, Marketing Department, A digital team and a sales team along with our A&R folks. We have people devoted to our publishing wing as well. A lot of us wear multiple hats which is just part of getting the job done and hope fully it helps us all learn about better ways to work within the music business. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pan demic? Communication. While we were all at home during the pandemic we learned how to work together even while working from home. But naturally, you lose water cooler camaraderie and ideas tend to evolve at a slower pace. Now that we are back in the office I feel like we are marketing and promoting our records with more creativity based on conversations that evolve in real time between all employees.

This Issue: Tommy Robinson, Vice President of Sales at New West Records
When and where did the label begin? New West began in 1998. It started in Minneapolis and then moved to Los Angeles and Austin, TX. Multiple folks working in multiple cities to put out the first releases. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? I am not sure about this one. No one seems to know. I am guessing it has something to do with the label being started in LA and that it was a new style of country and western music. I am really not sure though.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Pre-orders. I don’t remember the Pre-order being such a thing and now they are a massive part of selling a record and how many sales you actually get. That and stream ing. It’s been amazing to see how people have adapted to listening to everything on their phone or computer and building a digital library and really actively discovering music. Streaming has become such a discovery tool for the average fan who may or may not have time to really seek out new music. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? SNTRK. It would be all instrumental music. Psych, jazz, guitar, beats etc…anything that could be a good soundtrack/score to a movie or performance. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: I have a few favorite stores here in Nashville. I love working with them and they are always super kind to me. They order records for me, hold them for me and help me find new music (mentioned above). They know who they are. But if I am shouting out places that I could get lost in…Academy Records in Brooklyn and Double Decker in PA come to mind. Human Head in NYC is also great. I love record stores stacked with hard to find titles as well as obscure tastes and genres. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? I would like New West to be remembered as a label that cared and put out great music while at the same time advancing artist and employee careers. A real music company devoted to promoting art with integrity.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? I can’t really speak to what the ambitions were when the label was started but I do know that this label was founded upon the idea that there are a lot of great indepen dent artists out there and their music was and is something to be heard and celebrated. I feel like that is still the goal today. We want to promote independent artists and their music with integrity so that we can help their careers flourish while allowing our staff and the artists and their team to live productive and healthy lives. We work in music. It’s fun and creative and it’s a massive pleasure to be able to have our hand in expand ing or developing an artist’s vision and art. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
Me, personally, I love the Benji Hughes - A Love Extreme record. Top to bottom it’s just a perfect record. It’s a double album with 20+ songs but so many of them are just ear worms and classics that are still a pleasure to listen to every time they come on. I also thoroughly enjoyed working on The Glands and Pylon reissue campaigns. The teams, artists and marketing ideas came together very nicely. Those projects were a complete pleasure. I love the music too. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Haha, I don’t know if it’s very “wild” but we released Caroline Rose’s Superstar record back in 2020. In 2019 as we were leading up to the release we purchased a billboard in Vega, TX and it confused the entire town quite a bit. Just a photo of Caroline with the weird mask she is wearing on the cover. We did it as a joke to tell Caroline we bought a billboard in Vegas but instead we messed up and bought it in Vega. All intentional. She was awesome to work with and totally played it up. We might have to do it again since she has so many fans in Vega, TX now. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I don’t mind it at all. I know people love it and our customers seem to dig it. I know a lot of people don’t love it and say it affects the sound quality. Go buy a CD then. Those sound the best. We did a few variants for the Texas Gentlemen - Floor It record. The inner panels of the gatefold were a “candyland-esque” board game that involved some imbibing of substances. We tried to mimic the colors of the game and did a lot of cool pressings. We did one pressing that was 3-4 colors blocked on each side of the record. It looked like Simon, the old 80s hand-held game. That was a fun campaign. Those dudes are awesome and have such a creative vision.
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? We never stopped or slowed down on CDs. We still sell a lot of CDs so we keep them in stock for every release and we sell them. Now, with the vinyl boom we have had to get creative and get more copies signed or even do indie-only CDs that have extra tracks and are exclusive to indie retailers. Cassettes, we’ve done a few and we have a few more on the horizon. We don’t sell a lot of cassettes. They seem to be more of a novelty item than anything else…for us at least. How would you describe the average fan of the label? Hmmm, it really depends on the release but I would say most of our fans are male, be tween 30-60 years of age and they mostly like Americana/Country music. That being said, I don’t wanna pigeon hold those fans. I think they like music in general and with us, it likely starts from being a fan of one of our heritage artists.
How did you personally get started in the music industry? I moved to Austin, TX on a whim in late 2006 to work with KLRU / Austin City Limits. I worked as an assistant to the producers of the show and helped with all the grunt work associated with putting the performances together.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? Personally, I like to shop in record stores in order to find new music. I find so many bands just by getting staff recommendations, hearing music overhead, looking at marketing stickers. I also get a lot of new music recommendations from Spotify and Discover Weekly. The music may not always be new but sometimes it’s new to me. I also search for new music via labels and their newsletters/socials. I am a big fan of everything that International Anthem (a fellow Redeye label) releases so I pretty much listen to and/or buy anything that they are releasing. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? I would say the Americana / Singer-Songwriter genre is our bread and butter but we have a very diverse roster spread across over 500+ releases.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Not really. We started in LA and Austin and eventually moved to Athens, GA and Nashville, TN. Being in the South seems to represent the country genre a bit more than other places but as I mentioned above, we represent all sorts of genres so I don’t think where we are influences a ton of what we do. We’ve just usually been connected to a thriving local scene and that certainly helps us when promoting and marketing music.
How has the label changed since it started? It has evolved into a full service record label for artists and bands of multiple genres. New West began as an Americana / Alt Country label but has evolved to include Rock, Dance, Punk, Metal, Soul, Funk, Blues etc…

