As the number of COVID cases declines and public health restrictions continue to ease, I hope you will take time to safely enjoy the warmer weather and good times with family and friends. Unit Computing Specialist Department: Office of Technology & Instructional Services Years of Service: 2 years at RBS Job Duties: My day-to-day activities include assisting faculty, staff and students with IT related issues.

I perform analytical, technical, and administrative work to plan, design, and install network and stand-alone computer systems for public use rooms, computer classrooms, offices, and conference rooms. I also provide hands-on training sessions and instructional classes in hardware and software applications for students, faculty, and staff.

What are the three words that best describe you: Funny, adventurous, reliable.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?

I would enjoy being a food critic/food writer I enjoy eating/cooking different cuisines Follow me on Yelp! I am a Yelp elite member!

This includes everything from classroom technical support to office/home-office technical support.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?

Working on blockbuster films. I love telling stories through the medium of short films, long films, silent films or even animated films. I’ll try to make a coherent story to entertain. Find some of my bad ones by typing my name into youtube.

What are the three words that best describe you: Creative, Artistic and Innovative. I’m always using the latest technology to get my artistic side out.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I have a youtube channel where I dress up as a bear and report about the week’s news with the help of what is bearly a news staff. We have fun though. Search Youtube for “Woke52” to check it out.

What you do you want others to know about you?

I keep up with the latest tech. Feel free to ask me about it.

If your life story was made into a book or a movie, what would the title be (and why)?

The title of a film based on my life story would be: Please Advise. Because it’d be a slice of life comedy about me giving everyone around me advice as they request it. It’d be great.

Did You Know?

Cicadas are Back

As you have probably seen, or more likely heard, the cicadas are back, after their 17 year hiatus. Cicadas are large stout insects with bulging eyes, short antennae and four, clear-membraned wings. Cicadas are beneficial in that they prune the weak branches on mature trees, aerate the soil and, after they die, become an important nitrogen source for growing trees.

Entomologist George Hamilton, from here at Rutgers University, recently told Newsweek that people should generally leave the insects alone and that, fortunately, the cicadas do little serious damage to most trees. They do not bite, and they do not sting. The cicadas’ lifespan is only four to six weeks, and they will start to die off in late June into July.

Cicadas are the loudest insects in the world. The male cicada sings to attract females by contracting the internal tymbal muscles. This causes the membranes to buckle inward, producing a distinct sound.

When these muscles relax, the tymbals pop back to their original position. Male cicadas in the same brood will stick together when calling in order to increase the total volume of noise. One theory for why the songs are so loud is that the songs may also deter predators.

As trees go through their seasonal cycles, shedding and growing leaves, the composition of their sap changes. And when cicada nymphs feed on that sap, they likely pick up clues about the passage of time.

It is fascinating that the 17th iteration of the trees’ seasonal cycle gives the nymphs their final cue that it’s time to emerge. Imagine that! Think back to where you were and what you were doing 17 years ago and look ahead to where you see yourself 17 years into the future, when the cicadas return. Amazing!

Cicadas are edible, full of protein, gluten-free, low-fat, low-carb and a trendy, crunchy snack for some people and animals, but please be careful. The FDA warns, “Don’t eat cicadas if you’re allergic to seafood, as these edible insects share a family relation to shrimp and lobsters. ”Some chocolatiers have even introduced a new line of chocolate-covered cicadas. If you are an adventurous eater, with no seafood allergies, and try one of these unusual treats, please take a photo and share your experience with us in the next issue of Inside RBS. We’d love to see and hear about it (and you/we won’t have another opportunity for 17 years).

RU Launches Family Support Line Rutgers Health has launched a new confidential staff, faculty, and family support line: Rutgers4U (1-855652-6819). The support line is available Monday through Friday from 8AM - 4PM, with anticipation to extend hours until 8PM. The lines are staffed by licensed clinicians who will conduct an initial assessment and will provide a brief clinical intervention for each inquiry. HR News Miriam Alvarez Retires I began my career at RBS in 1996 in the MSIS department as the department secretary and worked there for a couple of years. I must thank Dottie Torres who helped me a lot when I first joined RBS. There were a few others who welcomed me and assisted me who are no longer with RBS. I then moved to the CIMIC Research Center in 1998 and worked there for about 3 years. That research center is currently under the leadership of Professor Vijay Atluri. I learned a lot there and then was recommended for a position in the Office of MBA Student Services, and after consideration, I moved to the Office of MBA student services as the Administrator, handling all scheduling matters for RBS graduate and undergraduate Newark and NB programs. I began working for the MBA Student Services Office in 2001 and have been in the same office for the last 20 years. During the 20 years with MBA Student Services, I also learned a lot and was promoted to Assistant Director and then Assistant Dean. I have served in the Assistant Dean role for the last 10 years. During my time in MBA Student Services, I enjoyed my work with the students. I met a lot of wonderful and amazing students. I saw them come in with talents, skills and experiences, learn, thrive and become more confident. They were transformed as they went through the program.

