The brainchild of Ian Brighton-based melody obsessive Ian Parton, The Go! Team’s fifth album SEMICIRCLE began with an idea; In his head was the image of a school marching band gone rogue, chucking away their sheet music to blast out Northern soul stompers or Japanese indie-pop swooners or old-school hip-hop jams. “I like the swing and the toughness of marching bands, the physicality of feeling a beater walloping a bass drum,” explains Ian, “but I wanted to reclaim them from patriotic or sporty associations. That was the kick-off for this record.” With the vital input of current live players Simone Odaranile (drums) and Angela ‘Maki’ Won-Yin Mak (vocals), plus original Team members Sam Dook (guitar) and Ninja (irrepressible rapping), not to mention Annelotte de Graaf AKA Amber Arcades, and Julie Margat AKA Lispector, topped off by an inspiring trip to Detroit where he hooked up with The Detroit Youth Choir, SEMICIRCLE took shape across the first half of 2017. Stacking up sousaphones, glockenspiels and steel drums, breakbeats and SEMICIRCLE is a kaleidoscopic cacophony, almost as if the sound itself is bent and refracted in the metallic curves of a trumpet, comforting and intoxicating at the same time. One moment we hear the kids from Detroit channelling Rescue Me’ and ‘SOS’ on ‘Mayday’, a morse-code-inspired soul belter about a love emergency, then there’s Ninja unleashing a volley of verbal stingers on ‘She Got Guns’ or the lo-fi R&B vocal for ‘Chain Link Fence’; SEMICIRCLE brings together unlikely elements to create a euphoric, exhilarating experience. Ian is keen to emphasise that the vibrant utopia he and his cohorts have conjured up on their fifth album is not an escapist fantasy but a potentially achievable goal. “It’s about reminding yourself of the good things in life,” says Ian. “We don’t want to be dumbly optimistic and say, ‘Hey, isn’t everything great!’ but there’s something to be said for just getting on with it, for getting organised and not letting the fuckers get you down. They started in 2013 with a happy accident called “Better At Making Time,” the lead track of their 2014 debut Voyage and an unexpected practice-space jam session that crystallized a sound, a philosophy and a future direction all at once. In that sudden moment DeLux snapped into focus as an outfit matching post-punk sentiment and the-sociopolitical-is-personal perspective to joyfully indulgent analog synthesizer soundscapes and a deliriously transportive musical joy. On their 2015 sophomore album Generation—a title activating every sense of the word—De Lux added a new almost-documentary aspect to their dance music, delivering clearly personal stories of anxiety and hopeful aspiration from the place where IRL L.A. exhaustion collides with a digital city that never sleeps. And then at the end of that summer, they started the very first experiments that would lead to their new album. Like Voyage, More Disco Songs About Love starts with the song that made everything clear: “875 Dollars,” a song (in part) about losing the place you’ve always called home. From there it’s a stream-of-consciousness tour through De Lux’s reality, from the family and friends who helped focus the sound of the album to everyday L.A. experiences, including but not limited to elections, evictions, even porn—although in the context you’d least expect, of course. New York City dance-punk legend Sal P. of Liquid Liquid—who did a De Lux remix on their first-ever release—takes featured vocals on the relentless “Smarter Harder Darker” and the Pop Group’s maniacal Mark Stewart pushes “Stratosphere Girl” into interstellar overdrive. (Plus Guerin’s mother Marie helps out with some very French examination of crepe preferences on “Music Snob,” mutant sibling to Generation’s surreal “Oh Man The Future.”)