Not to downplay her nod to disorientation induced by double catastrophe — global pandemic plus climate emergency’s colliding eco-traumas resonate all too eerily. “What would be your last gesture?” she asks. Bassist Nick Harmer calls the experience of writing this way incredibly inspiring. “Having exactly one day to work on each track allowed me to not overthink things,” he says. “I had to come up with something compelling and get it completed or the whole process would break “Idown.”believe everybody started finding ideas and performances that might not have happened if we’d been in the same room writing,” adds drummer Jason McGerr
So it was that after nearly 25 years as a band, this unconventional recording process managed to push the veteran rockers in entirely new and unexpected directions creatively. And ironically, the isolated circumstances in which it began led to the creation of Death Cab for Cutie’s most collaborative album to date. Cutie
The unorthodox sessions led to one of Death Cab’s most diverse sounding albums to date. “Roman Candles,” the first single, was partially inspired by a drum part from the ‘70s Krautrock act Faust. “Wheat Like Waves”, which Gibbard wrote after spending time with Torquil Campbell of Stars while listening to Prefab Sprout, is an ode to an adult male friendship that has spanned years. “Rand McNally” is a poignant track about building a legacy. “This is my life’s work,” Gibbard says. “When members leave bands, they’re often seminal members. That fans continue to support them is a testament to how important the music is to them. I wanted to write something to and for everyone who has been in this band, who helped make it what it is, to say I'm not going to let the light fade.”

When the writing of Asphalt Meadows began in the early part of the pandemic, Death Cab for Cutie wasn’t sure how to make a record. The band lived in four different cities and being in the studio together wasn’t an option. Though singer/songwriter Ben Gibbard started writing songs at the end of their last tour, he felt like he was hitting a wall after being trapped in his home studio for months. So he hatched a plan to shake things up.

“A work week is Monday through Friday and there are five members of the band,” Gibbard explains. “So on Monday, someone put together a piece of music and shared it. And then the next person took it, with the order decided randomly. On your day, you had complete editorial Atcontrol.”theend of each week, they finished a rough song mix. Sometimes, songs were transformed entirely, with a key change or altogether different tempo. “After we started, we had a lot of success,” Gibbard says. While not all of the songs on Asphalt Meadows came from these sessions, over half of them did. The songs collected here are autobiographical, but they’re also character sketches of relationships -- platonic, familial, romantic -- and more importantly, their aftermaths. The shapes and ghosts left in absences. The question that hangs in the air: what do you do with how intimately versed you’ve become in a person, once they’re gone from your life?
The third LP from the New Zealand quartet houses 12 jewels of tight, guitar-heavy songs that worm their way into your head, an incandescent collision of power-pop and skuzz. With Expert, The Beths wanted to make an album meant to be experienced live, for both the listeners and themselves. They wanted it to be fun in spite of the prickling anxiety throughout the lyrics, the fear of change and struggle to cope. Most of Expert was recorded at guitarist Jonathan Pearce’s studio on Karangahape Road in Tamaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) toward the end of 2021, until they were interrupted by a four-month national lockdown. They traded notes remotely for months, songwriting from afar and fleshing out the arrangements alone. The following February The Beths left the country to tour across the US, and simultaneously finish mixing the album on the road, culminating in a chaotic three-day studio mad-dash in Los Angeles. There, Expert finally became the record they were hearing in their heads.

