Watching cliff divers doing their magic sometimes makes it hard to see them as ‘normal’ human beings. But seeing the exact same person jumping and screaming over a cute little mouse certainly helps to correct this view. Ginger Huber is afraid of tiny mice… Besides this confession, the American has dedicated her life to diving and has never stopped promoting the sport – from coaching and training to judging and, of course, competing. The ‘ESPN body issue’ model has tons of experience and is happy to offer it to her younger diving mates. It’s no surprise that sports psychiatrist would’ve been her second job choice. At 42, Ginger still feels comfortable on the podium and so she won 2nd place in Shirahama (JPN) and 3rd on the Azores (POR) in last year’s World Series.

WHY CLIFF DIVING AND NOT BALLET? NO MATTER HOW MANY SPORTS I TRY, I ALWAYS COME BACK TO THE ONES WHERE I AM FLIPPING AND UPSIDE-DOWN.

The acrobat set her first mark at the FINA High Diving World Cup in February 2016 and grabbed the last spot for the World Series to become the youngest ever athlete in the permanent divers line-up. Helena Merten then lived up to the expectations: a podium at the season opener in Texas (3rd) and another one to round off the year in a night event in the Dubai Marina (2nd). In 2017, the 22-year-old continues to be the youngest athlete in the field and her chilled character will definitely be a major advantage when it comes to bettering her own personal best 4th place in the overall rankings. Be it wind or waves, a tight battle or a new dive, the classy diver unhesitatingly does an immaculate handstand more than 20m above the water showing no nerves.
