Our Backstage Coffee Lounge & Wine Bar is located behind the stage in the Large Hall. It’s a place where you can relax whilst deciding which lovely pieces of art to buy! The Coffee Lounge is managed by Puddini At The Deli and the Wine Bar is managed by Hotel Du Vin.

When we first set out on this journey in 2012 to create a high-quality, international art fair in the centre of Cambridge we hoped that, one day, it would become established as one of the best art fairs in the UK.

We hope you’ll agree that this third edition of the event is well on its way to achieving that goal. With many of our regular exhibitors participating for the third year and lots of newcomers attracted to the event by word of mouth, we believe that we have created one of the best quality art fairs anywhere in the UK showing a mix of 20th and 21st century art. This year you will be able to view and buy highly collectible original prints and sketches by Modern Masters such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali & Marc Chagall. Alongside these, you will find original art and prints produced by some of today’s leading Artists such as Damien Hirst, Banksy and even a David Hockney or two. You may already know that Cambridge had its own equivalent of the St. Ives group in the mid-20th century, the Great Bardfield group. The Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden holds a large collection of work by this group and will be participating in the fair for the first time this year. Emma Mason Gallery will be showing work by the group too. Whatever you are looking for we are confident that you will find it at Cambridge Art Fair this year and, if not, there will be several professionals present who can source it for you. AccessArt is the UK’s leading provider of online resources that support visual arts teaching and learning. The art world can seem to the outsider like a secretive, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life. To make that happen for you, we aim to make buying art at Cambridge Art Fair a safe and supportive experience for all, whether expert or novice. The combined knowledge and experience of the galleries and dealers exhibiting at Cambridge Art Fair will ensure that you are able to find the perfect piece of art to suit you and your needs, even if you don’t know what you are looking for yet! When you wander through the two halls that accommodate the art fair, you will discover high quality modern art from the 20th century and exciting contemporary work by some of todays leading British and international artists at a range of prices. So how about some tips on ‘how’ to buy?
The big secret is... there is no secret!
The most important thing to know about buying art, either as a one off or as the start of a collection, is that there’s no list of things that you need to know before you jump in. If you see a piece of art that you absolutely love and you want to buy it, then buy it! You don’t need to have credentials or a degree in Art History to start a collection, you just need to have a desire to collect and the means to pay for it. The more you expose yourself to art and the art world in general, the more you will be able to evaluate what is fundamentally good art, what suits your taste and how to build and develop your collection. If you are collecting for investment purposes then you will need to research as much as possible and more importantly build relationships with good quality, experienced dealers and galleries who can advise you further.

It is you that will live with the art for many years so it has to be something that you are confident you will enjoy.
Ask questions
One of the major benefits of buying art from an art fair that has a vetting process, like Cambridge Art Fair, is that you know that the work on display has already met stringent criteria based on quality. Even so, if you have questions about a piece of work or the artist responsible, just ask the dealer or gallery selling the work. The gallery or dealer will have established a good relationship with the artist over a period of time and have invested themselves in that work because they believe it has merit. Don’t be nervous about asking ‘stupid’ questions - there’s no such thing. You could ask questions about the artist: What are their credentials? Where have they exhibited? What is their training? Can you see the artist’s CV? Or you could ask about the work: When was the art produced? What is it’s provenance, it’s history? What method and materials did the artist use?
Set a budget
Like you would with any major purchase- set a budget. Be realistic with your budget - if you are looking for a huge, signature piece for your home then you should already know that £200 will be unlikely to get you what you need. However, if you are looking for a small framed print for a corner somewhere in your home then you should have lots of choice at £200. Cambridge Art Fair features work that begins at a very affordable £75 and goes all the way up to the tens of thousands and beyond. Be prepared for the possibility you will see something you absolutely love but is completely beyond your budget. Whatever you fall in love with, know that you have options available.
The ‘Own Art’ scheme
Many of our dealers and galleries participate in the Arts Council funded ‘Own Art’ scheme which gives you an opportunity to pay for the art you love in ten interest free instalments. We encourage those dealers and galleries to put a small sign up in their stands indicating that they are part of the scheme, but if you don’t see a sign- ask anyway.
Know your own taste
As mentioned above, if you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. You should get into the habit of exploring different styles and periods, researching Artists and exposing yourself to art. Visit local museums and galleries to see what appeals to you. You might find that a certain colour shade resonates with you or that you have a penchant for abstracted landscapes. The simple act of looking at art will enable you to identify what art you like and, therefore, what art you should buy. You can educate yourself and develop your taste over a period of time but, ideally, it should come down to whether or not you actually enjoy a piece of art.
Prints
Prints offer an affordable option when buying art but it’s not quite as simple as buying a reproduction of an image. There are many different types of print: engravings, lithographs, screen prints, aquatints, linocuts and woodblock prints are some of the most common types. For several of those methods, the Artist uses a specific method to create an original image on a surface like, such as wood, metal or stone. They would then apply paint or ink and then create a print onto paper. This is called an original print because each one is slightly different to the others. These types of print are usually produced by the Artist’s hand and will, most likely, be limited to a small run. There are other types of print that do not necessarily involve the artist in the reproduction process, such as lithographs and giclée prints (digital prints using inkjet printers). Always ask which method was used to produce a print before you buy it. Ordinarily, it is important to only buy limited edition prints, whether lithograph, giclée or any of the ‘Artist hand’ methods. Notable exceptions to this rule are vintage posters and prints by some of todays more celebrated /infamous Artists, such as Banksy and Damien Hirst, which are available in large or unlimited editions.