Themes of recalibration and finding personal space are equally mirrored in Earth Trip’s lean produc tion. Recorded at his home studio in Portland and mixed by Cooper Crain (Bitchin’ Bajas, Cave), Johnson makes deft use of space while experimenting with new sonics. Shimmering pedal steel, woozy harmonica melodies, and stately piano enhance the album’s introspective tone without ever clouding arrangements. Psychedelic elements that nod to Johnson’s other projects and influences still appear throughout, but hover at the edge of perception, a subtle halo adding colour and texture to Johnson’s songwriting rather than taking centrer-stage. He elaborates: “I told Cooper I was trying to capture that feeling when you take psychedelics and they just start coming on - maybe objects start buzzing in the edges of your vision, you start seeing slight trails, maybe the characteristics of sound change subtly. But you’re not fully tripping yet. He got the idea right away and his mix really captures that feeling.” Johnson’s lithe guitar playing throughout treads a fine line between country and cosmic, taut melodies spiralling out into long reverb trails or free-form solos buoyed by a breeze, radiating summer warmth. Through its daring honesty and masteful arrangements, Earth Trip cements Johnson’s place as a singular songwriter of inimitable skill. It’s message of mindfulness and our interconnectedness to the environment expands on a long country and blues music tradition that draws a symbiotic relationship between storyteller and the land, capturing the beauty of the natural world while also emphasising our responsibility in preserving it for future generations.
Earth Trip was written during a period of sudden shocks and drastic lifestyle changes for Johnson. Forced to cancel extensive touring plans for 2020, the guitarist found himself home for an extended period for the first time in years. No longer in constant motion, he was able to experience and enjoy the simple pleasures of home life, of being in one place: hikes in nature, bathing outside, and waking with the dawn. Forming new connections to his surroundings, from tending to a garden to sleeping out under the stars, Johnson found hope and healing in a more mindful relationship with the natural world.

The Body and BIG|BRAVE are both bands possessed with an unequaled ability to convey overwhelming weight with simplicity, repetition, and detailed sonic atmospheres; artists who continue to alter the definition of what it means to be a heavy band. The Body are consistently prolific while increasingly ambitious as untethered producers and collaborators. BIG|BRAVE shape sound with dense waves of guitar and feedback, minimalist and hypnotic crashes, and emotionally exacting vocal melodies. In collaboration, The Body and BIG|BRAVE shift the gravity of their compositions to woven layers of percussion and unspooling guitars that sprawl through stark frameworks of earthy folk. Their debut collaborative album Leaving None But Small Birds distills the two ensembles’ pioneering approach to heavy music into psalms for the forgotten, threnodies of lost love, and odes to vengeance.
Typical to The Body’s creative process, Leaving None But Small Birds was composed almost entirely in the studio at Machine With Magnets with engineer/producer Seth Manchester. The Body and BIG|BRAVE aimed to challenge themselves to craft a fully realized and cohesive work that strayed outside the boundaries of the music they make individually. The Body’s Lee Buford set up the initial challenge: collaborating to make an album that evoked the country and folk roots of The Band.

