WELCOME TO THE 6TH EDITION OF THE CAMBRIDGE ART FAIR Cambridge Art Fair is still the largest sale of 20th and 21st century original fi ne art and prints in the eastern region. It takes a year of planning, over a hundred people and two and a half days to build, just for you. This year our well-established event gets a refresh and a lovely new home at Quy Mill Hotel & Spa, with free parking and easy access to the road network for the fi rst time ever. We’ve also partnered the event with a new boutique home interest & lifestyle show called Inspire Cambridge, presented by Velvet Magazine. Over the years, tens of thousands of people have visited the event, some visit purely out of interest and others come specifi cally to buy a piece of art. Whatever your motivation for attending Cambridge Art Fair, we love to hear your stories and receive your feedback. An event like Cambridge Art Fair is so much more than the sum of it’s parts and it contributes much more greatly to the cultural environment in the East of England than a three and a half day annual event really should. One of the things that hasn’t changed this year is the mixture of 20th and 21st Century art. This year we have regulars Oriel Fine Art, together with Granta Fine Art (back for their second year) & a fabulous retrospective by Berlin Artist Walter Lindner, devised & managed by Simon Hearnden. Our Charity Partner this year is the absolutely stunning David Parr House, a recently discovered treasure for Cambridge. If you haven’t heard about

it, read more on page 10 of this fair guide and make sure you book a visit once it offi cially opens next year. If you’ve visited Cambridge Art Fair before you will be pleased to see the return of many of our most popular regulars, such as Eleven & A Half, The Darryl Nantais Gallery (now referred to as ‘Linton 59’ at art fairs), Robert Fogell Gallery, Lilford Gallery and Sheridan Russell Gallery. There are plenty of newcomers this year too, boasting fantastic portfolios of artists from all over the world. Our thanks, as ever, go to all of the wonderful businesses that have supported the event this year, especially our Private View sponsor Hannay Robertson Financial Planning. We would also like to thank Ricky, Dawn & the team at Iliffe Media for the media partnership with Cambridge Independent & Velvet Magazine. The coverage written by Alice Ryan has, as always, been exceptional. As always, the smooth running of the art fair relies on the commitment and professionalism of our volunteers and staff. We thank you all for your invaluable contribution- we really couldn’t do it without you. Fleur & I hope you enjoy the art fair this year and fi nd something beautiful that you can enjoy for many years. Thank you all for coming.

Craig Kerrecoe, Fair Director

Cambridge Art Fair, the largest sale of 20th & 21st century original fine art in the eastern region, provides you with an opportunity to select and acquire great art and live with it, experience it in your own environment, get to know it and share it with others- all with the reassurance of buying from professional dealers and galleries who have spent years, even decades, carefully selecting talented artists worthy of your investment. The art world can seem, to the outsider, like a secretive, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life. To make that happen for you, we make buying art at Cambridge Art Fair a safe and supportive experience for all, whether expert or novice. The combined knowledge and experience of the galleries and dealers exhibiting at Cambridge Art Fair will ensure that you are able to find the perfect piece of art to suit you and your needs, even if you don’t know what you are looking for yet! When wander through the art fair, you will discover high quality modern art from the 20th century all the way through to exciting contemporary work by some of todays leading British and international artists at a range of prices. So how about some tips on ‘how’ to buy?

The big secret is... there is no secret!

The most important thing to know about buying art, either as a one off or as the start of a collection, is that there’s no list of things that you need to know before you jump in. If you see a piece of art that you absolutely love and you want to buy it, then buy it! You don’t need to have credentials or a degree in Art History to start a collection, you just need to have a desire to collect and the means to pay for it. The more you expose yourself to art and the art world in general, the more you will be able to evaluate what is fundamentally good art, what suits your taste and how to build and develop your collection. If you’re collecting for investment purposes then you’ll need to research as much as possible and build relationships with good quality, experienced dealers and galleries who can advise you further.

CambridgeArtFair.com

“Acquire great art and live with it, experience it in your own environment, get to know it and share it with othersall with the reassurance of buying from professional dealers and galleries who have spent years, even decades, carefully selecting talented artists worthy of your investment.” If however, you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. It is you that will live with the art for many years so it has to be something that you are confident you will enjoy.

Ask questions

One of the major benefits of buying art from an art fair that has a vetting process, like Cambridge Art Fair, is that you know that the work on display has already met stringent criteria based on quality. Even so, if you have questions about a piece of work or the artist responsible, just ask the gallerist or dealer selling the work. The gallerist or dealer will have established a good relationship with the artist over a period of time and have invested themselves in that work because they believe it has merit. Don’t be nervous about asking ‘stupid’ questions - there’s no such thing. You could ask questions about the artist: What are their credentials? Where have they exhibited? What is their training? Can you see the artist’s CV? Or you could ask about the work: When was the art produced? What is it’s provenance, it’s history? What method and materials did the artist use?