By putting forth the work of the performer/creator above that of the composer, this back-and forth takes the listener on a journey that is at once timeless and eminently current. Over six centuries ago, at the dawn of the 15th century, unknown scribes – authentic artists or inspired copyists, that we do not know – collected over fifty vocal compositions, some from the previous century. Liturgical or secular, anonymous or bearing the imprint of the Ars nova’s most famous French and Italian composers (Jacopo da Bologna, Francesco Landini, Guillaume de Machaut, Pierre des Molins...), these works were transcribed on two parallel staves, which was unusual at the time and indicate that they were intended for keyboard. Thus the Codex Faenza – named after the Ravenna-adjacent town where it is kept – created circa 1420 and rediscovered in the 1930s, became an object of fascination for harpsichordists, organists and pianists the world over, as one of the oldest keyboard scores to have survived. In 1964, in the American West Coast city of San Francisco, composer Terry Riley, then age 29, invented American repetitive music with his In C, with an ensemble featuring Morton Subotnik, Pauline Oliveros and Steve Reich. At the same time, in 1964-65, he would compose his Keyboard Studies, in the vein of In C. Based on improvisation, they are loosely articulated around the free combination of a series of melodic cells of different lengths, giving the pianist the freedom to use them following a freeform protocol. Keyboard Study No. 2, in particular, is noted on concentrically-arranged circular staves, is a series of three- to ten-note fragments, with no indication of rhythm, and which the performer can even transpose in pitch. A prototype of the young composer’s “open forms” a precursor of the extra-occidental improvisational practice he would go on to develop under Indian master Pandit Prân Nath. Fast forward to today, with Bruce Brubaker bridging those two worlds and simultaneously resurrecting two sources – seemingly the most appropriate term in this instance – across their 550-year divide. The American pianist intertwines them on one album, working out their textures to bring out their differences – the Codex Faenza’s quasi-declaratory, rhythmically-unstable dimension contrasting with Riley’s metronomic ostinatos – as well as their similitudes, in particular their rhythmic ambiguity: in the Codex Faenza for example, the instrumentalist is sometimes free to choose the alignment of left and right hand, and thus, the piece’s dissonance. English musician Charles Howl returns with his second album, which follows on from his 2015 debut Sir Vices. Enthralled by soundtracks and pop music in all its forms, Howl updates classic motifs to create a signature aesthetic. Introducing strings and lush orchestration to dazzling effect, he is comfortable with both wide-open song structures and intimate headphone tracks. He returned to Amsterdam to write and record the album, a city he knew well having run away there when he was eighteen. Harry Stafford the singer and guitarist of 80s post punk/Garage/blues outfit Inca Babies decided to explore his love of piano blues by abandoning everything he held and cherished to make some new music with a piano and a head full of ideas. Slowly, as is the nature of a project steered by passion, a sense of direction and aptitude began to manifest itself in the chiming blues of his piano and a heartfelt lament. For the past two years, Nils Frahm has been building a brand new studio in Berlin to make his 7th studio album titled All Melody, which will be released on January 26th, 2018 via Erased Tapes, before Nils embarks on his first world tour since 2015. Since the day Nils first encountered the impressive studio of a family friend, he had envisioned to create one of his own at such a large scale. Fast forward to the present day and Nils is now the proud host of Saal 3, part of the historical 1950s East German Funkhaus building beside the River Spree. It is here where he has spent most of his time deconstructing and reconstructing the entire space from the cabling and electricity to the woodwork, before moving on to the finer elements; building a pipe organ and creating a mixing desk all from scratch with the help of his friends. This is somewhere music can be nurtured and not neglected, and where he can somewhat fulfil his pursuit of presenting music to the world as close to his imagination as possible. His previous albums have often been accompanied with a story, such as Felt (2011) where he placed felt upon the hammers of the piano out of courtesy to his neighbours when recording late at night in his old bedroom studio, and the following album Screws (2012) when injuring his thumb forced him to play with only nine fingers. His new album is born out of the freedom that his new environment provided, allowing Nils to explore without any restrictions and to keep it All about the Melody.

“In the process of completion, any album not only reveals what it has become but, maybe more importantly, what it hasn't become. All Melody was imagined to be so many things over time and it has been a whole lot, but never exactly what I planned it to be. I wanted to hear beautiful drums, drums I've never seen or heard before, accompanied by human voices, girls, and boys. They would sing a song from this very world and it would sound like it was from a different space. I heard a synthesiser which sounds like a harmonium playing the All Melody, melting together with a line of a harmonium sounding like a synthesiser. The songs came in the flow of the year: days of vomit and days of ecstasy and escape too, and days between. The rulebook may have been tossed, but Freedom’s Goblin is thick with deep songwriting resources, be it stomper, weeper, ballad, screamer, banger or funker-upper, all diverted into new Tydentities — each one marking a different impasse, like a flag whirling into a knot, exploding and burning on contact, in the name of love and loathing. Freedom’s Goblin wears a twisted production coat: tracks were cut all around, from L.A. to Chicago to Memphis, whether chilling at home or touring with the Freedom Band. Five studios were required to get all the sounds down, engineered by Steve Albini, F. Bermudez, Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell and of course, Ty himself. The goal was getting free, embracing any approach necessary to communicate new heights and depths, new places for the fuzz to land among octaving harmonies, dancefloor grooves, synths, saxes and horns, jams, post-Nicky-Hopkins r’n’b electric piano vibes, children-of-the-corn psycho-rebellions, old country waltzes and down-by-the-river shuffles. Basically, the free-est pop songs Ty’s ever put on tape. And one about his dog, too! We’re ALL Goblins and we ALL want our Freedom. The freedom to love or to be alone; to be pretty or pretty ugly; the freedom to turn the other cheek or to turn up the volume. And of course, the freedom to make just about any kind of song you think will free people when they hear it. Their debut album oh my is a collection of sophisticated modern pop songs that resonate in the gaps, the space between deadlines and timelines. Whilst most poets revel in the personal, NADINE’s process is collaborative whose core is singer Nadia Hulett (part of the loose collective Phantom Posse) and Julian Fader and Carlos Hernandez (both of Ava Luna). Soul Jazz Records’ Brasil album was recorded in Rio de Janeiro in 1994 with a host of legendary Brazilian musicians including Sivuca, Raul de Souza and singer Joyce Moreno – and has remained one of the key defining early releases from the record label. Out-of-print for over 20 years (!) the album has now been fully digitally re-mastered for this new 2018 edition. The album was recorded at the height of the first wave of interest in Brazilian music in London in the 1990s. Joyce and a group led by husband drummer Tutty Moreno had just been brought to the UK for the first time ever by Gilles Peterson and Brazilian music obsessive Joe Davis (and future head of Far Out Records) and performed to over 2,000 new young fans. Singer-songwriter Joyce had been a living legend in her native Brazil ever since the Bossa Nova movement of the 196os and had made her first record when she was just 20, and described by Antonio Carlos Jobim as ‘one of the greatest singers of all time.’ Joyce Moreno agreed to be involved in the project to record an album in Brazil produced with a UK sensibility and Tutty Moreno’s group signed up as the house-band for the project. Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records) and Joe Davis then flew to Rio de Janeiro, searching out studios and rehearsal spaces.

