WELCOME TO THE FIRST EVER HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL VISUAL ARTS EXPO! The beautiful, historic spa-town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire now boasts an international visual arts expo for the entire northern region to enjoy. The Harrogate International Visual Arts Expo, or HIVE 2015, proudly sponsored by Artfinder, is a major selling fair & expo featuring independent artists, dealers, galleries & art suppliers. HIVE features a wonderful pop-up exhibition of local artists hosted by our major sponsor Artfinderhave a go at curating your own personal exhibition on their interactive screens! You’ll also enjoy an exhibition by the Royal Photographic Society and an exhibition of the finalists from this year’s National Open Art Competition. You won’t be able to miss the fabulous art car MINI’s, courtesy of Stratstone Harrogate & Harrogate School of Arts and make sure you visit their exhibition in the café. We also have a fantastic selection of high quality galleries and dealers, as well as independent Artists, presenting an amazing collection of original art for sale. This is a perfect opportunity to buy a fantastic piece of contemporary art for yourself or as a special gift for a loved one, just in time for Christmas! We are so pleased with the response we’ve received since we launched this event a year ago. We have long believed that Harrogate (and North Yorkshire) deserved a national quality contemporary art fair and have been developing the HIVE concept for many years. This is all possible thanks to the amazing support we have received from all of our sponsors, partners and advertisers- we are enormously grateful to them all. We hope you enjoy the expo! Art Collecting Made Easy

The art world can seem to the outsider like a secretive, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life. To make that happen for you, we have made buying art a safe and supportive experience for all, whether expert or novice. Harrogate International Visual Arts Expo, or HIVE, provides you with an opportunity to select and acquire great art, experience it in your own environment, get to know it and share it with others. HIVE is a mixed show which means that you will see self-representing Artists, side-by-side with independent Galleries and Art Dealers. Buying direct from an Artist gives you the satisfaction of supporting that Artist and engaging with them on a personal level about their work. Buying art through a Gallery or Dealer means that you can be confident that the work you are buying has been quality controlled by an expert. The combined knowledge and experience they offer will ensure that you are able to find the perfect piece of art to suit you and your needs, even if you don’t know what you are looking for yet! As you wander through the Expo, you will discover exciting contemporary work by some of todays leading British and international artists at a range of prices. So how about some tips on ‘how’ to buy?

The big secret is... there is no secret!

The most important thing to know about buying art, either as a one off or as the start of a collection, is that there’s no list of things that you need to know before you jump in. If you see a piece of art that you absolutely love and you want to buy it, then buy it! You don’t need to have credentials or a degree in Art History to start a collection, you just need to have a desire to collect and the means to pay for it. The more you expose yourself to art and the art world in general, the more you will be able to evaluate what is fundamentally good art, what suits your taste and how to build and develop your collection. If you are collecting for investment purposes then you will need to research as much as possible and more importantly build relationships with Artists and good quality, experienced Dealers and Galleries who can

“The art world can seem to the outsider like a secretive, unfamiliar and intimidating place. But it doesn’t have to be like that. We believe that great art should play an important part in everyone’s life.” advise you further. If however, you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. It is you that will live with the art for many years so it has to be something that you are confident you will enjoy.

Ask questions

The most important thing to do if you are interested in a piece of art is to ask questions of the Artist, Gallery or Dealer that is selling it. A good Gallery or Dealer will have established a good relationship with the Artist over a period of time and have invested themselves in that work because they believe it has merit. An Artist will most likely have prepared a statement that tells you about the work and may also have copies of their Resumé for you to see. Don’t be nervous about asking ‘stupid’ questions - there’s no such thing. You could ask questions about the Artist: What are their credentials? Where have they exhibited? What is their training? Can you see their CV? Or you could ask about the work: When was the art produced? What is it’s provenance, it’s history? What method and materials did the Artist use?