I will miss the excitement of graduation and watching their families cheer them on. Thanks to all the faculty and staff who assist students during their time at RBS in all programs. Thanks to Dean Lei and the rest of the wonderful administration at RBS, like Yaw Mensah, Can Uslay, Melissa Rivera, Dana Harris, Corinne Schiavo, Nicole McCray, Ken Retino, Jennifer Diaz, Luke Greeley, Jenny Roberts, Deidre White and Shari Rynar for all their help and support throughout the years. I want to thank the Marketing and Communications Department, Dan Stoll, Steven Stone, Kendra Clarke, Joshua Charles, Jessica Harrigan and Prof. Ronald Richter for working together with Helen Pensavalle and me to ensure the NB undergraduate students and all graduate students, Newark and New Brunswick had a great virtual graduation experience for the last two years. A special thank you to Helen Pensavalle for being great to work with and for providing information during a very difficult time. It would not have been a success without their assistance. I would also like to thank the RBS OTIS Team for all their support throughout the years, especially Sophia D’Rozario, Jay Badiani, Irving Roman, Shevon Jackson, and Joe Bassano, especially during the pandemic.

I want to thank Rosa Oppenheim for her consistent delivery of the Calculus and Statistics Modules/Workshops to our MBA students each year, even during the pandemic year. I would also like to thank Prof. Farrokh Langdana for delivering many lectures during our FT MBA orientations, and Kenneth Freeman for his delivery of Excel workshops to our FT MBA’s during the pandemic. It really takes a lot of people working together towards the same goal to make our programs successful.

I also want to thank the Specialty Master’s Program directors and administrative coordinators for all their collaboration and support throughout the years to ensure students had a great experience as well as their support during certification periods and graduation every year. I will miss working with Kathleen Harmon, Devon Powell, Goncalo Filipe, Monnique Desilva, Jane Foss, Cheryl Daniels, Katriana Rivera, Gal Atia, Brody Sheldon, Thomas Hill, Marcie Kachur Werner, Angie Rodriguez, Trudy Morris-Hewitt. It’s been great working with all of them.

I have enjoyed my time at RBS. I met and worked with a lot of wonderful colleagues and will miss them all!! I want to wish all RBS Staff and Faculty continued success, much happiness and good health. Continue to do your best, collaborate and assist each other. They are all amazing!! Though I am looking forward to this next chapter in my life, I know that I will miss working with the entire great RBS Team!!!

Finance-Pro Restricted Travel and Exception Approval Process On May 12, 2021, the University shared the new travel and exception processes required for all domestic and international travel for University purposes. The restriction includes domestic travel for University purposes outside of the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and Connecticut region. To assist you with the forms and the approval process, a PowerPoint, including RBS approver information and required document links can be found under RBS Favorites Group on MS Teams. All domestic and international travel for University purposes is generally prohibited until further notice, except when explicit preapproval is obtained via the waiver process shared here. Travel for personal reasons and reimbursed personally is not regulated by this guideline.

Any travel that is not approved or not booked with a Rutgers-approved travel agency will not be considered Rutgers-sponsored business and will not be reimbursed.

Facilities COVID Weekly Testing Guidelines Update Based on recent University guidelines, weekly COVID testing is no longer required, if you are fully vaccinated against the virus. Proof of vaccination must be uploaded to the University COVID-19 Vaccination Portal page to be exempt from weekly testing. RU Occupational Health will review these records to ensure that individuals remain compliant with University guidelines.

If you are fully vaccinated and have updated your records online, please let the Facilities Team know so that they can collect any unclaimed COVID-19 test kits to return to the University COVID-19 Task Force and remove you from the testing protocol.