During this time in Brazil more artists signed up for the project including legendary figureheads of the Brazilian music Sivuca (who brought his own group) and trombonist Raul de Souza. Other key figures included singer/guitarist Celia Vaz who worked extensively as arranger with the legendary Quarteto Em Cy and drummer Dom Um Romao; Wanda Sá, who played in Sergio Mendes’ original seminal bossa nova group Brasil 65 (during which time she married the artist Edu Lobo); and legendary saxophone/flautist Teco Cardoso whose bio reads like a who’s who of Brazilian music and includes work with Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi, Baden Powell, Joao Donato, Carlos Lyra and others.
6. Pirulito – Capoeira
The final piece to this Brazilian jigsaw was the addition of percussionist Pirulito – whose stunning display of self-made instruments allowed him to magically create the massive sound of Rio’s Samba Schools live inside the studio. The album was recorded over one hot summer, mixed in London and then released at the end of 1994.

Starting out as a bedroom project for Swedish musician Hannes Ferm, HOLY released his debut “Stabs” in 2015. Whilst that record was a thrilling mix of 60s garage rock and lo-fi pop - drawing comparisons to the work of White Fence and Deerhunter- The long-awaited second LP, "All These Worlds Are Yours", sees a much bigger production all around. Dumptruck, formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1983 by guitarists and singers Seth Tiven and Kirk Swan, is - for lack of a better turn of a phrase—the band that wouldn't die. Coming quickly out of the gate in the college radio heyday that was the early 1980s, critics and fans alike responded to Tiven and Swan's earliest efforts, 1984's D is for Dumptruck and 1986's Positively Dumptruck, with rave reviews. A following quickly grew, but the wear and tear of years on the road led to Swan deciding to part ways with the band in late '86. Tiven, faced with calling it quits or carrying on did the only thing he knew to do— soldier on. Now based out of Austin, Texas and with a rotating collection of steady bandmates, Tiven has released four studio albums in the years since. From 1987's critically acclaimed for the country to 2001's muscular Lemmings Travel to the Sea, Tiven has stayed true to his original muse—powerfully personal songs floating on an endless wave of driving guitar. Wrecked is the first album of new material from Dumptruck in 17 years. The initial recordings were started in 2007 as a reunion between Tiven and Swan. After a year and a half working on the record together, Swan decided to take the songs he had written to use for a solo record, but his guitar playing is still featured on many of the songs on Wrecked. Tiven, after numerous stops and re-starts, finished the recording over the next several years, and it is only now seeing the light of day. "Wrecked is a somewhat political title and reflects how I feel right now…", says Seth Tiven, songwriter and sole continuous member of the band. Scheduled for a January 2018 release, Wrecked is a triumphant return to form for Tiven and his bandmates. Filled with the ringing, swirling, and twanging signature guitar work that has always been the bands hallmark, Tiven's songwriting has never been steadier or more pointed, with perhaps, a touch more anger and a lot more of the wisdom that comes with having kept Dumptruck alive and vital for all of these years.