BIG|BRAVE’s Robin Wattie compiled lyrics and melodic lines from across Appalachian, Canadian, and English hymns and folk songs. Select phrases were then reworked and precisely arranged to center the experiences of marginalized characters, victims of hardship, and those yearning for love within each story. The despair and empowerment of these traditional tunes draw remarkable parallels with each group’s focus on championing people often cast aside in history. The Body and BIG|BRAVE, following a folk tradition, make each song their own through shifts in perspective and a synthesis of passages from kindred tales. BIG|BRAVE’s roots as a minimalist folk band and The Body’s love of old-time, country blues, and folk music enable the quintet to strike a formidable balance between sorrowful lamentation and uplifting resolve to weighty effect. Order of Romance is perhaps ultimately an exploration of the endless balance act of being a ‘Human Being’, an approach and examination of some of the biggest theme and issues of our time through the doorway of the personal, a way finding meaning and some kind of faith in a world where so much is disconnected and discordant. As she states “I seek out reflection and resolve in my songs. I find out who I am in a sense. For a few minutes, I can exist in nature at my full potential, saying just what I mean, in balance, in awe, in wonder and in full force. As a moral agent, a mode I can’t seem to avoid, my writing is time taken to observe and ask questions. I find humour in our predicament. I find danger in the reckoning. I find faith despite our sorry state and I feel connection when I draw it through my voice. I stand my ground and through the music and point inevitably towards compassion”.
JESCA HOOP ORDER OF ROMANCE September 2022 LABEL: Memphis Industries Jesca Hoop returns with her sixth album, Order of Romance, a record that fortifies her position as one of the most striking and original voices in contemporary music. Order of Romance is Hoop's most intricate and finely balanced album to date, one that draws on classic song writing, recalling anything from Gershwin to Paul Simon, but creating something that is unmistakably, indelibly Jesca Hoop. It is a deep dive into craft. As Jesca says “I set out to mature as a writer, to further clarity my voice and stance, through melodies and phrases only I can construct. Order of Romance feels like every person, character, or artist, I ever was over the many seasons of my life was handed an instrument to play across the songs.” In the summer of 2021, Hoop once again ventured south from her adopted home of Manchester to Bristol to team up with producer John Parish (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding), her collaborator for 2019’s Stonechild. This time additional assistance came from in Jess Vernon (This is the Kit) to arrange for a four piece horn and woodwind quintet. Legendary drummer Seb Rochford lent his skills, John Thorne plays the bass and Chloe Foy and Rachel Rimmer were enlisted to deliver Hoop’s signature vocal arrangements. The result is a fruitful marriage of song craft and arrangement, brimming with a cinematic charm and lyrical wit that signify a new chapter full of new life for an artist who knows her mind, her heart and voice well enough to trust them in uncharted territory.
Order of Romance then is a complete work that demands close attention, an active listen, a filagree that’s apparent lightness of touch belies a serious intent. Themes of empathy and friendship, intertwine with a clear eyed and moralistic poetry on subjects such as gun control, religious and political cults, and climate change.

With new album Til It’s Gone, Ali McGuirk delivers a sublime set of songs that pairs her trademark soul sound with rootsy turns and raw rock ‘n’ roll detours. McGuirk coproduced Til It’s Gone with Jonah Tolchin (a star singer-songwriter in his own right) and a set of session legends: Little Feat guitarist/ mandolinist Fred Tackett, organist Larry Goldings (James Taylor, Norah Jones), singer Valerie Pinkston (Ray Charles, Luther Vandross), percussionist Lenny Castro (Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder). They provided the astounding chops, but the true magic of the album comes from McGuirk’s singular voice as both singer and songwriter.
The nine tracks run from intimate introspection to wider meditations on oppression and justice, from tough r&b and tender soul to big rock guitar and twangy folk. Each song succeeds because McGuirk has composed a dynamic, hypnotic frame for her vocals.