Set a budget

Like you would with any major purchase- set a budget. Be realistic with your budget - if you are looking for a huge, signature piece for your home then you should already know that £200 will be unlikely to get you what you need. However, if you are looking for a small framed print for a corner somewhere in your home then you should have lots of choice at £200.

Art Collecting Made Easy

Cambridge Art Fair features work that begins at a very affordable £75 and goes all the way up to the tens of thousands and beyond. Be prepared for the possibility you will see something you absolutely love but is completely beyond your budget. Whatever you fall in love with, know that you have options available.

The ‘Own Art’ scheme

Many of our dealers and galleries participate in the Arts Council funded ‘Own Art’ scheme which gives you an opportunity to pay for the art you love in ten interest free instalments. Ask them directly.

Know your own taste

As mentioned above, if you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. You should get into the habit of exploring different styles and periods, researching Artists and exposing yourself to art. Visit local museums and galleries to see what appeals to you. You might find that a certain colour shade resonates with you or that you have a penchant for abstracted landscapes. The simple act of looking at art will enable you to identify what art you like and, therefore, what art you should buy. You can educate yourself and develop your taste over a period of time but, ideally, it should come down to whether or not you actually enjoy a piece of art.

Prints

Prints offer an affordable option when buying art but it’s not quite as simple as buying a reproduction of an image. There are many different types of print: engravings, lithographs, screen prints, aquatints, linocuts and woodblock prints are some of the most common types. For several of those methods, the Artist uses a specific method to create an original image on a surface, such as wood, metal or stone. They would then apply paint or ink and then create a print onto paper. This is called an original print because each one is slightly different to the others. These types of print are usually produced by the Artist’s hand and will, most likely, be limited to a small run. There are other types of print that do not necessarily involve the artist in the reproduction process, such as lithographs and giclée prints (digital prints using inkjet printers). Always ask which method was used to produce a print before you buy it. Ordinarily, it is important to only buy limited edition prints, whether lithograph, giclée or any of the ‘Artist hand’ methods. Notable exceptions to this rule are vintage posters and prints by some of todays most celebrated or infamous Artists, such as Banksy and Damien Hirst, which are available in large or unlimited editions.

Cambridge is about to welcome a new hidden gem to its cultural offering. Next Spring David Parr House at 186 Gwydir Street will open to the public for the first time although a lucky few have already been through the front door. David Parr worked by day as an artist painter for the local firm of F R Leach & Sons, a Cambridge firm of artist decorators and craftsmen who created interiors for William Morris and other leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. He would return to his ordinary terraced house, and working by candlelight, he created an extraordinary interior for his own private enjoyment. Volunteer-led tours will take visitors through the front door of the David Parr House and into each room of the remarkable house as the stories of the occupants’ lives are revealed. Displays of David Parr’s notebook, diaries, painting tools, photos and family audio recordings will illuminate the day-to-day life of the largely forgotten but talented and highly skilled artisans by exploring Cambridge’s social history, domesticity, the 20th Century home, memories and reminiscence. In 1912, David Parr inscribed on his Drawing Room wall ‘If you do anything, do it well’. This sentiment has inspired the passionate private donors and dedicated volunteers who, over the past five years, have helped to save the David Parr House by conserving and restoring it, partly funded by a Heritage Lottery Grant.

Photo credit: David Parr House CIO With support from National Lottery players every £1 is doubled by Heritage Lottery Fund and Barclay will also match the first £1,000 donated at this year’s Cambridge Art Fair so, with Gift Aid, a Gift of £5 becomes £25, £10 becomes £50 and £50 becomes £250. That’s the kind of maths we like! The David Parr House is currently seeking special people to become founding patrons. They will be offered their own personal experiences including handling special objects from the collection, meeting special guests, invitations to curatorial events and to see behind the scenes before and after the house is open to the public. All gifts and donations go towards building a £1m endowment so that art lovers can enjoy an annual programme of exhibitions, talks, special events and craft workshops. We hope that all our visitors at Cambridge Art Fair 2018 enjoy visiting our stand to see objects from the house and collection on display, to meet some of the people who saved the house. To find out how to become a collections, garden, research or house guide volunteer please speak to us on the stand during the show. Contact Rachel French: rachel@davidparrhouse.org