If you are not fully vaccinated yet or choose not to get the COVID-19 vaccination, but plan to be on campus on a regular basis, you still must submit weekly COVID-19 tests.

Event and Activity Certification System In an email from Tony Calcado, all events, planned activities, conferences, and non-credit academic programs hosted on University property organized for ten (10) or more people through August 31st require certification through the University Event and Activity Certification System (EACS). This process applies to on-campus events held during the Summer and Fall semester. Standard room reservation procedures will follow after an event has been confirmed through the EACS system. If you have any additional questions or concerns about this new process, please contact RBS Facilities at RBS-Facilities@business.rutgers.edu.

Signs of Life Returning to RBS

by Nancy Kiley, Acting Program Coordinator, Dean’s Office - Facilities Having been one of only a few RBS staff members at 100 Rock two days a week throughout telecommuting, it warms my heart to start to see promising signs of life returning to the Livingston campus. A summer course is being taught in-person in the large David M. Cohen Lecture Hall, PhD students are meeting with faculty once in a while, graduates posed for celebratory photos with family and friends in and around RBS, more staff members are working onsite a few days a week, and there is occasionally even a little bit of noise in the hallways. Footsteps squeaking on the polished floors never sounded so good, and the elevator “ding” excites me almost as much as the ice cream trucks of my childhood. Oh, how I can’t wait for normal, daily operations to return to Rutgers Business School, the Rutgers community at large, and to our own personal lives. It has certainly been a challenging year-and- a-half that none of us ever wants to repeat.

The Graduating Class of 2021 Due to the deadly, coronavirus pandemic, RBS Commencement 2021 was, like last year’s, a virtual event.

Admittedly, a virtual graduation may not have the same vigor and excitement of an in-person graduation ceremony at the RAC, but numerous RBS staff members went above and beyond their typical roles and responsibilities to ensure that both the students and their outstanding achievements were joyously celebrated throughout the month of May. This involved many long hours proofing graduate profiles, obtaining appropriate graduate gifts from vendors, arranging photo opportunities inside RBS-NB, distributing hard-earned specialty cords to graduates, creating the wonderful presentation, and coordinating the technology with internal and external IT service providers, and shipping thousands of gift boxes to RBS graduates around the globe.

Thank you to all the RBS faculty and staff who helped make RBS Commencement 2021 a memorable occasion for the graduates and their families. Your Resilience, Resourcefulness, Responsibility and Reinvention do not go unnoticed.

RBS Staff Newsletter Staff Shared Recipes Easy Cheesy Biscuits Shared by Dalia Risheg, Research Coordinator, Office of Career Management Ingredients: BISCUITS: • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 6 tablespoons cold butter, cubed • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese • 1 cup milk

TOPPING: • 3 tablespoons butter • ½ teaspoon garlic powder • ½ teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions 1.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. 2.

(Biscuits) In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt. Whisk or stir to combine so that everything is evenly distributed.

3.

Add the cubed cold butter. Using a pastry blender, a fork, or two butter knives, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

4.

Stir in the cheese.

5.

Add milk; stir just until everything is combined and there is no dry flour. The dough will be somewhat wet and sticky. Don’t over mix the dough, as this can cause the biscuits to be dense and tough.

6.

Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a sheet pan. (You will get 12 biscuits.)

7.

Bake for 16 to 18 minutes or just until the biscuits are lightly golden. They should not be browned. Be careful not to overcook them, as this will cause the biscuits to be dense and hard.

8.

(Topping) While the biscuits are baking, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat.

Add the garlic powder and parsley; stir to combine.

9.

As soon as the biscuits come out of the oven, brush with the topping.

Best served warm!

Note: Leftover biscuits can be frozen. Place in freezer bags (they should last a couple of months.)

You can reheat them in the microwave (30 seconds or so right from frozen) or in the oven (wrap in foil and bake until heated through, 15 to 20 minutes at 325°F.)

Pride Month Pride Month is celebrated every year in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots which occured in New York City in June of 1969. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Juneteeth Juneteenth is short for June Nineteenth, an important moment in US history. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation, Union General Gordon Granger and his troops rode to Galveston, Texas, and enforced the end of slavery. General Order 3 stated that “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights to property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”

Today, Juneteenth is an African American celebration in honor and remembrance of the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas in 1865 when slavery had been legally abolished and is also known as Freedom Day. On June 17, 2021 the day was official recognized as a federal holiday when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