Palmbomen II Memories of Cindy Cindy is the eulogized muse behind Palmbomen II’s newest collection of limitless dance music. Appearing anecdotally in a cable access talk show and a four part 12” EP series episodically scored by Palmbomen II’s patent melodic house and remote, otherworldly fidelity, her story takes stage once more in Memories of Cindy. Kai Hugo, the artist behind Palmbomen II (and its sister project, the traditionally “live” band Palmbomen), is an idiosyncratic producer that relies on spontaneity as much as structure. Almost identical to the process that prompted Palmbomen II’s self-titled debut (Beats In Space, 2015), Hugo worked through several iterations of each MOC track in a single day before using a comprehensive end edit to create a piece with an immediate, impossible feel. On said self-titled album, Hugo applied vocals only to the video realizations of Palmbomen II’s songs. On MOC vocals appear as a primary component of and conduit to a stranger, haunted space. Whether contributing to the narrative as spoken word or morose melodies, it’s as disquieting as the echoed vaults from which they come that some other voice is now guiding Kai’s vessel. This voice and world is Cindy’s, the paradigm depicted in Hugo’s self-scripted and directed videos and films. Hugo’s visual practice provides a separate view of the Palmbomen II venture: a surreal, neo noir-ish California dislocated by the no-frills aesthetic of its music, and the tragicomedy of its imagined characters. The word “palmbomen” is in fact Dutch for palm trees. Hugo’s background fuels the expatriate’s fascination with California as an alternate universe of curious, convoluted culture and mutant music habitats. The airwaves of the world envisioned for Palmbomen II’s unfolding narrative are familiar, yet discordant, set apart from the gloss of the contemporary with an inquisitive view toward excavating a past that seems contrarily to have long been post-human, or perhaps not only human. The scenes and characters Kai creates in his musical and visual landscapes seem to transmit from another planet, though his own world is the more indistinguishable, alien impetus. Creating in isolation while contemplating these irregularly scheduled programs, it’s unsurprising that Kai would find solace and stability in Cindy. After her final respects are paid and very existence questioned, a new album of Palmbomen II music—pulsing with odd particularity and evoking a somber, surreal sound of a fifth-dimensional West Coast panorama—appears in her place. Palmbomen II’s Memories of Cindy is available January 26, 2018 on Beats In Space and collects the three EPs released on vinyl as a complete digital and CD release expanded to feature the fourth EP originally exclusive to the limited box set. The show takes form as Real Talk (scripted and directed by Hugo, “starring” Hugo as himself alongside Damon Palermo of Magic Touch as show host Samantha), providing a separate view of the Palmbomen II venture. • MOC was influenced by Hugo’s interest in the Dutch Bunker and Belgium New Beat scene of late 80s early 90s, as well as his love for Chicago House and Acid. • Hugo’s music has appeared in the notorious video game Grand Theft Auto V, leading him to be commissioned by Sony to soundtrack their 2014 video game Metrico.

Dommengang, guitarist Dan “Sig” Wilson, bassist Brian Markham, and drummer Adam Bulgasem, recorded their sophomore album Love Jail shortly after relocating to Los Angeles. It was not just a coast shift for two of the members, but the first time the band were together in one city. The sophomore album reflects the openness of their new surroundings as well as the energy and experience of being reunited and playing together in the same place. Dommengang have adapted to the arid climates, and imbued their particular brand of rock with a heavy dose of the best of 1970’s rock aesthetics, including at least one ballad. The album was produced by The Fucking Champs guitarist and engineer Tim Green (Joanna Newson, Howlin’ Rain, Sleepy Sun, Fresh and Onlys) who perfectly captured the band’s sound while creating the space of older analog recordings. Love Jail includes Dommengang’s most melodic and lyric-heavy songs to date - a great road trip record, and a dynamic listen that is of the moment, organic and earthy with a heavy nod to the clear, lean recordings of a time long before any of its members were born. Over the course of ten songs, Dommengang draw widely from the American rock music lexicon, primarily influenced by electric blues. The band draws from the guitar-driven sounds of the blues as much its energy and sense of freedom. The clash of Sig Wilson’s psychedelic roots and the punk-tinged backgrounds of Markham and Bulgasem, gives Love Jail its grit. From the earth-scorching passages of “Pastel City” to the spaced-out flourishes of “Dave’s Boogie,” to the dirty funk of “I’m Out Mine,” the album is a desert driver’s dream. The guitar and vocal interplay of “Color Out of Space,” or the anthemic choruses of “Going Down Fast” are rock the way it used to be: no heavy effects, just bass, drums, and guitar, great songs of love and lust, all with a healthy dose of guitar solos. Handpicked by Nostalgia 77 and Tru Thoughts, this retrospective showcases the best recordings and remixes from the respected producer, composer, songwriter and guitarist, spanning a range of projects. Featured on this fantastic anniversary release, are classics like Prince Fatty’s “Medicine Chest Dub” and the second to none take of “Seven Nation Army” featuring the phenomenal vocals from the ever-soulful Alice Russell. Also included on the retrospective, the beautiful tripped out hip hop take on “Sleepwalker” from fellow Brightonian producer Ambassadeurs, and a track from Lamdin’s country soul project with acclaimed songwriter Jeb Loy Nichols.