Set a budget

Like you would with any major purchase- set a budget. Be realistic with your budget - if you are looking for a huge, signature piece for your home then you should already know that £200 will be unlikely to get you what you need. However, if you are looking for a small framed print for a corner somewhere in your home then you should have lots of choice at £200. HIVE features work that ranges from the affordable to the extravagant. But with all this fabulous work on show, be prepared for the possibility that you will see something you absolutely love but which is completely beyond your budget!

Art Collecting Made Easy

Know your own taste

As mentioned above, if you are collecting for your own enjoyment in the hope that your collection will increase in value over time, make sure that you like what you buy. You should get into the habit of exploring different styles and periods, researching Artists and exposing yourself to art. Visit local museums and galleries to see what appeals to you. You might find that a certain colour shade resonates with you or that you have a penchant for abstracted landscapes. The simple act of looking at art in all it’s forms will enable you to identify what art you like and, therefore, what art you should buy. You can educate yourself and develop your taste over a period of time but, ideally, it should come down to whether or not you actually enjoy a piece of art.

Prints

Prints offer an affordable option when buying art but it’s not quite as simple as buying a reproduction of an image. There are many different types of print: engravings, lithographs, screen prints, aquatints, linocuts and woodblock prints are some of the most common types. For several of those methods, the Artist uses a specific method to create an original image on a surface, such

5

as wood, metal or stone. They would then apply paint or ink and then create a print onto paper. This is called an original print because each one is slightly different to the others. These types of print are usually produced by the Artist’s hand and will, most likely, be limited to a small run. There are other types of print that do not necessarily involve the artist in the reproduction process, such as lithographs and giclée prints (digital prints using inkjet printers). Always ask which method was used to produce a print before you buy it. Ordinarily, it is important to only buy limited edition prints, whether lithograph, giclée or any of the ‘Artist hand’ methods. Notable exceptions to this rule are vintage posters and prints by some of todays more celebrated /infamous Artists, such as Banksy and Damien Hirst, which are available in large or unlimited editions.

Above all else, enjoy yourself!

Everybody needs art in their life, whether they know it or not. It enriches our souls and feeds our minds. It reminds us of forgotten moments and causes us to think more deeply. The art industry is filled with interesting people and exciting events so the process of acquiring art can and should be great fun, so go and have some fun!

The MINI Car Wrap Project

www.HarrogateArtExpo.com

We are very pleased to be working with Harrogate School of Arts and Stratstone MINI on a joint project that has resulted in a MINI ‘car wrap’ that will form part of a MINI exhibition at the inaugural HIVE. Art students at the college were invited to submit artwork for the project and a winner selected from all the submissions by MINI UK. Annabel Smith, the Course Leader at the college, said “The work is spectacular in the flesh. It is all big and dynamic!” The winning piece will be wrapped onto a MINI and brought to HIVE and many of the other submissions will be exhibited at the expo so that we can all enjoy the creativity of the students.

Our thanks to Annabel and the team/students at Harrogate School of Arts for getting involved and submitting lots of wonderful art to the project. Our thanks also go to Georgina Watters, the Head of Business at Harrogate MINI, part of the Stratstone group, for working with Marlo, our Director of Planning & Partnerships, to make the project happen in the first place. We can’t wait to see the MINI and the students exhibition!

VIP Press Launch Reception

The exceptional Hotel Du Vin brand has always supported our art fairs ever since they helped us to launch our inaugural Cambridge Art Fair in 2013. The relationship we have with them moved with us to Harrogate when we launched HIVE and resulted in a wonderful VIP Press Launch Reception in September. Guests included exhibitors, sponsors, advertisers, local business people, VIP’s and representatives from the local press. Stratstone MINI were able to squeeze a new MINI into the courtyard and MINI UK came to see what all the fuss was about too! Our huge thanks to the team at Hotel Du Vin Harrogate for all their efforts and for giving us a wonderful launch event. Thanks also go to Alan Marsham for taking the photographs.