Side one ricochets expertly back and forth between magisterial instrumentals and sing-song forms cut up on the mixing desk, as with the undeniable hitness of “Plastic (You Want It)”, winningly rewired to MIDI-mangled beat squelches. They don’t really land on a straight up punk-style riff until it’s almost time to flip the side, and even once they’ve got off on a run of rockers on side B, their aesthetic choices continuously reframe the norms, enhancing their inherent power. People Helping People finds their disparate desires operating in perfect sync; prolegomenic weirdness fused immaculately to clas sic rock propulsion, transforming the energy pouring out from their hands and feet with electronics.
Dean’s lyrics are like pieces taken off the belt at the factory and put together into a John Chamberlin-esque sculpture, meant to sit out in the rain. Randy ’s guitars, collaged into arrangements that reflect, again, boundless curiosity and exquisite restraint. This is People Helping People: unpretentious, suspicious, inviting, confident, left field. The most accurate display of the No Age ethos put to record. Yet!
First thought, best thought. Until the next thought: a guiding prin ciple for No Age in the 16ish years they’ve been around. Constantly responding to their own streams of consciousness with reductive flexibility, they’ve taken the basic duo of guitar and drums with vocals WAY farther than anyone listening in halcyon Weirdo Rippers days could have guessed. Expounding on those larval possibilities, they’ve zig-zagged in serpentine precision, in and out of the teeth of the wringer — ranging outside and back in again, as befits the present thought. When the first song with singing (“Compact Flashes”) bounces in on an insane synthetic beat, the only recognizable sound of No Age is a sputtering of enchanted clicks and creaks — muted guitar strings and drumkit rattlings that cycle for a full minute before voice song and snare fall into place. A Guide to the Birdsong of Western Africa is an album of music inspired by endangered birdsong. This unique project brings together a mix of legendary West African musicians such as Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and the iconic Sierra Leone’s Refugee Allstars alongside some of the rising stars from the region’s thriving electronica scene including Afro-House producer Buruntuma from Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria’s Sensei Lo. Each artist was challenged to make an original track using and inspired by the song of an endangered bird from their country. The album aims to raise awareness about the plight of these birds and also raise funds for those working to protect them with all the proceeds being donated to conservation organisations working to save these species and their habitats. This is the third album from The Birdsong Project, following on from A Guide to the Birdsong of South America, was released in Shika Shika is a label for music without borders. The label was founded in 2015 between Berlin, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Paris to give a platform to emerging artsts from around the world, focussing on artists exploring global folk roots, organic sounds and electronica. Michael le Riche was so worried back in the day that FAKE PALMS’ eponymous 2015 debut album wouldn’t adequately convey the antisocial musical tendencies he harboured in his head that he put the thing through such a scorching post production acid bath that even friends and committed fans were immediately coming back to him with worries that the LPs they’d purchased were “broken ”
Just the third proper release from a one man band that le Riche routinely manifests in the flesh onstage in Toronto as a sort of amorphous, all star underground Toronto noise pop “supergroup,” this is an album that fully derives its antisocial scorch through the increased clarity and precision of the Fake Palms vision Lemons is slippery, spiky, not a little psych y and more than a little lyrically sour, not to mention frequently, subtly tricked out from a minimalist, nerdo instrumental perspective that doesn’t demand that you dork out over the arrangements but will always leave the option open if and when you decide to do so

More than anything, though, Lemons is the record where Le Riche who also plays in the steamy synth-pop outfit Sauna and formerly of art rock troupe the Darcys fully exposes his talents as a bona fide popsmith This thing’s got sticky tunes to burn The arch jangle of “Visions” evokes Lee Ranaldo linking up with the bubblegum savvy early Wire, for instance, while “Satellite” surfs spectacularly along sometime Dilly Dally drummer Benjamin Reinhartz’s pummelling rhythm track to a tingly, soaring chorus that’s impossible to shake after first exposure and the similarly haunting “Civil Liberties” manages the trick of sounding wistful and dystopian at the same time You’ll be hooked soon enough, in any case Lemons conjured with help throughout from Reinhartz and producer / mixer / engineer Josh Korody throughout and also featuring Ducks Ltd.’s Evan Lewis on guitars and such guests as Twist’s Laura Hermiston, Burning Love’s Patrick Marshall is destined to take over discerning turntables and playlists for months to come Fake Palms have arrived.

The group were the one of the first too to intentionally set out to break down musical barriers Brian himself specifically stated in the sleeve notes for 1968s ‘Definitely What!’ album that his concept “lies along a straight line drawn between pop and jazz and aims at the ‘fusion’ of both elements”. ‘Fusion’ at that time was not even a recognised musical term, reinforcing Auger’s credentials as an originator and innovator.

“People come and people go away / Yeah, but God with me he stayed” sings Alex Giannascoli, the 29-year-old, Philadelphia-based musician best known as Alex G on his new album, God Save the Animals. “God” figures in the LP’s title, its first song, and multiple of its thirteen tracks thereafter, not as a concrete religious entity but as a sign for a generalized sense of faith (in something, anything) that fortifies Giannascoli, or the characters he voices, amid the songs’ often fraught situations. Giannascoli has been drawn in recent years to musicians like Gillian Welch and writers like Joy Williams, artists who balance the public and hermetic and who present faith more as a shared social language than religious doctrine. Filtering his experiences through fact and fiction, Giannascoli also distances himself from the songs through a more practical method: collaboration. God Save the Animals features several individual contributions from his bandmates (guitarist Samuel Acchione, drummer Tom Kelly, and bassist John Heywood) or frequent collaborator Molly Germer on strings and/or vocals. As with records since his adolescence, Giannascoli wrote and demoed the songs of God Save the Animals by himself, at home; but, for the sake of both new tones and “a routine that was outside of my apartment” during the pandemic, he began visiting multiple studios in greater Philadelphia. God Save the Animals consequently features the work of some half-dozen engineers whom Giannascoli asked to help him produce the “best” recording quality, whatever that meant. The result is an album more dynamic than ever in its sonic palette and its thoroughgoing complexity.