From Shoe Lover To Art Collector, Thanks to Cambridge Art Fair When Sarah Decent, owner of Modish Shoes in Green Street, came to the Cambridge Art Fair last year she had no idea what to expect. “A friend invited me along as she thought I’d love it. I was wandering around sipping wine and admiring all the fantastic art when it happened: I glanced up towards the stage, and there it was- a painting so beautiful I stopped dead in my tracks.”

“I had no intention of buying anything and didn’t have much spare cash.” If you’ve ever visited Sarah’s shop you’ll know she has a rather keen interest in (obsession with?) shoes, which might explain her lack of disposable income... “So, very reluctantly, and after many wistful glances, I walked away.” That’s not the end of the story though. “I couldn’t get that painting out of my head. So I called the gallery first thing on Monday morning and, to cut a long story short, ‘The Lake’ by Tess Recordon now has pride of place at the end of my bed!” Has Sarah been pleased with her decision to buy the painting last year? “Every morning when I wake up it’s pretty much the first thing I see. It was quite an investment for me, but it was worth every penny.” You can see the painting Sarah fell in love with on display in the window of her shop, Modish, 3 Green Street Cambridge, for the duration of the fair.

We experienced our first live model photoshoot on location for this year’s marketing campaign. The campaign couldn’t have happened without the co-operation and support of several people to whom we are eternally grateful. Amanda Page of Gap Learning CIC very kindly accepted our invitation to model for the campaign and she brought Holly Barrett to the photoshoot. We’d like to thank them for all their hard work on the day and for being perfect as the faces of the Cambridge Art Fair 2015. David and Mike of Jones & Jones Fine Furniture in Great Shelford were generous enough to lend their fabulous showroom as the location for the photoshoot. But neither of them were brave enough to agree to model for us as part of the campaign!
The fabulous artwork featured in the campaign was supplied by The Strover Gallery and Blue Contemporary. Lynne Strover at The Strover Gallery loaned work by Henrietta Dubrey, Fred Ingrams and Christopher Marvell. The large framed painting to the left of Holly in the photo above is called ‘Harbour’ by Henrietta Dubrey and is absolutely wonderful. Marlo Gilbert of Blue Contemporary kindly loaned work by John Lyons, James Shilaimon and Georgi Andonov. The eyecatching blue-coloured monkey head is by Georgi Andonov and has been a real talking point of the campaign. We absolutely love the green chair painting called ‘Hannah’s Chair’ by James Shilaimon, especially as it looked so similar to the green sofa Holly was sitting on!

The Fry Art Gallery Society Fundraising Message The Fry Art Gallery Society was formed in 1985 to acquire paintings, prints, illustrations etc. principally by those 20th Century Artists who became known as ‘The Great Bardfield Artists’ as they all lived in or around this village in North West Essex. We hold what is effectively the National Collection of works by such Artists as Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, John Aldridge, Michael Rothenstein, Kenneth Rowntree, George Chapman and many others. The Gallery is open free of charge to the public where items from the Permanent Collection are displayed each year in the Main Gallery; special Exhibitions are created each year and displayed in the second Gallery- most recently an Exhibition of work by Kenneth Rowntree which has gone on to Pallant House, Chichester. A unique opportunity has arisen for the Fry Art Gallery to buy the freehold of the property after 30 years of leasing the building. This is an exciting opportunity to secure the future of our nationally important Collection of work by the artists from Great Bardfield and Saffron Walden. The purchase of the freehold will allow us to maintain the atmosphere, location,and domestic scale in which we display pictures, books and ceramics which tell the story of the North West Essex artists, while at the same time allowing us to expand the gallery to create vitally important education, display, storage and research space. A deadline has been set for completion of the purchase by the end of the year, which means that we must have funds in place by 1st December, so there is some urgency!
