Motor Show EAST A celebration of everything automotive Welcome to the inaugural Motor Show EAST, an event that we are determined will become a regular fixture in the events calendar for the Eastern Region. This family friendly event is a celebration of everything automotive, showcasing new cars, vintage, classic and modified cars, motorbikes, alternative fuel vehicles, supercars, powered pushbikes, automotive accessories and services. There are special interest displays, GT3 racing cars, club meets, a shopping area, a fantastic selection of children’s activities to keep your little ones occupied and a wonderful selection of food and drink retailers to tempt you during your visit to Motor Show EAST. We even have the world’s smallest food van attempting a world record here at the show! Hello, my name is Ian Mattioli and I’m Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Mattioli Woods plc. An AIM-listed company that started life 27 years ago in a converted garage at my home in Leicester, it now employs more than 600 people at nine locations including Newmarket, London, Manchester, Aberdeen and Glasgow. The largest of these remains in Leicester, where later this year we will move into new purpose-built offices in the heart of the city, helping secure the future of Mattioli Woods for the next 50 years and beyond. Of course, all this represents a sea change from our humble beginnings; when Bob Woods and I decided to give up secure jobs to go-it-alone in an industry where we felt bad practice was rife and clients were being short-changed. If you like, we wanted to challenge the status quo. We were disruptors, seeing what was wrong and wanting to make a difference. In some quarters, that made us unpopular.Yet, we knew what was right. Today, as back then, our overriding passion is to deliver the best possible outcomes for the people who trust us to look after their wealth. It is a responsibility we feel privileged to shoulder, whether that be through pensions, investments, or new innovations like our Structured Products Fund – yet another example of us challenging convention and launching an industry “first”, which already has more than £200 million of assets under

management just 18 months after its inception. Innovation like this has been crucial to the Mattioli Woods success story, and remains paramount to our future progress and prosperity. We recognise we live in a world of change, so strive to ensure we keep pace with the latest advances in technology, such as our new Total Wealth portal, which is to launch shortly. For the first time, this fully interactive digital experience will allow clients to assess their net worth at the touch of a button. However, moving with the times doesn’t mean we’ve forsaken the values and virtues that have served us so well through the years. Indeed, many of the original investors from our days back in the garage are still with us. Today, we look after more than 10,000 investors across the wealth management and employee benefits spectrums, while we have more than £8.3 billion of assets under management, administration and advice. We continue to look to grow the business, both organically and – where the fit is right – through acquisition. Our graduate and apprenticeship recruitment programme is something I am particularly proud of – we are one of the biggest graduate recruiters in Leicester, for one, but also work hard to develop school leavers and apprentices across the group through a robust ongoing recruitment strategy. In 2015, we chose Breast Cancer Now as our first national charity partner. Since then, staff across the group have helped raise around £200,000 to help fund vital research work and, ultimately, save lives. The charity – and its invaluable work – is hugely important to us. Here in Newmarket – and the East Anglia region – we have been delighted to give our backing to many charities and causes. These include Newmarket Open Door, which provides vulnerable people with supported housing and training opportunities.

As well as our charity involvement, the group takes seriously its moral and social responsibilities, particularly in the communities it serves. A good example is the time and effort devoted by chief investment officer Simon Gibson to the importance of educating children about finance. Simon, who is based in Newmarket, has even devised his own scheme –the Four Pots technique – to help people understand the value of money from an elderly age. We are also big supporters of sport and, among others, have engaged in sponsorship of Leicester Tigers Rugby Club and world record-holding wheelchair racer Sammi Kinghorn, whose career we have backed from its infancy. All of this makes me extremely proud to lead such a dynamic 21st century financial services business, built with expertise and integrity, and delivered with passion.