The record opens with Backup Plan… because I think being absolutely and freely myself was always stupidly my back up plan. If I couldn’t succeed at being the person I was pretending to be, if I couldn’t want the things I’d been pretending to want, only then would I give myself permission to just be me. Then came Thérèse and Mermaid BarThérèse is about a misunderstood girl trapped in a painting and Mermaid Bar is about a girl who tries to end her life by jumping into the Hudson River and instead becomes a mermaid. Bloomed Into Blue was originally a poem I had written with a friend in high school called the B-Word Muse. It was a tribute to Ariel, to Eddie Sedgwick, Marie Thérèse, and so many more…Women who were always the subject of art and not the creator. Worthy of being spoken about but not worthy of being listened to. This record reckons with childhood in Sweet Tooth and Driver, with regret in Luna Moth, Crazy Kid and Sticky Little Words, with anger in South Elroy, Restless Moon and Over.

In the Fall of 1993, between contracts with Capitol and RCA, The Smithereens ventured into Crystal Sound Studios NYC to write and record a new album for their own label. De Lux Do You Need A Release?
Do You Need A Release? Is De Lux at their poppiest, their prettiest, danciest, but also their most abrasive. The record is built on an uncomfortable bed of tension which when released is immediately satisfying in unpredictable and surprising ways. The verses often pummel you with aggressive beats and grooves only to blossom into open, encouraging, and even angelic refrains. Or the other way around, like in “New Summers”, where the choruses don’t resolve and the drums are a never ending build up that disorients you—reminding you that summer will never be the same again. Similarly on the title track, a relentless glitch of a guitar chord repeats over a drum beat that sounds like it’s trying to break into your house. The band finally breaks the tension with a simple mantra: “Open, open you’re ready now.” These ebbs and flows are embedded in their new approach to songwriting which owes itself to another new variable: a Yamaha P2 upright piano made of walnut. De Lux’s sound has been built on iconic synths such as the Juno and Dx 7 and while those instruments are still trademarks of their identity, Sean wanted a place to sit without plugging in to write songs he could construct more organically. Playing the piano allowed him to create more emotive performances, playing with the give and take of the piano keys which lead to the new album’s organized mess of often beautiful but dissonant song structures. On the album’s opener, “They Call This Love”, it sounds like the band is announcing a special bulletin report for the upcoming apocalypse. Arpeggiated synths weave through beautiful vocal harmonies behind Sean’s urgent warning to beware of controlling lovers and then drops into an almost EDM like jam only to end with a gentle piano chord progression. Sean says that the record is filled with questions and not answers, but each riddle is its own answer as pseudo philosophical as that can sound… His lyrics are at once filled with uncertainty and affirmation. The irony is that the grooves are as solid as they’ve ever been and the band is pushing themselves harder than they ever have. Striving to make something danceable and beautiful and important. The piano also reveals Sean at his most vulnerable: there are two shockingly pretty ballady tunes on the LP that feature Sean’s unique style of piano playing and his strange sense of melody and bizarre lyrical subject matter. “Morning Misses Me” is a song as seemingly silly as waking up too late, but it puts goose pimples on your goose pimples, making your eyes wet with its honesty and clarity. It’s a track about trying your hardest to be someone different, but ultimately deciding to accept who you are and always have been. It ends with a question mark of a chord just like the title of the album.
On De Lux’s first two albums the duo tackled the innocence of youth and generational anxiety. More Disco Songs About Love flipped the switch to create an ambitious party record not about youthful musings and insecurity, but reflection and gratitude for the things and people they love. This go-around Sean and Isaac are still funny and profound and their sound remains easy to groove to, but the band is more influenced by the fun 80’s new wave of the Tom Tom Club and the experimentation and imagery of The Clash’s “Sandinista!” than cerebral DFA era disco.
After writing, performing, recording, and producing three albums themselves, De Lux have traded their typically hermetic recording process at their Burbank studio for a more collaborative experience. The result is their most dynamic record yet, titled Do You Need A Release? Founding members Sean Guerin and Isaac Franco invited their live band to record to tape at Jonny Bell’s Jazzcat Studio in Long Beach, CA. While De Lux has always been able to write immediately danceable and quirky pop songs with a strong dose of wit, these recordings get the sonic boost they deserve to match the quality and camaraderie of their intense and acclaimed live performances.

