Dear PGA REACH Carolinas Community:

After a record breaking 2021, I had no idea 2022 could surpass the success golf continues to see, not only in the Carolinas, but across the nation as a whole. However, the game continues to grow and make a difference in so many lives on so many levels This would not be possible without the passion and dedication of people like you!

First and foremost, in 2022 we launched our PGA REACH Carolinas Trustee program, one year early, and have secured 5 of our 21 planned trustees! This program will provide assistance with strategic planning and future trustee/donor recruitment, as well as give the Section the financial stability to have a greater impact on our three pillars of Youth, Military, and Inclusion PGA HOPE Carolinas has impacted the lives of over 3,000 veterans since 2015, with over 1,000 veterans participating this year alone PGA HOPE Chapters also increased to 18 with the addition of the Triangle and Cape Fear Chapters Our 19th Chapter is slated for 2023 in Buies Creek, North Carolina. This total remains the highest total of any Section in the country We also established a relationship with UNC Veterans Law Clinic to

to provide law assistance, pro bono, to our HOPE Veterans. This year’s season culminated with the 5th HOPE Cup presented by TD Bank at Kiawah Island Golf Resort with HOPE Daniel Island taking the title

With COVID hopefully in the rear-view mirror, we relaunched the Harvick4HighSchool Program with four Title 1 schools in Mecklenburg and three Schools in Guilford County being impacted directly with uniforms, equipment, and access to free coaching from PGA professionals. The Harvick4Heroes PGA REACH Pro-Am was a home run at Trump Charlotte with a record $134,000 raised!!

This season we onboarded our 5th PGA WORKS Fellow, Mia Hayasaki, and are proud that all five remain working directly in the golf industry. We conducted the Sifford Memorial Cup at Quail Hollow for HBCU golf programs and participated in the 2nd Annual African-American Golf Expo

PGA Junior League increased by 300 juniors over 2021 with a total of 3,100 participating Our 13U Charlotte 3 League Team coached by Brent Reneau & Mike Abate won the 2022 PGA Junior League 13U National Championship held in Scottsdale, Arizona, a first for the Carolinas Section!

Lastly, The Carolinas Section received the Herb Graffis Award for their outstanding work and accomplishments in the area of player development and community service

PGA REACH Carolinas is excited to share this “PGA REACH Carolinas-Year in Review.” We proudly offer the highlights of the far-reaching impact of our programs and the value they bring to so many people throughout the Carolinas

Lastly, 2022 was a year that will be long remembered as one of the most successful years within our REACH Community. This would not be possible without the passion and dedication of over 2,100 PGA Professionals and our PGA REACH supporters that call the Carolinas home We are truly blessed to have such support from many different avenues to impact the lives of so many deserving people through the power of golf We hope you have a great beginning to 2023, as we continue to impact the lives of even more individuals across the Carolinas!

All the best, Chris Byrd, PGA President of the Carolinas PGA

It is a fun, social, and inclusive opportunity for boys and girls, ages 17 & under, to enjoy the game of golf. Like other recreational youth sports, participants wear numbered jerseys and play on teams with friends. Our Carolinas PGA Professionals captain teams in a popular two-person scramble format which reinforces the team concept and creates a nurturing environment for learning the game of golf. More than 3,000 juniors across the Carolinas participate in this entry point to the game. In 2022, PGA REACH Carolinas lead (4) Section Local-Qualifiers with more than 300 participants These qualifiers led into a PGA Jr League Section Championship at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club.

Giving HOPE

to our Nation's Military Heroes

PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is the flagship military program of PGA REACH Carolinas, the charitable foundation of the Carolinas PGA Section. PGA HOPE introduces golf to Veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. The program introduces the game of golf through a developmental 6-8-week curriculum, taught by Carolinas PGA Professionals trained in adaptive golf and military cultural competency. At no cost to our Veterans, PGA HOPE provides six weeks of adaptive golf instruction, followed by graduation and ongoing playing opportunities.

PGA HOPE has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which enables Recreational Therapists to refer Veterans to the PGA HOPE program as a form of therapy. Through a robust program strategy, PGA HOPE aspires to create a physically and emotionally healthier Veteran community by shaping lives, changing lives, and possibly saving lives through the game of golf.

As our Carolinas PGA HOPE Ambassador, Colton Hensley is helping veterans like him and sharing his story of tragedy and triumph. Hensley served as a Cavalry Scout in the Army for the 101st Airborne Division from 2009-2013. After losing two of his closest friends in Afghanistan and being honorably discharged, Hensley struggled with difficulty adapting to civilian life, drug addiction, and jail time. In 2016 his life changed for the better when he was admitted into an inpatient rehabilitation center by the help of the Veterans Treatment Court. From there he learned about PGA HOPE and the work we are doing to enhance the physical, mental, social and emotional well-being of veterans. He met Brian Oliver, PGA, our PGA HOPE Lead for PGA HOPE Asheville and National Instructor for the program. The two have built a strong relationship and Hensley assists Oliver in recruiting veterans for his program. Today, Hensley is a leader for his fellow veterans. He is a supply technician at the VA Medical Center and able to share his inspiring story and the great work of PGA HOPE.

A QUAIL HOLLOW EXPERIENCE

In early September, our 2022 Sunny Harris Hutchinson PGA WORKS Fellow, Mia Hayasaki, had the privilege of working the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club Part of her experience included working alongside her fellow Carolinas PGA Section staff members to pick up the range and sort golf balls for the United States and International teams before their rounds. While inside the club house, Mia built relationships with the Quail Hollow staff and became a real member of their team. Each morning, she greeted the Quail Hollow members as they arrived for the event. Mia also worked closely with the serving staff who were all students in the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management program. Mia had the benefit of discussing with the students her experiences as a PGA WORKS fellow and how she came into this position The highlight of her Presidents Cup experience involved getting a full site tour by Quail Hollow’s Director of Golf, Tom DeLozier. She was able to see the ins and outs of one of the world’s most important golf tournaments!

Running for REACH

I've been fortunate to do some pretty cool things in my life, and running in the New York City Marathon ranks near the top Don't get me wrong, it's one of the hardest things I have ever done, but there is something really special about spending the day running through the five New York City boroughs with 50,000 new friends and over 2 million spectators lining the 26.2 mile course

"

It's a long day, as it took about 3 hours to get from my hotel to the starting line after riding a subway, a ferry, and a bus. It was also hot and humid, which is not normal November weather in New York of course While I felt good for most of the race, my legs cramped for the last 6 miles but...it was still amazing! I was able to knock almost 18 minutes off of my time from 2021, and even better, thanks to the kindness of generous people, I was able to raise almost $4,700 for PGA REACH"