The album title was lifted by the well-traveled McCombs from one of the visas packed into his current passport, the stamp a reminder of how far his music has taken him – literally all over the world. Not since McCombs’ solo outlet Brokeback blossomed into a full-fledged rock unit has his singular approach to solo guitar playing been exhibited in such striking detail. Taking after Brokeback’s classic Morse Code in the Modern Age : Across the Americas, “Two To Coolness” is a piece that McCombs refined through a series of improvised performances and features Calexico drummer John Convertino, as well as singer/guitarist/synth player Sam Prekop (also of The Sea and Cake). “Green Crown’s Step” was largely improvised working through melodies and patterns. The stately “Two Who Falls Shadows” reshapes three key themes that Tortoise and Brokeback fans will find to be signature McCombs, buoyed by fellow Brokeback member Jim Elkington (Tweedy), who also engineered and mixed the album. On the album, McCombs plays with spare instrumentation and primarily plays electric and acoustic guitars as well as the Bass VI, drawing out textures that stretch the scope of his instruments. McCombs’ work is pastoral and expansive, his playing is refined and nuanced, and his melodies often bely his admiration for Morricone as his guitar imbues endlessly sprawling fields of the midwest with the same sense of magic. Paco Cathcart’s fourth NNA bounces from track to track with a polished exuberance as Cathcart delivers some of their catchiest to date. Russell and Gary Wilson Of all the celebrated home recording artists that haunt the pages of Bandcamp and the basements of the DIY touring circuit, few have had an output as eclectic, enigmatic, and consistent as The Cradle’s Paco Cathcart. With content ranging from poetry over sound collage experiments to lush acoustic ballads to beat-driven noise, Cathcart has 40+ releases on Bandcamp, not including the limited edition tour tapes that never made it online. Through this extraordinarily diverse discography and their extensive self-funded touring, they have cultivated a loyal cult following across fans of many genres. Their latest effort, Radio Wars, exists at an intersec tion of many of Cathcart’s musical approaches, while also being perhaps their most accessible LP so far. In a departure from The Cradle’s more lo-fi works, Radio Wars bounces from track to track with a polished exuberance as Cath cart delivers some of their catchiest music to date. Pumping with auto-tuned nursery rhyme hooks and densely-programmed drum machine beats, the album boasts a sonic palette that owes as much to the production of DJ Rashad and the erratic vocal ap proach of Playboi Carti as it does to Cathcart’s more familiar Dub and Gamelan influences. It’s a musical world that draws you in quickly and leaves you deeply immersed throughout its 15 - track running time. As with previous releases, Cathcart’s lyrics celebrate and reflect on the profundity of day-to-day city life experiences. The words are delivered through deceptively simple refrains that often mask challenging subject matter. Radio Wars was written and recorded in NYC in the lead up to and during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time which included the run up to the electoral defeat of a fascist president, historic protests against police abuse across the country, as well as the early months of the pandemic, when NYC was at the center of the outbreak. Social and political dissonance, alluded to in the album’s title, was at a high, and that air of con tradiction can be heard throughout, bleeding into moments that feel intimate and reflective. Coupled with bold production choices and feverish energy throughout, Radio Wars is a Cradle album of and for the times.

The Cradle ‘Radio Wars’
On 'Seez' Herva moves away completely from the sample-based music he's most known for and into programming and computational production, which he mixes and compresses with his newly-built hardware tools to give them the life and feeling he requires. There's also an element of randomness in 'Seez' as the music is generative, defined with numbers and ratios from his own software, tuned by ear rather than to set scales, with unexpected outcomes. To make the record, he spent more time digging between the different iterations of each track than coding the programs that generated them. He says "How I make music is kind of weird for most producers, but I like it, and I plan to dig further. You can think of 'Seez' as the alpha version of what I and my system are able to do."
Herva started to work on 'Seez' right after the release of his last Planet Mu album 'Hyper Flux' back in 2017. He was experimenting with home-made hardware and after the album release wanted to raise the bar, challenging himself to build a point-to-point mixer from scratch. This task took almost a year of intense soldering and forced him to scrap music production. Eventually all this hard work grew into making studio hardware properly and he co-founded a new company making mixers and compressors that work with Eurorack, called Audio Gear Obsession.
The new music still retains Herva's laid back airy feel. Each track is like a small ecosystem of chiming tones, wafting drones and skittering rhythms, hinting at formal patterns and melodies but developing on its own abstract terms. It feels as if it's the audio equivalent of watching sped-up recordings of a camera capturing different combinations of plants growing, a pleasant and curious experience to let yourself enjoy.

The Release concert took place on May 28th 2021 with an internationally streamed concert in Norway's stately Grieg Hall – famous for the most iconic true Norwegian black metal recordings. Here, Saroea was backed by award-winning string quartet BIT20 Ensemble (Martin Shultz on violin, Liene Klava on viola, Agnese Rugevica on cello, Johannes Wik on harp with arrangements by Bjørn Morten Christophersen), merging his contemplative indie rock with the exquisite air of a chamber orchestra. Thus, the tracks from Rona Diaries were premiered to an unsuspecting public who were more familiar with his former band’s rhythmic brand of dance music.
OVERVIEW Fredrik Saroea is best known as the frontman of Norway's bizarre, global pisco punk sensation –DATAROCK. After years touring the world with alternative bangers such as "Fa-Fa-Fa" he now presents an entirely different side to his songwriting:. As COVID-19 shut down live music, Saroea started recording in their label YAP Records' studio –YAP HQ in Bergen (Norway) – with DATAROCK drummer Øyvind Solheim helping out engineering & co-producing. The 12 songs jammed in on the 28 minute long album was also mixed by Solheim & Saroea at YAP HQ, and then shipped to UK's legend Mike Marsh (Björk, Massive Attack, Oasis, DATAROCK) for mastering. ANALOGUE DISCO FUNK FROM THE INTERNATIONAL COLLECTIVE
Drawing from the influence of 70s and 80s Nigerian artists such as Nkono Teles, Jake Sollo and Mike Umoh, the Sai Galaxy collective is on a mission to reproduce the analogue warmth and groove from those decades. Consequently, they lean heavily on 70s production techniques - free from the predictable rigidity of digital sequencing. Spearheaded by Australian multi-instrumentalist Simon Durrington (from Digital Afrika), the members include Olugbade Okunade - former trumpet player from Seun Kuti’s Egypt 80 - as well as guests Gabriel Otu, Ray Lédon and Vanessa Baker. While the EP seeks to reflect 70s production, glimpses of contemporary elements can be found in the arrangements and harmonies, at times reminiscent of modern artists such as Lord Echo, Bosq and Voilaaa. Very limited vinyl pressing, 500 copies in a full colour single outer sleeve and full colour printed lyric inner sleeve, housing a 2 -colour blue and yellow cosmic swirl vinyl.. The self -proclaimed ‘Doom witch duo from Osaka ’ drop their 3rd album. ‘In A Bizarre Dream ’ ups the ante considerably, to let rip and define what Blacklab are about. The drums have a humungous ‘Fugazi’ like welly, and the guitars are a boiling maelstrom of fuzz dense riffola and warped psychedelics, with added synth. Yuko’s throat shredding snarls are as mean as a pissed off Satan, and melodious, often within the same song. This is doom meets hardcore punk, hooky melodies, and killer riffs, all cranked up to the max. Japan has always had a special take on ‘noise’ and ‘heavy’ and with ‘In A Bizarre Dream ’ Blacklab add their own spin to that tradition. Gone is the lo -fi approach, here is Blacklab in full effect. The Dream Derealised is a collection of nine abstract, lo fi pieces that were recorded during the summer of 2016, when focusing on creating them helped guide Doyle through a “difficult period of anxiety, panic and a regular dissociative feeling called derealisation.”
The eleven instrumental pieces here come from a place of optimism, imagining a future that is based on cooperation, community and ecological urbanism. It's music intended to sit in this imagined environment rather than impose upon it, similar in princ iple to the function of Kankyō Ongaku (Japanese environmental music).
William Doyle
It’s nearing a decade since William Doyle released Total Strife Forever, as East India Youth in 2014. A year later, he had toured the world and was releasing his second album, Culture of Volume, but it would be another four years before Doyle returned with his third full album, and the first official release under his own name. The dizzyingly ambitious Your Wilderness Revisited arrived in 2019 and was followed last year by the artpop masterpiece, Great Spans of Muddy Time. In the years between leaving the old project behind and re emerging under his own name, Doyle self released a string of ambient leaning albums, The Dream Derealised, Lightnesses Vol I & II and Near Future Residence, which are now to receive a first vinyl pressing via Tough Love.

Lightnesses Vol. I & II sees Doyle create what we might understand as true ambient music that is, music intended for the background that wasn’t composed as such, but allowed to blossom out of the setting of some rules and parameters, played by sounds he created and then resampled.
